    Classic burger and fries
    Jen P.

Order at the bar. The fried pickles were divine. I can't believe we left some behind. They were thinly breaded, crisp and had a great dill flavor. The sauce was also good. The burger was okay. The bun was hard so I threw it away. Ate just the burger and fixings. It was okay - a bit dry. The fries were good but just a tad too much seasoning. This place is tucked away. I will give it another try because the pickles gave me hope.

This was our second visit to Backspace Bar & Kitchen and it will not be our last. We usually visit New Orleans 3-4 times a year and rarely repeat spots because there's just too much to try, but this place made the cut again! From the outside, it just looks like a small bar-you might not expect the level of quality that comes out of the kitchen, but wow, do they deliver! The brussel sprouts are an absolute must: tender on the inside, crispy on the outside with a hot honey glaze that hits all the right notes. The jalepeno poppers: creamy, crispy and full of flavor. We also loved the Chicken Bacon Swiss: perfectly cooked and seriously satisfying. Add is some unbeatable drink specials ($2PBR!), and this spot is everything you want in a casual, delicious, budget friendly meal. Service was great. We went at an odd time of time, so we were the only customers, but the bartender was happy to help and our food came out super fast Backspace is a gem. If you are in the French Quarter, don't miss it. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Popcorn Chicken - delicious, good portion. Spicy honey glaze was so good.

Found this place looking at Yelp reviews. We had just arrived in town and our group was looking for a quick snack and drinks. Backspace Bar was a perfect spot, they had friendly bartenders, TV's with sports on, bar seating plus some tables with comfortable chairs, good mixed drinks, tasty popcorn chicken and local beer. My wife and I visited a second time because it was a safe pick for a snack that wasn't overly crowded. Eats wise we shared: Brussel Sprouts - sprouts tossed with pickled jalapenos & spicy honey glaze. Home run, I'm not a fan of sprouts, but they had a nice char, the honey glaze was delicious and the pickled jalapenos gave a sweet and slight bite everything. Boudin Balls - deep fried pork & rice balls served with remoulade. Solid little app with good flavor. The remoulade sauce was great for dipping. Popcorn Chicken - fried chicken thigh with BBQ, buffalo, cajun dry rub, ranch or spicy honey glaze. We had them twice with buffalo and spicy honey glaze. I was all in on the honey glaze dip. It was delicious and the chicken portions were nice and tender. Their fries were kind of soggy and forgettable. I had a couple of local brews from Second Line brewing and Gnarly Barley. No taps here all bottles of cans. My wife enjoyed the Hibiscus Margarita and an espresso martini. The vibe was low key, a bit dark in the back, but a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The bar scene is obviously extremely crowded and can be overwhelming, but we felt comfortable here. This place reminded me a lot of smaller craft beer bars in Philly. Thanks guys!!

Small place with table seating and bar seating. We popped in around 4:30 on a Friday and there was a decent crowd. Seemed like it was just the one bartender working. All orders are placed at the bar. Got the fried pickles and a spicy chicken sandwich. Food did take a little bit to come out, which was surprising as most people there were just drinking (not eating). The fried pickles were great, perfect amount of batter and not 5000 degrees when they came out. The chicken sandwich was also good, I just wish it had a smidge more sauce to it. It was not very spicy either - which was nice. Overall, food was good. Prices were decent for French quarter. Service was fine. I would say don't come in here expecting to be blown away by the frills. It's a bar.

I was so happy to see that this bar survived the pandemic. I've always loved it's quasi hunting lodge feel and incredible drinks. It's definitely not on one of the busier streets and it's closer to Canal than Esplanade so it's easy to slide in and get a seat at the bar. I love their Blue Hawaiian and Espresso Martinis. We also had some pulled pork loaded fries which were a nice twist on Poutine. The bartender was super friendly and quick with the drinks. I kid you not when I say a burger is $11! I live in Milwaukee, where you're lucky to find a burger under $15 these days.

Great place for burgers and drinks! We were looking for a burger place nearby and happened upon the Backspace bar. Great service and delicious food. The food was outstanding and very large portions. Hidden gem!!

Great hole in the wall in the French Quarter. Had the shrimp po boy and bacon cheese fries. They both hit the spot!

We had a lovely lunch here. It's a dive bar feel with a really solid burger and fries! The burger has a wad of brie and it's just amazing. The food came out quickly and the bartender chatted my husband up about the music scene and it was a nice spot to be during a quiet rainy Monday after the aquarium. I recommend splitting the fries and getting the burger!

Such a cool little nook and just close enough to our hotel but also just outside the hub of tourist traps. The atmosphere is dark and pubby, cozy, and different. The burger was one of the best I've had in town, and their Brussels sprouts were a great burger side dish. I try to avoid the Quarter when in town, but when I'm ever staying close by there again I will definitely be back for another burger and quiet spot to chill.

$15 burger. Gross fries threw them back

We got there just before 12pm, it opens at 11am and only waited about 15 minutes before spots opened up. It seems a lot of people come right at 11am. So by 12pm many people were grabbing their checks and heading out. The bar is really nice and even if you can't sit on the carousel, the bar area is nice too! The bartenders are super nice and friendly. Great customer service and everyone we sat next to was friendly and welcoming. The drinks aren't the best per say but you go for the atmosphere.

