This place has been a bit hit or miss for me. I've usually ordered takeout and my go-tos are the standard curries and fried rice. And most of the time it's been pretty good. But I recently dined in, and unfortunately it was a bit of a letdown. We ordered the Thai Wings Zab, which felt like plain chicken coated heavily in chili powder. I don't mind spice, but this one felt like heat with no substance to back it up with. The other dish I tried was the Thai basil chicken stir fry, which is mainly the reason for this 3-star rating. We stopped by Thai 54 right after landing at RDU and on our way to Rocky Mount. Thai 54 appears to be fairly new and is decorated nicely. The hostess/server greeted us as we came in and showed us to a table. We saw a good assortment of Thai dishes, including a whole page of vegetarian options. There were four types of tea to select from (I chose Jasmine). My wife and I selected entrees and asked about their soups. They have a coconut soup and the server suggested a big bowl to share and asked if we wanted to add chicken. We did. Let me tell you, that soup was delicious!!! It was a large bowl, large enough that if we went to Thai 54 again we'd share the soup and a single entree. My wife had a chicken and vegetables stir fry. She really enjoyed it. I had the massaman curry. Excellent. Just a hint of spice. When we fly into RDU again, we'll return to Thai 54. read more

How did it take us this long to find a decent Thai place? You wouldn't notice Thai 54 if you were just passing by...it's tucked in the back of a generic strip mall. It's not a fancy place either but it's perfect for a casual meal. What really shines here is the food. Everything we ordered was well made, very fresh, perfectly seasoned and cooked to order. The flavors were perfectly balanced and big plus...they will adjust the heat level to your tolerance. Portions were generous as well. I can't wait to go back to try other flavors on their menu. Be advised & take notice of their closing hours. They stop seating for dine-in about 30 minutes before closing. The best Thai food I've had in a while. A hidden gem. I went on a weeknight and ordered out. I ordered spring rolls, crab fried rice, and mango sticky rice. I sat at the bar as I waited for my order and noticed how quiet/peaceful it was in there. The customer service was amazing. Be prepared to wait for your food. They gave me plenty of crab in the rice and I love how the coconut cream that came with the sticky rice had shredded coconut in it. It was a nice touch that I hadn't experienced anywhere else. Not a fan! The location is great and has plenty of parking. We got Thai boat noodle and Pad woon sen. Their spicy level is insane even for an Asian person and not consistent. We got level 1 for both and the boat noodle was def much spicier and at the same level as Thai hot in other places. The boat noodle was so weird, very sweet and spicy, not sour at all. And it has a strong smell of Pho, very odd. Pad woon sen was decent but there was more meat and veggies than noodle, which threw off the balance of the dish. The place wasn't very busy as yet, but the phone was ringing off the hook with orders and Grub hub. As my appetizer, it was a toss-up between the Goyza or Spring rolls. I got the Gyoza per the waitresses' recommendation. As my entrée, i ordered the Basil Thai fried rice with chicken. They brought out a little seasoning dish with pepper flakes, fish sauce, and paper's in vinegar. I took a little bit of each and made my own spicy concoction. The food came out, and I used my seasoning. HOO GOSH. Spicy! But so good. I was crying and sweating but loving the flavor with the rice and chicken. This was better than a few other places I've tried. Everything was very good and flavorful. I love some good Thai food. This place was just that. The place was very clean and spotless. The service was good. The waitress was attentive and helpful. The environment was nice with music and a video on the TV. Entertaining. So, in all, this place makes some good Thai food. We loved our foods so much. We ordered- Crab Fried Rice, Fried fish balls, Tom Kha Gai, BBQ pork and Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. The fried rice comes pretty big and super tasty. I had an extremely disappointing experience at this restaurant and feel it's important to share the full story so others can make an informed decision. I ordered Pad Thai with shrimp and Drunken Noodles with shrimp, but instead received both dishes with chicken--which was undercooked and not safe to eat. I called the restaurant immediately, and the owner (Philip) told me the kitchen was closed but he would replace the order the next day. My dinner was already ruined, and I had to eat something else despite paying $48. The next day, we tried a few bites again hoping the food was safe--but it wasn't. The Pad Thai had a foul smell, and the chicken was still undercooked and rubbery. The Drunken Noodles were sticky and unappetizing. We didn't eat either dish and kept the food refrigerated as proof. When I called to get the replacement the next day, I asked for a different dish of equal value because I didn't want the same exact order that had already made me feel sick. But instead of understanding or offering alternatives, the owner was rude and dismissive, insisting I could only get the same items and refusing a refund over the phone. He said I needed to drive back 30 minutes to return the uneaten food just to "prove" I wasn't lying. I made the trip, returned the food, and finally received a refund--but still, no apology was given for the wrong or unsafe order. What concerned me even more is that I observed him not discarding the returned food immediately. I sincerely hope it wasn't kept for reuse, but that alone was alarming from a food safety perspective. read more

