A disappointing restaurant. While my friend and I had great service and the ambiance was good, the food was underwhelming. We split the Baan Siam rolls, which we were able to get with tofu instead of shrimp. The rolls were OK but not anything great. However, the sweet chili sauce tasted like it came out of a jar. For my main, my friend got the salmon and I got the seasonal chicken jungle curry. My friend's salmon did not taste like high-quality salmon and the dish itself was mediocre. While my dish was well-spiced, it lacked good flavor otherwise, the rice could have been cooked more, and the chicken was rubbery. The dishes were also overpriced. There are plenty of better restaurants in the area and Thai restaurants in DC if you are in the mood for either. read more

A friend and I were looking for someplace to have dinner in the Convention Center area, and we came across Baan Siam on Yelp (of course). Glad we did! This was hands down the best khao soi I've had in DC to date. The chicken was perfectly tender, and the soup was spicy (the good kind) and hella flavorful. Even the noodles were great. I'd totally come back for the khao soi alone, which gets five stars in my book. You might be wondering: why the only 4-star rating then? Well, as much as I loved the main course, I have to admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the appetizer or dessert (but perhaps we just didn't choose well?). We shared the chicken tapioca dumplings to kickstart our meal, and ended with the coconut ice cream. The dumplings were interesting: I enjoyed the texture, and the unique take in general. I just wish they'd been less sweet (I was definitely expecting them to be more on the savory side). I felt similarly about the coconut ice-cream; it was a fun dessert (especially because it was served in a half-coconut!), but far too sweet for my taste. I'd probably get the mango and sticky rice instead if I were to go back. Overall, definitely a great spot -- highlights being the khao soi and the variety of appealing items on the menu. ive been here multiple times throughout the years and it never disappoints. any variation of the fried rices here are incredibly flavorful (my fav is the crab which is seasonal!). their khao soi is also one of my favs. and i always end the meal with the coconut ice cream which comes in a shell and is a good mixture of sweet and salty :) read more

I was in Washington DC with a friend and we stumbled upon Baan Siam. Like someone else mentioned in the reviews, I think this restaurant lived up to the expectations of a Thai restaurant in Washington DC but to be honest, the food did not feel or taste authentic. We ordered the Woon Sen noodles and Curry Fried Rice, both of which were average. They needed extra flavor and spice, something that should be of utmost importance in Thai Cuisine. I had to douse my food in the soy sauce and chili oil to get the taste anywhere near the Thai Food I have had in NYC or Miami. Along with this, the price was pretty high and the portions could have been much bigger. The restaurant is very clean and has hints of traditional and modern decor. There is indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a huge bar in the middle with lots of drink options if that is something you are interested in. The fried salmon was a unique dish I had not tried before, but it went well with the spicy green curry and asparagus. This is on the seasonal menu, and I recommend it. The dish comes with two large pieces of salmon. Mango & sticky rice is one of my favorite desserts, and it's not easy to find back where I live; not all Thai restaurants offer it. I ordered catering for a small social gathering (planning for 20 people). The food arrived on time, and it was generally agreed that the food was delicious! We ordered a large mixed platter and mango salad. Items were well seasoned and tasted delicious! The only downsides were that they did not separate meat from vegetarian options on the mixed platter and that the fried tofu could have been more crispy. Also, to my recollection, I have not had mango salad before, and it was a bit sweeter than I would have preferred. Otherwise the restaurant was a pleasure to work with! Tom responded efficiently and quickly to our questions, and they were generally very receptive and easy to work with. Also, the portion sizes were great. Though they don't have your traditional street food noodles (pad Thai, drunken noodles, etc.), they have a wide selection of less commonly known dishes, so it's great for those who want to expand their cultural palate. All so flavorful - just pick whatever protein you're in the mood for, and you can't go wrong whether it's yellow, red, or green curry. - Grilled pork skewers: This sauce is absolutely amazing and the pork is so tender. - Mango sticky rice: Again, this one speaks for itself lol. I also love how they switch things up with seasonal specials! There's always something new and delicious to try. Another pro tip is to order Baan Siam for restaurant week - they have one of THE BEST deals, offering 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 drinks, and 1 dessert for $70. I would recommend making reservations at this popular spot. I could only get one for lunch at 1 pm. It is on Eaters DC's top restaurants to eat at and I understand why. The best dish was the Lotus root salad with shrimp. It was excellent, light but flavorful. The Khao Soi was 2nd best but could have used some more noodles. The coconut chicken soup was really good and had a good punch. We also had a chicken curry that was ok, but not as memorable as the other dishes. this used to be one of me & my GF favorite restaurants in the DMV. We went recently & they've changed the menu to where our favorite things aren't on the menu anymore, it was very disapointing. They had one of the best thai ice cream desserts & replaced it with ice cream with a side of fried ube fries. The grease & the ice cream don't mix at all, just seemed unnecessary. They also removed one of my GF favorite fried rice, & the portions have gotten significantly smaller since when we started going 4 years ago. I understand the economy is not its best, but i don't think rice itself has gotten drastically expensive. i'm deeply saddened. Baan Siam seems to have become a DC staple. The food is good, the prices are reasonable, portion sizes are big, and it's a decent size restaurant that it's not impossible to get a reservation at. I would still make a reservation because this place gets busy and the restaurant is often full. Do pay attention to the number of chili peppers on the menu next to each item because the food can get quite spicy. I like spice, and anything with 1-3 chili peppers is delicious and not overwhelming to me. But the items with 4 peppers are very spicy. read more