Atmosphere/Appearance: It's EXTREMELY BUSY and very loud in here. Lol. As mentioned above, the bar is located inside the hotel so once you walk in through the front door you enter the lobby then head to the right. It's a first-come, first-serve situation (at least it was for us at the time). So of course, the carousel bar is the highlight. It's a slow rotating bar rail and it's adorable. Lol. Almost the entire bar is eyeing any available spots so you have to be quick, but be respectful. However, there are tables and such sprinkled throughout the bar where you can hangout at as you stalk the actual carousel. My wife and I sat in the window which made for some excellent people watching. Lol. Eventually after what felt like an hour or we did spot some spots on the carousel, my wife held them for me as I closed the check then finally got to sit... and SPIN! The bar completes a full revolution every 15 minutes so you definitely won't get dizzy. Service: We had no issues here whatsoever. The staff is just super busy all over the place, but they didn't miss a beat. Food: For my first drink I checked out their Oaxacan Midnight which was like a tequila play on the Old Fashioned. It was delicious, a bit lighter than an Old Fashioned, but certainly stood on it's own. For our first appetizer bar bite we tried the Blue Crab & Corn Beignet which didn't come out as I was expecting. Lol. I'm not mad, I just pictured the big, fluffy things from Cafe Du Monde, but maybe stuffed with goodies! These were more like fritter than I absolutely loved so much I ordered a 2nd plate. Lastly we tried the BBQ Shrimp which was grilled to perfection with a good snap, excellent flavor and good char along with a tangy, cream sauce on top. Value: It's pricey. Food and drinks were decent, but a SMIDGE overpriced, but... they know you're going to pay because you're on vacation, you're a tourist and you wanna be in this novelty bar. Lol. Regardless, I had a blast and you can say you did too whenever you check this place out! In conclusion, I've now been there, done that. Lol. I don't have to do it again, but if you're in the area, check this place out. It's a good time.

Before I start, this is my review based on my experience. I've noticed some people complain about…read morethe music, paying the cover charge, seating or the size of the venue. I'm not here to argue any of those points. I will say this: expecting live musicians to perform for free until you decide whether they're worth paying is ridiculous. The cover is usually only $5...$10 max. If that's a dealbreaker, this probably isn't your place. Stay home and stream Spotify. Now... I have some friends in town, and whenever that happens, a Monday night trip to the Spotted Cat is basically mandatory. I've been coming here for years and years. Yes, it's super touristy now, but it still gives me the warm fuzzies every time I walk through those doors. So I'm presenting the "compliment sandwich" review. Never heard of it? You start with a compliment, slip in some constructive-ish criticism, then end with another compliment. Supposedly people receive feedback better that way. Let's see. First, the music. Outstanding. Chris Christy wasn't what I thought I wanted to hear until I actually heard him. I felt completely transported. Man, can that guy play the guitar. It felt kinda like gypsy music. Then came the Frenchmen Street Allstars. The last time I saw them, they had a different lead singer and, honestly, they kind of felt like a completely different band, aside from the phenomenal drummer. This version did not disappoint. It was a great mix of jazz and New Orleans standards. Both bands were great! **Now a note to management.** Great music isn't enough. The bar should be every bit as memorable as the stage. Forgive me, I didn't get the bartenders' names, so I have to describe them by physical traits. The first bartender, the guy with the mountain of curly hair, was friendly enough and made decent drinks. Later, another bartender with a short haircut took over and made the best drinks of the night. Then there was the bartender with the black and hot pink hair. She looked like she'd rather be anywhere else. She rarely smiled, her demeanor felt unwelcoming, and it almost came across as hostile. On top of that, the drinks she made were so weak I genuinely wondered if there was any alcohol in them. Seriously. They were that bad. Here's my philosophy: if you're going to be grumpy, aloof, or have some other off-putting trait, you'd better make a mean drink. Years and years ago there was a bartender named Curtis who wasn't exactly sunshine and rainbows, but that man could make a cocktail. I didn't need him to smile because the drink did all the talking. If the drink is mostly soda, though, friendliness becomes a lot more important. Unfriendly and bad bartending is a double whammy. She must be somebody's child or partner because I can't think of any other reason to employ a bad bartender. I hate to belabor the point, but the drinks aren't cheap. Cheap and bad I can take. For another comparison, there's another bartender there, I'm pretty sure her name is Chris. She's been there for years. She's all business. Maybe a little surly. Who am I kidding? A lot surly. But she's a character. More importantly, she makes a great drink. That's the kind of personality that somehow fits the Spotted Cat perfectly. Now let me end with the final piece of "bread" on my compliment sandwich. The doorman deserves his own review. That gravelly-voiced "Welcome to the Spotted Cat!" is part of the experience. Then he absolutely hammers that stamp onto your wrist. Somehow you don't even mind because you know what's waiting on the other side: incredible music, a fun room, and one of the best nights you can have on Frenchmen Street. Just don't let the bartender with the pink and black hair make your drink.

While the Sazerac wasn't invented here, this is arguably its most iconic home, a place where New Orleans cocktail history comes to life. I would use this version as your gold standard when dining out in New Orleans and looking for a perfect Sazerac. We enjoyed watching bartender Rachel craft each drink. Rye whiskey, Peychaud's Bitters, and sugar are stirred in a small pitcher with ice. The serving glass is chilled, then emptied, and finished with an absinthe rinse along the rim. The cocktail is strained into the glass and topped with a lemon peel. The atmosphere makes the experience even better. The murals, the history, and the energy of the room give it a sense of occasion that you do not get at most bars.
