If there's one…read morebit of practical hiking advice I can offer, it's to camp here for at least two days before hitting the trail if you live at a low elevation. I was not acclimated and it made my hike unexpectedly grueling. It's an absolutely beautiful hike, and I wish I was less focused on simply breathing! The entirety of the campground is surprisingly fancy as campgrounds go. Lots of manicured public spaces. But the store always seemed closed which probably had something to do with the government shutdown happening at the time. Directional signage within the campground (to specific site numbers and to the trailhead) is pretty awful and I wasted a decent amount of time trying to find my site. I got up pretty early to hit the trail (just as the sun rose), and had to use AllTrails to point me to the trailhead. In early Oct, it can get pretty cold up there so setting up camp at 4:30pm wasn't ideal. Try to get there earlier bc it cools down really fast. My specific site (26) was really private and very nice. It looked just like the pictures on Recreation dot gov. It sits beside a bubbling little stream, yet mosquitoes were never an issue. It was also the most level and tidiest tent pad I've ever had the pleasure of sleeping on. There was a major drop-off between the car pull-in and the campsite, so I had to be extra vigilant about not breaking my neck during the frequent back and forth loading and unloading.

It'll always be a gamble, so if you're planning to camp for the weekend, come EARLY to try and net a site. I stayed in site #2, which is stupidly large in comparison to the other sites. There are spots for 2 cars, and we even had our own private trail leading to a babbling river. There is potable water, clean bathrooms, and even a few deer sightings! For $23 a night, we were living large. If you forgot anything, there is a market by Glacier Lodge a mile up the road selling the essentials (and apparently, BBQ on Saturdays). However, it was our camp hosts, David and Takota, who really made the stay special. David gave us a personal tour of the grounds, and we got to see his "Twisted Forest," his crystal collection, and he pointed us towards some natural hot springs! We even got his mixtape...aka CDs of the local radio show he hosts...that proved to be awesome to listen to on the drive down. Takota is David's very cute giant dog pal. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back in the Fall season to witness the color change!

It was the perfect distance for a nice day hike, at about 10 miles. Nice reward of picturesque lakes at the end, and you turn around head back. I went down to touch the water, but some people went swimming in the ice cold water! This was a very popular trail and seemed like everyone brought their dogs. Out of maybe 20 parties with dogs, 1 actually had it on a leash. I would recommend starting this hike early so you can grab a parking spot at the trailhead and avoid the heat.

I definitely recommend the spot if you're trying to do a weekend getaway!

It got quite hot in the late mornings, early afternoons but that was expected. The large boulder and tree at our site helped with shade but still pretty exposed. There's a pretty active stream running through the campground, you can walk down to it. We used the fire pit the first night and we had a blast with our little daughter, looking up at the stars both nights. The toilets were close to our site and were pretty well maintained, no showers. We hopped around the Alabama hills at sunset and took a drive up to the Mt. Whitney portal (which was about 10 degrees cooler during the day) to walk around. We would love to come back here to camp!

STEPH JUDGEMENT: A natural wonder worth visiting…read more In all the years I've driven up and down the 395 on the way to and from Mammoth I never made that turn at Big Pine to visit this ancient wonder, as it's not just a short detour. This last time the hubby and I went to Mammoth, though, i was determined to visit this place, so we drove out the 25 miles to the visitor center (closed), gaining quite a bit of altitude along the way. The said altitude prevented us from doing the fairly easy hikes near the visitor center, as we hadn't been up this way in a while and weren't feeling acclimated enough. We got to take in plenty of fantastic scenery, though, at various lookout points and especially on the drive out to Patriarch Grove, where we got to see the environment change drastically from scrubby green hills to desolate sandy soil with the signature gnarly bristle cone pine trees. It was worth the bumpy unpaved road and finding out that the last mile was snowed out. Would definitely love to come back and do those hikes!

We parked in front of the Visitor Center and went on the Discovery Trail. It took us an hour to complete. We started on the right side of the loop, and I was just gasping for air. We saw the beautiful Bristlecone trees on the trail. As we continued on to the left side of the loop, we had to walk on the big red rocks. That part was not enjoyable at all as we had to be careful not to trip. However, the views were so wonderful. It's a clear trail, so there is no getting lost.

An attendant watching the pool for safety. Lounge chairs in the sun, chairs and lots of opportunities for shade. Went to plug in my Nema 1450 Shore power cord and the pedal outlet was melted. Let the check in lady girl know and quickly two maintenance guys came out for a look see. I told them exactly what needed to be replaced and the part name. The younger one said he will call an electrician to come take a look. I said, tell him to bring a Nema 1450 outlet and replace it, as it's nothing to look at but just replace it already. Now mind you we are already set up and can't plug in safely. They "called the owner" and said the electrician can come tomorrow and that's just not gonna work for me. I asked where is the closest hardware store and again the younger one said "it's probably closed" he's not helpful and he's a minimum effort kinda guy. I called ace hardware and they are open for another 1-2 hrs. Had the counter make sure the part is in and had it ready for pick up. The older one tried to put it in, not having any experience with this type of electrical work. I ended doing it for him as I'm a 30+ year electrician. I may have saved his life - . The office offered a $20 credit. and got them to do $50...... The End

We were there in July and could see a waterfall in the distance, I am assuming the one feeding the creek. The staff there were extremely friendly and helpful. Helpful tip we were in space 7 close to the bathrooms and we talked to someone that knew the park and said they must have put a WIFI extender on the bathroom cause the park used to not have great internet coverage before. Just advice if you need internet, but it is the type of place that would be great to just disconnect also. Would definitely stay here again and hope to in the not to distant future.

Helpful, friendly not overpowering and aggressive like the current camp host. They do not need my business...I do need this camp ground! There are plenty others, and less expensive if you dry camp. The host is a very rude person and I will never come back EVER!!!!! We have been coming here for 10 years and some years we visited 2 to 3 times during the year. So disappointing to see how much it's gone down. We loved our camp host Pam who helped us out so much she went out of her way to keep the campgrounds clean and safe and bathrooms were clean, christen who worked there also helped out a lot she helped Pam run the campground!!!! Last year Carla who was there running the campground at the time helped us booked a spot for this year . Now there's a Karen(Robin) person who just wouldn't work with us and she's very rude and has no consideration for her camper's
