The Romain lettuce must have been cut several days prior to me getting their salad.--see photo-- the edges that had been cut or bent--was orange colored. I went to show their server/order taker. He asked what I would like? I told him Brussels sprouts. He gave me an order for "free", but they were so charred that they were inedible (for me). I didn't eat them. This is a cool little brewery along Gilman street, surrounded by a sea of other breweries and cool places to eat and drink. The bartenders are extremely nice and helpful and the open atmosphere allows patrons to enjoy the fresh Berkeley air and watch the comings and goings of people on the northwest side of town. Their logo is especially catchy and creative. The beers I had were pretty good but perhaps not on the same atmospheric level as some of the more notorious breweries in the east bay.I think I need to buy one of their shirts on my next visit. read more

Second time visiting this location. (We've been to the Santa Cruz location as well.) Love this place. We parked on the street (was easy to find a spot on a Sunday afternoon) and ordered three pizzas and three beers at the counter. The beertender was so personable and fun. We sat in the open-air dining area (dog-friendly). The pizzas came out after about 10-15 minutes. Amazing Detroit-style pies (four pieces each). We all enjoyed our picks. The beers were great, too. Enjoyed our visit here--fine brewery with some strong beers. I particularly appreciated the diverse beer styles and many taps/offerings--love a brewery with different styles, and this place delivers on that. I did a flight here, and their black haze IPA, Missouri lean triple IPA and Gilman farmhouse were all impressive offerings. Their pineapple jardin sour and Push Rod porter were less successful (for me). Fun but feisty vibe in the interior--so many breweries I visit have a family vibe, but this was more city/keep it to yourself, which I do respect. And in fairness that might be more clientele than the brewery. A couple of people were there with dogs that my stepson wanted to play with, but were clearly not to be interacted with or trifled with. Wish they had more food options (just chips and snacks as far as we could see) and were a tad more interactive, but the beer is solid and the vibes low-key, and that's a pretty solid starting point for a brewery. read more

Gilman Brewing is a great place to grab a beer and some lunch on the weekends! We had their in house food which was great, but they also have food trucks that rotate during the weekends for other options. I am not a huge beer drinker but felt that they had options for everyone! To order food/drinks you go to the register at the front of the brewery (no servers per table). It has plenty of places to sit and can accommodate children and larger groups. read more

Went here with a friend on Friday 2/20 around 4p. The place was nearly empty, except for a group of two couples and another couple off to the side. It's definitely a no frills place and the service is nil. The woman working was less than welcoming or helpful. You order your beer and food at a counter upon entry and then given a buzzer to alert you that your food is ready so you can go pick it up along with your plastic utensils. We ordered a a couple of beers and the $20 Chimichurri Steak Sandwich with Arugula on an Acme French roll, (note, it's not a roll, it's a baguette), and the $15 Garden Salad with arugula, spinach, candied walnuts, goat cheese, apples, Meyer lemon, olive oil and fig balsamic vinaigrette. When we went to pick up our food we were more than a little taken aback by the tiny plate the sandwich and salad were served on (see small square plate in the photo, which is smaller than a 8" paper plate). The sandwich measured between 6-7" and was cut in half and the baguette is maybe 2" wide for $20. So we each got a 3.5"x 2" piece of sandwich. The salad was just a skimpy for $15 bucks. I wish I had remembered to take photo before we ate the sandwich and salad, but we were hungry. I realize inflation has driven up prices but this was ridiculous. The amount of food was barely enough for a 8-10 year-old child, if that. So maybe you're wondering if there are any positives to highlight? The answer is yes! The sandwich and salad were delicious. Just not delicious enough for $35 price tag. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the utensils are compostable and you don't have to bus your dishes! read more

