This is a true staple of my childhood, and of the Bay Area. Anyone who knows good food and good…read morepizza in the East Bay knows Arizmendi. It's a surprise every day, which pizza they'll make, but it's guaranteed to always be good. The quality of the ingredients is top notch, the kind you can just taste. Even their salads, soups, and baked goods are delicious, it tastes like a quality bakery, for a place that's known for great pizza. This is definitely an if you know, you know spot, the kind you'll come back to for years on end for its consistency, its flavor, its heart. It's a staple of the East Bay for a reason, and even if you're not a vegetarian, you will adore it.

Great spot for a quick dinner at an affordable price!…read more My partner and I stopped by Arizmendi to check it out and get a daily special on a Sunday. In total, we paid $7.50, which was not bad at all! The space is spacious inside with an ample parking lot, but I would say this is more of a grab-and-go place; there is some outdoor seating. We got a pizza with tomato, olive oil, feta, and olives. The service was quick, straightforward, and we were able to get our slices within 5 minutes and it came out hot which was great! The pizza itself is on the thinner side and has a good ratio of dough to cheese. The crust/base was chewy and light and did in fact, taste healthy (in a good way)! Do I think this place is somewhere you must go to try out? Honestly, no, it is a good value pizza that tastes delicious, but I would say to only stop in if you are around the area.

Matcha Tales, Always looking to enjoy the food/drink…read moreexperience. We found a gem. Took a minute to prepare, but I am willing to sacrifice time for taste . Worked out great. All I heard was this is the best Matcha ever. Wow. Let's memorize this. Well deserved. See you

I waxed nostalgic today. When I recently learned Simurgh Bakery & Cafe was a close bicycle ride…read moreaway, I had to make a visit. Ma sha' Allah! Owner Hatice Yildiz was delighted that (although my Türkçe was quite broken) a citizen from this country could speak her native tongue. She was thoughtful about taking a few minutes to indulge me so I could practice. So touched! Aside: It has been my experience those of the Türkish persuasion are always delighted and generous with the complements (that I don't think I deserve) when a non-native tries to speak their language. I was a USAF military brat during the Cold War, I was privileged to live in Izmir, Türkiye for three years as a child. Ja, we had a daily Türkish language and history class at my grade school. I did not arrive at the best hour, because it was quite busy. HOWEVER, I will say, considering how busy it was, not only was my order was prepared in a reasonable amount of time, the customer service was spot on. As someone who has worked in the front/back of the house at restaurants, Hatice has a well-oiled machine! Next to Lamb Börek, Spinach Börek and Sütlaç (Rice Pudding), Lahmacun (super thin crust Turkish Pizza) is one of my all time favorite Türkish street food. Simurgh's use recipe uses beef, but I prefer lamb--understandably the latter is more expensive. The bread thickness was on point, but I would have preferred it not have baked so long and softer for the roll-up. However, it takes a deft hand to get this pastry to the right thickness and texture. I would have liked A LOT more garlic, onion, coriander, cumin, parsley and red pepper paste spiciness in the beef. But the pickled red onion with Sumac was a really nice touch, and the micro-greens were super fresh. The traditional finishing touch lemon wedges were on the side. When I have traveled back to Türkiye, I have visited The Tatlises store chain for my Lahmacun 'feast'. Last time I had Tatlises Lahmacun was in Antalya in 2003; it was prepared more spicy with lamb, and is served with fresh cilantro/coriander, mint, salata (salad), thinly slice raw onion and a fresh lemon wedge to finish. I will be back to issue the Börek and Sultaç a lap.

I bought 4 items here 1. The Pain de mie sandwich loaf. Pain…read morede mei is French (flour.& yeast). It is called white sandwich loaf in UK & Pullman loaf in the East Coast. West coast you can only find it in Andersen Bakery. Sang Kee has it but it is way, way subpar. The one I bought here is (water roux)- the Hong Kong version which is different from the traditional French version at Andersen Bakery. They are equally good quality 2. The Portuguese Custer tart is authentic. But I prefer the one from our Chinese Bakery in San Leandro. They have the Portuguese pie crust with the English custard which is less sweet. ****A warning to American born, you might want to stick to the version here @ Napoleon because the modify version might be totally tasteless to you **** 3. The Chinese tamale. This is best so far. It has LEAN Chinese sausage, LEAN pork & egg yolk. I hope someday they will include a few dry shrimps in it. Totally tasteful WITHOUT MSG. It brings me back to the pre 2010 authenticate Chinese cooking. GOOD JOB guys & keep it up 4. The moon cake. Not as sweet as the commercial one. I want to buy 3 boxes. The red bean paste with egg yolk, the lotus paste & the mixed nut. But I only have $40 that I just got from the bank. I know Chinatown takes cash because it is non traceable. I have such wishful thinking that they might have charge service to accommodate customers who bought over $40. I ended up just buying one tamale & one moon cake.

This is my go to bakery in Oakland Chinatown! I've worked in Oakland for almost ten years now and…read moretried multiple bakeries in Chinatown and I just keep going back to this one. The Dan tats (egg tarts) are always on point and have every sort of pineapple bun available. There is a sort of system that you do have to do your best to follow when you're there. Usually there is a single file line out the door. Please don't try to cut or people will give you the ugly side eye. Once you reach inside, you need to do your best to scan the option because once you're called up, there's not much time to browse. The good thing is that if you don't know what's available - you can always point to the egg tarts (always top shelf) and pineapple buns (always in the far left display case). Once you've come a few times, you can have a general idea what's available and don't even need to browse the case anymore :) During autumn moon festival season (fall) they always have the most impressive display of beautiful moon cakes available with 0-3 yolk options and a multitude of fillings. The basic classic ones are lotus, but if that's too unfamiliar - go with all the familiar easy options. They are all amazing. And they have since increased their "if you don't make it to $10" box prices to $1. So really, just buy all the Dan tats to make it just over the $10 mark so you don't have to carry all your pastries in a plastic bag. Oh and no more than 5 pennies at a time. Rules and signs exist for a reason.
