So my boyfriend recently lost sixty pounds and all he had to do was give up carbs and soda. I feel the pressure to eat similarly when around him but when he's not around....HELLLOOOO WHITE BREAD! Enter Bagels, Etc. Boy-oh-boy, have I never been so excited to eat a boring old bagel before. It took me a few seconds to figure out where to order -- the store is quite narrow and the counter is actually towards the back of the restaurant. I decided to go with an everything bagel with a smidgen of cream cheese. The lady at the counter proudly announced that she bakes her own bagels from scratch, every day (a fact that she TOTALLY needs to market). My hip widening treat came out in less than three minutes and was piled high with cream cheese. The outside was warm and crunchy and the inside was squishy. Not a typical NY bagel but this is DC baby and I tore through that sucker like Reptar at the Ice Capades. Glad to know that other people also thought it was a bit on the small side too because by the time I finished I was surprised by how fast it went away. Satisfaction achieved. read more

Curt, automatic service and bare bones ambience fooled me back not thinking this place would be good. It's not. Mind you, it's mostly for take out, so they treat the bagel like a sandwich and then wrap it. That hides the fact that the obnoxiously impatient cashier ignored my request to toast a bagel which let the half that had tomato on it to be a soggy mess by the time I took bite 2. The tomato was an unripe pale orange affair, which I assume she personally shops for stores to make you think there's more than the world stingiest portion of lox on the bagel. And for a treat, it's self-service coffee, except they were out of regular and again the cashier, who mindlessly takes orders that already forgotten that I requested it with cream and filled it up to the brim from a pot, forcing me to spill a quarter of an ounce so I could put some half-and-half in. Maybe this explains why they're so stingy on the locks, because of all the wasted coffee. I will not be back oh, I almost forgot: it's cash only which Miss congeniality only tells you after she's rung up the order. I'd recommend going in ordering up what you want, and then saying oh I don't have any cash, and leaving. Definitely the best choice gastronomically. This place obviously left a bad taste in my mouth. My husband and I love Bagels Etc. My Dad special orders bagels from them (via us). I even brought a bag of them to Chicago for my colleagues (the city has great food but lacks good bagels). They are OPEN and using stringent covid-19 safety, distancing, and cleanliness practices so we have continued to get our weekend bagel fix. We call ahead and our order is bagged up and ready when we arrive. They freeze really well and toast up beautifully at home so we've been buying a dozen at a time to last us the week. The best bagel I've had in DC, rivaling need NYC bagels! Bagels etc. is a no-frills bagel joint with very fast service and reasonable prices. I got the bagel untoasted bc it looked fresh and soft...my first bite was perfectly doughy and carb-y with the perfect thin layer of crust on the outside. The whole wheat everything bagel was flavorful and extra salty, exactly how I like it. They had my order out before I finished paying. Now that is fast service! $5 for a bagel, cream cheese, and OJ. Granted I'm from southern CA so my bagel tastebuds may not be that refined, but I'm okay with that and out of all the places I've eaten so far in DC I'll probably miss this place the most. Ok, so I looked up places for breakfast and this place sounded great; based on reviews. It did NOT disappoint. This is a local joint worthy of an Anthony Bourdain episode. It's a whole in the wall that stays busy. We ate outside and people came and went swiftly because the service is freaky fast!! I had a bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel - DELISH!! They make they're own bagels. Needless to say it was warm, soft and all types of goodness. If you're ever in the area, definitely find your way here for a breakfast or lunch sandwich. Despite the others here, I found the bagels to be a little on the expensive side for the portions. Sort of a 'tweener between a mini bagel and a regular sized bagel. Overall it's not a bad quick-pick-up if you're in the area, line moves quick (not Speedy Gonzalez quick), and the food can be tasty (depending on what you order). However, make sure you get something tasty with ingredients like cheese or cream cheese in it. We ordered their "Special #1", which was a bagel with scrambled egg and a choice of meat (on cheese). It was quite un-special and seemed sort of a click-bait, but in real-life. However, I can't knock the company for being good at marketing. I can only knock myself for being a dumb ass (extra donkey kicks for me). However, the Steak, Egg, and Cheese (SEC) was decent. A good amount protein, and the cheese helped meld everything together in my mouth. I suppose bagels are extra filling, so I left eating one SEC 'tweener bagel and was content. Oh, and apparently cash is king with the Korean ajumma's behind the counter. Ask about credit cards and they'll skip right on by you or point you towards their ATM machine, conveniently located at the front of the place. read more

