I came in with Two friends on a busy Saturday (6 July 24) on an unexpected trip to help SAR in the nearby Brainard Lake area... anyway, we stumbled in for beers to relax from a stressful day and we all tried the wings. The food was amazing. Service was very polite even when we changed our order 2x and we weren't really ready when we got to the register so I'm sure that was frustrating to the bartender but he never let on and the beers were poured immediately with maybe 15 minutes wait for wings... the best damn wings yall!! I am kind of sad to say, supposedly this place recently sold. It's been a staple in Ned for over 20 yrs, and been a home to many of Ned's local sports watching crowd. Always a good beer selection. Food is decent and fairly consistent. Like most, they have struggled with staffing. Once in a while -- a not so good employee emerges, but typically they're all pretty great. If they are indeed closing shop, I hope they move to another location in Ned. I am going to miss my boots of Hofbräu watching the sun set and so are a lot of other people. :-) read more

Similar to "Island Time," when it's busy with tourists, expect to wait. If you're in a hurry, ask the wait time before you place an order. Order food at the bar (to the side), leave the kitchen alone. There are other options in town but they're expensive, if you want a good time and hang out with locals, you can't beat it. The atmosphere changes when it gets dark. During the day it's family friendly. Pizza is pretty solid. The one-star reviews are pretty comical. Updating my review after our 6th attempt (or maybe 7th since COVID-19 restrictions) to grab what used to be a quick, fun beer and a snack was squashed, once again during posted open hours, with the door open and "open" sign lit up. Our familiar bartender greeted us genially to then promptly announce they had no food to sell and were closing in 20 min anyway, plus there's nowhere to sit. Since COVID-19, our Nederland dining options have remained fairly scant, and we've been grateful supporters of places like Salto, Crosscut, Tres Gringos, and Busey Brews who are reliably operational during open hours. We have tried to support Backcountry too many times only to be disappointed by no response or nothing to serve. Happy to spend my local dollars elsewhere. read more

I wish I could give the food a 5 outta 5 but the service a 2 outta 5. LET IT BE KNOWN Backcuntry has hired a new cashier/bartender as of October 10th 2020. THAT being said, the service has GREATLY improved. I still must rate 2 outta 5 because of the absolutely enraging experiences I've had here. Most times I call to place a to-go order, the phone is literally hanging off the line, and I get a busy signal. To clarify, I've been to Backcuntry's bar after an attempted phone order to try and order in-person, but they do actually take the phone off the hook to avoid phone orders after 6 pm. Of course, Backcuntry closes at 7pm now (I really wish they would stay open later but what can I do) so you must be nimble, swift and prudent when ordering. THEY WILL REFUSE ORDERS WITHIN AN HOUR OF CLOSING, to a claimed "really high volume of orders". So if you order before 6pm you SHOULD be okay. I often order my Damn Good wings at 3 or 4 to ensure I actually get the order, only to eat at 8 or 9 pm. The wings surprisingly cook well in the microwave. The place is usually packed with locals, who the server/bartender seem to notice and serve first. Don't expect to "just pop by for a quick beer". The locals always seem to have some lengthy (and mostly insignificant) gossip to exchange with the bartender. Although I have not seen this with the newer and more efficient bartender, but be prepared to stand in a long line (or just a long wait) regardless. On to the food, it's absolutely fabulous. Best wings in Nederland hands down. Pizza's not bad either, and very affordable compared to Cross-Cut. the beer selection is exactly what you would expect in Nederland, which is glorious and diverse. Basically the only, but very important downside to Backcuntry is the inconsistent, spotty service. Even if you're fiending for some excellent wings, they're never guaranteed. I recommend Backcuntry, but make damn sure you're ahead of the "rush" which in my opinion, is just a regular rate of orders, not an actual rush as experienced by many restaurants in Boulder. The owner really needs to address the staff issues. Maybe hire one or two more servers/bartenders? I find myself constantly waiting for the bartender to take people's drink order's who have just sat down, as I (who has been waiting in line for sometimes upwards of 10 to 15 minutes to simply pick up an order) wait for the bartender to finally ask if I have been helped. If I owned a small-town restaurant in the time of COVID-19, I would make damn sure that there is at least one employee working specifically the pick-up line, especially