Minus 1 star because I had to make two trips (the first trip BAKE was out of cupcakes!). This is a cute bakery, no doubt about it. Extremely neigborhood-y, kids are on the floor coloring and lovebirds are in the corner sipping coffee. It's got a lighthearted atmosphere, kind of like the neighborhood itself. My issue was that the cupcakes are kept refrigerated. They would taste so much better if they were at room temp! Perhaps that's why other reviewers are gushing about other desserts besides the cupcakes (whoopie pies, brownies, etc). Maybe I picked the wrong item? But how can I go wrong with cupcakes!?!?! Let me end on another positive....there is plenty of parking outside of Bake and on neighboring streets, so it's not like one of those bakeries (I'm talking about you Molly's) that you need valet. Walked by this AM and stopped in for a cup of coffee. Of course I had to try something else as well, so I got a pecan square. The pecan square was Delicious (and only $0.75). The coffee was fine. Its a nice clean little shop with good lighting. The rest of the desserts looked very good. I will definitely be back when I have a sweet tooth. They were a little short on non-sweet things though which will limit my coming back on a regular basis. The neighborhood will definitely benefit from having them there though. read more

I'm so glad that I live in Texas or I'd be throwing down benjamins everyday at Bake even if I tried to resist. This is the real stuff - like better than grandma's baked goods. I had to try it after passing by a stand they set up in the farmer's market in Goldcoast area. They have everything you can imagine - my favorite is their lemon bread, banana bread, and zucchini bread. And yes, I may have tried them all at once if you were wondering. For years Bake has been providing our family with THE best cakes. For some reason, we just never ordered the straight up Chocolate Cake before. Well, it was my birthday a few weeks ago and that's what we did. I had an adult only party and you should have seen the crowd go wild over this cake! Just like the kiddos, but funnier because a bunch of adults on sugar high is hilarious. One friend just kept grunting about how amazing it was and devoured two big pieces. Stopped in on their 3rd day of business and saw the amazing looking yesterdays baking cupcakes for just $1 each. Knowing I had an office full of people that would love them I bought all 6. They threw in a few free cookies for good measure and my credit card wouldn't read on their machine. I then taught them how to manually enter a Credit card on their machine and then went to my office. Once I arrived and the whole crowd cheered I took a bite into my Carrot cake cupcake to taste the BEST FUCKING CUPCAKE I HAVE EVER HAD! So moist and flavorful and not overpowered by the frosting. I take it back. The coffee isn't the rubbish that I remember. I mean, it was really really bad, but somehow, some way, at some point in time, it became good. Like, fuck you Starbucks, good. I've been ordering the red-eye lately and beyond the goodness mentioned above, it's made consistently each time. There may not be a better bakery in Chicagoland than Bake. Bake's cookies are great! The flavors and textures within each cookie work together perfectly. I will not say which ones are best(they're all great); I don't ever want to walk into Bake and leave cookieless because others beat me there and bought everything... I've been going to Bake from the day it opened and I have never been disappointed. I've tried out many different places and nothing compares to Bake. Everything is made fresh on a daily basis and not mass produced not like all the other places so you're guaranteed to have a fresh, delish treat all the time! I've ordered many treats (i.e., cakes, cupcakes cookies) from Bake and they all have been superb! Wherever I've taken their cakes (cupcakes or cookies) people are always saying, "OMG! these are by far the best I've ever had!" And their cream cheese frosting is to die for! This review is based solely on the apple pie. First time customer as I needed two apple pies for a Monday lunch meeting and all the other pie stores are closed on Monday. To bake an excellent apple pie, you have to know how to make a crust that is both flaky and buttery as well as structurally sound enough to hold and bake the filling without collapsing. So I came in here with high hopes, especially since I was hoping chicago would rep the cupcake fad better than LA... But unfortunately my first try back home over break was a fail. I had the chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing and it was a huge letdown. The frosting was absolutely nasty, like biting into a stick of butter. I was really grossed out and I (literally) slid it off in one whole chunk off my cupcake. Whoever made it needed a refresher in buttercream icing, because that was not it. The cupcake itself was so so, a little bit too moist for my tastes. I also had the buttery greasy taste in my mouth from the icing so that didn't really help. All in all, I will not be returning to this place. The cookies looked pretty good but there are plenty of good cookie places here (Swedish Bakery anyone??). The only reason I gave them two stars is because my friend was super happy with her latte and the people there were pretty nice. read more