Classic hole in the wall gem. The line is always long but it moves quickly. Do not be dissuaded by the line. The quality of the bagels is incredible. My fiancé and I have tried nearly every bagel in DC and Nova and this is the best place by a considerable margin. Their savory bagels are considerably better than their sweet flavors, but you really can't go wrong here. MAKE SURE YOU BRING CASH. They do not take cards. read more

Stayed at the Washington Hilton for a conference and was sick and tired of the expensive nearby breakfast options - thank God for Bagels Etc.! Got a medium coffee and a honey wheat bagel with cream cheese for $5.50, not bad. I went at 8 AM, on a Saturday, and there was only one other person in line. It's exactly what it looks like on the outside: you go in, you order, you get your food, you get out. Service was efficient and the people were as polite as they needed to be. This is not the place for you if you expect employees to fawn over you or want to pay with your Apple Watch, but it IS the place for you if you're looking for a good quick breakfast bite in DC. read more

Generally pretty good DC bagels. Always a healthy dose of cream cheese and a soft bagel. There's been a line every time I've gone but it moves very quickly and they're very efficient. A few downsides: there's very little seating so you'll have people standing over you, waiting for a table while you're eating (if you choose to eat there) and it's cash only, which isn't atypical for a bagel place, but come prepared. I think these might be some of the best affordable bagels in DC, but Bethesda Bagels and CYMB may have them beat overall, outside of price. read more

The bagels are absolutely delicious here!! I'm a huge bagel fanatic and I lived in NY for four years so I know me a good bagel when I taste one. This definitely falls in my TOP 3 bagels I've ever had. First day I had a poppy seed bagel. Second day I had a great grain bagel. Both were good! A little skimpy on the cream cheese since I love mine with a lot of cream cheese but it was still good regardless. I also got the veggie cream cheese on one but there wasn't anything too special about that. Next time I come here I'd probably order a poppy seed bagel or pumpernickel (these looked good too!) Short Story: Best bagels in DC, cash only Long Story: I've been coming here for a while now and IMO they have the best bagels this city has to offer. I usually come on weekends, and so there's always a pretty long line. The line moves pretty quick, really no longer than 5 minutes to place an order. I almost always get the sausage, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel. The star of the show is the bagel itself. Although probably on the smaller size, the bagel is crispy on the outside, well seasoned, with the most warm and soft interior. It's the softest and chewiest bagel in the inside that I've had here in DC! They do have a pretty vast array of other bagels and cream cheeses, I just seem to stay within my comfort zone and get the same thing. I have tried the veggie cream cheese and it was delicious. Staff is nice - run by kind korean ladies. During the weekend morning rush, you can tell they're working their butts off - while maintaining a good attitude. They are fast and efficient and the food comes out quickly without mistakes. There are a few tables in the back. I think most people get their food to go and so I haven't had trouble finding a seat in the past. They are cash-only, so do bring cash. If you forget, there is an ATM on-site in the front of the store. All in all, best bagels in DC and so this place deserves nothing but a 5-star rating. Will be coming back. read more

I've lived in the area for awhile, but typically have gone to Bethesda Bagels or Bullfrog when I get the hankering for a bagel. This place was at least on par, if not better! It was efficiently run, despite the longish line, we got in and out with our bagels in less than 10 minutes on a Sunday morning. The everything bagel with lox and cream cheese with capers was delicious, but I was less impressed with the "great grain" bagel with sausage. I'd definitely opt for the bacon -- it looked great behind the counter and I instantly regretted my choice of sausage instead. Can't wait to go back! Note that it is cash only. Their menu says one thing and they'll charge customers in front of you a certain price for a certain sandwich and then you'll get up to the counter and order the same thing and they'll charge a dollar more or $.50 less or anything in between. They don't reason, they insist and like an episode of Seinfeld if you show any hesitation they'll snatch the food back from you until you give in. Furthermore they only except cash so there's no way to trace this and their receipts don't do line item transactions. Had this for breakfast before I flew back home. I don't know if it was bec it was a holiday (presidents day) but it was really crowded. The store is no frills and I think they might be cash only. I got bacon/egg/cheese on a garlic bagel. Now, I don't know what I was expecting with respect to the bagel but the bread wasn't garlic-y. There were dried garlic flakes baked on top.
