Nice local spot. Average menu choice but nice atmosphere, good beer choice, and kid friendly.

The service is good and the outdoor seating is nice as well. Some people say it's too smoky, but that's only if you sit in the smoking area. The entire inside section is non-smoking. I've always had a good time when i went there. read more

One of the best restaurants I've ever been to! A true gem of Northern VA. I've been here 3 times already at varying times and the service is always unparalleled. The servers are so so friendly and attentive, and the manager has visited our table every time. I have a severe nut allergy and they accomodate me with no issues whatsoever. And the food! The food is off the charts good. The calamari in particular is fantastic; tender, crispy, and impeccably seasoned and complimented with the ginger sauce. I've tried a new main dish every time and I've always been so impressed. You can't get food this good at these prices anywhere else in the area. A must visit for sure! read more

Excellent customer service and food! The crab cakes are super meaty and the fries are not too thin or thick and have a delicious seasoning. The shrimp poboy is huge and has fresh shrimp fried to perfection. The Caesar salad is great also. The baked potato is baked perfectly and has melted cheese if you get it loaded. The chocolate molten cake is moist and rich but not too sweet. The only down side is Pepsi products lol. Can't wait to come back and try some other dishes! read more

I use to go to Backyard all the time but have since decided to shy'd away. For one, there is an old guy up there (glasses\hunched over the bar)that acts like he owns the place and has a habit of being rude to many new patrons(Especially young women and guys). I also had the experience once where he told my girlfriend she wasn't "welcome in the bar." We have no idea what this nut job was talking about and we moved away from him. The staff said just to ignore him as "that's the way he is." WTF? We were later told by a regular that he apparently spends a lot of money in the bar so the staff ignores his rude behavior. I've never seen anything like it in ANY other bar he would of been asked to leave and cut off. The second problem with the bar is the late night bar fights regularly attract a constant police presence in the parking lot. The police sit in the 7-Eleven parking lot across the street waiting to follow cars out of the parking lot. Chances are you'll see one or two cops driving around the parking lot and maybe be followed out. The staff is nice and friendly. We have never had a problem with them. It's hit and miss if can find a seat in the Winter. There's maybe 30 seats inside the place around a small long thin bar area. About 7 3 chair tables along the side of the bar cramped against the wall. During the Summer there is no problem and outside bar is quite nice. The bar is usually a late night stop for people heading home who want one more late beer. There's no dance floor, some times there's a DJ. It hit or miss on the crowd. Because the bar is small it can be rather smokey. read more

This is a nice local place to go and meet other suburbanites to eat, drink, watch a game, etc. The food is kind of average but they do have good deals on appetizers for happy hour. Backyard used to be a sports bar, but there has been a big turnover in managers and staff that has changed it for the worse. Last week I stopped in to watch the Washington Capitals -- our local hockey team. "Can you turn the sound on?", I asked, at least on the TV I was watching. "No" was the answer, with some lame excuse that people might play the jukebox, Well tonight they put the friggin' state of the union speech on audio! I came hear to get away from politics play trivia and watch some sports. This place has really gone downhill. There are plenty of other REAL sports bars in the area -- Buffalo Wild Wings will put on local sports and will not subject you to politics. read more

Stumbled upon this restaurant and saw their patio. Food was just ok. But the service was terrible. I was eating alone so I assume waitress figured other tables would have a larger bill/tip? After I was sat, the table next to me was seated and served before me. I finally was able to order a drink and she apologized for taking so long "because they inputted it wrong in the computer." I ordered dinner and a different person delivered it and left before I could order another glass of wine. I finished my dinner and now my water. The waitress finally appears to take my plate and says "Im sorry Ive been slammed." Its been 29 minutes since Ive finished my dinner and still haven't seen my check. Waitress brings me my check and says "thanks for your patience." How about you comp something if you are really sorry? She has apologized 3 times (each time she came to the table). First time at Backyard grill and our waitress was really nice... but I've had better food and drinks. I got a house salad with champaign vinaigrette and my salad was drowning in dressing. We also ordered drinks around the table and no one liked what they ordered. I got a mango mojito and all I could taste was the sweet syrup... yuck. On the bright side our waitress was really sweet and they have a really nice outdoor seating area! read more

I was in the ladies restroom on Monday May 9th, 2011. Another female patron complained to the manager about a toilet that was a clogged mess. Moments later, a man flung open the door of the ladies room, yelling that we need to get the F*ck out of the bathroom, and that he is sick of F*cking bitches always complaining about the bathroom. One of the other two women in the bathroom had to physically struggle with the man to close him out of the bathroom and I helped her hold the door shut. I was horrified to learn that the man was the manager on duty!! I complained to the owner, Mr. Robbie Qreitem, who declined to take any appropriate action. I have an email to prove that the man admitted his behavior to the owner, and that the extent of the owner's response was to say that he is sorry and it will never happen again. I don't own a restaurant, but I'm pretty sure that the verbal assault of female patrons in the ladies bathroom is NOT a second-chance kind of offense. read more

