Well, to start off, it was EXTREMELY hard to find their actual website as the link on here and typing it into google takes me to something totally different. (Pictures of what I am referring to are below). Once I was able to actually find the site I called in an order for pickup which was very easy. The restaurant is very small but nice. Now... let's get into the food... ‍ I had such high hopes based on their reviews from here and TikTok. My hopes were shattered once I actually started eating. I love African food and this was very disappointing. ALL of the meat was EXTREMELY over cooked to the point it tasted like jerky. There was very little spice in the jollof rice and the goat was more fat and skin than meat. The vegetable stew was good but I didn't expect fish to be in it since I didn't order the seafood one. It also has a lot of fish bones throughout it. The plantains were sweet but not as seared as I'm used to, they were more on the mushy side. The staff is nice however.

I'm back again.... Once again they did not disappoint! Let's start with the owners they are Nigerian real authentic Nigerians that speak their language within this establishment. As a foodie I appreciate culture as I explore their cuisine. I was surprised when I found out that cooks behind the scene were all men! Yeah I couldn't believe how good the food taste for it to be all men who were cooking the food. Yeah, that was a bias statement but hey! You don't find a lot of men who are great cooks let alone the owner of the business. The inside looks cute. Small but spaced out enough so you don't feel like you are on top of other customers. It's definitely a try.

I have been coming to Baba Jollof for almost 2 years now, and I probably eat her almost twice a week. Out of all the Nigerian Restaurants/lounges that I have been to this one is definitely my favorite. The service is great and the food comes out in a timely manner. The place is cleaned , and the set up is dope, they have seats and booths where you can sit and enjoy your food . If you are a Hookah smoker they have hookah there as well. But wait Baba Jollof is also a BYOB establishment !! They have several TVs around the establishment as well as music playing. A good place to bring a group of friends to have a good time, or you can come alone and just enjoy the vibe. I would say my favorite is the rice and stew with goat meat, nice size portions and it is sure to feel you up. This place is a must if you haven't been! 5 stars Baba Jollof ! 5 stars !

Jollof was spot on! Spot on! I was pleased. Portions are heaping. Each order comes with huge portion of jollof, meat and succulent plantains. The environment: small clean restaurant placed in a gas station strip mall. In side is very neat, decor is chíc. Would probably seat 25-30 comfortably. Several TVs. Supposedly there will be hookah at some point. When I visited, stay-at-home orders had just been lifted and not many were voyaging out to eat. I was the only one in the restaurant. But they were nice and accommodating and I feel this place has great odds despite a rough start with COVID season!

Special Baba Jollof Rice and Beef
Otesia E.

I was craving Rice and Beef. I was looking at the different places on my Doordash and Ubereats app and comparing them, because I'm such a picky gal. My safe place is usually Marie African, but I wanted to try a different restaurant. Royal Point was on my list to try but they were closed, so that was a bummer. Now, I really like Jollof Rice, but once I discovered Coconut Rice a few years ago, I usually order that with Goat or Beef at most places. I love the fact that it has Shrimp and Carrots in it. I have wanted to try Baba Jollof for a while now and since Uber Eats delivers I decided to give them a try. Looking at the menu I discovered that they not only have the regular Jollof Rice but they also have a Party Jollof Rice. I was definitely down to try that so I ordered that with beef. The rice itself looked tasty and very plentiful. Once I tried it though it was pretty dry, and the chicken in it was very hard. I didn't know if it was old chicken(not freshly made) or overcooked chicken. It had tons of Peas in it which I don't really care for(but that's my preference). It lacked carrots though, there were a few and I really like carrots so if it was loaded with carrots I wouldn't have complained at all. I only ate a small portion the rice. The beef would've been superb if they had simmered it in the tomato stew. It seems they just cooked it and that was it, so it tasted like beef without the Nigerian flavor. I love the Stew, so if the meat was slathered in it I wouldn't have said a word. I tried two of the Plantains and they were good. I like my Plantains with a little crisp to them and they had that. I would give them another try, but I would go to the restaurant and order instead of ordering thru an app.

Fish Egusi & fufu
Antonio B.

I ordered take out. The cook came out twice to confirm my order. Super nice. Good service. Laid back. They are set up for dine-in but it feels more of a carry out place. I ordered the fish egusi. It came with an order of fufu. I absolutely love the flavors. The right amount of spicy. 10/10!!! I'll definitely try other items as well as continue ordering the fish egusi.

Jollof Rice and Plantain with suya

Loved this place. Great music and service was fast. We ordered Jollof and plantains with a side of suya. Portions are big we ended up taking about 2/3s home and reheated it the next day . They have hookah as well. We didn't try it this visit but will definitely try it next time.

a plate of food on a table

I went on a weekday afternoon for takeout, so I wasn't expect to see a hookah crowd. It's very stylish, hip, and "comfortable" As far as the food is concerned, A+. I ordered the fried rice and plantain with fish. In fact I'm writing this review majorly because how pleased I am with the amount of food that was given for the price. I got an entire fried fish, and enough rice to feed two people at once. When it comes to nigerian food, this isn't usually the case. And it is DELICIOUS, AUTHENTIC, AND PLENTY! I can't wait to go back for the hookah experience

I came here to eat and get a drink and having to wait over 10 minutes on a SLOW Tuesday afternoon is a bit crazy. I've gotten better service here on a Friday night where these is no standing room. The catfish basket was delicious as all ways. The best thing on the menu by far!

