The inside of the falafel...no green herbs
    Angy M.

Uhhhh gotta say I am pretty disappointed with this place! I'm shocked and confused by the positive reviews. So we decided to pop in because our favorite place to grab Middle Eastern food was closed. I pulled up some nearby suggestions and this spot came up! Walking in, there was a great smell of what I expected to be yummy food. The place also has a sort of grocery store with plenty of neat stuff to buy, ranging from tahini to fig paste, homemade pita chips, hummus by the pound and fresh baklava. So I thought, "Ok, if their falafel, hummus and tahini are any good, I'll buy more in bulk!" since this is what we're normally doing with our go-to place. I ordered a side of six falafel, costing about $6 and it came with two sauces (tahini and hummus was what I chose). Unfortunately, the falafel was BLAND BLAND BLAND. From the picture I took, you can see no green because there were no herbs or spices in the chickpea mix The falafel tasted watery and seemed to have only garlic basically. Then the hummus and tahini were also EXTREMELY runny and just had no flavor. Honestly, I believe there are positive reviews on here because people ordering wraps, filled with a ton of toppings, don't actually realize the taste of the falafel is nonexistent. Perhaps the falafel is so bland because only a mild mix of spices is added into the chickpea mix due to customers not appreciating strong flavors?? Hmmm Or could it be that the place has WAYYYY too many menu items (pizzas, calzones, etc.) so they aren't focusing on producing top quality flavors because they have too much going on (why are they selling Italian food in a Middle Eastern - Syrian I believe - restaurant??) Anyway, I don't mean to be harsh (the service was really friendly!!) but the food was incredibly underwhelming

Oops. Only pic I have of my falafel wrap, but it was so good!

I drove by Baba Ghannooj a few times and really wanted to try it. I called in an order (I was having trouble adding toppings with the online ordering) for a falafel wrap and a calzone. The man working when I went in was very nice. The falafel wrap ended up being a 10/10! I added feta cheese, tahini, tzatziki, and olives to it. I think it might be my new favorite falafel. My boyfriend really liked his meatball calzone as well. Will definitely be back!! Try it, you won't regret it!

Falafel Wrap - seriously.. this place is NO JOKE!!!

Huge fan of this place. It may seem like just a store and a takeout place, but their falafel and their baba Ghannooj are the best!!! They are super nice people too!!

Baba black sheep, have you any hummus? Yes Fox, yes Fox, but no bags of pita for you. I can't give this little family-owned store/restaurant in rural Massachusetts less than a 5-star because the Baba "Ghannooj" (I've never seen it spelled like that but what do I know) is freaking amazing. Other places make crappy "Babaghanoush" or mediocre "Babaganoush", but when I find a good one, I can swim in it, bathe in it, writhe in it, and... ok that's enough. Basically it's Eggplant dip. It's a lot like Hummus but with a distinct taste and texture of Roasted Eggplant (that's Aubergine to the French and British among you). Service here was nice, and he insisted I try some free desserts, which I wasn't crazy about, but they were free! I didn't like the price of the Baba, and I especially didn't like that I didn't get any pita with it. It was a pita that it worked out that way. Or more of a P.I.T.A. Luckily I had bread from my previous food stops so I was able to thoroughly enjoy it. When it comes to Middle Eastern spreads, this place raises the Ba-ba for Baba "Ghannooj."

    3 out of 5 onion rings i ordered for $4 smh...ridiculous.
    Amina B.

I've come here several times and have always enjoyed the food...until today. Prices have always been reasonable but apparently this place is under new owners. It's not so much the pricing as it is the amount of food they give you. Today I ordered onion rings(one price/no sizes) for 3.99. When I opened container at work, there were literally only 5 onion rings (small too). I Normally don't complain or write these reviews but this was rather ridiculous. Beware and check order before leaving. Never had to do that here but now you should. I only ate 2 onion rings...smh. won't be going back.

