It had all kinds of green bell and jalapeño peppers in it. What? I'm - no. Also got house fried rice with you guessed it - full of peppers. I especially don't like green peppers so that was a no. Service is sparse. There were a number of other diners who seemed like regulars so it might be the peppers that put me off. read more

I've seen this place while walking to campus and today i got a late lunch at Zing Zing's. There are 4 tables inside and could probably seat ~20. Decor is pretty sparse but that's ok, I'm more interested in the food. I got the one meat (lion head - aka giant meatball, one veg (bean sprouts) special for $7.99. I would have loved a second meatball at that price but the food was decent. They have a multiple meat/ veg choices in their deli area. Loved seeing the bean sprouts because that's something more authentic that you won't see at panda or Pei Wei. They were seasoned well. The meatball was tasty, but unfortunately it was lukewarm to cool in the middle... so not super impressed by that. They did have a yummy chili oil that made everything more tasty. I might come back and try something off the menu, but I wasn't that impressed. read more

I dont know why i keep trying different Chinese restaurant in Tucson when i have already found the good ones. This is far from it. I want to know why $20 a la carte dish doesn't get me enough chicken meat for one mouthful but i do get enough chicken bones. I feel like they took a chicken thigh and chopped it up into half inch pieces, but if they did with an actual chicken thigh i would have gotten more meat. 80% of the dish was chopped green chilis with all the seeds still in them and they were hard as bullets. I really wanted to like this place, because a friend raved about it. Besides, it's tiny, and it's really hard to be successful with such a small place. I came for a late lunch - about 2:15 on a Monday, and got their lunch special (2 meat dishes and a veggie dish, with steamed rice, for $10). Maybe it was my late arrival after the lunch hour, because the pork and chicken dishes were nothing but bones and gristle - all of the meat had been served. The flavor was good, but there was no meat, and all of my effort went into picking bones out of my mouth. They were seriously scraping the bottom of the barrel. Also - why don't they pull the bones out of the pork and chicken before serving it? Is that a Chinese thing? The rice was good, and the steamed sprouts were okay, but the meat dishes were a huge disappointment. If I come back, I'll try a dish off the menu (a friend raved about the Singapore noodles), but I won't be getting the lunch special at 2:00pm again. read more

I work as an RN and had to get something quick off of Door Dash. This restaurant came up so I went to the vegetarian section as I don't eat animal products and ordered the Home Style Bean Curd which I have ordered at other similar restaurants with no issue. After I got a breather to eat, I was super disappointed to find the dish had tofu but was loaded with a shredded meat I couldn't even identify. Probably bc of the meat the dish was so greasy...I had to pick out the tofu and veggies the best I could and throw out the meat and grease. Because the meat was shredded this was not easy to do but I had no choice bc I can't leave the hospital to get anything else and it was after 11pm when I sat down to eat, so most places were closed. So I would ask that this restaurant does not put a dish in their vegetarian menu that is half meat. It makes no sense and just was a super bad experience. read more

This is one of Tucson's best restaurants! Try the Szechuan cabbage. The hot pots are amazing, the egg rolls are the only thing I'd avoid but only because they are average and most other things on the menu are amazing. This place is pretty good. The dishes are large and definitely have a lot of flavor, sometimes a little too salty. The star is the Xiangxi beef, which is stir fried beef seasoned with some cumin and dry chili spice and mixed in with a bunch of different types of hot peppers. If you like Hunan beef, you'll like this one a lot. The noodles here are also pretty good, if you're brave, you can try the Saozi noodles, they come in both soup and dry. The soup version is spicy and vinegar-y and has small chopped bits of potatoes and minced pork. There is never any place to sit unless you don't mind sharing a table with strangers, just as a warning. read more

Ordered vegetarian chow mein for pick up. The gentleman on the phone didn't seem to understand me at first but eventually said "okay." When I went to pick up, the receipt said "special chow mein," so I confirmed with him that there's no meat or seafood. He agreed. I got home and realized he misunderstood me. The noodles, which were thick like udon instead of thin, were covered in mixed meats and shrimp. Unfortunately I have a shellfish allergy so the whole dish was a waste. The lady who runs the place is friendly and nice.. The menu has small print, hard to read.. Vegan options are dispersed throughout menu instead of grouped into a section where it would be easier to find.. the selection I had was tofu on an iron plate.. it was ok.. but I had to pay extra for veggies and there wasnt much of them added in for the extra $.. .without the veggies it would have been a meal of fried tofu and white rice.. and they dont have brown rice.. didnt even know what it was.. they dont speak a lot of English .. Chinese is their main language.. Mostly Chinese people eat there.. the back door was open... someone was smoking out there.. and the smoke came in and filled the restaurant.. no one seemed much aware of this.. read more

