While In Boston I had to find a sushi place to eat that was between Boston and Hartford CT. I really thought I had no chance to finding this gem in Sturbridge MA. Love the sushi here, probably visit at least twice a month. I've never had their hotpot and never sat anywhere but the hightops or bar. The fish always tastes fresh and the drinks are typically well balanced. Sometimes service can be sluggish, only one bartender on for the whole front room seems to be a weekday norm. My best friend and I sat on the deck for lunch this afternoon and had a wonderful time. Out waiter, Anthony, was absolutely wonderful. Wonderful everything. The outside seating is delightful. The inside looked super nice but we dined outdoors. Bathrooms were very nice and very clean. Service was exceptional. The little details that come together to make this an overall remarkable experience - you can just tell someone has put a lot of thought into every detail to make this a wonderful place. The bamboo skewered lemons for the waters are beautiful and fun. The spicy seafood salad was amazing - borderline too spicy for me which makes it perfect. The shrimp fried rice was good for my 11 year old daughter and the presentation was a nice touch. The sushi rolls we ordered for my husband, my 12 year old son and myself were fantastic. Beautiful presentation and wonderful sushi. We will definitely be back as much as we can. It was a pricey meal for us but worth it. We had lobster tails and bok choy and other veggies which we dropped into very hot broth on our table in front of us. The only saving grace of this review is the amazing waitress we had and the food. Besides that this establishment has the rudest hostesses I have ever met. They should not be allowed to speak to humans. After making a reservation, confirming, being called to confirm, we arrive to no reservation. Instead of accommodating us the hostesses treat us like second class citizens and literally argue with us. Screaming arguing... I have been in the customer service industry for 20 years and I am absolutely appalled at how immature, rude, and degrading this staff is. This restaurant is attractive, however if you don't order the hot pot, be prepared to wait at least 45 minutes for your food after ordering. The shrimp and scallop s arrived cold and was very sweet. My husband's teriyaki steak was all fat and gristle. Awful and covered in a thick sauce so couldn't see how terrible it was. We have been going to Baba in Worcester for about 10 years and love it so we were in Sturbridge and went to Baba. The quality of the sushi was amazing!! We had four making rolls. Not happy about the dishes. They are so small you can hardly put enough soy sauce in the dipping bowl and get a good mix with the wasabi! The under plates are to small to put a few pieces of sushi on and hole your dipping bowl too. The dipping bowls are so small that the sushi does not fit so you only get an edge in the soy sauce. If you are at and end of the table and the platter is out of reach you are out of luck, because you will not be able to put more then one or two peaces of sushi on the tiny plate! Half way through the meal the table was covered in soy sauce because of the small size of the dipping bowl. Every time you dipped into the soy sauce, the soy sauce splashed over continually through the meal . Sorry I am very disappointed. I really like this place. Being a huge soup fan, I love the hot pot part of this restaurant. You can make your own soup! Also, the hot pot portions are huge, so you can feed 2(ish) people for $10-12 depending on what kind of stuff you like in your soup. I'm a relatively basic eater though. Also, I don't eat seafood, but still like this place. The drinks are expensive but strong. My boyfriend really likes the sushi. Each roll is fairly reasonable priced, but it does add up as most people want more than one roll. Ambiance wise, this place is just cool. It has a very sleek but relaxed vibe. You can either dress up or wear jeans. There aren't usually a lot of kids there, which I prefer when we're going out for a date night. I think the menu might be a little expensive for a kid-friendly family outing. All in all, I definitely recommend. read more

We've been so excited to try this place and it didn't disappoint. Sturbridge has needed another Asian restaurant and Baba is excellent. Despite the plethora of German, Italian and English cars in the lot (including mine), the prices are very reasonable. The sushi was good but we went for the hot pot and the tomyum broth was wonderful, with the perfect balance of spiciness and flavor. We went with the seafood and tofu and we very pleased. The service was stellar and the owner Wilson is a nice guy and is always around checking in on guests. The thing that really impressed us is that they had gluten free soy sauce (soyu) for my partner as she cannot have wheat. We thought that was fantastic and the icing on the cake. Give this place a try. We like Kaizen but feel that their prices are a little on the obscene side. Check out Baba and you'll be very impressed. read more

