Extremely underrated restaurant in Chinatown. Ran into this place by accident while looking for a place to eat for lunch. The service is very good and our server gave awesome recommendations. When I visited DC, my friend immediately was like: you have to go to Baan Siam. And she was RIGHT. I love Thai food, but Baan Siam offers something different from what you see from usual Thai restaurants. I'm not sure which part of Thailand my dish was from, but I love her and really loved the exposure to some other traditional dishes from regions of Thailand that might not usually be represented on a menu. I got the stir fried glass noodles with chicken and shrimp, which was just the right amount of spicy for me to handle. It was so well flavored without being too salty, and there was so much going on in each bite-- it was unlike anything I've had before. Like kind of sour but also slightly sweet, and tied together so nicely. Thai iced tea was also strong in flavor. The restaurant itself is also beautiful and had such a lovely ambience. Been here a few times now, forewarning that spicy is actually quite spicy! They are able to adjust only certain dishes for spice level. I've gotten: Khao soi with chicken (love) Northern Thai mixed curry with chicken (love) Spicy lemongrass chicken (salty side but still good) Shrimp chili paste with crispy pork belly (very heavy since it's fried rice and fried pork) Coconut milk griddle snack (was not bad, could try something else) Mango and sticky rice (loveeee it!!) Servers here have always been very knowledgeable, attentive and one even helped us with splitting a complicated bill! This might've been some of my favorite Thai food I've had before! I came on a Sunday evening with a group of 6 at around 5:30. There probably wouldn't have been a wait since a few tables were still empty but we had reservations just in case. We shared a few dishes: - tapioca chicken dumplings - beef salad - northern style pork curry - southern style beef curry - lemongrass chicken - tom yum noodles - chili peanut noodles Everything was exceptional but the highlights among these dishes had to be the northern style pork curry, beef salad, and chili peanut noodles! Stopped in to grab a quick bite to eat and mocktail before meeting up with a friend for a show at the Howard Theater. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how warm and welcoming this restaurant is. Easily found a space to sit at the bar which has plenty of seating. Happy hour is from 5-7pm Tuesday - Friday and the menu offers up tasty eats and drinks. I tried the Thai-style fried chicken wings and when I visited I was participating in "Dry January" so the bartender was so gracious enough to make a lychee mocktail that was absolutely delicious and so pretty. The food here was amazing! I had always wanted to try the restaurant since I had heard such great reviews, and I wasn't disappointed! This is a more upscale Thai restaurant so they do not have what you typically would see like Pad Thai or Pad Seew. But we still thoroughly enjoyed our food and got our Thai food cravings satisfied. The grilled branzino is a must get when you come to this restaurant. There is such big chunks of fish meat along with refreshing vegetables. It does come with a lot of ginger so if you are not a fan of ginger, I would steer clear of this dish. The fried rice was amazing and had large shrimp pieces in it. I will say though, the noodle dish and curry were a bit on the salty side. The curry, however, pairs nicely with the side of rice it comes with. The noodles were extremely spicy as well. Not pictured, we got the sweet and sour soup as well. However, I would pass on this as it was too heavy on the fish sauce and was way too salty. We also got some cocktails that were refreshing, sweet, and delicious. They were also beautifully presented. The service was also good! I met a friend here for dinner tonight and it was a good experience. They had some great seasonal specials and Thai classics. I got the seasonal crab fried rice. It was a bit spicier than I thought it would be but very yummy. I also got some Thai ice cream and I really loved the bowl it game in. It was made of rice flour and was tasty. The food also came out extremely quickly. Less than 10 minutes from when we ordered. Very impressive! The waitstaff was also very nice and checked on us a few times. KenScale: 8.0/10 Visit: December 2023 As lovers of Thai food, my wife Jun and I are constantly in the quest for discovering awesome Thai restaurants. While we frequently ate at Thai Chef in Rockville nearby where we live, is there a go-to Thai restaurant in DC? A few months after we moved to the DC metro area in 2021, we visited Baan Siam in the Mt. Vernon Triangle area. It was a pretty solid meal but I think in retrospect we were pretty tired from a long drive to the restaurant on a Friday evening with huge rush-hour traffic so the restaurant somehow fell off our radar. Last month, I wanted to visit the restaurant again as we were due for some Thai food. Our second visit to Baan Siam in early Saturday evening on a more relaxed schedule following our trip to National Gallery of Art was more memorable. The food from the female chef Jeeraporn "P'Boom" Poksupthong is not afraid to showcase the Northern Thai region's culinary tradition. Many of the dishes may look somewhat familiar in concept at other Thai joints, but you wouldn't