I had the combination banh mi and it hit the spot. I thought the baguette was done well, with a soft center and a crispy crust, but not too crispy that it scrapes the roof of your mouth. I came in expecting huge portions based on other reviews, but I think it's the perfect size for a single sitting--at $8 I am definitely not complaining. I also tried their papaya smoothie ($5) but unfortunately I wouldn't get this one again. I think they use some sort of papaya ice cream for it but the papaya flavor was undetectable--it tasted more like a vanilla milkshake. Further down the main area of 8th Ave, Ba Xuyen is almost easy to miss. I came for a banh mi and their iced Vietnamese coffee during a late lunch. The grilled pork sandwich was pretty good. The pork was seasoned well, but it was a bit on the drier side. I do wish there was more pate because it would have made the sandwich infinitely better and less dry. The sandwiches are huge, definitely could be split between two people. Seems like the sandwiches are all prepared beforehand. They just heat it up and add in the veggies when you order. The Vietnamese iced coffee was very classic Vietnamese American because they used the Cafe Du Monde coffee for it. Again, this was premade. They just added ice. So far the most authentic banh mi spot I've tried in NYC and located around Sunset Park. It's on a street with many Asian small businesses, be sure to hop in the surrounding bakeries/boba spots while you are here. I gave it 4 stars because the banh mi's in NYC have been quite lackluster to me since I moved here, and the same with Vietnamese food in general (though I am still on the lookout). There should be more pate that when you squeeze the sandwich it starts to come out, the pickled veggies were a bit too sour that it overcame the flavor, and the cha lua was cut too small/was a little bland. Worse customer service! Ordered my #1 sandwich and iced coffee, was told to wait. I go and sit and the woman goes to clean the trash, sees me and says NOTHING. A few more ppl come in, I hear them order the same thing and their orders are ready right away! Overlooking the putrid smell of this establishment, this is one Banh Mi I thoroughly enjoyed, even though it is on the small side and they only take cash. $7.50 for one is not terrible, but I was able to polish this off in less than five minutes. Now I do understand the Banh Mi is more of a snack item and less of a sandwich, but this was skimpy beyond belief. The size of this sandwich does not underscore the beauty of it. My go to is usually the banh mi pate thit nguoi (the combination #1). The flavors were good and ratio of pickled veggies and meat were good, but I wish they gave more meat and more pate. The cha lua was also cut a little smaller than I like it to be, but overall still a pretty good banh mi and on the more affordable end too. She pointed out various items around the store and said they were all items she and her parents grew up eating. From her descriptions, I'd like to try the avocado smoothie, or the (saltyish) lemonade (although she warned the latter is not for everyone). The people working speak canto as well (as I heard a guy order in Canto), to which my friend gave me a short history lesson that some Vietnamese are ethnically Chinese, and picked up Vietnamese after immigrating to Vietnam. And then after migrating to the US, they have skillfully English to take my silly order. These sandwiches are decently sized, a solid 9-10inches long. My only issue was the snacks I purchased, where one was spoiled/fungus growth(Nem Chua) and the other was way too sweet (Chế Đậu Trang). Which I didn't realize until I was home. Beware that it is cash only. There are a handful of tables with chairs inside, but this is mostly a take out spot. They have a variety of pre-made vermicelli and rice dishes, lots of banh mi options, and some groceries available inside. I picked up a bbq pork banh mi, banh xu xe, and an avocado shake. The baguette is soft and crispy, with a generous amount of protein, pickled carrots/daikon, with cilantro and jalapeno! It's so rare to find banh mi's with jalapenos anymore so this was a delight. I haven't seen $6 banh mi in yearssss. Now I'm accustomed to paying $8 for a classic, so this steal hit my wallet considerately (though I wouldn't say it was bursting with meat). Plus, this is some juicy banh mi! Classic #1: bread is super soft and the meat juices trickled down my chin after every bite. The meat slices are semi-thick cut (at least thicker than the ones I've had in Chinatown), and pickled carrots aren't as tart (yay!). Grilled Pork Banh Mi #8: not your classic grilled pork because these are more chunky pieces than a slab of thinly grilled pork chop at other places. What can I say about this place? My favorite banh mi spot. This time I went and asked if we could order extra pate by itself in a small container as it was so delicious. The ladies didn't see to understand, so I said, "extra sauce" which they were confused and thought mayo or hot sauce. I said, never mind.
