Awful meal How did this place get such high reviews?????? The pad z ew had a bland taste

I came here for lunch over the weekend, so there were no lunch specials. It was pricier than I expected, ~$15 after taxes for an entree. Unlike the weekday lunch, the normal entrees do not come with choice of soup or salad, so I ordered a soup separately. I am so glad I did because the soup ended up tasting better than my entree. I ordered the Tom Kha, a coconut-milk based soup, and it was delicious! Really great flavor and a decent amount of meat and vegetables put into the bowl. The Drunken Noodles was where things fell flat for me. This dish was way too salty. One of the reviews on here has critiqued the food for being too sweet, so I'm wondering if they added extra salt to compensate? Aside from the noodles though, the fried tofu that was added to the noodles was actually very tasty. I think this place still has potential based on the other reviews on here, so I do want to come back. I also want to try the sticky mango rice that is on their dessert menu! read more

WHY was everything so sweet?? Baan Thai had been on my list to try every since I moved here because of the reviews. After two years, I finally had to chance to try it and it was just okay. We ordered the Spicy Eggplant and Beef Oyster. The Spicy Eggplant should be named Sweet Eggplant because there was no hint of spice at all. I requested it to be spicy but that's not what I got at all. And to top it off, it was swimming in a pool of oil. The Beef Oyster was okay. It tasted like both the dishes were made with the same sauce base which was weird to me because I have never had two different Thai dishes taste so alike. Even if other places use the same sauce base, they do it in a way where you can't tell. Usually when you're super hungry, even an okay place tastes amazing but I was left so disappointed and confused! So I have eaten here several more times. The food is really outstanding and completely 5 stars!. I am in love with their Wonton soup and think it's the best I have EVER had. Their red curry is the best in the area. Their Cantaboon Pad Thai is a specialty and really, really good. Their service is still a three star and very hit and miss. The answer for me is carry out. Very good, they are one of my go-to lunch spots since the pandemic started. They observe good practice around the Covid-19 guidelines and are very timely, nice, and punctual. My go-to dishes are pad Thai and Tom Yung soup, and they are excellent - have had them with chicken, shrimp, and tofu.....all very tasty. My experience has been that if a Thai place can't do pad Thai well, they can't do much else well. Highly recommended. read more

Baan Thai is a Thai restaurant located in Apex. They have an extensive menu of authentic Thai food! AND the best part is... you can customize the spicy level! I got their Drunken Noodles (Pad Kee Mao) spicy level 1 and it was delicious! I did add more chili powder to make it spicier. I've been meaning to try Baan Thai for a while so I'm glad I finally got to go! Good, authentic Thai food. Service was not the best, but food made up for it. I got the Pad Prik Basil with chicken, bell peppers, onions, garlic, green beans, and basil. My friend got the Lad Na Noodle - wide noodles in brown gravy sauce with broccoli and carrots. We both enjoyed our dishes! We split the Thai custard and sticky rice and mango and sticky rice desserts - both delicious. I was so so happy to find that they had Thai custard here! read more

Found this Thai restaurant on Yelp and wanted to try it out because of the great reviews -- it definitely didn't disappoint! Service was very prompt and friendly and the food was great. We went during their lunch special, which is $7.95 for normal dishes and $8.95 for Chef Special dishes. Ordered the Pad Z Ew and Yellow Curry, both which were delicious and also came with a coconut soup or peanut sauce salad as part of the $7.95 lunch special. Portions were big and I was satisfied and stuffed by the end of the meal. The Pad Z Ew had thick stir-fried rice noodles with your choice of meat (I got tofu), sliced carrots, scrambled eggs, and broccoli. I thought the sauce was delicious and while the noodles were kind of sticky, I didn't mind it because of how good it was. The Yellow Curry came with your choice of meat, potatoes, onions, carrots, and rice. It was very creamy with a kick of spice to it depending on the heat level you choose. Definitely recommend these two dishes! Also quick tip: if your dish isn't spicy enough, ask the waiter for the sauce platter, which contains 4 different types of chili sauces! read more

