Maybe 15-10 years ago, we used to come here regularly -- I'd often join my husband and his work friends for lunch, and my own co-worker and boss loved Baan Thai's fresh spring rolls/salad rolls so much that we used to order numerous containers for work parties to accommodate vegetarian diets in our small group of mostly meat eaters.
We hadn't been back in a while, mainly because of work changes, and because my husband and I preferred the walkable-from-home Thai Bistro II (which unfortunately closed 4 years ago for retirement). Needless to say we haven't had much Thai food since, unless we were in San Francisco or Las Vegas.
Actually, the only reason we drove through horrible Monterey rush hour traffic through Lighthouse & Del Monte to University Plaza in Seaside on Friday, May 3, 2019 was to have dinner at one of our favorites The Orient (Chinese/Vietnamese), but they had a sign on their door stating they were closed for a couple weeks, which we later learned was for a family vacation (yay, for The Orient family!).
So, we walked around the corner to Baan Thai. To be honest, it could have been an off night to get zero stars (oops, 1 star) rating from me. I should have recognized something was off, because while we looked at the menu and waited for our food, I noticed several tables left whole plates full of food, from salads, to curries, to noodle dishes. Usually, it's so easy to take leftovers home, but apparently no one else wanted to.
I asked for their fresh spring rolls/salad rolls after not seeing them on the menu. Nope, not available. Okay, so no appetizer for us. Next.
After having fabulous drunken noodles in Las Vegas the previous month, I asked about what was their closest rice flat noodle dish without broccoli (I can't eat it anymore, because it gives me severe stomach cramps). I thought I ordered Spicy Noodle, but I think I got served Kai Koar instead, covered in broccoli! I don't remember if there were eggs and peanuts; I just remember mostly broccoli. Maybe it was miscommunication?
I hate to lie and say I'm "allergic" to broccoli, because I think it's unfair to restaurants and people who are truly allergic to things like peanuts (my brother would stop breathing, turn blue, and go into anaphylactic shock in the 1970's, way before food allergies became a thing), but I was definitely afraid I'd be having stomach cramps later that night, which I did to a mild extent even though I picked out as much broccoli as I could for the few bites I had.
My husband's choice was to try something new and ordered their Jungle Curry. Um, no, no, and no! It tasted rancid, like they dumped other people's leftovers into a pot and tried to re-serve it. Additionally, my husband is not a fan of mushrooms and instead of "green beans, corn, Italian squach [sic], pumpkin, bamboo shoots, and Thai basil", it was basically button mushroom soup in a funky curry sauce.
When our server came by and asked us how things were, we told her about the broccoli, which I specifically asked not to have when I ordered, and the weird Jungle Curry "mushroom soup", which, btw, did not list mushrooms on the menu. She simply looked at us for a moment and walked away. No let's offer you something else, no let's take it off your bill, no nothing. I think that was the most disappointing.
Like other people that night, we basically left most of our order on the table. For me, as a street orphan from another country, lucky enough to be living in the Monterey area and can afford to eat out from time to time, and irritatingly ribbed too often that I eat like a starving orphan (well, because I was)... not eating food served to me is a horrible waste and disgrace! I could not eat the food served to me at Baan Thai. Zero stars.
I'm writing this review now, because after 6 months of trying various local Thai places to replace our old favorite Thai Bistro II, we finally found one we like. Reviews forthcoming. read more