find the high level of execution from Baan Siam. For a successful meal at the restaurant, I would recommend looking over seasonal specials where we picked two of the four dishes we shared together. Jun was very appreciative of the spicy-sweet calamari with its wonderful mix of spicy and sweet chili sauce flavor that was quite appetizing, which also applies to the description of crispy lotus root and grilled shrimp salad. One dish that we frequently order at a Thai restaurant to determine its quality is the beloved khao soi with egg noodles and chicken. While we wished Baan Siam had a bit more chili paste-based broth, it was nevertheless delicious with deceptively spicy kick. From the seasonal specials section, we also picked basil fried rice with smoked duck which turned out to be a wise choice as we really enjoyed the way fried rice worked together with duck in chili garlic sauce to reveal an addictively rich dish. If this dish is still on the menu on your visit, I highly recommend you order it. Getting a reservation at Baan Siam wouldn't be too difficult given the sizable dining room, but you would still be wise to book in advance for prime-time reservations (the restaurant's dining area was nearly packed during our early evening visit). There is a full bar with a diverse menu of beers, cocktails (many of them using Southeast Asian ingredients) and wines that you can order to complement the meal. After our revisit, we both agreed that we wished the restaurant were a little closer to our home (the restaurant also offers pick-ups and delivery but our home is outside the delivery zone) so we could visit more often and try other dishes from its expansive menu. In any event, now we know where to get our fix for Thai food when we are in DC. Baan Siam is one of those restaurants where it is extremely difficult to get a bad meal and we look forward to visiting it again in the near future. read more

Baan Siam specializes in Northern Thai cuisine, so the menu is a little different from the usual Thai spots. Highly recommend the Khao Soi: the curry-to-coconut ratio is perfect, the is a lime touch, and the chicken is super tender. We landed with Baan Siam who immediately sat us for lunch and we had a private dining experience outside. Our server was very nice and informative. We stopped by here on a day trip to D.C. This came up on an eater list. The restaurant was huge - unlike any Thai restaurants in NYC. The price was also very reasonable. It's kind of crazy how much more expensive dining is in NYC. The service was attentive. The food was delicious. It was a different style of Thai food so pad see ew, pad thai were not on the menu. We enjoyed the pork skewers. The golden fried pockets were good, but missing flavor. The Khao Soi was not the best I've had. The garlic rice with fried pork on top as well as the noodles with the fried pork on top were super tasty. Overall, great thai spot in D.C. Reasonably priced. Had my birthday dinner at Baan Siam. The restaurant had a nice ambiance with modern Asian decor. We were seated quickly and service was great. Waitress was friendly and prices were reasonable. I highly recommend the frozen lychee drink if you like lychee. It came out before my entree and was soooo good I was tempted to finish it before my meal. I had a spicy shrimp dish with glass noodles and it was incredible! Be prepare to feel the heat if you ordered anything Thai spicy! Ive had this place on my yelp list for quite some time and we were looking for last min dinner options so this because our choice for pick up! I absolutely plan to return for a dine in experience so this is specifically for our meals we picked up. Our order was ready within 20-25 min and was readily available as soon as I walked through the door. The place was buzzing, looked like a full house. We ordered the Shrimp-Chili-Paste Fried Rice with Crispy Pork Belly, the Thai-Style Deep-Fried Chicken Wings, and the Egg noodles with crispy pork belly. We started off with the wings, they were fried pretty hard almost too hard but were still as delicious as we had expected. Both the fried rice and egg noodle dishes had a nice spicy bite to them and were bursting with flavor. The crispy pork belly in the egg noodles were much more tougher than we had liked but it did not significantly takeaway from our overall enjoyment of the dish. Went here on a Saturday evening! We were able to make a reservation the day of for 8pm for 2 people. The servings are BIG so we ended up sharing the shrimp fried rice. It was outstanding! They gave us 6 large jump shrimp and the flavor of the dish was outstanding! Very fulfilling not salty or spicy. We also had the chicken satay for an appetizer and they gave us 6 skewers! Let's talk about it! I was very impressed with my experience at Baan Siam that I went two days in a row. The first day I ordered Thai Tea and and the Tom Yum Fried Rice. The Thai Tea was absolutely perfect, not too sweet with bold flavors. The Tom Yum Shrimp Fried Rice was definitely YUM! Hands down one of my favorite dishes in the District. It tasted like Tom Yum, but was not over powering but rather well balanced. All the food came out very quickly, with fast and attentive service. read more

