I'd heard about this place from a few friends in the far East valley and was pleasantly surprised to see this location open closer to my house. We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant was fairly busy which is always a good sign! The prices are reasonable for the portion sizes and there's all the Mexican "staples" to choose from. We opted for carne asada tacos (one flour and one corn) and a bean burrito. There's a help yourself salsa bar with five flavor options as well as radishes, cucumbers, etc. Service was fast and they kept the seat yourself dining area very clean. I love that they have the salsa bar as well with tons of different options. I've had friends who have gotten burritos and quesadillas that said they are really good as well. I've eaten here a few times and usually enjoy the food. Tonight was terrible. I ordered an Al Pastor burrito and a carne asada taco. It was more fat and grissle than meat. More than half of the meat in my burrito was spit back onto my plate. It was tough and impossible to eat. Whoever trimmed the meat was either new, lazy, or just didn't care. But whoever and whatever was the cause it shouldn't have been served. I'd be disappointed if Taco Bell served this and their burrito is only $2.00. I know the usual quality control here so I will be back. I didn't say anything this time but if I am served that quality of good again I'll definitely doesn't up. I think it serves the most bang for your buck, it's super meaty and once you hit the condiments bar you can customize it to your perfect taste. I have been hearing great things about Backyard Taco and finally got around to trying it on a Taco Tuesday. All tacos were $2 (on every other day they are $2.65). I decided to order one of each taco (carne asada, pollo, birria, and al pastor) on their flour tortillas. All of them were honestly super good, and I think my favorite was the al pastor because it had so much flavor and a ton of sauce on top. There is an open condiment bar where you can get all of your salsa, cucumber, and lime which I really liked because you can pretty much make your food the way you want it. Their avocado salsa was super good, it had a nice avocado flavor and was nice and thick and was perfect on top of the tacos. I ended up dipping some cucumbers in the avocado salsa as well because it was so good! Definitely recommend for taco Tuesday read more

I think I've had their food catered before at a party and it was pretty good. Today was my first time eating at the restaurant. We showed up at around 9:25 pm and it was supposed to close at 10pm. The ambiance was great. However the salsa bar was out of limes and only had about 2 slices of radish left. The employee taking our order was extremely friendly and personable. I ended up getting the Vegetarian Crazy Potato which was described as being a baked potato with butter, sour cream and cheese, topped with cabbage and onions. You can also get it topped with meat for more $ if you want. I was extremely disappointed in the Crazy Potato. It came out in a big styrofoam bowl, in foil. My first bite was of cabbage and onion. I couldn't find the potato... The first bite was awful. I guess it must have been the onion. It tasted like B.O. onion. Truly gross. I scraped off the cabbage and onion as best I could. I found some potato. That tasted much better. Unfortunately I only got about 4 bites of baked potato. I don't know where the potato went. Did it evaporate when cooking? Melt away somewhere? A lot of stuff was stuck to the foil. Anyway the 4 or so bites of potato were pretty soft and smooth. More like a potato soup or mashed potatoes than a baked potato. Next time I'll try something else on the menu. I was not impressed with the crazy potato. My husband got the pastor burrito bowl and enjoyed it very much. I was just in today with my friend. I've been there plenty of times and I've had a great service and great food. I just like to mention that the girl that was taking our order, I believe her name was Caroline, had her finger in her mouth, she wiped her nose with her hand three times and then proceeded to touch the register, take my credit card, hand me the pen to sign my receipt. I guess maybe I am more hypersensitive nowadays with a pandemic. But I think at this point service workers dealing with food could be a little bit more careful and sanitary. What's the all hype about? It was the worst tacos I've had in a long time. Taco Bell truly tastes better. I now realize that most people do not truly know what good food tastes like and thus leave raving positive reviews on average and poor restaurants. The carne asada was dry, chewy, and had cartilege in it. ZERO spice or marinade. The birra shredded beef was wet but dry at the same time. No flavor The chicken was decent, the most flavorful, and tender... but nothing special. At least it had some spices. The salasas were too spicy. There is no mild. The guac was so watery, just blended avocados. The flour tortillas are SO thin. And they are really "street tacos" given how little they are overall. There's no way this place won some legitimate award 8 years in a row! I would rather go to any *bertos generic Mexican and get better food. Most absurdly, this location is closed on Sundays? What? I did not like the loud intercom they used to call out orders. It's like Inn N Out Burger, but more expensive and less filling. Three tacos on taco Tuesday was $6 but I was still hungry. At least at inn N Out, I'm full for $2.50 (One burger), but to be honest, that's not a flattering conparison. Inn N Out is bleh. Forget about Backyard Taco. So I have tried the tacos a few years back at the location on university and I have never been a fan of the chicken tacos or asada tacos from here as the times I tried them the chicken is dry and almost burnt and the asada lacks in flavor. Today I decided to give them another try since it's been almost 2 years since I last tried them. Should have known better , we got al pastor tacos and birria tacos and burrito . The al pastor taco meat was very dry and overcooked. The birria burrito was a let down it was a mess it was not wrap correctly and lacked flavor and it was more of a bean and broth from birria burrito and had lots of bay leaves in it. Which is a shame because the birria tacos where the only thing I liked from this place. Does not taste like authentic Mexican food *Your better off heating up a Jose Ole chimichanga And that have more flavor. OMG, I cannot even express how disgusted I was with the food here. I ordered the Bueno Bowl with chicken, and what I got literally looked like vomit. A big Styrofoam container of chewed up cabbage, and some other crap on top of watery, cold chicken. When I say watery, I mean almost a soup. I was only able to take 3 bites, I couldn't force myself to eat anymore. My son's cheese quesadilla was cold and was a soft taco sized tortilla, folded in half. Literally took him 4 bites to eat it. Went through the drive thru tonight. Put in my large order and when they asked if I wanted any sauces, I told them 6 pico de gallos and 6 avocado sauces. They ended up only giving me 3 of each, and they were only half full, and the avocado sauce was already turning brown, and the pico de gallo did not look like the tomatoes were ripe at all. Instead of the tomatoes being red, they were pink. As soon as they handed me my bag of food, I was immediately overwhelmed by a strong chemical smell. They must be using new plastic bags because I have never smelled that before. Thought, well hell its closer , still crazy busy. we go for lunch on a Friday, super excited, Love me some tacos and salsa. I got carne asada and Birria tacos. Hubby got a al pastor tacos, chicken Torta, and carne burrito. We got all hot sauces and guac. OMG, they didn't season anything. ANYTHING!! Every meat was bland with no flavor, all hot sauces were watered down messes. The hottest one tasted like bland hot chemicals. The guacamole‍ tasted like they threw the avocados in a blender and said BAM THERE IT IS (I'm sorry but you are not suppose to be able to drink guacamole through a straw!!!) Never, not ever have I been to any Mexican restaurant and you had to add salt to everything you ordered. Even the little hole in the walls know that. Nasty, everything was just so disappointing. I get that a lot of taco places that cook these meats and the fat is still around, but when you have more fat the actual meat in the tacos it's a little stomach inducing. Never again. Where do I start? I ordered a carne asada burrito and asked to sub guac for sour cream and add cheese... Then I ordered two tacos. Then I go to pay and she says $15.43. After I pay I look at the receipt thinking I was mis charged, noticing they charge a dollar extra for each sour cream and cheese even though guac is more expensive and being substituted... I ask the young cashier why.. She just says sorry and shrugs her shoulders... She never offers to fix the problem and walks away.. Reading reviews of this place I drive off thinking it was gonna be awesome no matter what and don't worry about it... 6 miles later... I get home, there's no hot sauce in the bag, no napkins and they wrapped the burrito in tinfoil and then stuck it on a styrofoam thing that looks like what a raw steak or chicken would have been wrapped with from the grocery store... Why in the heck would you waste things like this? It didn't need it! It was already packaged! No reason to create more trash in the world.. So, setting that aside I was excited to dig in and eat some of this food. As a Third generation native to Arizona, I love good Mexican food! I got a few bites into the carne asada burrito and it had beans in it! Who the heck puts beans in a carne asada burrito? About half way I had to stop and throw it out due to the chewy pieces of meat that were filled with fat. It was disgusting not to mention the cheese I was charged for was never in the burrito at all. I couldn't eat another bite. So then I move to the tacos... Again! Chewy over cooked low grade meat. I would have had a better experience at Filly B's and I don't care for that place at all! This is a great place for Taco Tuesday! I had two pollo asado tacos on corn tortillas. They double layer these tacos, which are street taco style, so you have two layers (won't soak through quickly). There is so much meat on these tacos that you can literally pull one tortilla aside put half the meat on it and end up with two tacos! My chicken was a tad on the dry side, but other than that definitely just like a backyard taco from a Mexican household. Seasoning was good and I added The roasted salsa, which has a little bit of spice,. It's not the best roasted salsa I've had, but it's pretty decent. I would do the tacos here again, for sure! I also ordered a bean and cheese quesadilla but I wasn't impressed. The tortilla is what I call "American" tortillas that you find in the grocery store. Not very authentic at all, except for the fact that it looks like a tortilla and probably has the same ingredients or similar. I also felt like the beans may have been canned, couldn't really tell, I will have to try those again, separately. Cheese was good. If you know your tortillas, you will be disappointed with the flour tortillas they use here. They have a basic salsa bar, which has the pickled red onions, cucumber slices, radish slices, lime wedges and three or four different salsa types, one of which is guacamole. Was really looking forward to trying a new, authentic Mexican restaurant. I have to say that the staff was very nice, BUT.... The atmosphere is like eating in a warehouse. It is very sterile and boring. Now, to the food. I ordered the chicken tacos, beef tacos, beans, and chips and salsa for myself and husband. The chicken had absolutely no taste at all and had the texture of reheated meat. Very unpleasant! The beef tasted burnt with a chewy, reheated texture as well.
