I went to Pappe in DC for happy hour with a friend and had such a great time. I originally wanted to go because I saw they had a $24 butter chicken meal deal that comes with a glass of wine or beer, and it definitely did not disappoint from 5-7. The butter chicken was AMAZING -- super flavorful, rich, and honestly a really generous portion. It was easily enough to have leftovers for lunch the next day, which made the deal even better. During happy hour they also have $3, $8, and $10 bites, and $10 margaritas, which is such a great value. I tried one of the $3 bites and it was so flavorful and well done. Honestly sooooo good! It was the vegetable Samosa and it's soooo good! The whole experience was great and the food had so much flavor. This was my first time coming here, but it definitely won't be my last. A true gem on 14th street! My dining experience here was nothing short of magical. There is something special about a restaurant whose decor tells a story of culture and beauty. This place brings South Asian culture to DC and the evidence of that is the beautiful black and white portrait collections with DC sprinkled throughout it. Then, as soon as you sit at the table, the wait staff is attentive to your needs and uses such care to keep your water glass refilled and your table cleared between meals. Thank you! Drinks: we were there for the happy hour so we both wanted to try something special. I ordered the Chai espresso martini and my boyfriend ordered the Pili margarita. The Chai espresso martini was GOLDEN! If this drink were to go up for cocktail of the year, it would come out on top. Might I say that chai is something that you can mess up and I've had encounters where it was watered down, not the case here. I tasted the fresh and real chai and the richly brewed espresso. This drink wasn't just a martini, it warranted deep conversation with each sip. My boyfriend raved about his Pili margarita and talked about how excellent it was to taste fresh mangoes, a burst of citrus, and spiciness. A beautiful culinary combination Safe to say that both drinks were our favs!!! I also had a glass of their white wine and it was dry and refreshing. Well done! Food: we ordered several dishes from the happy hour menu. Please note that they aren't shy of providing excellent portions. Manchurian wings: a star dish! The fry on the wings were perfect but the seasoning puts this dish over the top. Highly recommended! Vegetable samosa: flaky dough with the most delectable sautéed vegetables. You'd definitely want to try a few of these! Gobi manchurian: a beautiful dish for non-meat eaters and meat eaters. Similarly to the wings, these cauliflowers were perfectly fried and seasoned to perfection. Actually, at one point, I thought that I was eating a meat dish because it was so tender and juicy inside. Please don't miss ordering these! Spicy chicken tikka: the dish that makes you ask "what spices are in this? They're EXCELLENT!" Such a juicy and tender cut with the perfect blend of flavors. Order, order, order! I think it's safe to say that we enjoyed ALL of our selections and appreciated the modern twist on Indian food classics. They didn't stray too far from the beauty of these dishes but added just enough personality to win you over. Lastly, we ordered dessert! We originally went with their bread pudding which came with cardamom ice cream but the amazing host, Dave, surprised us with their special Gulab jamun. The cardamom ice cream was AHHH-MAY-ZIN (spelled how I need you to say it!) it was amazing! But let's get into this bread pudding. I have so many questions: who is the pastry chef? I got an e-mail from Pappe inviting me to their soft opening brunch which entails all food items on the house, drinks and tip to be paid for. Reservations were made through e-mail via a Google Spreadsheet which was super confusing, but I was still able to get the reservation for the time I wanted! So I gathered the troops and decided to head over. My friend and I got the bottomless Moet & Champagne deal, while my other friend just got 2 spicy Pili margaritas. My other friend did not partake in the bottomless drinks option. Which is definitely a plus when going to bottomless brunch in case not all participants want that option. As I've mentioned in my previous review, the drinks are mediocre while the food items are amazing as always! I got the vegetarian thali and my previous sentiments still stand - the daal is quite literally my favorite. It had the perfect smokeyness to daal ratio. I'm not even a fan of daal! I ordered their take on a margarita, but it was a bit too spicy for me. The bartender was kind enough to make me a different drink, and I ended up trying their Moscow Mule, which was flavorful and delicious. Went here with a group for a birthday celebration, and we overall had a good time! Staff seemed a little unprepared despite our res time, but were friendly in every interaction. I really loved this cocktail that had mezcal, ginger something, (goan something) that I was surprised to see on the menu. I got the lamb biryani, which came with a