I am a frequent consumer and lover of sushi--have had lots especially in New York, Hawaii and also in Japan. The sushi here is fine but not great. We ordered seven rolls and some gyoza as take-out for a birthday celebration. The size of the rolls was "manini" (small) as they say in Hawaii. Even the house specials, like Lucky Jade, were small rolls compared to what many other restaurants do for their fancy rolls. Taste was ok, but not superb by any means. Tuna roll used the dark tuna rather than bright red higher grade fish. Also, how do you pack up nine orders of food for take-out and only give two sets of chopsticks? Not a huge deal but a little thoughtfulness would go a long way. Friends in Worcester rave about Baba Sushi in that city, and I have not been there, but the experience here was not quite up to expectations. read more

I wish I could put a picture here of our last trip here. Since COVID happened this place is totally downhill. I reached out to the owners for a partial refund for all the sushi that went in the trash and they never responded. I told them the apps were good, but the sushi was awful, one of them even looked like chopped up spam. It was inedible. I even tipped the hostess handling order $20. We have always been loyal to Babba and we will not give them another dollar as long as we live after this last experience with no response to my email. If you cant serve quality food during this time, just close up shop! All you are doing is dragging your name in the mud. And by the looks of it with the most recent reviews here, you went from averaging almost a 5 to a 3. I guess I am not surprised. I will just go back down the street in Sturbridge now to the amazing Kyoto a half mile down the street. Keep it up and many other people will do the same :) read more

This was our second time going to Baba Sushi in Sturbridge. It was very busy. They opened the second floor to seating, so perhaps there were extenuating circumstances regarding our experience I'm about to convey. The service was excellent. Apps and drinks came quickly and she was very attentive. On our first visit the food, presentation and service were deserving of 5 stars. The reason I give 3 for our second visit were because of the food itself. My children don't appreciate sushi yet. They chose to order the filet mignon. In our group of 7, 4 chose the filet. Yes. I know. Why did they order steak in a sushi restaurant. What did they expect? These orders were for 3 med-rare and 1 medium. The food took a long time to be prepared. Again, perhaps because they were busy. I understand. But ALL four orders came out WELL DONE. Not close to well. Hockey puck well. Dry. Seared on the outside (maybe searing is normal though). But just so you understand, an order of the filet has two 5oz filets per order, one stacked atop the other. All 8 pieces of meat were overlooked. I could understand a few being cooked wrong, but ALL? We mentioned it and showed it to the waitress. She offered to take them back, but we had already waited so long that we chose to live with it. I KNOW this restaurant usually delivers excellent food. My take away from this? Don't order the steak. Unless you really don't care how it comes out. read more

We attempted to eat here about a month ago. The restaurant is gorgeous, but we can't comment on the food. They couldn't find our reservation which we had only made an hour before, and even suggested that we had made a mistake and had made the reservation in Worcester. We were offered a high top, but honestly, I can't stand eating a nice meal at a high top, so they put us in the party room upstairs, where we were the only people in a room away from everything. Try again, they sat us on a sofa in front of a coffee table. We left. Really nice place with complimentary parking. My daughters and I had the miso soup, which was a generous portion. Ordered the gyoza appetizer and there was enough for three people to share. They both had veggie sushi - and I have to say I liked the cucumber since it was practically shredded - not the clunky pieces you usually get. My chicken teriyaki with sticky rice was pretty large so that I could thankfully take it home. My only reason for not giving it 5 Stars is the service. Was at this location last weekend while visiting family in the area. Have some special requirements for food so didn't know how it would work out. We all loved it. Went for the Sushi and ended up getting that and the Hot Pot (veggies and fish). All the food was excellent and the service was very polite and helpful. Really enjoyed the dinner here, we took our time and visited and never were rushed. It was a Sunday afternoon and not a busy time, but they were very attentive and explained the Hot Pot options for my sister who had not had it before. From the beginning to the end, everything was wonderful. I arrived a few minutes before they opened for lunch, and a kind waiter ushered me in and showed me where the bathroom is and then another server told me to choose our table....all this before they opened! What happy and kind people. Then the lunch. We ate the hot pot and also sushi, so we experienced both sides. All of it was extremely fresh and well-prepared. The restaurant was not busy, and the server (Liz) told us to stay as long as we wanted. It was a special occasion, so it was particularly helpful to stay in one place for our afternoon together. Beware, the Redheaded Panda cocktail tastes like candy! So good!! We started with a dozen oysters. They came dressed with a citrus sauce, Tabasco and caviar. They were fresh, firm and oh so flavorful. The sushi did not disappoint either. We ordered Crown Maki and Holiday Maki. Seriously, I can't even think of the right words to describe these rolls except that....they were so good we couldn't stop eating so we ordered another roll! This place is definitely worth the stop.
