If you are a fan of Boiling Crab style seafood places, this place is NOT for you. When I heard they were opening up a bag seafood style restaurant in Berkeley I was extremely excited just to be let down. We tried their clam and shrimp in Atomic sauce which was pretty bland in my opinion, and got a side of garlic noodles-- big mistake. The garlic noodles were drowned in Maggi seasoning and unbearable to eat. Though we ordered the clams, SIX of them were completely shut... and since the orders are per pound, we definitely did not get our money worth. So tragic:/ would love for a good seafood place to open up around Berkeley. read more

We stopped here twice this week. I personally do not eat seafood but my husband loves it. I was pleasantly surprised at the non seafood options. The garlic noodles were great. Lemon pepper wings were super flavorful. My husband really enjoyed the seafood he ordered. Plus it's kid friendly they gave my son a free kool aid juice pack and they gave us all ice cream at the end. OMG! This place was great. It was my first time. I got the garlic butter flavor and it had a tiny bit of spice to it which was wonderful as I wanted some but was afraid if I ordered spicy it would have been too hot. (it probably would have been). If I could give Bag O' Crab a negative o, I would. Not sure when this place was a 3 and 4 rating are these mistakes or ratings meant for another sea food restaurant??? I purchased 4 garlic noodles and what was supposed to be catfish and fries , Boy was I confused , I don't know what that foolishness was I paid $36 for. Being from the south we know that a true sea food restaurant would never serve frozen unknown fish in a batter, dry, over cooked and old and claim this is fried cat fish, really . The fries were frozen cheap fries, not fresh cut potatoes or at least quality frozen fries, that crap came from a $1 store some unknown brand imported from God knows where. The garlic noodles tasted like old gummy card board, the noodles were cheap cold, gummy no butter , no garlic sauce, just tasteless. I tried to add garlic, butter, and olive oil this made it worse. To top it off 1 box had black straight hair in it. Just disgusting . My family was very upset and hungry. I took photos of this imaginary cat fish, fries and garlic noodles. My family refuse to eat this stuff, I had to throw $36 in the trash can. Do to the Cornovirus, I chose not to go back out, I should have called and demanded a refund, not a another meal. I'm done. I will never recommend this place nor purchase anything from Bag O' Crab not even water. A group of 6 was ready on Tuesday and showed up to be stunned by the arrogance of false advertising. Went back on Wednesday and staff said we are closed Tuesday. I'm a crab boil fanatic and trust me this place is fast food. We got a lb if mussels, garlic noodles, Garlic bread, fried oysters, and Dungeness crab. The oysters were fried in some bland flour batter. The garlic noddles were dry and bland as well. The boil sauce they use is more pasty/dry than oily. I guess some people prefer that, but I didn't. One of the main reasons why I gave this restaurant a 3/5 is because I've definitely had better and I'm extremely picky when it comes to food. My boyfriend and I originally wanted to come here on valentine's day, but the wait was 2 hours long. We came back on a Friday around 3 to 4pm, just before everyone got out of work. When we went inside, we signed up on their waiting list. It took approximately, 10 minutes for us to get seated. The restaurant itself was well designed, spacious and clean. The hostesses and waiters were extremely kind, attentive and knowledgeable about the food (A+ to that). We ordered C2, and garlic noodles. The sauce we choose was mild atomic sauce. The sauce itself was fairly spicy, but do-able and oily. In my opinion, there wasn't as much flavor, it was just spicy. (Remember I'm comparing it to The Kickin' Crab and Hot N Juicy Crawfish). The shrimp was fairly large and fresh, the sausages were addicting, the corn was fairly sweet, the potatoes were plain (that's how potatoes are supposed to be) and the clam's were small, but nothing new about that. The portion size was pretty good, considering both my boyfriend and I were full after just one bag. (We weren't sure if we were going to get an extra bag of shrimp when we arrived there). The garlic noodles were plain and a bit too oily as well. We ended up putting salt and pepper to make it more tasty. Overall, I would go back, but only if I was really craving for seafood. read more

Randomly saw this place one evening while walking around Downtown Berkeley and was craving something different, so I gave it a try. I didn't really have any expectations for Bag O' Crab's cajun seafood and Korean fusion concept, but it filled my belly and satisfied my tastebuds. I ordered the Grilled Cajun Fish Mango Sake and it was delicious and filling. It did come with more salad than I expected/wanted though (I would have preferred a higher ratio of fish than salad). The amount of the food was good and the price was reasonable. The fish tastes great, and the mango and sake gave it a nice freshness and zest that not only made me full, but made me energized to tackle the rest of my evening plans. My waitress/server, Coco (I think), was also really awesome and friendly. When I walked past by, I was just going to quickly glance at the menu on their window and continue walking, but as I was reading she came out, greeted me, and told me about the soft opening discount. Since she was so friendly, I decided to just go in since I was already hungry anyway. Although, I did have to wait a bit for my order. I don't care if there's a mistake on my order. As long as it's graciously corrected! From the mushy texture, gooey appearance and sour taste, it had all been previously frozen and probably not fresh. The sauce was more sweet and sour than spicy. I managed to eat one crab leg (so gooey that bent rather than cracking), one mediocre shrimp, one slice of the rock-solid sausage and two of bites of the mushy corn before putting it aside. So delicious! The style of the restaurant is much like Boiling Crab. I came here with pretty high expectations as I am a huge fan of Cajun seafood - they definitely exceeded that. For two people, we ordered 2 pounds of shrimp with potatoes and corn - 1 pound with the medium Szechuan & 1 pound with the medium Atomic Sauce. Similar to Boiling Crab, they give you a bib, plastic gloves, and a handful of limes for your meal. Regarding the flavors, the Szechuan was so flavorful, spicy, & delicious - definitely something unique! The Atomic Sauce was more of the buttery side, and the medium was not as spicy as Szechuan, but still yummy! Definitely recommend ordering a side of rice at the end to finish the sauce, as there is plenty left over in the bag. One note is that the portions are pretty small compared to other Cajun places I've been to (didn't seem like it was 1 pound of shrimp, maybe 1 pound in total WITH the sides we ordered), but nonetheless, it was still delicious! They got hit with a bunch of folks after me, but people who sat down 10 minutes after were served before me. Had to get up to the register to pay, however server did ask if everything was good 5 minutes prior and I should have said I need the check and get my arse back to work! I wasn't a big fan of this place, it seems like a lot of the youngsters from college that don't know much about seafood like this place. A couple that was there mentioned it was their 3rd time there this week so I figured it would be really good! Sadly I was let down, the sauce had no flavor it was just very greasy, there was a thick layer of just grease at the top of our boil bag....we asked for lemon butter sauce to dip crab meat into and the guy said no that the only sauce was the one in the bag, like seriously we just spent $80.00+, no lemons included not even the little wet towels those places normally provide. I only went here because the dead fish was not taking reservations because they were completely booked....but I wld have preferred to pick up crab from there, but I figured normally I enjoy the ambience and food together from the dead fish. Also lastly, we asked if they had crab crackers we could buy from them bc we wanted to eat this at the marina and they said no....how the hell do you sell crab and have no crackers for your customers, not everyone has that at home! Long story short don't believe the hype of the stars this establishment has. They got 2 stars because the Garlic noodles were amazing!!!
