    No frills here but some of the sweetest aunties cooking up some great grub. Great prices for the taste and serving sizes. Counter order and mostly take out as there are only 3 small tables, still good if you need to dine in. I went to try the Bahn Mi which I did enjoy . The bread was really crusty just the way I like it . I decided to get the chicken and rice special and it was exceptional. I'd go back fot this hot delicious meal again. At only $8 it was a steal. Lots of Vietnamese treats, cakes and candies available. The ladies cooking and at the counter very nice and helpful ,letting me know what was in the (new to me ) items they offer.

    Classic spot in brooklyn for the best banh mi! First tine trying their other prepared Vietnamese appetizers & desserts. - Pate Thit Nguoi (Classic Banh Mi) - good filling and bread ratio. Bread stays nice and crusty on the outside but soft and pillowy on the inside. I always ask for it spicy (w jalapenos) - Banh Beo (steamed rice cakes topped with shrimp and mungbean paste served with fish sauce) - the texture is more mushy and less bouncy than the ones I prefer but it's not common to see these in NYC. - Pandan Honeycomb Cake - good pandan flavor, bouncy and great texture - Layered Pandan & Mungbean Cake - on the sweeter and mushy side than I prefer. Lots of mungbean filling

    This spot was always hyped up so finally got to try! Got the #1, now $8. Def one of the better bahn mi spots - though lacking some ingredients, flavors are on par, and has a nice toasty bread

    Ba Xuyen specializes in making what is easily the best banh mi I've ever had. My dad and I both ordered #1 on their menu. This consisted of pork three ways: a savory pork pâté, thinly sliced deli pork, and chunks of cold, juicy, mouthwatering roast pork, with tendons, aspic, and all. Balancing the pork out perfectly was a sweet daikon/carrot slaw, fresh sprigs of cilantro, and spears of mini cucumber- all drizzled with a subtly tangy and spicy red sauce. We opted for the "mild" spice level, so I'm sure this sauce packs more heat if you go for "spicy." All of this goodness was heaped onto a perfectly toasted baguette. In addition to their banh mi, this place has so many more intriguing Vietnamese foods to choose from, piled on shelves and waiting in cold and hot storage cases. Next time I'm here, I definitely want to try out some of the dumplings, rice balls, and desserts that I saw in the case to the right of the store. Regarding seating, there are 4 tables in the front of the store where you can stop to eat, but people mostly take their food to go. Inside it's clean and comfortable, and the ladies behind the counter are very friendly and helpful. Remember, cash only!

    We were in the area, so we walked into Ba Xuyen because we were curious. Ordered the #1 Pate Ham BBQ pork Bahn Mi ($8), sticky rice ball ($2), and this shrimp over rice cake dish. The bahn mi did not have much filling compared to ones I normally get elsewhere, and it was rather bland. Overall, what we ordered tasted underwhelming, but at a very affordable price. The staff was nice and knew how to speak a few dialects -- Cantonese, Taishanese, Mando, English, and Vietnamese. This place is also cash only.

    Missing viet food and friend gave a rec for here. Cash only store with a decent amount of options. Ladies in the front were super nice. I got the #1 sandwich which is the classic banh mi. Bread was super crispy. And it was a decent size. Can't wait to come back and try other options!

    **CASH ONLY** Best bahn mi in NYC? Not sure about that, but it's really damn good and at the right price. Got the #1 (pate ham bbq, pork roll), as well as a pandan honeycomb cake, which was also fire. The bread they use for their bahn mi is incredible. Limited indoor seating.

    Came here yesterday cause I was craving viet sandwich and forgot to call ahead but the ladies here are still as efficient as ever. Got #1 for me and a friend and he ordered iced coffee as well. Sadly I don't drink coffee but they have shakes and everything here that I would be trying next time. Sandwich is just as good as I remember prices have increased a little but still so reasonable for the neighborhood.

    Still one of my favorite places to get banh mi! Affordable and delicious. My favorite is the sardine banh mi, it's really delicious. This time I tried some of their desserts. The coffee jelly ($2.50) used to be my favorite but maybe my taste buds changed over time, it's not hitting the same anymore. Instead, the banh da lon (layered pandan jelly with mungbeans) was quite delicious! I'll get that again next time.

    I had Ba Xuyen bookmarked for a while, and I'm so glad I finally got to try it! I ordered the #1 Banh Mi and a black coffee. The banh mi was fantastic--definitely better than the ones I've had in Brooklyn. The bread was perfectly crusty, and the filling was flavorful and well-balanced. As for the coffee, it was either way too strong or just in desperate need of some milk. Safe to say, I probably won't be ordering the coffee again next time. A funny moment: the lady taking orders switched to speaking Chinese when she saw I was of Asian descent, which caught me completely off guard. I ended up ordering in Cantonese, and it gave me a good laugh! The setup of the shop is a bit unusual. There are refrigerated foods and grab-and-go options off to the side, which I didn't even notice until after I'd already ordered my sandwich. They also had a little toaster oven with spring rolls that looked tempting! All in all, I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again. Great spot!

