But squeeze right in to the little lot for lunch and prepare to leave happy! What's to love: Oh wow, they have lunch combos on weekends. That's rare nowadays! And their sides are a little bit different--instead of regular fried rice, they've got BBQ pork rice to accompany your dish. I was really hesitant, but that stuff is delicious. I had some with crispy orange beef--which was perfectly tenderized on the inside and crispy on the outside. If that sounds too rich for you, rest assured there are a dozen vegetarian-friendly combos as well. Service is kind, food comes out fast, and you can overhear happy long-time regulars raving about their food like they're discovering it for the first time. I've come to appreciate Americanized Asian cuisine (AAC) and its place in our culture. AAC restaurants don't serve 100% authentic dishes but it's good anyhow and that's okay. The fact is, unless I'm in a restaurant where there's roasted duck, pork, or chicken hanging from hooks, the expectation for "authentic" Chinese food is low. Ba-Dar was a surprising hit closer to the authentic side of the scale. The staff was super friendly and made it a point to connect with my wife and I as well as our kids. The three dishes and one appetizer we ordered came out quickly and was enough to feed our party with leftovers. I actually felt guilty having lunch at Ba Dar. I have posted so many glowing reviews of my favorite Chinese restaurant; but my dining partner wanted to try Ba Dar, so we went. Anwas a very nice experience. The dining room is lovely. Planters are filled with colorful plants and flowers, and floral tablecloths grace each table. We were warmly greeted by the hostess. She brought icy water right away with menus. We were grateful; August in Tucson, you know. We were hungry and lots of things looked good, but we decided on a lunch special because it included hot and sour soup, which we specifically use as our marker for assessing deliciousness at Chinese restaurants. Had a solid Chinese dinner meal here! Don't let the strange name or location fool you! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly waitress and offered to sit in any booth (my favorite) we wanted. The restaurant is a little messy with cardboard supply boxes in the dining area, but other than that, tables and floors were clean. We ordered their fried rice, kung pao chicken, and won ton soup. Our first trip Ba-dar Chinese restaurant. Walking in was a little odd. It seemed as though we walked into the kitchen. We were promptly seated in a cozy dining room and a quite lovely Asian waitress took our drink and appetizer order. We started with the fried gyoza and a steamed dumplings of the chicken variety. Perfectly fried and steamed with flavorful fillings. The dipping sauce was a nice mix of soy and fish oil. For entrees we ordered the Mongolian chicken with pork fried rice and sesame chicken with pork fried rice. Bbq fried rice, perfectly cooked and flavorful pork nicely fried. The Mongolian chicken was full of nice white strips of chicken, loads of white onions with crispy rice vermicelli and a savory sauce. We had Google make us a reservation, but the restaurant wasn't terribly busy when we got there. Our server was friendly and checked back in with us frequently. The restaurant has several booths as well as tables and was comfortable. I really liked my food... Chicken with snow peas. We got the upgrade to include soup, an egg roll, two crab Rangoon, and upgraded rice. My husband wasn't wowed by his seafood dish. The squid was rubbery, the crab was imitation, the scallops kind of mushy, but the shrimp were good. The veggies were fresh and I thought the sauce was very good. Have not been here for a couple of years. When I was there a few years ago it was dark and dingy. They had a filthy fish tank near the entrance and wasn't sure about the food. Upon recent recomation I returned. They have remodeled and it was bright and clean. The fish tank was gone too. I ordered a number of things and they were excellent. This is a nondescript Chinese restaurant sitting just 30 ft off Broadway. When you walk in it smells like a Chinese restaurant; a combination sweet and savory. Quality (2): The hot sour soup had very nice thickness with the "hot" sneaking up on me. Nice chunks of onion,carrot, and mushroom. The rangoons had a great crisp with very gooey and garlic laced cream cheese filling. The egg roll was forgettable but wasn't bad. Unfortunately the child's lacked flavor and left a feel of oil film behind. The fried rice was flavorless and had a stale/dry feel. The the headliner -- walnut shrimp -- really left me disappointed. The shrimp were definitely over cooked to a point they were slightly mushy. The sauce they were cooked in was overly mayonnaisey. I was thinking the walnuts would be either chipped or dusted on the shrimp, but instead they were candied and lying on the ring of plate. Combining them into a bite did not improve the experience. Service (5): very prompt and friendly. Ambiance (4): pretty much what you expect. Chinese theme. The can light were a little bright so much if you looked up you'd have to quickly squint. The food here is just OK. It's not bad, but it's nothing to write home about. The seats are some of the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in at a restaurant. The backs are so straight you almost feel like you have to lean forward so keep that in mind if you have back problems. My friend who was with me is vegan and ordered a vegetarian soup that was supposed to have no animal products in it. She asked the server about the ingredients to be certain. They brought her a soup with shrimp in it. The shrimp were at the bottom of the soup and weren't evident until after she had taken a few bites. Thankfully, she did not have a shellfish allergy! The server seemed completely unconcerned and unapologetic when we sent the soup back for containing meat. If you are vegan or have a food allergy, I would not advise eating here. read more