Been following this place since they were a food court stand in Hmart. They got me through my pregnancy with a Laos Papaya Salad about 2 times a week back then. When they closed I was heart broken. But now that they returned to a full restaurant in Morrisville we make the drive from Cary for their food. I always get the Laos Papaya salad (although I miss the salt egg version this one is still amazing). Then we try to branch out to try new things. Crab fried rice- stellar! Big hunks of crab with tons of flavor. If you want it mild it's great and if you want it spicy it's also great. The pad Thai with prawns was visually jaw dropping even in a to go box. They give you the whole prawn and even though it's shell on they devein it. That is great attention to detail. Highly recommend. read more

First impressions and Covid: Masks are required to be worn at all times (both guests and staff) unless seated at your table, however staff were not always observed wearing their masks properly. Water is served in bottles to keep staff from having to touch glasses for refills. They have hand sanitizer available at the front counter as well as a plexiglass barrier to ensure the safety of not the staff and guests. They do sanitize menus after each guests use. Food: We dined in during the lunch hour and ordered from their lunch menu. We started with the pork and shrimp spring rolls. For our entrees, I ordered the mixed vegetables with chicken and my husband ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai. Pork and shrimp spring rolls: They have good flavor but are definitely more pork spring rolls as that is all I could taste. Overall they were good but wouldn't be a must have the next time. Mixed vegetables with chicken: A good balance of chicken and vegetables. The dish overall is a little on the bland side and could use a little seasoning whether it be a little salt or even a smidge of heat. Shrimp Pad Thai: Shrimp and egg were both overcooked. The sauce was very good but a tad on the sweet side if you don't specify what level of spicy you want it to be. If the egg and shrimp were cooked properly, the dish would be perfect. Final thoughts: Would we return here next time we are in town visiting? Probably not. It was just an okay meal and glad we came in during lunch. This used to be Thai koon inside hmart! I was so sad when they left but they told me they just moved locations and I was so excited to keep trying their food!! We ordered a whole bunch of food for take out and when I went inside to pick it up, it was super cute and clean! The woman there was also so kind as to help me bring all the food out to my car. I was amazed at how huge the chicken leg quarters were for such a great price!!! Literally everything we ate was super delicious and they are so accommodating because I asked for no spice for my parents dishes and they were able to do that and for me, I did mild. My dad said their fried rice is the best he's ever had! They also looooveee the spring rolls. My mom loved the crab wontons but I personally wasn't a fan because it was a different kind of wrapper than I'm used to for crab Rangoon. Still tasty, just not what I'm used to. Found this restaurant on Yelp. I placed my order online and it was waiting on a table by the door when i arrived. I ordered spring rolls, pot stickers, and drunken noodles. The spring rolls and sauce were sooooo good. The spring rolls were crisp. The sauce was sweet with a bit of spice. The pot stickers were good. I did NOT care for the sauce that came with them. The sauce tasted like it belonged in a meal and not for dipping. The drunken noodles were just ok. I got chicken and spice level medium. It was not spicy at all. The noodles tasted overcooked. No too busy today. Nice looking place though. I had eaten at Szechuan Garden last week, and it was packed. Wasn't thrilled with the meal, however. Went here today, and have been meaning to check it out for some time. Very light lunch crowd, so I was a little surprised , as the food was a lot better than the former. They start the meal with a free appetizer of the soup of the day, which was delicious! Small bowl of sweet and sour soup with decent heat. Totally cool. We had some pot sticker and Nam Sod, which is very like Larb, but with ground pork. Both were very good. For lunch I had the red curry and my buddy had the beef fried rice. For the curry, their is a 1-4 chile rating, with 4 being Thai hot. I got a three, and was impressed. You don't see to many places that honor the heat, but 3 was making me savor the meal. Nice and hot! I would go here more often if it was closer, and def a better bet than the Chinese place near by. Very well done, and pretty quick service, so lunch is on! read more

