I came here because a colleague recommended them. I fully believed I needed, at minimum, new front brake & a battery. I called & Alex answered. He was extremely nice & the prices more than reasonable. I made the appointment & headed in. The waiting area/check-in/out is nice & comfy & does not have the usual grease/oil/mechanic smell. Come on, you know exactly what I'm talking about. A couple hours later, I received a call telling me that I didn't need front OR rear brakes & my battery was fine. I asked if he was sure because I had 3 different places tell me I needed the brakes & there was very little left. Like 2mm or something. No, I had 60-70% on front brakes & 50% on rear brakes. Battery is fine. They checked something else brake related for me & said everything looks good. I'm stunned I didn't need anything. But I'm also exceptionally grateful not to have been taken advantage of. The diagnostic for everything was far less than I was expecting but I felt relieved & grateful. Grateful that there are still honest people who will not take advantage of a customer simply because that customer is a woman. The customer service was okay, Jordan was kind however the actual vehicle service was the worst I have had so far. My car wasn't starting correctly and I also wanted the brakes to be checked. I dropped my jeep off to be serviced they kept it over night and worked on it the next day. They claimed the next day that absolutely nothing was wrong with it although it was still not starting. When I inquired about the brakes there was nothing in the notes but Jordan went to ask - the mechanic said "they were all good" (they squeak) all-in-all I paid $99 for there to be zero resolution on both of my issues. I was hoping this would be my new mechanic since it is nearby. I want to ensure anyone who comes here knows that this will probably be the case for them too. I am going to go to the dealership because my experience with Back To Basics Automotive has scared me away from local auto businesses. Since March 11, 2021 We had our van assessed for a road trip from Illinois to Arizona. 1st by LONGS GARAGE IN URBANA IL $ $2,213. 84 was spent mainly to get the AC Fixed since we were going to Az & that was the main reason we took the van in. That AC repair failed according to the office manager the main line vibrated loose... doesn't sound right. Got right inside the Arizona State line no AC!!!! Next shop, was HEATH's Auto Flagstaff, Az, left Flagstaff arrived in Phoenix Az NO AC again!!! Luckily Heath's had a warranty and we filed not 1 Claim but 2!!! Onto Back to Basics who honored the warranty claim which we were grateful for & they have always been responsive & getting us in & very courteous! They seem to know cars inside and out! However, we have had our van into the shop multiple times for A.C. Repair and still have no A.C. They know there is a leak but unable to track the leak and fix it! On the last visit my husband & I were both told by one of the younger guys hey we are chasing a leak, can't find it so just come back and we'll put refrigerant in free of charge, great I thought ! About 1 week later we realized once again, NO AC!!! Bummed! Our car has been in and out of this shop and 2 others On a average our Van has been in a shop every other week since Leaving Illinois!!! Eventually the entire AC system has been rebuilt!!!! My calculations add up to $5,021.48 and the AC problem has NOT BEEN DETECTED!!! What are 2 seniors to do? My husband is almost 70 a Disabled Veteran, I am a 60 yr old Diabetic. As you can imagine we are new to the Valley of the Sun and not tolerable if the heat. We have many upcoming dr appts and it's getting hotter even with making early appts. It's becoming a concern. Also, praying he is a candidate for knee replacement surgery soon. I had a saub couldn't find parts for it everyone said it would take months they would have to import everything. Kevin instead of paying thousands to import parts he rebuilt the part. That shows integrity which is hard to find. I would refer them any and every day of the week. As a women it's hard to know who to trust. Hands down, the BEST mechanics in Arizona. I took my 73 Nova to Back to Basic last September for some restoration work. By "some restoration work," I mean that my car was ready for the junk yard. Let's see if I can paint this picture correctly. My car had been sitting for 10 years, untouched. Despite having a lot of work done before parking it for a decade, everything with my car needed to be restored. Every seal, gasket and rubber hose or fitting was dry rotted. The motor, transmission, gas tank and brakes were all leaking fluid and no component was even close to being operational. I can't even begin to describe the deplorable condition of my most prized possession and it pains me to think of my classic car in such a condition. My dilemma was that I was moving to Germany for work and wanted to take my car with me. The Germans have VERY strict inspections before a vehicle can be given a license plate and my classic beauty was a Frankenstein on wheels. I had 3 months to get my car inspection ready and the mechanics at Back to Basic Automotive tackled the job and completed it within my accelerated timetable. Upon