Worst restaurant experience ever. Stay away from this place unless you come here to watch sports and drink. Our waiter didn't mentioned his name, never greeted us, never came to check if we needed anything literally only took our order and ran my payment. Literally just asked what we wanted to order. We order a wrap and a cheese burger. The wrap was nothing special but was eatable( you can't really mess up deli meat wrapped in a tortilla) but the burger was AWEFUL! It looked like a regular frozen burger you get at the grocery store, no seasoning on it at all, and it looked like it had either fallen in charcoal or grilled in a dirty grill. The fries were way over seasoned and had a sweet taste to them. I didn't eat them. A lady came by at the end of our meal (never gave us her name or who she was)and ask how everything was. I let her know I wasn't satisfied with my meal and she immediately got defensive. She stated that the sprinkle seasoning on top of the burger and that they clean their grills every day. She then sarcastically said "I'm assuming you don't want to take this home then" and giggled. She said she'll take it off our bill and I said that's fine. To my surprise when she came back she said she had only taken 50% off the burger because I had eaten half of it and stated that this was fair. on two different occasions i ordered food and got something different. the second time, the waitress (christin) didn't come back for at least 20 min. on both occasions they charged me for my food and didn't even acknowledge that they messed up. worst customer service ever. and now they are charging a cover on weekends?? for what? my friend plays guitar up there every once and a while and not even him playing there will get me to go up there anymore. cant say enough bad things about this place and will be sure to spread the word to everyone i know. read more

Really enjoyed our dinner at Backyard Grill. Seated right away, and the server came to take our drink orders immediately. I ended up getting a very good salad....fresh ingredients and a good sized serving. The food was brought out in a timely manner. The manager stopped by to make sure everything was ok. That was a nice touch. The patio looked like a nice place to eat but it was a hot day and we opted to eat inside. Lots of TVs if you are interested in watching a sports event. I'm looking forward to another visit to Backyard Grill. read more

The Backyard Grill was recommended by the staff at our motel and was in easy walking distance. I would like to say we were greeted by the hostess when we entered but I don't think "you want to sit inside or out" could be considered a greeting. She took us to our tabe and left without saying anything more. Our waitress promptly appeared and greeted us and took our drink order. Our waitress was very attentive and was the highlight of our visit. The food was served within about 10-minutes of ordering. Our steaks were not prepared as we ordered, I ordered mine medium well and it arrived more medium rare and the mashed potatoes were basically cold. Our salad was nothing more than a bed of lettuce with a couple of croutons scatted about. They have TV's located in view of every table and would probably be a good place to have a drink and watch a game, but the food is just not up to par. Our total bill for two people was well over $50.00 and the quality of food was no where worth that. The Backyard Grill is not a place that we will visit again. read more

I been going here for years, from before the remolding and after and from regular hh nite to weekend party nights. always a great time. I run a local motorcycle club around here n this owner is always down for charities n to give back to communities. I have read some of other peoples comments, it seems u are expecting this place to be Jackson s in Reston or clydes!! there are smoking section n non smoking sections, also if u can't afford $5 cover charge on a saturday night maybe u shouldn't be out on a Saturday, in fact look for a new job during ur weekend., go rent a movie at ur local redbox instead. service sometimes do get crazy, well BECAUSE THEY ARE BUSY, and it's a busy place when summer time comes. it is what it is!!! be patient and enjoy urself. I hate places that are too flashy and charge $6 dollars beer, how u sleep at nite. anyways this is just my 2cent. comment back if u don't like what I said, more spaces for friends and I to be at. read more

Backyard Grill on an early Sunday afternoon is most relaxing. Several big screen televisions if you want to watch sports. I ordered a glass of wine at only $3.50. Now that's a deal. My husband ordered the turkey club wrap, and I ordered the Greek wrap. Each wrap was stuffed with turkey and chicken and was delicious. I would recommend for a mid range priced restaurant. read more

Meh! We bought a Living Social deal for this restaurant. It wasn't what we were expecting. When we walked in it immediately smelled of smoke. Is that even legal? We continued to smell it the whole time. What appeared to be the manager visited the tables around us but not ours. We also had such a hard time hearing our waiter. It was so loud in there because of the music and people. I left a thumbs down when Living Social asked how it was. I didn't think anything of it; I was just giving an honest response to the question. I got a snippy message back instead of asking why I gave it or how they could make it better they got defensive. They should of realized that running the deal was a good way to new customers and hope to get them to come back. They definitely didn't show that they understood that concept. Their customer service could definitely improve. The food was ok except the fries were way too salty. We could go get better food and service at a better price elsewhere. read more