LOVE!! I have a crazy sweet tooth and Bake has never let me down. From call ahead orders to walking in off the street, everything I've had is so delicious. They are so friendly and have great customer service, and were so flexible when I wanted to call in an order and pick it up 30 minutes later. I LOVE THIS PLACE!! We made a special trip to Bake 20 minutes before they closed because, the night before, in a drunken stupor, I managed to get a couple of bites of my neighbor's oreo-cookie sandwich before he ripped it out of my claw-like hands. I had no recollection of the cookie until he mentioned it the next day and then it all came flooding back to me! HOW DELICIOUS this treat is! Two large crisp chocolate cookies sitting a-top and a-bottom smooth, sweet white frosting! I had to get my paws on another so we went back the next night. The staff is incredibly friendly and warm, the vibe inside is inviting and charming. I also tried a whoopee pie, which was ginormous and satisfying and a raspberry and white chocolate muffin...moist, fluffy, lots of raspberries. They have plenty of other sweet treats to choose from too. I have been wanting to stop by Bake ever since it opened and today, I finally dragged myself to the shop. It always seemed like too long a walk from the Damen/Milwaukee/North Avenue Crotch. I was surprised at the limited selection. I ordered my customary vanilla cupcake and a cup of coffee. The cupcake, aesthetically, was nothing to write home about, but it tasted absolutely delicious! Everything seemed to have a very "homemade" touch to it. The Metropolis coffee also paired well with my delightful treat. It looks like they also have a light lunch menu. Neat little place. Several years ago, friends of mine found a new bakery that they couldn't stop raving about. That bakery was Bake. And since then, it's been my favorite bakery in the city, too. Everyone working there is so nice. We come in frequently enough now (a few times a month) that they know who we are, and the conversation always picks up right where we left off last time. Their scones (I like the chocolate chip and the maple glazed) are some of the best ever. Their croissants (especially the chocolate almond) are to die for. And the cupcakes and cakes are perfection. BEST COOKIES EVER. I am a cookie girl. I hate any kind of bready baked good, which is pretty every kind of baked good. Muffins. No Thanks. Cake. Ugh. Donuts. Get out. But the cookies here are the most delicious cookies ever. They are soft and gooey and peel apart as if they just came out of the oven. I have no idea how they do it, they are better than any cookie I've ever been given in my life. The chocolate chip pretzel cookie is a personal favorite of mine. Just go. Seriously. And it's super kid friendly, as I believe the owner has a four or five year old son that runs around the place and has shelves of toys and window decals on the sliding glass door. Wow. I had no idea there actually was a heaven on earth, but lo and behold--here it is! The first time I stopped in at Bake with my two year old son, I got a key lime bar mainly because it was so cheap. Holy lord! It was AMAZING! The filling was tangy and creamy and perfectly complimented by a graham cracker base. I actually thought about it for four days before we finally went back. On our second visit, I ordered a Whoopie Pie to share with my son, thinking it was probably going to be a let down. It just looked overly sweet and like something only little kids would enjoy. Man--my son BARELY got two bites of it! I could have eaten the whole thing (and almost did). As if the baked goods alone weren't enough to keep us coming back, they are also incredibly kid friendly! They have several baskets of toddler-appropriate toys, as well as books and a cool chalkboard table that the kids can scribble on. Plus the owner just seems really cool with kids being kids. My son had a blast just chilling on the floor, playing with a school bus he found in one of the baskets. For the first time in ages, I was actually able to finish a cup of coffee before he was ready to go. Bottom line: this place is now our go-to bakery until the end of time. One word...Delish! I ride past Bake everyday on my way to and from work. I have been wanting to venture inside since it has been opened, but an occasion has never arose. Well upon having a family gathering this weekend at my pad, I decided to order a cake since I had 3 family members who had birthdays that week. I ordered an old fashioned 8 layered chocolate cake. The presentation of the cake was absolutely beautiful. There were fresh strawberries and blackberries all over the top of the cake. On the sides there were tiny little balls that of a creme colored and light brown colored, they tasted of like rice crispy balls. Now moving on to the taste... Everyone was blown away on how fabulous this cake tasted. To be exact many of my family members said this was probably by far the best cake they ever tasted. This is a huge compliment since everyone in my family loves to cook and bake. The chocolate was rich and the crumb was very moist. The chosen fruit (strawberries and blackberries) complimented the flavors and brought out the perfect taste buds. The cost of the cake was extremely reasonable with what you are getting. I would definitely recommend Bake. I will definitely be back to order for any future special occasions. read more

