Great patio lunches! The garden atmosphere is hard to beat. The sandwiches are always perfect and generous - half is all I can eat! There is a nice assortment of sides and a 'bar' for additional garnishes like carrots, pasta salad, beets, pickles, etc. Service is friendly and they don't mind our lingering to talk when we finish eating! Today my wife and I had a great experience at Back street. I heard about it from a post my wife shared on Facebook. As I watched the post and read the inspirational story of the owners and all the history they had,Then watching the short video I felt propelled to check it out. Me being an HVAC technician, always on the go always on the hunt for a good deli sandwich. I'm constantly trying to eat better and stay away from fast food joints. I've lived in riverside my whole life 43 years now and have never heard of this place. I've always loved the culture, the old Architecture and the people. This place is a little bit of all of that!! My wife, my son and I enjoyed our lunch today. My wife had the Turkey sandwich and loved it, While I had the roast beef dip!! Then Keith came out and checked on us with great customer service and hand delivered one of the best pieces of banana cream pie I have ever had! I am not a sandwich fan at all...but I saw this place advertised on KTLA twice and it looked so good. Luckily I was off work today so I could go try this place out! So delicious. I had a half roast beef sandwich on sourdough. It was so good! Potato salad was amazing. I'm from the south and that was some of the best I've had since living in CA. Beautifully stocked salad bar with lots of pickle choices! However, I wish that I was asked if I wanted any kind of mustard for my sandwich. Beautiful outdoor space with lots of trees, umbrellas, and misting fans to keep you cool. Nice girls working outside to clear your trays and refill your drinks. Can't wait to go back! read more

I love this place! Been going here for 12 years now and I have no complaints. I usually order a turkey sandwich on a French roll and a side of potato salad. This restaurant is so good it only needs to be open from 11am-3pm. Yes. You heard right! Tremendously delicious sandwiches, fantastic sides, and a pasta/salad bar that holds its own. Make sure you come with an empty stomach! The staff is friendly and polite. With every dining experience you feel like a part of the family. Heck, my parents became engaged here and we kids (now grown adults) bring our own families and friends here to partake in the splendor that is a Backstreet lunch. You won't be sorry you stopped by. Very cute little place. You walk up to order your sandwich and then they have a little bar area with vegetables and toppings. The garden is beautiful and they have a little back house that you can reserve for gatherings. It's not huge so you can't fit more than 20 or so. read more

Well, after coming here several times with the hubs, I think I'm FINALLY a convert. The secret? Ordering the tuna on a roll and layering it with bread and butter pickles. Thanks everyone at Backstreet for have the great idea for taking care of everyone like family.. I felt at home and really appreciated for coming in. I came in on Wednesday and was almost thur the line to check out and I forgot my debit card. Talk about embarrassing . Tall gentleman told the cashier to put it on his tab and not to worry about it. I told them I would be back. They insisted not to worry about it , but I couldn't. I came back with the money and they would not take it. So I stuck it to that tip jar. no good deed go's unnoticed. A great place where you don't have to feel guilty after eating. Good fresh food everytime. Great pies. I believe everything made fresh everyday. My go to in Riverside for now on. I literally crave the turkey on squaw sandwich. The combination of butter, mayo, paprika and cheese is simply the best. The flavor of the turkey really shines through. I also love the ham on sheepherders. My favorite side is potato salad although the baked beans and coleslaw are good as well. Hands down my favorite potato salad at a restaurant. The wide array of fresh veggies and pasta salad justifies the price for the few who seem to complain about the price. I love the ambiance and friendly staff. Haven't been here for some time. Decided last minute to go here. Been working in Portland since January of this year. Portland has some amazing world famous cafes and restaurants. I hope the owner reads this review and learn from this. This not just a critique but they really need to figure this out. 1st. Sandwich meet are sliced too thin. It makes the sandwich meet taste dry. 2. There is also little to no taste to these sandwich meat. 3. You have two people greeting customers to make the sandwiches. The two guys up front interfere with each other over our order. Granted we were a family of 4, there should be no confusion because a teenager working at McDonald's can repeat the order without screwing that up. 5. You have a short counter and a ton of girls running behind the counter. Try a number calling system and delivering the food or have the customer come back to get it when the food is done. The crowd of workers in the back and crowd of customer makes a noisy store front and will cause a confusion. Plus you really don't need a line of people in front of your store. 6. You charge $11.75 per sandwich plus drink makes our order to be $60. A Panera opens close by and it will shut you guys down. You need to offer a better service for that kind of money. The two star because your restaurant exterior is nice and shaded. Granted you might have a crowd from the courthouse but you have competition when Simply Simons makes a tastier sandwich. I suggest the owner take a trip to Indio and try TKB (called The Kids' Business - it is a real place out in Indio). Don't let the barren desert fool you how well this place does because they draw in the crowd. Their sandwich are fantastic, not dry, tasty and fresh! TKB can move anywhere and take over. Backstreet has delicious, simple, fresh food and sweet, quaint atmosphere with great service. They have a fairly limited menu, but, like In'n'Out, that enables them to do it greatly. They have hot and cold sandwiches on a variety of breads, and all orders come with either potato salad or baked beans and endless salad bar, with pasta salad, pickles, bean salad and more. They also have a variety of delicious desserts, including their famous banana cream pie (which, if you eat right before they close, you might be able to snag a free piece). The restaurant is located on a tiny 'back street' of Riverside, in what looks like someone's grandma's patio (in a cute way!). All the seating is outside under a canopy, and the misters for the hot weather. The man making the sandwiches, whom I have seen every time I've been there for my entire life, is kind of scary to me, but last time, I took my year-old in and he ended up bringing my son a little piece of banana cream pie, which he even placed in front of me so I could decided if I wanted him to have it or not. So I saw his softy side! All the other ladies who work there (also forever) are super friendly and patrol the patio taking trays, getting refills, bringing boxes and whatnot. The sandwiches are fairly expensive, and so I wouldn't blame someone for saying Backstreet's overrated. But the sandwiches are large (I always only eat half) and you do get lots of sides, plus the atmosphere is just so lovely, that I have never felt it was overpriced. Variety bread choice. Tuna sandwich on rye really good. Variety of pies for dessert. I passed on dessert. Whole sandwich with side salad or bag chips $11.11 before tax.
