I have only ever walked out of a restaurant for piss-poor service once or twice in my life. Forty-five minutes for a BLT, Chicken Fingers, and fries is unacceptable. Especially when the server didn't so much as stop by the table once to say anything whatsoever about the delay, ask if we needed anything else, or apologize for being so slow. We walked away hungry at 7:00 PM after placing our order at 6:15. The folks beside us were about to do the same thing. Well, we were trying a new place before a play. The backstage pub has reopened and has a new owner. I stopped in over the weekend to check out the pub and was very happy with the changes. New décor and bar. All new tables and stools. It has the industrial look now with exposed wood and gray walls. It has been modernized and the old look has been brought up to date. They have several beers on tap. If you are into the craft beers you will be happy with the selection. I also highly recommend the tea and rum shot. Very tasty! The menu has some spicy twists on the old favorites. A fresh combination of old and new. If you like finger foods you will really enjoy the dip that comes with the fried pickles almost as much as the fried pickles. Great staff, decent beer, average food. I've been to the Backstage Pub a few times, which seems to get its name because of its location somewhat behind the prestigious Proctor's Theatre. A bit off the beaten path, as its on a side street across from the OTB instead of on State Street, the Backstage creates a cozy atmosphere with a bar and dining area on the first floor, and a private room for parties and somesuch on the second floor. They also will show a fair selection of football games over the weekends as well, including the Red Zone Channel. The beer selection is decent, they have some regular brews on tap, as well as some rotating seasonal beers. The food, at least as I found, is average. They serve the standard pub fare and appetizers. I've had an appetizer and sub sampler, which was good, and the wings were good too. I wasn't a big fan of the Philly cheese steak I ordered once, but that won't deter me from ordering other food from the Backstage. See you there! read more

I was in there last night for trivia. Service was okay, and I got the Clam Chowder which was reheated probably from 5 days ago. I was actually having a nice experience when from out of the nowhere the (new) Owner, Casey, started swearing me out. It was late into the night - probably 2AM. Everyone was having a great time. I don't know if he didn't like the way I looked, thought I was someone else, but I did absolutely nothing to prompt the behavior. And he wouldn't stop screaming at me as I walked away from him. I didn't even respond I just stared straight ahead to finish my drink and stared straight ahead at the bar. Trust me I have no personal vendetta, I just wanted to warn people. It was a bit scary for a minute there as I had to walk past this guy giving me menacing looks to get out the door when he kicked me out. Stay far away from this place. There are SO many good places in Schenectady. Do not give these people your business. read more

Went there before a show at Proctor's for dinner. As shown on website and mentioned by other reviews, the menu is limited. The menu available during my visit had a burger, a blt sandwich, and a chicken sandwich. As a result, I expected that the food would be outstanding since the kitchen needed to focus on only a few dishes. I ordered the BLT. When it arrived, the bread was burned, and there was one slice of bacon on each side, the tomato was not even close to ripe, and the lettuce was wilted 'spring mix.' The cost - $12. I showed it to our awesome waitress and she had another sandwich made for me. This one had an appropriate amount of bacon, lettuce and tomato, but the bacon was cooked to the point where it had no flavor. I was hoping this place would become a new 'go to' before a show, but I won't be going back. read more

We're from out of town and visited on Thursday 8/30 for lunch, enjoyed the place so much we went back for dinner. Food was great, drinks and food are very reasonable, and the atmosphere was like an old neighborhood bar. We had a great experience and will visit again someday. We found the owner, Terry, and has staff to be welcoming and and acted as if we were regulars to his bar. If you like good food, drinks, and conversation this is the place. read more

This place is fantastic! There is a limited menu but exceptional in quality, my friends and I frequent this place just for the jalapeno poppers and deviled eggs alone. Bar service is amazing, the bartender is very attentive, takes special care to learn what the customer wants and certainly delivers. This place is a hidden gem. My husband and I were in town overnight and new to this area. We stopped in for an appetizer and drink before going out for he evening. Although the place is small the service was friendly and helpful. We sat at the bar which had a few customs. We ordered potato roses. Omg! So good!! Small bar restaurant downtown with a great crowd and pretty good food! The bar area is very small, but the crowd is mostly local, friendly and fun, so it is a great atmosphere. Going to an 8:00 show at Proctors on a Saturday night. Our reservation was for 5:30 and we were all served way ahead of time for the show; the theater back entrance is about a three minute walk away. And theater parking is right behind the restaurant. It couldn't be more convenient than that. Our initial reservation for a party of 4 turned into 12. And then eight more people unexpectedly joined our group. Backstage P&G staff were able to cheerfully accommodate all of us in the upstairs dining room. We ordered everything from fish and steak to boneless chicken wings, burgers and fried platters. I heard no complaints. My ziti was perfect. New owners Brian and Casey have really taken charge with the Backstage Pub. It is a great place to grab a meal (huge portions at a reasonable price) and a drink (great craft beer lineup on tap, focusing on local breweries). We also found that it's the place where the proctors cast and crews hang out, so there is always a chance to meet a star. These guys are fun and are putting a lot of effort in making the Backstage a place you want on your radar whenever in the area. Keep up the great work. You guys will do awesome. read more

My girls and I have been to the Backstage several times. The food is always awesome portions are large and the staff is always friendly. My youngest loves the food so much that on her birthday she requested that we have the backstage caterer her party. My 100% Italian father actually asked for seconds of ziti you can not get a better compliment than that!!! So I would highly recommend them and I will definitely be using them again. Went there sat night w friends before a play at proctors...had a 5pm reservation and alls we got was rushed...not only that, but we couldn't order appetizers and could only order certain things...every 5 min we got asked if we were done and ready for the check...if we knew that this was gonna be so awful we would've went somewhere else for dinner that was more relaxing...very terrible service...not recommended. :( read more

So we walked in & sat at empty seats at bar (4 ladies) no one came over or acknowledged us. Finally the male behind the bar pointed at us & the girl behind the bar said" I'm too busy for them". We waited a few more minutes & she came over & said "I can't accommodate you right now". We told her we just wanted a drink & she said (with attitude) "you'll have to wait". We said we would go somewhere else & she said " no big deal" I bet the owner would think it was a big deal! As we left the other patrons looked a little shocked at her behavior. Disappointed. Cheese and ale soup was the consistency of water and barely warm. Expected a nice creamy soup, instead it was loaded with slightly undercooked potatoes, celery and bacon. Bacon that was crisp would have been a nice garnish on a proper cheese soup. This was a fail. You have to try to mess up a Caesar salad, but they did. Romaine should have been lightly dressed by tossing it with dressing in a bowl, rather it was tossed in the bowl and the dressing was likely squirted randomly on the greens. Not sure what the upcharge was for steak on the salad, it was tough and the bits scraped from the grill were not a pleasant addition. Croutons were stale and negligible. No desire to return. Server was pleasant or there wouldn't even be one star. read more

Wish I could give a negative rating. Food was terrible and the service was worse. Caught the waitress gossiping about us to the kitchen TWICE and they refused to honor our coupon unless we paid cash. She also was not happy in general we were using a coupon and kept referencing it must be nice to get a free meal. I filed a complaint with the manager, the company that issued the coupon and our local newspaper. Also had an issue that waitress chose to turn TV to a Dateline-type show focusing on a man's murder.