cute bread hat (that they strangely cut open table side) with a side of raita. It was a lot of food, definitely the best deal on the menu for how much lamb and rice you got. I wished I got more raita (and that they kept the goan pilau on the menu but that's okay) but it was all really good. I wasn't able to grab pictures because there were so much food around our table, but we tried it out almost all of the Indian sodas and I got my mango lassi. Our take-out was prepped with great attention and care, even down to a garnish of cilantro for some freshness. The chicken was charr grilled with a crust that still came through and added a layer of depth from simmering in their creamy sauce. The spices were visible which is a great indication of a custom individual spice blend. Onions were thinly sliced and gave the dish a great sweetness that rounded out the sauce. Rice was perfectly cooked with a slight fragrance from the cumin. Samosas are a bit on the flatter side but still well-filled. The chutneys are incredibly flavorful, which offers a fresh and tangy bite if you want to alternate between tamarind or their green sauce. This is truly one of the best dining spots in Logan Circle. Not only is the food fantastic, but the service is also great as well. We ventured here on a Tuesday evening and had an amazing time in the cool and welcoming environment just off of the hot summer street. What was especially exciting about this evening was we discovered their happy hour was until 7 pm and was not just served at the bar but also all dining tables. We started with the vegetable samosas that were very good. They came with a side sauce for dipping that paired so well. We also ordered the butter chicken, which came with a side of rice, naan, and a beer. We additionally ordered a few cocktails, and the entire bill was $55 (before tip)! It had date, butter, timbre, chutney, toasted cardamom caramel which had its own Indian fusion mixed in. It was delicious. They also offer a Moet And Chandon bottom of course for $35 pet person. And also a few mocktails we tried, the 'Abase' was delicious with pomegranate and lychee. For appetizers, we had the Aloo tikki chaat and we all agreed this was a five star dish and elevated street food that completely wowed us. This is a must order. Probably one of the best things weve had since the beginning of the year. The vegetables samosas were packed with flavor and beautifully presented. Then for our main course we decided on the build your own own thali which are little dishes a traditional South Asian round platter, usually metal (steel, copper, brass), used to serve a complete, balanced meal with many small dishes like curries. We chose butter chicken, and lamb Taar gosht along with garlic naan along with smoked daal and Chana masala. Along with the wild and wonderful mushroom biryani, which came with caramelized onions and basmati rice. Both blew us away. And last we got the crmeme brûlée mixed with house blend chai. This is a GREAT example of how you don't need to be perfect to be a great restaurant! This was my first time coming here, just flew into Baltimore from Dallas and wanted to try some local foods. It was about a 15-20 min walk from my hotel (Grand Hyatt) and right when we sat down we were greeted. We got cold still water, and ordered two cocktails and a mussels appetizer. The sauce in the mussels were absolutely delicious and the naan was soft and buttery. When we ordered the entrees, it came out in a reasonable amount of time. I ordered the tellicherry hanger steak and my friend had the lamb taar gosht. The lamb was absolutely delicious however I did notice a small, live caterpillar on my steak's side salad. I quietly notified an employee and had it remade and the owner/manager took it off the bill and offered another dish on the house. When it came out again, the salad was on the side, which I didn't quite care for, and I ate all the meat. However there was another small caterpillar on the salad but I did not eat any of it and quietly notified the manager who then decided to comp the whole meal and throw in another free drink for me and my friend. I told him that was completely unnecessary as I understand the razor thin margins restaurants have. But he insisted anyways. THIS IS HOW YOU MANAGE AN ESTABLISHMENT. Met up with a friend here for their happy hour. We didn't have reservations, but it was pretty empty when we arrived, so we were sat right away. I was greeted immediately upon entry, which was nice. I love the decor in the restaurant; it's so chic and modern - with the dim lighting, this would also be a cute spot for a date night. Their happy hour menu has a good selection and is actually decently priced. The only thing that was disappointing was they were out of the lamb samosas for the evening, but aside from that, everything else went smoothly. An amazing dining experience truly summarizes my experience at Pappe! It was my friends and my first time but definitely won't be the last. An intimate space with beautiful decor, the staff was welcoming from the minute we walked in. We snagged