during these so-called (largely employee caused) lines, which are usually un-managed mobs! Overall, if you can manage to visit Backcuntry at a time where the staff isn't busy, you can USUALLY count on an excellent dining and drinking experience, but if there's more than about 10 people in the restaurant when you enter, I'd recommend turning around and trying Busey Brews or even the local supermarket. I should have gone to Crosscut Pizzeria. They have more stars than this crappy place. Rude af. One guy in particular. Looks grungy and has a beard and mustache with graying hair. Maybe that's his problem..he is pissed off at the world because he is a middle aged man working in a pizza joint. I asked if the other half of my order was coming soon after waiting over 10 min after they delivered the first half of my order. Food was getting cold so I asked a simple eff-ing question to which this rude MF answered with "we'll let you know when it is ready". I stood there and watched them put a small pizza in the oven so I asked another simple question: "is that my pizza that just went in?" to which the same rude middle aged MF said the same thing to me but louder and ruder. I didn't ask to be notified when my food is ready. I asked if that was my pizza. Just answer the fucking question. Perhaps this man is stupid and can't answer simple questions like the ones I asked. This would explain why he is working in a pizza joint. I gave my food, which was getting cold, to my daughter because she was so hungry. I did not eat. Pizza comes out 44 minutes after I placed my order. No apology for the wait. No explanation for the wait. Just crappy service. I asked for a to go box which he did not acknowledge my request and walked away. When he went back to the kitchen he grabbed a box and placed it on the counter behind me and said "to go box" and walked away. I always support mom and pop shops/independently owned places over chains, but this place does not care about their customers. This man single handedly ruined my mood. I can't believe I paid over $40 for someone to treat me like shit. I regret tipping before I received anything. Aside from shitty service, the restrooms are ridiculously dirty. I went to wash my hands and didn't close the door because I didn't want to touch the doorknob in fear of contracting an incurable sexually transmitted disease. Carpet in the eating area is stained. Ketchup pump has dried ketchup all over it. Sodas dispense very fizzy but still tastes flat. And they play very ratchet music. Atmosphere 0 stars; Service 0 stars; Cleanliness 0 stars; Value 0 stars; Food 0 stars (food might have been okay but anywhere with such horrible service will taste bad no matter what). Maybe I am just used to the southern hospitality we have back home in Texas. But not being a dick should be a requirement for everyone, everywhere. The Bad: Kinda old-school and not that clean. The fries are definitely not homemade. Service and food can be inconsistent. Weird open layout with not many seating options. Absolutely great "hole in the wall" type of place. After a long day of hiking, great service with great beer selection. As far as we could tell nothing coming from a frozen bag, tenders were hand breaded and fried, pizza toppings extremely fresh an just delicious pizza overall. Reasonable price for how much food we got. I read several very negative reviews on yelp before this and I am not sure how that happened as we have had a great experience. IF I COULD LEAVE ZERO STARS I WOULD, I been coming here since i moved to Denver 5 years ago! Service has always been shotty but the foods good and the staffs never been nasty- UNTIL my last visit! I brought my husband and my son in for a nice dinner and we needed a table to seat 3 (there are 2) both were dirty, i walked up to the bartender ON DUTY (not the bartender sitting drinking a beer on her OFF TIME) and asked her if i could get assistance in cleaning one of the bigger tables to seat my family and i for dinner.. she hesitated in replying and when she did she said shed get it done, I walked back to the table and started cleaning it MYSELF as her friend who was there hanging when i asked for help getting a table cleaned RUDELY stated he'd "clean the damn table'' !!!!!! I was absolutely shocked, i couldnt believe the bartender wouldnt have stepped up - it should never be a problem to clean a table!! As a matter of fact, they NEED to start paying MORE attention to other things than just whose sitting at the bar! Ive been taking the hour drive up for the shotty service for so long, but after that last visit, i walked out as she cleaned the table and went to Cross Cut pizza- absolutely disappointing i had to, but i am thankful i did. Being a Steelers fan I was very happy to see the bartender Jessica wearing a Steelers jersey. I felt right at home. Staff was super friendly and we enjoyed talking with the other customers.