Bake will be my downfall...I'm sure of it. Typically speaking, I'm not the type of girl who eats a lot of dessert. I don't keep my pantry filled with cookies or other baked goods and I rarely order dessert at restaurants. HOWEVER...I've also never lived within walking distance to a place like Bake before. The proximity of this place to me is both a blessing and a curse. I tend to do a Bake run now at least once a week (and try to make whatever I buy last for a few days). I haven't tried everything...but it's mainly because the things I have bought are so amazing that I can't resist buying them over and over again. The cranberry scone is AMAZING buttery goodness. The cupcakes: rich, moist, perfect in density and flavor. I'm usually the girl who scrapes off most of the frosting/icing on her cupcakes/cakes (usually tastes too processed to me)...but the frosting here- I indulge because it's sooo worth it. My favorites? The chocolate chip and pretzel cookie, their wickedly good peanut butter cookie (it had big chunks of Reeses in them, but they haven't sold them in awhile), scones, and ALL of their cupcakes (just tried the pumpkin one and it was scrumptious...and the red velvet is also delicious). I recently bought my son's first birthday cake here as well. It was beautiful and delicious as I expected (i ordered the old fashioned chocolate), but what surprised me was how many people came up to me at the party wanting to know where I had bought it. I heard over and over again from people how it was one of the best cakes they had ever tasted. The only complaint I have is that I could have bought a much smaller cake for the number of guests I had. The cake has so many layers and is so rich, that it can actually serve double the amount of people that the bakery quoted me. HOWEVER, even though we had more than half of the enormous cake left over...none of it went to waste. My husband and I ate every last morsel over the span of a week. ;) So far, Bake is the best bakery I've found in Chicago. Lucky (and cursed) me that I live so close to it. read more

I am not a huge sweets or chocolate person but for the past few months I have been craving a really good cupcake. I have tried many of the posh bakery and cupcake places from Wicker Park to Downtown to Lincoln Park to Lake View. They all fell flat. I was strolling in Wicker Park this past Saturday and almost passed Bake up because it was unassuming looking. When I realized that it made espresso, what I badly needed, I went in and saw this huge peanut butter whipped cream chocolate cupcake. I still had my craving, although I was not expecting much. I ordered a skim cappuccino and the cupcake. I was in heaven. The cupcake was not overly sweet. There was a good balance between the peanut butter and the chocolate flavors, and by golly, it was moist. The many other cupcake places that I have been to have either failed with balance of flavor or moistness. My skim cappuccino was good too. It was silky smooth and the froth was perfect. read more

The blueberry muffins are so amazing that I call in advance to have some put on hold so I can guarantee that they don't sell out before I get there. To me, there are places you judge for ambiance and then there are places you judge solely on the food. I don't understand the concept of needing a bakery to decorate the place like you are entering into a big fluffy cloud with gumdrops suspended from the ceiling like rain. I like their simple, clean store, with comfortable seating and easy to go options. If girthy girls started getting judged only on their personality, I'd probably say screw it and eat at Bake every day. It really is that good. read more

This is my second time ordering with bake and their cakes are amazing. Their chocolate cake is the best chocolate cake I've ever had. Their rainbow cake is very good too just large so keep that in mind when you order. We had 14 people and still had half the cake left. Love Bake. I live close but always forget about this really cute bakery. So I went in one day and got a half a dozen cookies for a "thank you" gift and two cupcakes for myself and kids. The cupcakes were very good. I wish there were more varieties. But the cream was light and the cake was tasty. I did not get to try the cookies but they looked fantastic. Gained weight just looking at them. Added plus was the really friendly service. They told us to come and stay and next time I will. One of my favorite bakeries in Chicago. For my first visit there few months back, I ordered two boxes full of goodies (practically everything they had besides the cupcakes). The breakfast-y pastries were delicious. Their cookies were awesome, esp. the oatmeal cherries/cranberries one. Banana chocolate chip cookie was a little too sweet. I also ordered soup because rainy days make me crave soup. The soup of the day was tomato vegetable. YUM! My normal problem with soup in restaurants is that a lot of times the vegetables in it get so flavorless and soggy. Their soup definitely had the flavor and their vegetables were NOT soggy. I also got bread with it and that bread was buttery, hard on the outside and oh-so-soft on the inside. It went perfectly with the tomato soup. Subsequent trips were just fulfilling. Highlights include the whoopie pie (not your typical whoopie, it's made with peanut butter cream in the middle), malt cupcake with nutella buttercream, vanilla cupcake with chocolate buttercream, and corn chowder with fresh cut corn. My all time favorite is definitely the malt cupcake with nutella buttercream. I dream about it sometimes. The positive, at the same time negative thing, about their ever changing cupcake selections is the fact that I don't know what they have that day unless I call ahead or sometimes they do update it on their FB page.
