I came here expecting a true speakeasy experience, but I have to be honest...if you're looking for that "hidden" mystery, this isn't quite it. Most speakeasies I've been to require a password or are camouflaged behind a bookshelf or an ice cream shop. This one is literally just hidden by a curtain near the bathrooms. If you want to be a real speakeasy, you've got to put in more effort! Even a fake "Employees Only" bathroom door or a bookshelf would have been more creative than a curtain. It felt a little low-effort on the mystery side. Despite the lack of a cool entrance, the inside is actually pretty nice: With there Self-Serve Tap Bar. This was the highlight. The self-serve tech is a cool concept and fun to use. Atmosphere wise the room looks great, it's dark with cool blue lighting that sets a nice mood. There's a good amount of seating, so you aren't cramped. They offer an Indian fusion menu which is a unique twist for a lounge like this. It's a cool spot to hang out and pour your own drinks, but don't go in expecting a "hidden gem" experience. It's more of a lounge with a curtain than a true speakeasy.

I love my experience here! Service was phenomenal and everything was great. Parking as usual in the area is a bit harder to find so I recommend going early to make sure you can get there on time if you're meeting with someone. I absolutely love to speak easy room. I think it's one of the best parts there. Overall, really enjoyed it had so much fun there love trying all the different beers that they have to offer. For food everything was absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed the flatbread as well as the popcorn chicken.

So fun! Did you know the East Bay has a speakeasy and it lives within the Tap In Lounge? Such a fun little escape (I won't post a video because then I mean, what would make it secret then?) What's also equally as fun, is Tap In Lounge has a cool happy hour with delicious snacks and shareables that makes a trip here worth a cheers. I think the food is from a pop up inspired by or from East Bay Spice Company, and it's delish. We ordered happy hour margs (gorgeous presentation and equally as refreshing), the tikka masala flatbread with chicken kebab & tikka masala sauce, samosas, and tumeric buttermilk fried popcorn chicken with tikka sauce. Quite the spread! The tikka sauce, oh man! Could bottle it up and sell it..I enjoyed everything ~ crunchy and juicy small popcorn chicken bites, the flatbread (you can add other proteins) was unique but oh so flavorful, hearty samosas, and other menu offerings that are worthy of a second visit. Spot is aesthetically dimly lit, but not in vibes. Friendly and upbeat staff, I'm sure quite the party on the weekends. Fair pricing and only takeaway for the area, parking..easy for a rideshare drop-off, metered parking (if lucky), or paid garage parking around the corner near the theater.

Love this lounge!! There's a speakeasy beer tap in the back too but preferred to be out in the main area. Drinks are so unique and delicious! They are all school themed and the menu is an iconic composition book you'd use for school. Vibes were vibey and music wasn't overly loud. Great spot to just chat and lounge with friends! Didn't get to order the food but they have a large selection! They seem to be partnered with East Bay Spice so a lot of options are from there. Food smelled amazing and you could see them grilling meat next to the bar. Only downside is service feels lacking. They don't frequently check up on you and you have to flag them down multiple times. They also didn't seem the most friendly, though nothing rude, but that was just a bummer. Overall would definitely come again and hope that maybe I just had bad luck with service the one time I came!

Dark and cavernous, yet a cool vibe with an amazing soundtrack. I didn't come in here for the food, but I came for the drinks. I like this spot because I could pour my own ciders, taste them and so on. My husband was getting a beer and I chose to join him. I appreciated the ability to do so. We didn't get food because we were going out to dinner and I don't think that they had a lot of gluten free finds. But they had plenty of ciders. The only thing is that I had to pour into a clean, empty glass but that's not what I would call suffering. There was a guy behind the counter who let me in the back where I could get my drink. I got a drink as was satisfied. I'd come here for a quick drink, but as for a mealtime, this would not be my spot.

Was looking for a place to chill before a show at the UC Theater and found this spot that was about a 5 minute walk from the venue! Wasn't expecting much, but was happily surprised once inside! Staff is friendly and lots of seating around Friday 8pm. It was giving speakeasy vibes with the back door that leads to the bathroom and self serve taproom! House cocktails were great, but I was blown away by the Tikka Masala fries - sooo saucy and good!! If I lived closer, I would come here just to order these fries for takeout haha

I liked the vibe in here. We went bar hopping the day we came here and I have to say this was my favorite bar in the Shattuck area. I liked the look, the drinks were great and the speakeasy was cool. I didn't get to try their food but it sure looked good. We also tried a small amount of some passion cocktail in the speakeasy that was delicious. I'd definitely come back here.

If you didn't know, know ya…read moreknow...located essentially across the way from CAL in Berkeley, East Bay Spice to me is a hidden gem filled with such nostalgic memories shared with friends over the years. They closed for a time, and now seem to be thriving again! Heading to the Greek for a weekend show, we wanted to pop in somewhere close-by. We cozied up to bar seating, and enjoy a couple of martinis featuring local gin and vodka, and ordered some food to share: the Original Tikka Masala Flatbread (we had to finally try it!), and the Sev Puri Chaat (first time trying this ever!). Service was amazing, and if I could write this review purely on the originality and creativity of the menus, I would (see pics!) The menus were CD cases (remember those, ha) with a fun take on 'Spice Girls', titled 'East Bay Spice Company'. For Spice Girls fans, you will recognize what album this was derived from. Each page of the cd book was a different part of the menu, including drinks, happy hour (from 2-6pm), and food. So fun, and unlike anything I've ever seen before. The food was so fresh and delicious. Loved the pomegranate seeds and lightness from the Sev Puri Chaat, bite size garbanzo bean/potato goodness! And standing O for that flatbread..pro-tip: get a side of the Tikka Masala sauce to pour on top. Absolutely amazing. I'm a huge fan of Tikka Masala, and having that sauce be a base for a pizza...come on!! We did chicken as the protein. Overall, so happy to return and have East Bay Spice back apart of the Berkeley rotation again. Small, dimly-lit, cool digs. Also check out their sister spots: Tap in Lounge and Tipsea in Berk, Blue Rabbit Bar off San Pablo, and Lemon Drop in Alameda.

The presentation was impeccable, and the sauce was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. The chicken seemed like a leaner cut, possibly breast, but it was still tender and not overcooked. I thoroughly enjoyed this plate and would 100% come back to order it again. My husband ordered the flatbread, though I can't remember the exact name, and it was surprisingly delicious as well. It tasted almost like a pizza version of the chicken tikka masala, making it a great shareable option if you're looking to snack, chat, and enjoy cocktails. Speaking of cocktails, the bartenders seemed very knowledgeable and helped me choose a drink based on my preferred spirit and cocktail style. I ended up with the Skeleton Key, which was strong, but still paired well with the meal. I'd happily come back to try more cocktails and, of course, order that chicken tikka masala again.

There are some negative reviews here about rude, more accurately, unresponsive bartenders, and I don't think they get what this place is all about. If you want a chatty, friendly bartender, go to an Irish pub. This place is all about creating unique concoctions in volume. Having said that, I'll tell you a story. In March 2019, I was with a chatty bartender here, since it was a quiet night. I was looking at the vast array of bottles, and noticed something that said "Buffalo Trace" but looked different from their usual bottle. I asked her what it was, and she didn't know. It had about three fingers left at the bottom, so she looked at me mischievously and said, "wanna finish it with me?" So we did. Turns out, that 375 ml bottle was worth about $300. It was one of their experimental batches, made with oats in 2002. I found a bottle online in England and got it shipped here. Best whiskey I've ever had.