The rice was a delicious sweet garlic flavor that would defeat any vampires. Additionally, the rice also had small sautéed garlic bits that were out of this world. Bottom line: all three dishes we had were fantastic! My friend and I had reservations for a weekday evening and ordered an appetizer and two main dishes. The other two plates, Thai vermicelli in chili peanut sauce and Shrimp chili paste fried rice with crispy pork belly, came minutes later. Quick service! It was difficult to decide what was our favorite dish. The appetizer salad tasted fresh and the ingredients - cilantro, chili paste, and scallions - were all well balanced. The crispy lotus root added a nice crunch. The vermicelli and fried rice were bigger in portions than we expected. Maybe it was some of the crispy elements of the dishes - the pork belly and tempura vegetable - that filled us up quicker, but I really wanted to keep eating because it was all so good to taste. Good news for us, though, we were fine with taking them home for leftovers. I would love to come back and even order the same dishes again, but the rest of the menu has enough variety to switch it up with maybe one other dish. I'm a Thai food junkie and Baan Siam definitely gave me my fix. Like others have said, they DON'T have some of the noodle dishes that Thai places are known for, but what dishes they do have are equally delicious, albeit lesser known. Also note that they do NOT make substitutions, so be wary if you have any food allergies. I went on a Thursday night right at opening time - there was no wait for a table and I got my pick of inside or outside. The ambience either way was fantastic, but I chose to sit outside. I appreciated the tall planters that gave a bit of privacy to those eating outside. My server was very attentive and made sure I had what I needed. As for food, I ordered a seasonal special - the crispy pork belly stir-fry with garlic. It was DELICIOUS. Each bite was rich and flavorful, and there was plenty of food on my plate. For $18 at a Thai place in DC no less, that is quite impressive. I'd definitely recommend Baan Siam to those visiting the city for a day and locals alike. read more

Visited Baan Siam with a large group when visiting DC. Even though we were a large group (10+), we were able to be seated promptly and given a beautiful outdoor table with lights. Baan Siam is accessible by public transit and the nearby neighborhood was beautiful to walk through especially in the early afternoon. The food was delicious -- most of our first time have Laotian food. We love the familiar Thai flavors and the unique textures of including fish in curries and the sticky rice sides were very delicious. I loved the presentation of each of the main dishes, and they all looked incredible. In addition, even when menu items specify that they are spicy, they are very tolerable and not overwhelming with spice. So don't be shy to order a spicy entree. I didn't think the dc food scene could fail me but unfortunately on this trip, I experienced disappointment at many turns. I love Thai food and was excited to try this restaurant featuring dishes from across Thailand. I was seated immediately upon my arrival. While I was appreciative, I couldn't help but notice the tables were very close together, particularly given the size of the restaurant. I felt like I was eating dinner with the couple at the table next to me. I ordered the crispy lotus root and grilled shrimp salad, tamarind iced tea, and the khao soi with chicken. Frankly, I didn't really enjoy any of the things I ordered and left the restaurant a little sad. The salad was overdressed and the sauce/dressing was far too concentrated. When my tea arrived, I couldn't even taste it until I cleansed my palate with water. I think the salad had the potential to be great. Either with significantly less dressing, or perhaps served with rice to help balance the overwhelming flavors. I was not a fan of the tamarind iced tea. It was too tangy for my tastes. Obviously, the tea contained tamarind but typically, when I've ordered tamarind tea, the restaurant will make an effort to serve a more balanced beverage. I definitely regret not getting the classic Thai iced tea which is harder to mess up. After two disappointments, I was looking forward to the khao soi, an egg noodle dish in a red chili sauce with chicken and a few vegetables topped with fried noodles. However, I was shocked to find the dish was not even vaguely spicy and was a bit sweet. For this, a simple change to the menu description could have helped me to avoid this sweet curry and I might have had an opportunity to find something I would actually enjoy. While I did not enjoy my food, I will say the restaurant was clean and modern and the staff were kind and efficient. Overall, I had a meh experience at Baan Siam. I left feeling unsatisfied and a little sad. I think this restaurant was too expensive to have everything be a bust (my bill came to $44 before tax and tip). read more