I used to like this restaurant but in the last 3-6 months it has gone VERY downhill. Maybe they got new cooks, new owners or are trying to save a couple bucks per order but there is NO EXCUSE. Their green curry has zero flavor. In fact, I wonder if there is any actual curry in it? I think not, because why else would it have no flavor and have green food coloring in it? Yes- GREEN FOOD COLORING. Not even attempt to mix the green food coloring with the yellow food coloring in an attempt to make it appear a little closer to what it should be... NO- LITERALLY EMERALD GREEN. The chicken in my curry was dyed the color of an emerald. So yes, if you love chemicals and green chicken this is the place for you. The curry itself? Totally flavorless. I ordered my food at a 3 spice level (just be,ow "Thai hot" but instead I got a mildly sweet milky emerald green substance. No spice. I had a jar of green curry paste in my fridge. I mixed some if that in to help a bit... We also ordered drunken noodles- So dry, and Also supposedly a 3 spice level. No flavor. Just.... Terrible. To add insult to injury we ordered the "shrimp delight" for our daughter at $8. There were only 3 shrimp in the meal. We were so disappointed. We decided to look up other reviews of the restaurant and ran across a review by a person who suffers gluten intolerance. The person said they spoke with someone at this restaurant to confirm that the curries are gluten free; however, they are made with coconut milk, regular milk and cream. Reading this review was enough for me to toss our entire order in the trash. A total disgusting waste of almost $80. When it comes to Yelp reviews I try to live by the "if you have nothing good to say, it's best not to say anything". I think this place is one of the best options to get the most authentic Thai food around Cary, Apex, Morrisville. I lived in Bangkok for 10+ years so I can confidently say I know what authentic Thai food tastes like. Food is super tasty, portions are great, and they offer a good variety on their menu! Worst Thai food I have ever had. Pineapple fried rice was supposed to have chicken, shrimp, pineapple, raisins, scallions, nuts. No shrimp, no pineapple, no raisins, and very bland. On top of that, when my husband showed up to pick up our to-go order, one of the employees thought he was from DoorDash and started yelling at him about the order - "do your job" - and would not listen to him; treating him not like a customer but a delivery person. I wanted an order of Spring Rolls - I asked how many spring rolls in the order. I could never get a clear answer. I asked if there were 1 or 2 spring rolls in an order. Once again, I could never get a clear answer. I also ordered Mixed Vegetables and a shrimp entree. The person said 25 minutes.....here is were it starts going south.... I arrive - 2 folks waiting on take out. A total of 18 people in the entire seating area. (So not busy at all) It took 50 minutes from the time of the call. Once it came out - it was about $6.00 more than expected. I reviewed the bill, and they had charged me for 2 orders of Spring Rolls. I explained to the person handling my transaction that I only ordered 1 order of Spring Rolls. She assured me that I had asked for 2 orders. I was frustrated and said I only wanted the one order. She pressed me saying I had ordered 2 and in the meantime she ran the card. It's at this point she lets me know that EACH Spring Roll order has 3 Spring Rolls. So I realize I'm getting nowhere with this conversation...I tell her I'm leaving no tip and will gladly leave a review. I leave frustrated, drive to our AirB&B. BAAN THAI, has good food when and if they can cook the correct order. I tried this place 4 times. 1 time they got the order right three 3 times wrong when you call to complain they argue with you and pretty much call you a liar my suggestion to Baan Thai - if your family cant understand or take the orders correctly hire new help. Atrocious. Disgusting. Didn't know red curry could get this bad. They put so much sugar into it, it's inedible. I took out red curry with chicken and extra bamboo shoots and Thai Dumpings. The Dumpings were fine but the red curry was absolutely too sweet. Like a dessert. Same goes for their Thai tea. It's as sweet as sweet tea at Bojangles but also it lacks in favoring that makes it Thai. Save your money go somewhere else. read more

I never really see anyone in here so was hesitant to try it out. Have heard good reviews on this place so decided to check it out. There was very few people in the place when we walked in. We were seated but it took a very long time for anyone to bring us water or take our order us. We ordered 2 noodle dishes (pad thai & Khao soy) to share and 3 soups (Tom yum, tom kha gai & wonton). The soups were a disappointment. They were all lacking in substance. The tom kha had a few slices of chicken with a few mushrooms floating on top. When the waitress brought the noodle dishes out, she set it down & immediately walked away. Ummmm...some plates would be very helpful. We waited & waited (there was no one left in the dining room at this point) & finally had to flag her down. This did not make for a pleasant dining experience. The pad that was bland & lacking in flavor. The Khao soy was pretty good but wasn't good enough to make us want to return. This place was also pricier than most of the places we've been. There are better Thai restaurants out here & definitely better service. It's a shame since this is close to home for us but I'm more than willing to travel for good food & service. read more