I had never even heard of a Martinez but I was open to trying it. He made it, looked at it, and said it didn't come out right. He asked if it would be okay for him to redo it which I of course obliged. I appreciated the fact that he didn't serve me a drink that wasn't properly made. The wait was worth it. The Martinez tasted like a sweeter Negroni and I really enjoyed it! I'm glad I was able to visit one of the oldest bars in Houston. It was super low key and chill which was a perfect way to end our evening.

"Not All Who Wander Are Lost"...And what I found was some great food! Atmosphere is casual, service…read moreis friendly, the vibe is definitely Viking (and from what I have heard, it's really popping during brunch!). We came on. Friday after work during happy hour and the prices could not be beat, especially with their lobster bites (was sitting at about $30, and we got them half off!) Drinks were fantastic! I selected the "Golden Cadillac" that comes with a miniature bottle of Grand Marnier inside of it. Very good. My company decided on an array of appetizers for his "main course", while I went with their Fried Salmon (served with Mac and cheese, and collard greens). Omg! So tasty! The pepper was prevalent throughout, but it did not over power the flavor! I make collard greens at home (and learned from one of the best), and even I found theirs to be pretty good! My company selected fried ribs, along with the lobster bites, and crawfish queso dip, and their wings! I tasted what he got, and we both agreed that the wings were "off the chart" delicious with a beautiful straight off the grill smoky flavor! So good that he got another order to go! Lol. What made our experience there amazing was our server Ray (Rajean = think "the 90's TV Show "Living Single"..."smooches"!)...she was the best!! From her hello, to walking us through the menu (as first-timers), her recommendations, her energy, her smile, and her being very relatable. Loved her! My only gripe was the bathrooms, the ladies room needed attention (and could use a spruce all around). It doesn't help that it is a bit small, but yeah, they need to focus some efforts on ensuring it's upkeep. As for seating and parking, there is a bar area and limited seating toward the front of the restaurant, but it does extend to back of the house with additional seating. There is also patio seating as well. Because this place seems popular, it is best to reserve ahead to ensure your seating. Parking is very limited! They do however, offer valet (but at $20+). There is off-street parking, but be careful since this is a residential area and nothing is secure. All in all, I really had a great time and left with my belly full! Definitely worth checking out! Definitely come here and be completely disrespected like they are you doing YOU a favor by taking your hard-earned money. Make sure you know and check your bill for every single fake tip that you do not approve on your credit card or debt card. The scheme is set up to put a hidden "tip" in your bill, then quickly give you a detailed tablet with additional tips for service as well as another discriminatory tip on top of that. In addition, the new scheme is the disposable hose charge of $3.49 per hookah that they round up to $4 after you leave along with the additional 15% tip that seriously makes its way onto your final bill unbeknownst to you. In addition, watch the servers at night who zoom past your table, do not catch your eye, do not want to serve you and show their disgust with hard breathing, eye-rolling, slow service and inside jokes to each other about the customers that they do not like. They will perform all of this behavior within earshot of you with no discretion whatsoever, especially the employees that work from 5PM to close in the evening on the patio. I would strongly encourage anyone who has used a credit card or debit card at Cafe Layal on West Gray to check your receipt and immediately dispute each and every charge with your bank or credit union. Hopefully EVERYONE who knows the real deal with this place, the high staff turnover, the laziness and a myriad of other issues, will avoid it. There are so many other upscale, well-run establishments in Houston with a much better product and employees that actually take pride in serving customers not slandering them.

This night I went with one of my close sorority sisters and ended up smoking hookah with her. This location was dark and very easy on the eyes. It showcased a heavy middle eastern influence since hookah is heavy there. The variety of options are given in a menu style and allow you to pick whatever fits your needs at the time. You are also able to freely smoke as long as you would like with the occasional waiter coming to replace the coals on your hookah. They also hire their DJs every night, so the music can change and control the mood depending on what is played. The do played a variety of music from hip hop to r&b and pop, there was no shortage on the tunes just know that they will change. The downside of this place is the smoke, if you're asthmatic or have trouble seeing this place might pose a couple of risk to you. You might have trouble breathing or being able to see the ground as you walk into the puff clouds of other patrons. There is also a mixture of patrons, some there to enjoy themselves and others to have parties and fun, if you're set on a flat consistent vibe then this may not be a place, there was someone on a couch enjoying their entire life while we were there, luckily we didn't care how they did anything it didn't interfere with us. Risk was also a major thing to be mindful of, the coals can be extremely hot and give damaging burns, people can also get sick from the hookah so be careful of the health risk and also use caution around the hookah to avoid coals!