New ownership. The owners from Thai Koon Nine in H Mart took over and started in March 2023. We ordered crabmeat fried rice ( my favorite), bbq chicken with sticky rice-the spicy tamarind sauce is soooooo yummy, beef drunken noodles-always god and consistent with large pieces of quality beef, zab chicken wings-spicy flavorful spice rub. They were all delicious. I have been waiting for them to reopen since they closed their stall in December. So excited to be able to get crabmeat fried rice again. read more

So, I was in the mood for some Basil spring rolls. Every where I called to see if they were open, was closed. Until I reached Thai 54. The server stated they closed in 15 mins, however, if I was close by they would take my order. WHAT!? Okay, I stated I would be there in about 10 mins - she said great and see you then. I drove up, they were packing up for the night, but you could see they were awaiting for me to arrive. I walked in and was greeted warmly and confirmed my order. The guy behind the bar, confirmed my order and started to make my rolls. We chatted and he showed me tips on how to make the perfect roll at home. Thai 54 was very impressive! I've been living in the triangle for 6 years now and it's hard to find a quality Thai restaurant. Most places around here are Thai Fusion -- which is not legit. Thai 54 is straight up Thai! I stopped in at 11:30 a.m. for lunch and I was the first customer there. The placed was packed by 12:00 p.m. The price are fair and well-worth it. The lunch deals starts from $9 which is amazing! I had the pad Thai and it was the best that I've had in the area. It was just the perfect balance of sweet,sour, and spicy. I love how you can choose the level of spice. I can't wait to try the other items on the menu! Overall, fantastic customer service; especially for a small team. Yes it's true, this really is the same crew from H Mart cooking their hearts out in their new home!!!! Came for dinner as soon as I found out this is their new spot and man oh man did it hit the spot!! There are just as many Isan style (eastern Thai) dishes here as there are standard fares, but the Isan dishes take the crown hands down. We had the bbq chicken, beef noodle soup, beef drunken noodles, fried pork belly with basil leaves, and the Lao papaya salad. The beef soup is what dreams are made of lol, so tasty!! And the fried pork belly lives up to the hype! The level 2 is average Thai spicy level if you were in Thailand but a level 7-8 in US standards. My tell tale sign of a legit Thai spot is whether they keep their tray of house made chili jars on command and of course they did :-) You are now my #1 Thai spot in the Triangle! The shrimp was not overcooked. The Fine: Tofu green curry was okay. It was thicker than most others, so that may be their style. It had a good fragrance, little sweet, nice basil. It was fine. They followed through on my request for extra spicy. The Bad: Nam Tok beef was just salty. No other flavors came through. The chicken pad see ew was also one note in flavor. We have been here once before but came back recently. The store was empty but luckily we saw people Coming in for Togo orders. I order the bbq chicken with shrimp fried rice, summer rolls and my partner got the red curry. I think I liked the red curry better but I also really liked my dish. My shrimp fried rice had 6 pieces of huge shrimp on top which I loved. I wish my chicken was slightly crispier/had a char flavor but the taste was still really good. By the look of it, I thought it was going to be good when I opened the container. however, I was quickly fooled when I took my first bite. It had absolutely no flavor, and the Thai tea was not good.