seats at the bar and decided to try a few different options from the happy hour menu. For drinks we had the sangree-uh and the mango margaritas (my fav). Food also did not disappoint. I definitely recommend trying the lamb ribs which are so flavorful and cooked to perfection. Located in a trendy area of DC we arrived early and were able to select our own seats. I would say 3.5 stars if I could. INCREDIBLY slow service - to the point where the wait staff was just standing talking among themselves instead of helping customers. Cute inside, and packed for restaurant week. The food was good but not incredible. Not as good as rasika and definitely not traditional Indian food. For apps - both the paneer achari and the chaat were decent but not something I'd order again. Both daals were good, but the daal makhani was a little watery compared to how it is supposed to be prepared. I was very underwhelmed by the entrees and slightly disappointed in both the chicken tikka masala and the saag paneer. The saag had little to no flavor and the chicken was better but the sauce again was on the more watery side. I've def had way better versions of this dish elsewhere. Finally, the desserts both kheer and the cake were very good - dare I say better than some of the other dishes. I really loved the saffron kheer. Would I be back? Second time at Pappe and finally getting around to writing a review. For starters, Pappe is beautiful with gorgeous drapes and dim lighting, its perfect for a date night. This time around, my friend and I ordered the Naan Flight, Butter Chicken and Lamb Rogan Josh. I raved about the naan flight but this time, I was underwhelmed. It came with plain, an herby variety and an olive paneer naan. Really was expecting it to come with at least garlic naan but I guess not. The herb naan was not great. The rosemary overpowered the naan and the currys we ordered so much, we ended up just picking most of them off. The raitia and chutneys were the highlight more than than the naan itself so that was a little disappointing. For our entrees, the Butter Chicken stole the show while the Lamb Rogan Josh fell a little flat. They were both delicious but the lamb sauce could have been more flavorful while the lamb itself was perfectly tender and moist. Still thinking about if I'll be back or not, maybe it's time to explore other Indian options in the city, especially if they are at a lower price point. When the bartender learned how unhappy my wife was, she brought an extra dish, the chicken malai, which I thought was a very sweet thing to do, so I added an extra tip on top of the 20% gratuity automatically charged -- except then I noticed that we had just been cgharged for an extra dish. I think for the cost, you can find curries just as good and cheaper in the city. That being said, I would definitely go back still and I'm glad I finally tried it. Pappe is a delicious, authentic Indian restaurant in Logan Circle that is packed with flavor in each bite. The restaurant is clean, trendy, and has a great mix of Bollywood/Punjabi hits always playing in the background :) I adored the dim lighting and lively atmosphere. I went for Happy Hour and loved each dish I had. My absolute favorites were the Spicy Chicken Tikka (a spicy food lover's dream!) and Vegetable Samosa. The Onion Bhajia and Prawn Koliwala were tasty and milder, which made them a good balance between each item. The Cardamom Gimlet and Sanjay's Old Fashioned had a unique Indian twist on classic cocktails. Both paired exceptionally well with the spices in each of the dishes. Super lucky to have been able to visit here during both happy hour and restaurant week. Happy hour- French 75! Omg! I loved this cocktail. Refreshing and well balanced. For only $6- you can't beat it. Dinner- Restaurant Week menu (tons of choices). Here's what I ordered: App: Crab Pav- a little Indian crab cake sandwich! Soft and flaky. Entree: Shrimp Malabar- shrimp in a coconut and curry sauce. Lots of shrimp way more than expected. I ate this like a soup (without rice) and it was very filling. Not too spicy (hot), but still tons of flavor and a mild/medium heat. Sides: Palak Paneer and Yellow Dal- both good, but I was already stuffed off the previous two items. I ate these with rice. Did not order naan (glad I didn't because that would've been way too much food). Dessert: Saffron Kheer (rice pudding). Not too much saffron flavor, but not bad. Been wanting to try this unassuming spot for a long time! Finally grabbed some lunch here and it did not disappoint! Food here is authentic, and the menu is friendly to dietary restrictions, labeling those which are gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, etc. I also love the vibe inside. It's relatively small, so I'd recommend for an intimate date night. The decor is cozy and cultural, it really made me feel like I was tucked away. I didn't get to take pictures of everything I tried, but service was friendly and quick, the food was tasty and authentic, and the vibes were really cool - not what you expect on the loud and busy 14th street!! read more