Swung by to see a friend's band play. Tons of brews and some solid pub food made it work. The sound (you're probably not reading this for the sound) has all the effect of a rock band in an aluminum warehouse so bring ear plugs or sit in the adjoined room where the levels were equalized. I did enjoy the family and people in the spot and the friendly staff. It's a bit too far from me to be a local hang but I could totally see that happening if I lived in the east bay. I'm sure I went on the wrong night. it happened to be a special event reading of a new book release with two authors at the dialogue table. The place was packed and really no where to sit and eat on the ground floor. So I headed to the steps of the overflow dining area upstairs...but it was chained off! That didn't make sense at all. Why didn't they open the top floor overflow dining area? Isn't that what it's for, when downstairs is too crowded? I ended up eating on top of an old weighted barrel that's used to hold down a pole for attaching the string lights. There was bird turd on it. Yeah, great for the appetite, but I had no other option. Also, they had the old menus lying around, which caused confusion because they were missing things from the new ones. So why not remove the old ones? Someone somewhere is being lazy. For pizza, I ordered the Supreme, which also fell short. It was too bready. And just too salty. The pepperoni seemed to be the main culprit. I had taste fatigue by the end of the second slice. Really, this was just like an all meat pizza. They should've laced it with some mushrooms and green peppers like most Supremes to break the meat monotony. Otherwise, just call it Meatzza Version 2. For brew, I ordered the Banjo Cat, which was as good as the last time I had it. So that's one for redemption. And at least the beertender was better than the one I had last time. I originally went to Gilman Brewing for the Whimsey Market event they had going on and decided to order some food and a drink. I got a hemp hibiscus cider (bottled, not on tap) and a gluten free pizza and it was delicious. I've never seen a gluten free deep dish pizza and I was so impressed. It tasted great, but I didn't like that it cost me $50 I think it was all the add ons such as gluten free crust, vegan cheese, chicken, and pineapple. Something to note was that the service was beyond amazing. The guy that worked at the counter was super thorough and really wanted to make sure I got my order correct and even checked if a certain sauce was gluten free. I wish I got his name, he deserves a raise or promotion or something! Also, something to note is both the outside and inside areas are super cute and a great place for a casual hang out. They had a good selection of beers, including Pilsners, so I selected one of their lighter brews. The service was rapid. I kidded the bartender about closing their Pleasanton facility, but he explained that they're remodeling and will open again. While you're sipping your suds, check out the gigantic brewing tanks. OK, I've been here a few times and I even brought my family with a baby on almost 2 year-old and a dog to come and drink some really good beer. They have a kids area so that was great for them and they actually I don't know how long it's been they added a plant area where you can see some beautiful plants and they get their plants from the nursery just down the street which is so amazing. The beer is obviously great and I'm not even a beer drinker the smash burgers are amazing, which is basically what we get every time we go. I've actually brought my dog there once and he was pretty decent with the place even though he's not a very social dog and also we've brought my niece there will definitely be going back. The heaters are a plus during the winter. It's one of the best places I've been to in Berkeley for families or a couple. It's very friendly and very outgoing place to be. Great night out, in many ways. First off, it's a nice site. Outdoor seating, indoor quieter area, ordering by the brew tanks, and venue. From there, let's break it down. Beer! Lots of beer. I had a blackberry cider (crisp, tasty without overly sweet), a random beer (I don't know. My friend handed it to me. It tasted like beer), and a Raddler's something (already drunk when I ordered, but it was a German style beer with lemon, very lemon forward so good as a refresher but probably not for the hoppy beer enthusiast)). Cheers! Pizza! Detroit style, apparently. It's deep dish but more risen than typical deep dish. I've seen it called Sicilian style too. Tasty. Filling. Crazy combos. I had the pesto chicken and bacon one, which I was too hungry to take a picture of, but it was really good. Events! They host a ton of stuff and a variety. We had the sweet heat pineapple pizza to try something different. It was even better than we anticipated! Finishe our meal with their chocolate walnut blondie. Went to Gilman on the recommendation of some coworkers who said this place had good sours. So happy they recommended this spot because the sours were awesome, the service was great, and overall vibe of the brewery was really fun! Arrived about 15 minutes before they opened, sat in the car for a few minutes before walking over and to our surprise they let us in 10 minutes early. The beertender was awesome and had great customer service, she let my mom (who doesn't drink beer) taste 6 of them trying to find the right one for her and was extremely patient in the process. My mom ended up getting a pour of the barrel aged imperial stout and really enjoyed it. Tough beer to drink the whole thing as it was 9% alcohol, but she still liked it and was happy to be able to drink with us. Rest of us ended up getting flights, we did 5 pours each and all really liked our beers. I tried all 3 sours that were currently on draft as well as the tangerine saison and the barrel aged imperial stout. Favorite of the day was the guava jardin golden sour. We didn't order any food, but they do have a food menu and had a food truck set up outside. They had a TV and big projector screen playing one of the college football games. Place was also decorated for Halloween with skeletons and fake cobwebs all over the place. Overall a really cool spot! Would definitely be a regular here if it were closer to me. read more

Soooooo rude! We went at 8pm on trivia night knowing they close at 9. Guy served us one drink but when we went to get another he said he said he already closed everything because it was 9. I mentioned that it was only 8:35 (I showed him the time on my phone) and that trivia was still going full force next door, and he said 'nah'. I asked if I could pay with cash and have a glass of wine since that wouldn't use the taps, and he just shrugged. He wouldn't serve us but also wouldn't really be clear about why or what was going on. Won't go back, that guy was so rude.