    It was a Brooklyn Day with IKEA & food and I was really excited to try Ba Xuyen after hearing about these no-frills secret Banh Mi shops in Sunset Park Brooklyn. We got there around 2pm and it definitely had that "timeless" NYC feel of practicality and little update since it opened. But the actually, very wide shop / restaurant was organized and clean. Assuming that they had left over plexi (counter to ceiling) from pandemic times, which made it feel a bit like a bank or money exchange counter. There's about 4 small tables up front. About 6 local uncles/grandpas where parked to the left chatting away, sipping tea & coffee. A latinx couple was just finishing their sandwiches & leaving. The ladies were very nice and fluent in Cantonese, English, and assuming a Vietnamese dialect, also probably Mandarin. Everything is made-to-order right at the counter. Cookies, pastries, & Vietnamese snacks (glutinous flour & sticky rice items) were displayed on a table in front of the counter. Shelves on the side had a few prepared Savory tapioca cakes & cold noodle items, there was a toaster over with spring rolls (nothing special), bags of seasoned nut & cracker mixes. I ordered the $8.00 #8 lemongrass grilled pork & friend ordered #1. Split a hot Vietnamese Coffee with friend. The sandwich is a medium-smallish size (compared to ones in Manhattan). The bread was the best part of the sandwich unfortunately. It's assuming what a French baguette should look like - toast and light crisp on the outside. Soft with definitely a lard/butter feel in the crumb. And they press in the insides expertly fit the fillings in. I apparently prefer the "safe version" grilled lemongrass meats (actually the char sui bbq glazed ground pork that few places have) & unfortunately the "grilled pork" here wasn't very flavorful, a bit tough / reheated. The slaw was fresh & there was plenty of cucumber & stemmed cilantro. The sandwich also had pate with the meat, which was okay, gave some moisture to everything. Overall not a fan of pate texture. Friend's #1 Original was also disappointing. There were just 1-2 pieces of the deli meats and thin slice of pate. It might have been that we came on a Sunday afternoon, but still - it was underwhelming. The Vietnamese Coffee tasted a but burnt. Since I don't drink a lot if coffee, I don't have much to compare it to - but Do know that a good brew probably shouldn't taste like that. It wasn't too sweet and a medium color. I added sugar to it later and it was actually better the next day - maybe the sugar covered it up. There was a steady stream of customers (local Chinese and young non-Asians); glad that many appreciate the shop (cross generational, cross gentrification); however I was disappointed. The ladies that work there were lovely though - yelling the equivalent of "pretty hermosa! your sandwich is ready!" Which is pretty standard to bodega workers endearingly calling you seniorita or mami. Bring wet wipes to clean the front tables if you're dining in, crumbs & slaw get on them easily - with the high turnover. ** Noting that I found short white hair-like threads in my slaw but it's the baby roots from the carrot or daikon. Appreciate that it's hand-grated.

    This place was AMAZING. This was maybe my third or fourth visit. Found so many goodies!!! Got all that in the picture plus two packs of rice cracker things for $33! Cash only, but worth it. The lady was super nice!

    Another cheap eat rec in 8 Avenue, Brooklyn. Ba Xuyên is a neighborhood favorite for affordable and homey vietnamese food. The shop is operated by some vietnamese aunties, serving a variety of banh mi, authentic street snacks and fruit shakes. I've already been there at least three times whenever I'm craving for banh mi or feeling broke. *Banh Mi Pate Thit Nguoi (Combination #1) Banh mi is priced up to $8 in good portion size and hearty fillings. Every banh mi has a base of cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots and green pepper. My go-to banh mi order is the bestselling combination #1. It has ham, pork, pork teriyaki & BBQ with paté and butter. It is so filling that I can get two meals out of it. *Jackfruit Shake I can't leave this place without getting their milkshake. They blend actual fruits into the shakes, giving it a natural and sweet flavor. They have tropical fruit flavors like lychee, taro, papaya and durian. I heard good things about their avocado shake, but I always stick to my favorite jackfruit shake.

On that first day Joe and I talked about the great food of NY; most of it gone but not forgotten by those who were of the time. We both lamented the lose of the legendary Zito's bakery on Bleecker. I can't tell you how long it had been since I'd ran into someone who even remembered Zito's much less was intimate with the place. I knew I was home. This was well over a decade ago. I won't go into specific things on Joe's menu that are worth trying because quite literally... everything is amazing. It just is! Soul satisfying beyond my ability to do justice to. I'd also like to throw out as an example of the humanity of the joint and it's capt. Joe... Joe treats his employees with respect, R E S P E C T as Aretha belted, dignity and the aforementioned humanity which is beautiful and virtually non-existent these days as far as I can see... and you can taste it in his food. That's just a big-ass Right On! Finally I like to say two or three things: First that as I initially identified myself as "used to being a regular" as and this is by no means a boo-hoo thing simply a fact... I fell pretty ill for a while and am just now beginning my reentry into the world. And as a matter of fact during the recent drag of days for me a thought kept slamming into the walls of my head and that was that I couldn't wait to once again sink my teeth into Joe's food. The sausage sandwich got a bit soggy from all of the marinara (which I wasn't expecting based on the description), so I was less excited about it. It was way too much food for two people. Like one sandwich is plenty for two, but I got greedy with wanting to try too much. We had a ton leftover! I would have probably rated it 3.5 stars, but the German roach running around pained me to see and stole my appetite. I'd want to say I'd come back and try one of those delicious sounding breakfast sandwiches, but roaches are a hard sell for me.
