Only come here for breakfast (4square is a really good deal) and the pie. Lunch and dinner taste bad and there aren't many options

The only thing that could be better about Bakers Square is the restaurant portion of the whole place. It's ALL ABOUT the pie. All of their pies are incredible. They won't let you down. I won't even give you my personal favorites because I don't want to sway you from the fruit pies which are all freaking WONDERFUL I just personally prefer pies full of sugary nuts and oreos and chocolate and cream (not all in one). Anything you try, you're going to like it. They're reasonably priced as well. If Baker's Square happened to expand their menu I think that they'd be able to improve their business, which I'd really like to see. read more

I have never written a review for this franchise restaurant, as I try not to review a "franchise" restaurant because these are usually not worth reviewing. The reason I am reviewing this restaurant is because I have always had a wonderful server who is hospitable and such a sweet human being. His name is Angelo. Angelo has been working here for many, many years. He always has a smile on his face no matter what kind of day he has had. I am a huge fan of their salads. I enjoy their strawberry salad topped with warm chicken breast. They tend to change up the salads according to the Seasons, so I appreciate that they try "new" salads reflective of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. If you enjoy eating salads, soups, sandwiches, and any kind of pie imaginable, give this restaurant a try. My favorite soup is butternut squash. Everyday they have a different "soup" of the day. Ask if Angelo is working and request to be seated in his section (area). I will give the service here (since I always get Angelo and always request him) five stars. He is excellent, attentive, welcoming and really good at his job. He always makes sure that you, the customer, are very well taken care of and if you need anything at all, he'll take good care of you. Please keep in mind that this is a franchise restaurant. Expectations should not be set high. Another excellent Server is Jeannie. She is always on top of her game, and will take really good care of you. She is filled with positive energy. They remodeled this restaurant several years ago. It looks more like a huge dining area with fewer booths. The booths always fill up quickly. Their salmon is always cooked perfectly and it is not a huge piece. It comes with steamed vegetables and your choice of salad and/or soup. The salmon is flavorful and juicy. I like that the texture on the outside is crispy, but the inside is tender and soft. There are different Managers here, so management is hit or miss at this Baker's Square. This restaurant is not culturally diverse as other restaurant that are in the inner city or in the heart of the city. However, the service is fairly decent, the price-point is very good, and the selection of pies are too many to list here. Every Wednesday is FREE pie Wednesday, so if you feel like breaking up your week and getting a FREE slice of pie, go for it. It can get fairly loud on Wednesday evenings, so expect it to be crowded and busy. My favorite pies are coconut cream, French apple cream cheese, strawberry and banana cream pie. If I get a slice of pie here, I usually work it off at the gym by adding 30-extra minutes to my work-out routine. read more

This is the best Bakers Square I have been to. This one is newly remodeled. Before they remodeled it it seemed smaller on the inside but now it looks huge. Friendly staff and great food. read more

I used to go to this location for every holiday for pies, NEVER AGAIN! I placed an order for Easter the day before. The girl that answered the phone was very unprofessional and sounded as if she was high. She answered the phone as if it were her cell phone and not a business number. I had to ask her if it was Bakers Square on Harlem & Foster, because she simply said hello... Then I place my order with her. I placed my order and pickup for 10am. She says ok got it and was saying bye. She didn't even tell me a total, and when I asked for it she said to hold on I didn't even input it. She took a while and I'm pretty sure I heard her giggling in the background. She finally got back on and gave me a total. Easter day I have my bf go pick up the order at about 10:30am, because I figured they would be busy so to get there early. He gets there and they say they have no order for me. I told him to double check and speak with the manager. He did and the manager says they can't do anything for us now. Are you kidding me?? I placed my order in advance, I didn't wait to just show up and see! I told him he better figure it out because they were specially ordered for certain people. I had to confirm everything I did with the manager. He asked for when I exactly called and if I even called the right location. When I was reading back the number I called and explained that I even checked with the girl on the phone the location, the manager was still hesitant. He was still hesitant to give us the order! It took about an hour of this BS until he finally gave us our order. Not even a discount for time and frustration, not even an apology! Needless to say, this location needs serious improvement with employees and management!! I will never return to this location, I would rather drive a half hour out of my way to another one! read more

After remodeling and getting two new managers and getting rid of the old two this place really turned around. A new menu and everything. Of course the old favorites are there along with new ones. I recommend getting the Fried Cheeses appetizer, and for an entre I get the Grown Up Grilled Cheese which has shredded mozerella cheese, american cheese, and bacon on parmanini bread. One of my favorite waiters at this Bakers Square is Adam definately ask for him if he's there. read more