Possibly I have just hit the wrong times with training new servers (she was very nice and above average bc of it) but this review is for food quality. The Tom Yum is a 2 star. Uncooked raw mushrooms with tiny flecks of chicken and no other vegetables. The special the yellow curry noodle bowl was like a swirl of sugar and fat without flavor. Solid Thai food in Apex, I'll take it! Since I crave Thai food like no other cuisine I love a new Thai restaurant in town. Baan Thai is right next to the Harris Teeter on 55 in Apex, I believe it use to be a sushi restaurant before. I walked in for lunch last week and I was the only person in the place which made me nervous at first but the friendly waiter eased my mind. The menu was full of your traditional Thai dishes: curries, papaya salad, pad Thai and more. For my first visit I had to try the curry. There wasn't really a description on the lunch menu of the veggies etc. in the curry but I had faith they would do it right. I ordered the lunch portion of the yellow curry which came with a choice of soup or salad. I opted for the soup which was absolutely delicious and tasted like Tom Kha (coconut soup with tofu and mushrooms). The curry came out next and it was a generous portion filled with tofu, potatoes, carrots, and onions. Thank you so much for not filling my curry with unnecessary bamboo shoots and fillers:) The curry was really good I wish they would have asked the level of spiciness when I ordered I could have used a little more spice, I also ordered a Thai iced tea that did not disappoint. Finally got the chance to try this Thai place! I am glad we decided to make the drive out for date night. What stood out about this place place is that it is extremely authentic flavor-wise. We ordered spring rolls, yellow curry, and pad-thai (all vegetarian). The pad thai had the exact flavors of pad thai that I always crave. I also love the yellow curry. Yellow curry isn't usually my go-to curry, but I just loved the creaminess of this one. They also didn't over-do it with the potato. The tofu was cooked well too. I knocked off a star because the spring rolls were very bland. Furthermore, we ordered our food spicy, and all that meant was that they sprinkled a bunch of crushed red pepper flakes all over our curry and noodles!!! It totally took away from the authenticity of the dishes. Next time I would probably just forgo having my food spicy so that I can just enjoy the flavors without the added taste of pizza-parlor crushed red pepper. I also thought it was weird that the curry was served on a plate. This made serving ourselves a very difficult task. Finally, they did charge us for extra steamed rice even though the amount of rice that came with the curry was not nearly enough. Despite these minor disturbances, of all the thai places in the Triangle I have tried so far, I would definitely pick this one to satisfy my occasional thai cravings! Craving Thai today so I met my friend in Apex to try this place. I'd been here a while back when it was a Japanese place and liked that too. There was a buy one get one 50% off for sushi so we tried some to start. The Apex roll had fried shrimp, avocado, cucumbers and more with crab across the top. Pretty and delicious. The spicy tuna roll wasn't very spicy but had a nice smear of sauce on the side so that helped. The rice was a little compacted for me but it tasted good. I had Pad Z-ew which is called See Ew sometimes. It was delicious with large flat noodles in a smoky sauce, eggs, chicken and veggies. My friend ordered Pad Woon Sen with thin "silver" noodles, eggs, chicken, peppers, tomatoes and onions. This too was wonderfully tasty. Both of our dishes had good sized portions and were delicious. So many other things on the menu I wanted to try. Service was great! I will be back! read more

I was looking to try someplace new and saw the good reviews and decided to try this restaurant. What a big disappointment. I ordered the Thai chicken fried rice and what I got was a container of white rice with some chicken and vegetables thrown in with absolutely no seasoning. If I wanted white rice I could've just made it myself. I've had Thai fried rice from several area Thai restaurants and this by far was the worst I've ever had. My suggestion to the chef is go try the fried rice at Thai spices or Sushi Thai and get an idea of what is supposed to look like and taste like. I will never go back to this place. read more

My husband and I have a special place in our heart for Thai food. I'm SO excited to have an amazing tasting Thai restaurant so close to my home. The flavors were deep and layered. Fresh, spicy, crunchy. The crab ragoons, called something else, actually taste like crab. They are creamy and come with a sweet dipping sauce. The service was warm and friendly.