I waited months for it to get better but it just keeps on getting worse. Both, the food and the service is getting worse. The food quality is noticeably declining. The prices are getting laughable too. A pasta dish with protein went from about $22 to $37. If I'm paying almost 40 dollars for a pasta dish, I'll go to federal hill and won't have to deal with a screaming baby two tables over...and the food quality is going to better too. The service went from exceptional to freaking terrible. The staff turnover is so high. It's so high it's very noticeable. They can not keep staff to save their life. Every Saturday it's a sea of new faces, confused and terrified. If they even remember you sat down...and many times you just wait and wait ...I assure you, they will mess up your order. It's not even their fault, they are all new all the time. I feel bad but it sucks when your whole dinner gets fudged up over and over again. Newbies that don't know what basic drinks are. I had to walk the server through putting my drink in the POS system at least four times in a row...this has been happening for 4-5 months now. I've been going there for at least five years, several times a month. I'm a solid regular but i spend 150-170 each time and it's becoming a total bummer. I have to explain rhe menu or what a simple drink I'm ordering is. They forget about our table all the time lately. I've had them ring in completely wrong food or tell me what I'm ordering doesn't exist...it does. Most of the time the food comes out wrong, or cold. I just eat it at this point because it's become a norm. The bill is almost always wrong. I give up. In search for a new go to. This used to be a gem. I was hoping to find a complete renovation from the previous business it replaced but, alas, the only thing that changed is the name and a few added items in their prepared food section. The new owners have recently immigrated to the US, so the woman who assisted me had challenges communicating with me in English. Luckily, she had a translator on her phone that translated the list of food on my text message into Arabic writing . I think these people are VERY BRAVE for starting over in a far away land. In the grocery section I bought a jar of pickled turnips for the chicken pita wraps I make at home. (Trader Joe's now sells toum, or garlic sauce, traditionally used as a condiment in Lebanon similar to garlicky mayonnaise. You can use meat from rotisserie chicken available at most local grocery stores). They also have fresh lebneh, or strained yogurt. From the prepared foods section, I highly recommend their kibbeh (if you like lamb; my hubby thought it was good) and their slow cooked chicken with Syrian rice pilaf, which is an authentic Syrian regional home cooked meal. This was delicious and the portion was perfect for the price. I also liked their milk pudding cups, though I wish the portion was larger. If you decide to try the cheese or spinach pies, you might need to baked it in the oven a while longer as they were undercooked. My four stars is for the slow-cooked chicken with rice pilaf and the milk pudding, which I will come back for. Hopefully, we will see some renovations in the future since it still looks shabby as it did before this business took over

Last night I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Anna's Vesuviano Tonno dinner…read more This dinner was conceived when Chef Anthony got some beautiful tuna from American Seafood, based out of Stonington, CT. It was a menu created around the relationship between bread and seafood in southern Italy. As a culinarian by trade, I love dinners like this. I love seeing how a chef's mind works, the flavor pairings, and going on that journey with them. Last night was a wonderful example of that. I attended the dinner solo, my usual cohorts at a different dinner taking place in the city. But I don't mind solo dining. The best part about being solo last night? I was sat at the bar front and center, a veritable chef's table without the high price tag I paid the extra for wine pairings, and they were generous with those pours all night. Our glasses were filled before every course. The hospitality was warm, the service team made everyone feel at home. The interior had a retro feel, with pressed tin ceilings, counter seating along the windows and a tall bar by the kitchen. The first course was a tuna croquette, a smoked yellow fish canola (cone) and tuna crudo with pickled yellow tomatoes. The croquette crispy outside, and so, so creamy inside. The yellowfish cone had lovely textures, the pistachio crunch coming through nicely. The crudo was delicate and tender, the picked tomato bringing the perfect level of acidity. The second course was a Caserta style pizza. No, not the icon on Federal Hill. But pizza montanara - one that is fried and then baked, popularized in the Campania region of Italy and in the town of (you guessed it) Caserta. The first thing you taste is the Sicilain oregano. The crust is crispy but still had give. No flop if that matters. The tomatoes blanched and precisely peeled so they gave easily when you bit into it. The olives and capers paired with the tuna was like an Italian Nicoise pizza. A great eating experience. Next was the Tuna Fattoush, the salad course. The tomatoes tasted like peak summer when I bit into them. Tang from the lime, the mint almost floral with the sumac, the vinegar soaked bread buttery, tart. The tuna coming in the back end bringing the dish together in a magical way. The Mrs Tuna pizza intrigued me. I didn't know what to expect when I saw black dough. But what I experienced was wonderful. Soft dark bread with creamy stracciatella, and the tuna tartar on top sang against the creamy base. You can taste the burnt notes from the mayo but only in the background. It accented the dish, deepening the flavors in an unexpected way. Bufala mozz course was bright, tangy, salty. I didn't think I'd describe mozzarella as bright but here we are. It was a burst of flavor as soon as it hit my tongue. My taste buds lit up immediately. It was made by Lucas at Mozz in Newport. Go find some and try it immediately. Vesuvius pizza. Wow. I had only experienced Anna's through their various seafood pizza specials. This was my first time trying a classic. San Marzano tomatoes from Mt Vesuvius. 48 month aged Parmesan, the same beautiful fresh mozzarella we had in the previous course, basil and a hefty drizzle of high quality Palestinian olive oil. If you ever wondered what the most perfect Margherita was like, this is it. It's like it was cut out of a textbook. The crust was delicious as always, it's sourdough. The cook was crisp and even with the edge still soft and chewy. And finally dessert. Lemon and basil make sense on savory but I realized how special it can be in sweet. The sumac adding floral notes to the smooth custard and the cool basil gel, a study in flavor conception. Every time I go to Anna's, I continue to be impressed by Chef Anthony and his culinary genius. I know to most, this menu would seem odd or outside of the box for pizza. To a certain extent, that is true. But if you are brave enough to take a leap of faith, I have found I'm often rewarded with the most scrumptious landing. And to say I was rewarded last night for my leap would be an understatement. Thank you again for an incredible dinner, Chef Anthony, Michelle and the team at Anna's Vesuviano.