Second time in a year. Poor service. Waiting to be seated. No one acknowledge us. 7 minutes had gone by. Three people at counter, one customer paying. No reason for this. Finally, was asked how many. We replied. Person then didn't have any clue where to seat us. He asked another person behind the counter where should I seat them. He had no clue either. More time wasting. They spoke to each other some more with the deer in headlights look. We decided to go to another restaurant. We will not be eating there ever again. I feel like even 2 stars is being overly generous... we came in around 10:40 am and was lead to a booth that still had food on the seat. Disgusting i know. And how did our host fix the problem? He wiped it onto the already food filled floor so that you are literally sitting in left over food.... still i love bakers square so i tried to tough it out. I went to sit on the other side and see behind me i can't lean back because it has jelly on it. Can't scoot in because more food on the seats. Still decided to stay 10:55 someone finally comes to offer us water and then rushes off.. did i mention as i look around it's complete filth? White walls stained with food and dirt. Floor filled in dirt and crumbs and other garbage. I feel like i would feel better eating in an alley next to a dumpster. I've been staring at the food in the booth next to mine that's been sitting there since before we walked in, so at least a good 20 minutes, and lots of workers have passed it, no one has cleaned it up. Also it was absolutely freezing in the whole restaurant. Not sure how anyone can eat comfortablely in filth and I'm sub zero. Food was mediocre at best, though i do hope it's not nearly as dirty in the kitchen. Definitely won't be back would have had better luck with Taco Bell breakfast. read more

I love this Baker's Square and it scores high on my list as favorite places to go. The staff is so educated, friendly and well mannered. I've gotten to know so many of them from going there for years that some are like family! Food is always best quality. I'm always on a diet, so many choices here if I don't choose any pie. Free pie Wednesdays for the win! Not gourmet food, but decent for a great price. I love the rise and shine breakfast plate that they serve all day. It comes with eggs, hash browns, and choice of fruit or toast/english muffin. It's the perfect amount to not fill you up too much for that slice of pie. You also can't beat that the plate is under $6! I've tried many of their pies but my favorites are the cream cheese apple and the caramel pecan silk. Yum! read more

I can only hope that with Baker's Sqaure's recent financial problems that this one will remain the same. Unfortunately, my favorites have been taken off the menu or changed (especially the veggie sandwich!), but the service here has always been exceptional and the food is always good. read more

Was disappointed today with my dining experience at Baker's Square. My honey mustard salad was not good. Some of the lettuce was wilted beyond its time. The chicken was a very small portion and was a frozen breaded patty. The only thing that was good was the corn bread side. I will pass on the salads and stick to the pie... Oh my gosh! I have been coming to this particular Bakers Square for a long time usually good reliable food and service ok. Went there tonight for dinner and the service was absolutely terrible. Had to ask server 3 times for cream for the coffee after waiting a very long time for the drinks to come. Server had quite a bad attitude to boot. Wouldn't even give one star. I've slammed them now on FB, Insta, here, and the inspectors. Looking straight from the entrance is an aisle/seating section (used for overflow, I think) leading to the washrooms. My mom was checking us out. Before I even got to that aisle, I could smell HEAVY stench of mildew, feces, & a stench SO awful, I had to drive home with the windows open and LEAVE MY CLOTHING outside ALL NIGHT because we couldn't get the smell out of our sinuses. Had I not urinated, I would be very uncomfortable going home, and I had to go to Osco for an Rx in the same shopping plaza. (Their restroom is a separate complaint.) When I walked out of the Bakers Square washroom, a worker was still in the middle of using room air freshener spray down that aisle. My mom was served crepes which had been microwaved & not served timely. (The server's excuse as to why the crepes were cold with CREAM CHEESE inside of them was that they make the crepes at 6:00am. When I asked if they had oatmeal, she said that the oatmeal was made at 6:30am & she didn't want me to order it and then COMPLAIN that it was dry, etc. At what temp they were they being stored all day is anyone's guess.) Given all of that, I had to report the location to both the City and County Health Departments in the Chicago area. Additionally, our Buy One Entrée, get one free was NOT honored because my order of a whole Belgian Waffle but having to substitute the 2 eggs with a little dish of yogurt with granola on top was considered "al a carte" with a cup of coffee. So the checkout offered us $2.04 off the bill for a "seniors discount." I have audio and video evidence of all we endured at the dinner last night, so Bakers Square has absolutely no recourse. First time I have ever been to bakers square. I was pleased with the service and food. I went on free pie wednesday which is a plus in my book. I was somewhat surprised that free pie Wednesday really meant free pie Wednesday. I somewhat expected only a few options for free pies. Everything is fairly priced which is a must in this day in age. She threw in a couple of candles with the pie that I bought for my boyfriend's birthday. I know this is not customary but she ran right to the back to see what she could do. Terrible terrible terrible terrible. We ordered carryout. Got home and we were terribly disappointed. My boyfriend got a Mac and cheese, but it literally was a side order of Mac and cheese. I got the grilled cheese and fries....not that great either. Very disappointed with this place. I never really like bakers square. Today I decided to try it again, but this really topped it. Also seems like the staff isn't well trained. Likely due to poor management. Kinda shocked they are still in business here. read more