Absolutely amazing restaurant. Upon arrival, the guy at the bar was on point with water and the menu. Never skipped a beat. Taking order for drinks, for food, refill, and check. Everything is fantastic. The atmosphere is great. This place is pretty big, but it gets busy. I arrived at 5 pm to beat crowds, and the crowds were there 20 minutes later. I planned at eating at the bar, but found out there were no tables anyway. So, by all means, make a reservation. My only thing is that space all around the bar is tight. Chairs right next to each other, good for meeting, but if you are with someone, the next person over is with you too, LOL. Flavors and portions were perfect. I'm always up for trying something new. Due to an allergy I had to avoid all Thai food. Fun fact, you can outgrow your allergies, and consequently you can become allergic at any time in you life. But since I outgrew my allergy to peanuts, and everyone I was with were coming here, I was up for it. Since I was new to the whole Thai food scene, I had to have some coaching on the menu. I had no idea what I was in for. There was a lot of food on the table to start for sharing. The table went with Chicken Tapioca Dumplings, Fried Asian Pumpkin, and Golden-fried Pockets. Since we were sharing, I only tried two of the three. Pesky allergy to shrimp still lingers over me. The dumplings were...interesting. The texture to me, was a bit off, but I had to go back a few times for a nibble. The Asian pumpkin, delightful. I have had it before so I knew I was going to enjoy it a lot. While we noshed on the appetizer and waited for our main courses to arrive I was able to take in the place. It is very inviting, and somewhat intimate. Wide area which is dimly lit, can be a bit noisy, but it felt warm in here. We were sat within viewing distance of the kitchen, so we got to see all the magic being made. For my main course, I had to lean on that coaching a bit. Both from the table and from the staff. Being that I had never had this type of food before, I was unsure of the heat level. The staff for sure was able to point me in the right direction. Which, was a bit more spice than what I am used to. I went with the Stir-fried Basil with Tofu & Green Beans. I stirred clear of just about a lot of the items on the menu that dealt with shrimp. I know, I could ask for those dishes without the shrimp part, but I wanted to enjoy a dish that was complete. I paired this with a side of white rice. When I first bit into this dish, I knew that I was missing out on a whole cuisine for far too long. Even though there was so much heat to this, at the lower level, I was not used to that. The heat hit me but did not stop me. This meal not only satisfied, but freed up my sinuses in a way I have never felt. I had tears coming down my face and somehow one of the peppers went upward instead of down. The burning sensation from it all was immense, but I could not stop myself. I championed through and finished the meal. As a reward, the table went for the sweets. We had a sampling when it came to that as well. We got Coconut Milk Griddle Snack, Mango & Sticky Rice (which is a seasonal item), and Coconut Ice Cream. I was near compacity when this arrived, but I knew I had to cool down my palate as my eyes still watered. All I nibbled on at the end of the meal was the Mango & Sticky Rice. It was the perfect mix of sweet and cool. It simmered my palate and was a great end to a great first time experience meal. The staff here were impeccable. Went above and beyond in terms of customer service. Also being in view of the kitchen provided some entertainment to see them assemble the dishes. read more

I was happy with all the food and drinks I tried here. I also liked that eating here didn't break the bank. It should be noted that they don't offer Pad Thai or Drunken Noodles on their menu as most traditional Thai restaurants do. Rather, the menu at Baan Siam is more curry and spice based. The A Smokey Old Poe cocktail was strong but delicious, and the Lychee Martini was dangerously sweet and tasty. I love mango so I was excited to try the Green Mango Salad. The salad was flavorful, and I loved the mix of sweet and savory in the dish. The Thai Vermicelli in Chili Peanut Sauce was tasty. The Chicken Red Curry with Chayote was well made, and the curry was packed with flavor. A good spot for a dinner with friends, family, or even a date. First, get a reservation - you won't be disappointed! If you have a small party (one or two) you can probably get a seat at the bar, but the place was packed during my last visit. I'm sure the wait was crazy, too, since there were tons of people milling about the front door. Both times I've been I have had excellent, thoughtful service. The most recent was with a bartender who took tons of time to answer questions around the bar-top. He never rushed people but still had time for each customer, it was a treat to watch. I don't think you should visit without getting the Pineapple Chicken appetizer - it's fun and fresh. A different take on a normal Thai appetizer. Such delicious food! I'm a huge fan of Thai food but Baan Siam has some dishes I haven't seen in other Thai restaurants before. We started out with the papaya salad which was so light and refreshing. For the entree I got the shrimp chili paste fried rice and got fried chicken to replace the pork belly that normally comes with it. It was amazing! The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and the rice was so good with a good spice to it. I tried my friends red curry as well which was also delicious.