But there was one spot nearby I hadn't been to since November and it was high time I went back. That place is Zesty bites. They're located on that last stretch of Smith St before you cross over in North Providence. I always manage to find street parking in the front but there's more around the corner as well. Imad was in there cranking out a HUGE catering order! There were covered pans everywhere, ready and waiting for the client to come and pick up. But that didn't stop Imad from taking a moment to shake my hand and ask how I was doing lately. I didn't want to take up much of his time as his Friday night was just kicking off but he is genuinely a warm and friendly person, you can't help but smile when he smiles. I took home a Pesty Chicken, house pesto with turkey bacon, onions and chicken, plus a hefty slice of his gorgeous baklava. After my 5 minute drive home I got to it immediately. The pesto is herbaceous, salty from the Parmesan. The turkey bacon is not what you find Butterball making but rather, this was of a much higher quality and was an actual piece of sliced meat instead of a formed amalgamation of ground turkey. All of those ingredients sang while being supported by the incredible crust. I don't quite know how to describe it. It's light, fluffy, but crispy. Crunching into the crust scratched a part of my brain I didn't know needed it until I bit into this little slice of heaven! The baklava looked as good as it tasted. Sweet, spiced, and it had this deep flavor I can't quite put my finger on but it's probably top 3 best I've ever had. If you haven't visited Imad and his shop up over on Smith Hill, then you are missing out on a unique and delicious experience. 10/10, great pizza. Imad runs this small spot in Providence where incredible Lebanese food and pizza coexist. His pizza has that perfect char on the crust, brilliantly simple sauce, and genuine hospitality that feels completely natural, not performed. So when this year's competition rolled around, I came back. Twenty-four places into this month's pizza marathon, we needed to know if Zesty Bites was a one-time thing or if Imad's really doing what I thought he was doing. Turns out, he is. Of course he is. The crust still delivers. Crunchy exterior, chewy interior. Imad's dough artistry hasn't changed. His sauce is fresh and flavorful, built from simple, super fresh ingredients that deliver big taste. No tricks. High quality cheese and pepperoni blend together for a pie that just delivers a little bit of magic to your mouth. Same five tables. Same warm welcome. Imad's still treating customers like they are family who just walked in, not like he's checking boxes. After twenty-four stops this month, you start noticing which places coast and which ones stay consistent. Zesty Bites is consistent. No drop-off. No shortcuts.
