Que Hall and Oats....How does it Feel to be Back? I haven't worked in Richmond since 2015 so it has been that long since I was in this delightful little place! We had a pretty sunny day and I felt confident in finding a parking spot in downtown Richmond! I scored a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant and I was excited to be there. It was 12:30 pm and I was expecting a crowd, back in the day there would have been a line and folks jockey for tables. But I walked right up to order and I didn't see a menu - so I just told the gentleman at the counter I wanted hummus and falafel and hoped for the best. I was not disappointed! I got a l lovely plate of smooth garlicy hummus, with pickles, tomatoes and Kalama olives as garnish. Three warm, crunchy on the outside light and flaky on the inside falafel, warm peta and my own little tub of their homemade tzatziki sauce. My service was fast and friendly. This is a total dive and typical of places I love: local, unique, quaint, tons of character, and good food served from friendly folks. It's not fancy at all (feels very "mom and pop") and has just a few tables, food served on paper products, but it seems authentically Greek but pretty basic: hummus, gyros, salad, shawarma, falafel, and baklava. The pita was very nice. The hummus was plentiful but very lemony served with pickles and olives....too one-note for a full plate. This is what Greek cuisine is supposed to taste like! Babylon is located in downtown Richmond near the corner of Second and Main Streets. I was set to meet some colleagues here for lunch. They canceled at the last minute and I decided that I was going to go ahead and go anyway. Since it was right in the middle of lunch time, I opted to park a little further away and walk in. The cafe has a small storefront presence. Customers are urged to walk up to the counter to place and pay for their orders, then wait while their food is being served. It was particularly busy; the cashier was busy prepping a couple of orders while a few plates were sitting atop a cooler behind the register. I hope they weren't getting cold. The cashier apologized and promptly rang up my order. I had the gyro lunch plate which came with rice and salad and a bottled drink. The cashier brought my food and a large squirt bottle of tzatziki. The gyro came piled high with gyro meat, tomatoes, and red onion. If you can't easily close a gyro in one hand, it means that they piled it right! The gyro meat was a bit dry but still had great spice and flavor. I would have appreciated a bit of a thinner consistency on the tzatziki. Though it tasted plenty fine too, it squeezed out like mayo so it was difficult to get it through the veggies. The salad was standard issue: lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, peperoncini, kalamata olives, topped with balsamic vinaigrette. The rice was a bit bland. I couldn't taste the saffron in it and it seemed a bit limp and overcooked by comparison. My only complaint (beyond the rice) was that the place could use a good cleaning and brightening up. The main room is poorly lit and the service area around the counter seems a bit grimy on inspection. Although the second room let in a little more natural light, my tabletop was a bit sticky to the touch. I could tolerate it, but other patrons may be more squicked out. Nonetheless, the gyro is worth the price of the platter alone. After a disappointing experience at a nearby Mediterranean restaurant, I have a place to go to if I'm craving gyros. Despite how busy it was, the staff were courteous and welcoming. Just don't cancel on me last minute, ok? read more

Service was fast and the food..the food was delicious. I had the gyro salad and it was divine. The gyro meat has crispy edges and was tender inside.