I came here 5 minutes before the placed closed one evening just to purchase a pie to GO. The cashier refused to sell me a pie and sent me away saying they were closed. The restaurant was busy and people were still paying and leaving. There was no reason not to accommodate my purchase. I am very disappointed and never coming again. Very poorly run store. read more

When I came to review this restaurant, I was astounded to see such great reviews. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience. If I could have given zero stars, I would have. I've always had a good experience in the past at Bakers Squares, not this one. When we arrived on a busy weekday evening, it took more than a minute before anyone acknowledged that we were waiting to be served. Not completely out of the ordinary, but a minor annoyance. Perhaps they were understaffed, because we then had 2 different waitresses try to serve us. And then we waited... and waited... for our food. 15 minutes or so later our waitress came to apologize for the wait, which I appreciated, but then it was still another 10 minutes before our food came. And when it did, it was clear it had been sitting around for at least 10 minutes! I am not a picky person, but the food was completely cold and inedible. My grilled cheese was soggy and the cheese was barely melted and cold, and my SO's turkey was cold. It was obvious the food had been cooked and then sat there waiting for the waitress to pick up the order for several minutes. We complained to the manager (because our waitress was nowhere to be found), who whisked the food away without even speaking to us! It was bizarre. He only came back a minute later when he was seating another couple, and then meekly said they would start our food over again--inappropriately saying this in front of the guests who he was seating, who probably wondered what was going on, and with no apology to us whatsoever. At that point we told him not to bother and left. I will never return to such an ill-managed restaurant. What a disappointment. read more

No matter how much they remodeled and tried to fix the place up, the service is still sub-par. Last time I went, I ordered the chicken pasta. I thought that would be easy and hard to screw up. I am sure you have guessed by now that I was wrong. They brought my girl's dinner and told me that mine would take a little longer. OK, that is kinda weird but whatever. After 30 minutes, the waitress comes over and says "we are all out of the noodles for the chicken pasta." I couldn't help it and I gave her a look like "it took half an hour to figure out you didn't have them?!" and she said they could use a thicker noodle instead. I was hungry and I couldn't leave since we had already been served half our order, so I said fine and waited even longer for them to cook the new dish. Luckily the thicker noodles were probably better than whatever they were out of. The manager did come over, apologized, and gave me a free piece of pie for my trouble though. If you have trouble gumming down food, then this place is for you and your dentures. Everything seems to be made into a fine paste and BLAND. Where else can you eat while an elderly nun glances over at you like the pie you are downing is a sin, which it probably is. I can't help it I like bakers square because I have so many great memories of going there with my friends when I was growing up. We didn't have a lot of money so it was a great choice. Yeah its getting a little run down but I still love the pies, they are still the best. The service here can be hit or miss depending on your waitress. There specials are good and I love the fried chicken the best. Will continue to come and look forward to my next chocolate creme pie with coffee. They do a great breakfast too. read more

I have been going to this Baker's Square for over 20 years. It used to be my favorite spot for breakfast, but it had really gone down hill over the years. I had such high hopes for this place after their most recent remodeling. I was so happy to see that they were finally turning around. Well, the hubby and I went there the other morning for breakfast, and sad to say...this place has NOT changed! Aside from fixing up the outside, all they did was slapped a coat of paint over the same old nasty ceiling and called it good. The cleaning practices are worse than ever. The window sill right next to the booths was covered with a thick layer of dust. It looked like they hadn't cleaned it in weeks. The window had greasy finger prints smeared all over it. Worse, was our waiter whose shirt was FILTHY! It looked like he had been in a food fight it was so dirty. Finally, and this was the last straw...I could see into the kitchen from my seat and not one, but two of the servers were putting their dirty thumbs on the pieces of pie that they were serving to customers. They would slide the spatula under the slice of pie, then use their dirty thumb to push the piece of pie onto the plate. NASTY!!! This place is a dump and a health hazard. read more

