Almost literally hidden off a backstreet (no pun intended) off of Brockton Avenue, this sandwich spot didn't even have a sign advertising that these sleepy looking houses sandwiched (also no pun intended) between the backside of an auto shop and another business' parking lot are home to one of the best sandwich spots in town. They have a simple menu of sandwiches to choose from and you pick what you want and they make it in front of you as you wait. When your sandwich is done you pick your side and then move on to the best part- the mini veggie bar where you can pick out some extras to munch on, including my absolute favorite bread and butter pickles, and a delicious pasta salad. Add some carrot sticks in to that mix and I can honestly say that you have a meal worth the price that you pay for it. Once you receive your food, you move on to the most beautiful outdoor patio dining area that I think you can find in Riverside or any of it's surrounding cities. Canopies and trees offer ample shade for you to sit under while you have lunch and chat with your friends/family/lunch partners. The whole experience will leave you relaxed and satisfied. The seating is outside but spread around, well shaded and all sorts of spots that feel private, comfortable and cozy. They are a little tucked away on Nelson Street off of Brockton in the Brockton Arcade area, but they are certainly worth finding. I had a really great experience here at Backstreet Restaurant! The place looks very unique and its a pretty small place just like all the other small businesses in the Brockton Arcade area. When I got there the line was moving pretty fast. I ordered a roast beef sandwich with comes with a side of your chose and access to the veggie cart which has salad, pickles, and pasta! The roast beef was filled to the brim which was great! You really get your moneys worth specially when you can get as much as you want from the veggie cart. Try to get there early, they are only open during lunch time (11am-3pm) so its kind of hard to eat here because you might be in school or work far from here. This place is not bad. The food is not bad. But everything is just OK....nothing too special. As someone else already stated in a review, you go to the counter and tell them what meat and bread you want, they slap some cheese and mayo/mustard on it and that's that. After you pay there is a small deli self serve bar behind you with pickles, horseradish, and some other sandwich stuff on it that you can add for free if you want. Everything is either homemade or cut/baked fresh so that is very nice. Employees very friendly and helpful. I had a baby with me so they actually walked my tray out to a table for me instead of my juggling the kid and tray. They also had employees outside that circulated and re-filled ice tea and water as well as took away dishes in a timely manner. The outside atmosphere is gorgeous, lots of green plants and decor, bird feeders, etc. I want my own house patio to look like that! Was curious about this little eatery in the middle of a commercial block. I looked at it then walk in to try the food. I loved the atmosphere as it was a combination of Hawaiian-San Francisco nuance. Yelp showed me the menu because I didn't see a menu until I got inside the restaurant. It showed all the sandwiches at $9.19 each which included potato salad, cole slaw or chips. When I entered I saw sandwiches were now $13 + tax. I could afford it because I loved the ambiance of the place. I ordered a corned beef on rye and a turkey San for my wife. Also got potato salad and cole slaw for my wife as it came with the order. The condiment bar had pickles, pasta salad, cucumbers and cut celery all packaged up. Everyone was friendly. When I got home though my wife complained the turkey San on sourdough was soggy because the bread was thin and they put too much cheap mayonnaise on it was inedible. She took one taste of the coke slaw and asked me to taste it. It was the worst tasting cole slow I ever had. It was so salty we couldn't eat it. The potato salad was edible but not the best I ever had or even in the top ten. The corned beef on rye was okay but I really didn't appreciate the store bought rye bread as it was thin, soggy and without taste. I really wanted this place to be good enough to bring my wife and friends to. I still want a memorable experience from here so I'll try coming back again to give it a more favorable review. Oh, by the way, I can report this restaurant to the city for price gauging during a pandemic. Went there last Thursday. It was awesome just like I remember! It was like seeing and old friend, the sandwiches were outstanding!

I'm giving this place 3 stars because of the price. For two sandwiches, a side of potato salad, a cup of baked beans and one drink, my total was $28.50. I guess it's not bad at $14.25 for each sandwich but I wasn't entirely blown away by my meal. The atmosphere appears country/shabby chic. The outside dining area is very large and spacious, which from the outside, I would have never guessed it was that big. You can dine inside the restaurant but it is rather small. Back to the part about the sandwiches. You walk up to a counter(like a subway) and choose from a selection of bread. I chose the French bread and turkey for the meat. The bread isn't toasted, don't even know if you can request it, but you're asked if you want mayo and mustard. You move down and are asked what side you'd like. The choices are potato salad, chips or baked beans. I chose potato salad. Once you're done paying, they inform you of the "salad bar" behind. From there you can select pickles, cucumbers, some type of pasta salad, celery sticks and cranberry sauce from a can. After that, you seat yourself. The bread was soft, the turkey tasted fresh, the potato salad......okay. But hey, My Dr. Pepper wasn't flat and made it easy to get it all down. I saw that they had a selection of pie from another Yelp review but I honestly did not want to fork over another 14 bucks for a slice. Overall, it was a cute little place to check out and the only real complaint I have is the price. I thought they would have more of a selection but again, food was decent.
