After trying out various bbq places like Pecan Lodge and Terry Black, I would put Baby Back Shak on #3. I went to different restaurants everyday for two weeks and this place is among the top. I thought the prices here is a bargain, they give you huge amount of food. They gave too much bread as well. I like their briskets but wasn't a big fan of their sausage. Wow I love Baby Back Shak! And I know I'm not the only one either. Especially if there is a line formed to get in before they even open!!! My favs here are brisket, pork ribs, andouille sausage, and turkey. The sides are also exquisite. I can't get enough of the coleslaw, corn and beans. The beans look to be some sort of chili, that is sweet. I could probably eat that by the gallon to be honest. Just load it up, drink/chew it. For the drinks I just go with the lemonade which is always great. Lastly the a BBQ sauce here is where it's at. It has the perfect ratio of awesome sauce excellence. As for ambience, this is a cool place to eat and chill. Love seeing the bbq articles on the walls, and artwork. You know those hole in a wall-like places that people rave about? If you're just south of 30, Baby Back Shak is that place! Service is solid; food arrives quickly (even with a line out the door). Everything I had--brisket, sausage, coleslaw, potato salad--was on point! I especially appreciated the layers of flavor in the sides; they didn't phone it in here. If you like your sauce, just know most plates only come with a small, condiment size amount of BBQ sauce. Had I know that I would have asked for at least one more. Based on Yelpers, this is one of those venues that appear to divide patrons (mostly 5 or 1 star reviews). As one who doesn't often gravitate towards BBQ restaurants when I travel, I'd easily put Baby Back Shak up there with other celebrated local favorites (Pecan Lodge, Terry Black's, etc.). This review is all about this place not wanting to serve me because they were closing in 25 mins and would not let me eat my meal inside their restaurant. I could only get it to go because frankly, the lady wanted to go home you could tell. I had just walking a mile to this place because the hotel had told me that it was worth the walk. I walked in the door at 5:14pm they closed on Tuesday's at 5:45pm. There was a lady picking up her order once she did I the lady asked me how could she help me and I said to her I know your closing soon I looked at my phone and I said in 25 mins and she flat out said no. I told her that I had just walked a mile because the hotel had recommended this place but she didn't care she said no I could not eat inside. As I walked out the lady who was there picking up her order said to me, wow that's not right and just shook her head said that that wasn't right. 25 mins to order and eat. I would have been the only one there. The owner should fire that lady for denying me service during hours of operation. Why post hours !!! I walked back to the hotel and spoke to the manager who recommended this restaurant and told him the story. He apologize to me and said he would never recommend this place to anybody ever again !!! I was told this location had been close for a while and now is back in business.. Headed for lunch today to BBS.. I order myself the 3 Meat plate with two side. Brisket, Chicken Breast, hot link and trying boudin for the first time with a side of corn. The food was all good, I definitely enjoyed the hot link and the chicken. The brisket was a bit on the dry side with just too much fat but with BBQ sauce it gave it a great taste. I tried boudin for the first time and I can say it was not my favorite. The service was professional, welcoming and very attentive. The location was dark and soothing; a place to unwind and enjoy the company of others or one other. It was clean and smelled fresh no lingering bad odors nor was it stuffy. The food I was NOT pleased with but the packaging for pick up was impressive. First take note this is "Memphis style" barbecue. This is not Memphis barbecue so if youre looking for a Central or Cozy Corner type meal it's not that. I am a native Texan who lived 17 years in Memphis and learned from the great pitmasters like Horton Payne and John Wills. This is Texified pork barbecue. (By the same token don't order beef in Memphis.) Where is the disconnect? First, Memphis barbecue is built on smoked pork shoulder, , basted with vinegar based mop, which the meat is then pulled. If served on a sandwich it will be on a bun with finishing sauce and a vinegar based slaw. This place has no pork shoulder, and instead serves a smoked loin which is sliced like brisket. It is dry because it has no fat or connective tissue. The ribs are better, being baby backs instead of spares. They are served dry style like the Rendezvous, though they need more seasoning. The cook was good and they were peeled which is rare in Texas. I prefer wet ribs which get finalized with finishing sauce for a glaze but these were good. Brisket was their best meat on this day. It was tender and moist. Well seasoned. I like their slaw as it's vinegar based and the beans are solid. Their sauce is good. read more

This is a very highly decorated restaurant that is off the beaten path but well worth the trip. The walls all filled with articles and accolades from city and state recognition for their food. I would advise you to judge them on their own merit and not try to compare them to other bbq in Dallas as they are a little different. It was the ribs for me! They were so flavorful with good spice and tenderness. The owner that helped me explained that it was ribs that got him into the business and man am I glad they did. This shack is located off the beaten path south of downtown, but it has a wide variety of meats to choose from. Beef brisket, beef ribs, pork, chicken, turkey, ham, boudain, link sausage, cornish hen, smoked bologna, drummettes... goodness! I selected the three meat combo plate with two sides for $13.50. My meat choices were the brisket, cornish hen, and original link sausage. The sides were green beans and cole slaw. The brisket was moist with not too much fat. Cornish hen was something I had never seen on a BBQ menu before so I had to try it. The bird had a nice peppery seasoning and wasn't dry. The sausage was sliced into four pieces and tasted wonderful. The green beans must have been cooked in some pork broth as it even had a meaty flavor which I didn't mind at all. The cole slaw was not too sweet and had the right amount of tanginess for my palate. The sausage wasn't juicy or had much of a punch to it. No peppery taste, but at least you have a smokey flavor. The sausage was compact like eating jerky. I tried their chicken drums/wings. Soft, but not too soft. Nothing bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way to order it. Sides: I'm not sure if their baked potatoes were either prepared late or very popular (I think they ran out), but they didn't have any available until 12:45pm. My potato salad has a good taste, but lacked in texture. If more potato chunks were available, it'd be less like mashed potatoes for me. The cole slaw was good. I enjoyed the bite and taste.