My husband and I stopped in for a quick bite to eat. He ordered the breakfast special and I ordered a BLT no mayo. We noticed there was only a cashier/ hostess and two waitresses. Later on we saw a busboy. The restaurant was quite crowded, especially for a Sunday night. Our food took quite a long time to arrive at our table. I picked up the toast to make sure the mayo had been omitted, and much to my dismay what was suppose to be " 6 pieces of bacon" was possibly two slices that were crumbled into very small pieces. Our waitress was attentive, but definitely overwhelmed. When she didn't come back to the table, my husband got up and spoke with her. She went in the kitchen and came out about 10 minutes later with a new sandwich. The second one was much better with full bacon slices. My side was a fruit cup.Unfortunately, about 40% of the grapes were soft or rotting, and the melon not the greatest. I had water and my hubby a Dr. Pepper. My husband's pancakes were golden brown on one side and completely white and under done on the other.Our bill was $23.00 without tip. Very disappointed with the quantity and quality of food. We definitely won't be going back. I think they are fortunate they are pretty much the only restaurant in this area, or they probably would have had to close their doors long ago. read more

I've never had this much trouble at a restaurant. I just went there to pick up 2 pies and it took 20 minutes. The black lady was nice but wasn't very good at multitasking. She basically had a meeting with another waitress about a mistake they made on a previous order. All she had to do is take a Dutch Apple of the shelf and give it to me. I already paid for it. I went to this bakers square on Saturday, November 7th, 2015. Firstly, let me start by saying that my daughter, mother and myself frequent bakers square every Saturday, however this is our first time going to this specific location, store # 658. So if your a minority or specifically African American I wouldn't go here unless you want to get horrible service. Our dining experience started by the assistant manager attempting to seat us in the back near the restrooms, in which we noticed that's where the other African American patrons were sitting, I asked the assistant manager, do you have any seats over there (pointing to the bigger dining area), he looked at me as if annoyed and replied "sure" dryly. We didn't say anything about it we just continued on with our lunch. So our server whom is white comes and takes our order, he repeated our order 3 times to us. After waiting what seemed like an hour, we noticed our white server was asking all his other tables if they needed anything, bringing them their food, and being courteous as a waiter should. However, the server never came back to our table at all after taking our order. I saw the assistant manager walking pass and I asked him, do you know how much longer our food will be? He went to check and immediately brought it out to us, which further tells me the meal was ready, the server just didn't bring it to our table. My mother meal wasn't correct and we had no napkins during our entire meal. At this point I'm fed up, I spoke with the assistant manager and told him I think their is some racism going on here, in which I don't tolerate. I told the assistant manager that my mothers order was wrong and told him I wanted the check, store number, and to speak with the general manager. The assistant manager brought back everything I requested. Now, we're speaking with the general manager, I disclose to her all the above information and she's nice yet tries to make it seem like racism wasn't the case and more so tried to blame the server as just being "bad" and not understanding the job. The general manager nearly begged us to pay for our meal however I politely declined and explained to her, I don't need a free meal, I insist that I pay for our meal and this is about the way in which we were treated and the poor service. I stated sternly once more that I don't want or need her to take care of our bills, she insisted we take a free pie, I accepted the pie to suffice her however I paid our dining bill for our meal. I told her that I would be calling corporate to complain, and informed her that we will not be back to this location again. She asked us to try that location again, I gracefully declined. Went to enjoy a Sunday breakfast with friends and ended up leaving hungry and disappointed! It took them over 35 minutes to bring us our breakfast and once it arrived, it was cold. Waitress told us she got it "as soon as she could". Not sure what they really meant by this? Was she too busy to pick up and bring to our table or just forgot? We ended up sending it back and promised by waitress to return replacement promptly and hot. While waiting, manager, asked if we needed anything else while we waited and asked for a fresh pot of coffee. Another "30 minutes" and no food or coffee in sight. Spoke to an Asst. Manager, who was very defensive with us, asking us"what did he want us to do" that they were doing everything they could. We wasted over 1 hr. 20 minutes with no food and horrendous service. I ended going up to the front and inform their Manager we were done waiting and to not bother with food. We left and most definitely, will NOT return! I would steer clear of this place - poor management, horrible waitstaff & bad service all around! read more