I loved this Thai place. First thing; is this restaurant is on a lot of reviews for best places to eat. I was a bit unsure because sometimes my expectations get the best of me. But I was pleasantly surprised and I really enjoyed my meal here. I ordered a soup and it was delicious and had a good flavor. I loved it my only complaint was that the broth should have been hot; it was warm but I like my soup to be boiling hot. Beside that the meal was quite delicious we ordered the fried calamari and that was so good; the flavors were perfect. I regret not getting two orders of the calamari. i feel as though this curry picture speaks for Baan Siam by itself but I'll still do my civic duty to provide the details - as it gets colder out, the human body needs curry. it's just biology. this khao soi packed the perfect level of spice to leave your mouth tingling. the spice was perfectly matched with the refreshing shallots, pickled cabbage, and lime. - I adored the chewy egg noodles contrasted with the crispy topping (can't really put a name to this crunch) and the chicken thigh was cooked perfectly. as always, if this was dry chicken, I couldn't morally recommend it to anyone - my dining companion loved the thai vermicelli in peanut sauce. pretty much self explanatory with a name like that. tons of ground chicken and little shrimp in the sauce providing a shockingly protein packed dish for a peanut noodle. - certain parts of the place look like a little warehousey/unfinished, maybe due to the size. OK this was the best meal I had while visiting DC and I think about it from time to time now that I'm back on the west coast (lol). So we stopped by in the afternoon after walking miles to get there and were ready for a good meal. They have a really nice patio on the sidewalk so we snagged a shaded spot. The menu is relatively small but lots of delicious looking choices for you to choose from AND some awesome drinks ;). I ordered the frozen lychee and then the Tom Yum soup with shrimp & egg noodles + the spicy-sour soup with shrimp and beef salad to share. To start off, the drink was so refreshing, BUT STRONG! I loved it to bits but had a hard time finishing it so I would recommend sharing if you don't want to load up on drinks before food. The spicy-sour soup was SO good! Definitely more on the sour side (my fav) and spicy! We added a side of sticky rice to this dish and it really topped it off. The Tom Yum soup was amazing and flavorful as well, but slightly sweeter than I would have liked. I, like I mentioned earlier, definitely like my Tom Yum soups on the sour side, but even though it wasn't as expected, I still loved it and finished the whole dang thing! I've visited Baan Siam a few times over the years, including for my birthday a few years ago. They have quick, friendly service, a chill atmosphere, and excellent food. For starters, I recommend the Fák-tohng tohd (fried Asian pumpkin) and Yum râak buua grôp goong yâang (Crispy lotus root & grilled shrimp salad). For entrees, as much as I want to try more of their menu, I always come back to the Khao soi gài dish (Egg noodles, chicken thigh, pickled cabbage, scallions, red onion, Northern Thai chili paste). It's just so good every time with a great balance of sweet and savory flavors and crispy and soft textures. It's a pretty big portion -- enough for leftovers depending on your appetite. For desseert, Baan Siam is the only restaurant I know of in DC that serves Kanom krok (Coconut milk griddle snack) which is an amazing, if rare, Thai dessert. I was first introduced to it at Little Serow (RIP) and I can't get enough of it. They have a surprisingly large beer list with 16 drafts. Resy says they have a happy hour menu (bar only, 5-7pm, Tues-Fri) but I've never tried it and it's not on their website. Highly recommend. read more

I love the fried rice paper, but the inside was rather dry. Def need the dipping sauce. I visited Baan Siam this past Saturday for an early dinner. The place is very nice inside with a cool bar and open kitchen. To start, we got the lotus shrimp salad and one of my friends got the coconut soup. The lotus shrimp salad is definitely worth the hype! It was so good!! My friend who had the soup also stated it was very good. For dinner, I got the pork belly with fried rice. The pork belly was delicious! It was flavored well and perfectly crispy. I also enjoyed the rice. One friend got a chicken curry dish and another a noodle dish (can't remember) but both reported enjoying their meals. For dessert we shared the mango sticky rice and the coconut ice cream. The mango sticky rice was just okay. It actually wasn't really sweet and the flavor was a bit lacking. So i don't really recommend it. However, the coconut ice cream, amazing! It was so good! We loved it and I want that ice cream in a pint! Our server was nice and pleasant but did take a while to get orders. However, she was a bit busy. My only critique is when my friends arrived for our 5pm reservation they were told we had to be out by 6:45. I understand being busy but usually reservations aren't told to be quick. Most places allow reservations a full two hours. It's minor but feeling rushed, especially when you made an early reservation, is a bit off putting. Then, I guess we went over since we got dessert and the hostess came to us at 6:55 saying they needed the table in five minutes. She was nice about it but still just not ideal. This restaurant is so amazing! It's a Thai restaurant but not exactly like those Thai places I have tried before. It has something special, though I can't explicitly figure out how. It just feels very unique and everything we tried here was so delicious. For appetizer, the beed jerky is a must-have as you probably won't find this dish in many other Thai restaurants. In the main dish menu, my colleagues said the lemon grass chicken wrapped in green leaves is the most popular one and truly it tasted great. However, I dared to try the most spicy dish in the menu which is also lemon grass chicken (right below the green leaves one on the menu) as it's the only dish with four hot pepper signs in the menu. The waitress confirmed with me again when I ordered and emphasized that this is Thai spicy and whether I really wanted. I survived and enjoyed! If the habanero pepper's spicy score is 10, I would give the spicy level of this dish a score of 7. read more

I had been wanting to come here since I had their khao soi gai at the Thai Festival on the mall. It was a super hot day and still ended this spicy meal. We were told a one hour wait for a table for 3 so decided to sit at the bar which was not overly crowded. We all thought our meals were very tasty. I got the khao soi goi again.