calling the shop, I received the disclaimer that they were not a classic car restoration shop but a general mechanic shop. Despite not specializing in classic cars, they promised to do their best, and their best is what I received. I had my car towed to the shop and they immediately began working on it. They tore my car apart and like expert detectives, solved many mysteries that had been surrounding my vehicle since I bought it. Such as, "why does the front end sit so low?" "Oh, because the car used to have a lighter V6 motor and when the previous owner put in the heavier V8, he never changed out the smaller coil springs." The mechanics got my brakes working first, and then started replacing everything that was dry rotted, cracked or broken. They replaced the radiator, heater core, heater blower motor, repaired my gas tank, replaced my distributor, rewired my entire car from front to rear, and changed out my transmission for a larger and better 700R4. This is just a few of the projects they completed and they did it in record time, for a very reasonable price. I primarily dealt with Andrew in the front office and Trevor was the lead mechanic working on my Nova. These two mechanics were without a doubt the most personable, professional, and skilled mechanics that I have ever met. They even emailed me to ensure that the Nova arrived in Germany and to make sure it passed the 15 page inspection. I can't stress enough that this is the only shop that I recommend to my friends and family still living in Arizona. They will continue to have my business when I return from Germany and I hope they continue to thrive in Phoenix. If this is the normal way that they treat customers and the normal pride that they put into their work, then I have no doubt that their business will continue to thrive. This shop is awesome. My daughter is attending school at ASU and her A/C went out. Pep Boys said her compressor went out and would be nearly $3k to fix. She has a 2004 VW beetle and didn't think the car was even worth that much. We looked on Yelp and found Back to Basic Automotive and were encouraged by the great reviews. My husband called and explained our situation. They got her in the same day and out the door for less than $1,000! Also good to know, her compressor was fine. Shame on you Pep Boys!! She's coming home for the summer and I called to see if they could check her fluids and tire pressure before making the drive. I can't say enough good things about Back to Basics. They are honest, straight forward, and have never tried to upsell me on anything unnecessary. I have been through 3 different mechanics in 3 years that not only treated me poorly but have tried to sell me hundreds of dollars of services that I didn't need. I cannot stand how unprofessional this industry can be. I found Back to Basics on Yelp and have not and will not look back. I have brought in 3 different cars. Including a car I bought at auction and they charged me the initial service to get it through emissions. My car did not pass the first time, instead of charging me again to diagnose the car Back to Basics kept the car another day spent the day inspecting what went wrong, and they drove it to the emissions center for me and got it passed. All without charging me extra but the original service. I have brought in my wife's car, my old and newer car. I went to Jiffy Lube for Oil changes before but they have convinced me to take care of everything in my car. I have referred at least 5-10 people here and wont stop singing their Praises. Having to go out of town on short notice, I needed to get an oil change in addition to addressing an intermittant clacking sound coming from underneath my car. Based on the reviews from Yelpers about this place, I thought I'd give this place a try. Although they were busy during that entire week they said if I didn't mind waiting for a couple of hours they could fit me in the next day. So I made an appointment and came prepared to wait, However, after checking in, one of the guys asked me where I worked . When I told him he said he was heading that way anyway and would be happy to give me a lift so I wouldn't have to wait. (They usually don't give rides and he didn't have to do this.) When I picked up my car, Kevin explained to me what the clattering sound was (plastic clips holding the front hubcap on )- and assured me it was more of an annoyance than anything else. He readjusted them for free . Gave me a cost estimate if I wanted to replace them in the future. (FYI- they have not 'clattered' since he adjusted them.) He also discovered a couple of other small and inexpensive things that needed immediate replacement and took care of it on the spot. When Kevin showed me the bill I was very pleasantly surprised. These guys are experienced mechanics and know their stuff. - They don't pressure you into getting other things done that you don't need or could wait on if you can't afford it right away. They explain things clearly and are respectful and courteous. Best of all their prices are very reasonable. Because they work hard to develop trust with their customers (they defintiely have earned mine), I will continue going to this shop for all of my auto repair needs/ routine maintenance.