Went here with my son on Monday about 6:30. The place was pretty slow and plenty of tables were available. It was our first time there and the place seemed nice. One thing I noticed that I liked were the weekly specials were written out on a chalkboard by the tables along with another chalkboard listing the draft beers. And they were big enough so that all the surrounding tables could see. That was pretty cool. Our waiter's name was Ryan and he was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Drinks and food came out in good time which they should have since it was slow. My kid had the kid's cheeseburger which is a kid's size hamburger patty on a regular full size bun. Seeing that my kid didn't want to eat so much bun with such a small patty, I took a knife and cut off the extra bun edges to make the bun match the burger. For such a nice place I was def surprised by this. I shouldn't have had to do that. But he liked the burger after I did that and said it tasted good. I had the gyro after hearing Ryan's recommendation and it was really good. The fries were nice and crispy just the way I like them. Waited a longer for the check than I thought I'd have to and after seeing Ryan standing at the end of the bar I got up and walked over and asked for it again. He said he was waiting on a glass of wine and would be right over. Our table wasn't far from where he was waiting, so if the bartender is that slow getting him the wine, just bring me my check first and go back and get the wine. By the time the wine was ready for the table next to us, he would've been picking up our payment. read more

Visited this place a week ago with my family. This was maybe my 4th time eating here. All other times have been fine however this time was not so fine. As soon as we sat down we ordered our appetizer (sampler platter) our server was not writing down any of our orders, just nodding his head which is never a good sign. About 20 minutes in, we track down our server and ask him about the status of our appetizer. He goes to "check" and then comes back with our entrees and apologizes and says he forgot about the appetizer but that he sent the order in now. We told him we don't want it anymore since our food came out already but he says it's too late because he rung it in already. Whatever. Someone finally brings the appetizer towards the end. We haven't seen our server in a long time. We must have caught the attention of the manager since we were looking around for the server. The manager comes over and we explain to him what happened. He says okay I will take care of it. He took off 10% off our appetizer LOL. Not even half of what the appetizer cost. Just a terrible experience from the staff to the management. read more

Stopped in today to grab lunch while out and about Sunday afternoon. The waitress was nice enough, but my wife and I split the Fajitas for lunch. The meat was so undercooked neither of us were able to cut it, just a 4 inch by 5 inch chunk of meat, so obviously the kitchen was unable or didn't care about cutting the meat either. Since the steak was over half of the meal we spoke to the manager. He explained that the cut of meat was supposed to be tough like that?!? I asked, To the point of being inedible? He looked agitated as if the overcooked shoe leather was our fault. He offered no suggestions and he just stood beside our table rather awkwardly as he watched the football game on the big screen TV over his shoulder. He finally blurted out in a even more angered tone that he would subtract the cost of the steak from the $22 entree and took off before we could say anything. There was no attempt to offer desert, another entree, nothing. But the bill did have $5 taken off of the $22 total, obviously $5 was not even close to half as promised. My wife or I have never eaten in a restaurant where the manager instead of trying to rectify an obvious problem, became perturbed and combative. We live local and we are involved in our community HOA and interact with many people within a 5 mile radius of this establishment. We will be sure to share with all our friends and family not to frequent this "dump" with horrible food and angry management staff. I usually don't go out around this area, but tonight I wanted to go somewhere close by. I even looked up Yelp about V5 and Cafe Martini and decided to go to Backyard because other places had worse reviews (2.0 vs. 2.5 stars). The night started out ok. I was kind of glad that I tried a new place that was close to home. The band was fine, food was fine, our first two round of drinks were fine too. Then our group noticed that our cranberry & vodka drinks got darker and darker (too much cranberry & not enough vodka) on the 4th & 5th rounds of drinks. When we brought it to the manager's attn, he brought a glass of cranberry to our table to show us a color comparison of what cranberry looks like (in a very arrogant way) and what a splash of vodka in cranberry looks like (NO, we wanted a splash of cranberry in vodka like the first 2 rounds - not a tsp. of vodka in cranberry juice!). My friends were so insulted/disgusted that a "manager" talks to customers in that manner, so we left. I'm not picky about where I go (I would even give Ned Divine 4 stars for trying), and we usually spend hundreds on drinks everywhere we go (not like we wanted freebies), but after what we witnessed tonight, we would never come back - didn't seem like he wanted/needed our business so we have no problem bringing it elsewhere. read more

They truly understand the meaning of a real meal! I am surprised at how fresh everything is.. no soggy fries, no refried french fries, no brown broccoli. Two stars for outdoor patio. Everything else was horrible. Came here with 15 people for a work happy hour. Waiter kept getting drink orders wrong. For example our boss ordered bourbon and ginger and got gin and ginger. Another ordered kettle one and ginger and got vodka and tonic. I think they were overwhelmed by the large group. The waiter also kept changing the price of drinks. First he said well drinks were $3 next time somebody asked they were $3.50 and lastly somehow got to $4. Don't recommend this place for a work outing due to lack of customer service. Our boss at the end told us to never pick this venue again. read more

The menu is good, everything is made in-house, but the crowd and the service are on the lower end. There are two to three great bartenders, but the atmosphere is dismal, unnerving, and spilling over with over-served guests. I went maybe three times total before I became overwhelmed and annoyed by the behaviors of the bar guests. It's clear that the crowd is taxing of the staff, who will often show their cards in terms of their personal stress. Get the food, they deliver. read more