We traveled from MN and were looking for a place to eat on Christmas Day. The formal sit down Chinese restaurants had a 2-hr waiting time so we decided to try this place. At first sight, the eatery is small and shabby but when we look at their menu we knew this place is authentic and serious about the food they serve. We ordered grilled whole fish, beef chowfun, scallop with rice noodle and hot pot, all are very delicious. We are Chinese and we are foodies so we hold a pretty high standard when it comes to Chinese food. The chefs here did a really nice job cooking both spicy Szechuan cuisine and Cantonese seafood. I was craving Chinese food and decided to come to this spot. To my surprise, I was nowhere near disappointed with the quality of the food. I ordered the stir fried beef noodles, and may I say it may possible be the eighth wonder of the world. The beef was succulent and juicy, the noodles were perfectly cooked, and the sauce was the perfect bow on top. This unassuming hole-in-the-wall restaurant on 6th is an absolute hidden gem in Tucson. I had been to Panda House several times but hadn't noticed this restaurant next door until finding out about it through a recent Tucson Foodie article. I'm glad I did, because this place is further evidence that authentic Chinese food is starting to make its way into Tucson. The keyword here is "authentic". You aren't going to find any sticky sugary sauces on fluffy battered chicken nuggets here. There isn't going to be any egg foo young or General Tso's chicken because the food here is actually the kind of food you will find in China. Instead, you will find an extensive list of noodle dishes, spicy entrees, and tasty cold meats. The "saozi noodles" is perhaps the most interesting dish, which originates in Shaanxi province, and consists of noodles in a spicy-sour broth. The initial fragrance is quite pungent, but the flavor is actually relatively neutral and quite delicious. They add omelette strips, pork, and fried tofu into the mix, which gives it a nice balance. You will also want to try their chow mein, which you can order with beef, pork, or shrimp, which also has a nice mild spice to it but a lot of the smokey "wok hei", a Cantonese term describing the unique flavor imparted on properly stir-fried foods. Their dan dan noodles is also quite tasty, topped with peanuts and cucumber strips. Their other entrees are really great too, although some dishes tend to be very similar. Light years away from its more elaborate Americanized cousin, Zing Zing's kung pao chicken is a very simple and modest dish with cubed chicken breast in a chili sauce. However, it isn't very different from the chicken with peppercorns, which I prefer due to the very nice intense "numbing-hot" flavor of the Sichuan peppercorns. I ordered both dishes but would recommend ordering only one or the other, depending on how much spice you enjoy. It's a very small space, with only a few tables, but there is usually room to eat in. Most of the customers seem to be Chinese international students at the university, and they tend to prefer the steam table entrees, which offers several dishes for a lunch combo plate. I haven't tried this option yet, but it seems to make for an affordable and quick lunch. Still, I would highly recommend trying the freshly made noodles, and despite having only one cook, the food comes out fast and hot. Finally, the real standout here would be the service. Zing Zing's seems to be run by a couple, a man who does all the cooking in the back and a woman who heads the front of the house. They are both extremely friendly and sweet and are always asking for suggestions. It must be somewhat of a gamble to open up a restaurant like this in Tucson, and I hope that they are successful. read more

This place has such good food me and my girlfriend had the dan dan noodles, kung pao chicken and the sweet and sour spare ribs during our first visit. Sadly they were out of fish, we wanted to try the crayfish. De-effing-licious! Dan dan noodles made our mouths numb, not for people who don't like spicy, be warned! 6/10 spicy level. We went after the lunch rush and the place wasn't busy at all. My wife got a noodle soup dish with egg, tofu, beef and some veggies with a spicy broth. I got the combo B with two meats and one vegetable (beef spareribs, chicken and eggplant) and two drinks. Other than a language barrier the food and service were fantastic! My combo was served almost immediately since it came from the hot bar at the front and the soup came within about fifteen minutes. Our hostess/waitress checked to ensure that we had everything we needed and check periodically to see if we needed anything else. Since we were one of the only people in the place I think she was concerned I did not like the food since I was not eating that much or quickly (we were there for about an hour and I only ate one of the meat portions and most of the eggplant, very little of the rice or other meat) but I reassured her that it was all good. There really was no way I was going to be able to explain to her that I am recovering from surgery from last week and can't eat that much right now, specially rich foods. My husband and I needed a bite to eat and we decided we'd give Zing Zing's a try! The restaurant is quite small and we decided to get carry out since all of the tables were occupied. The menu is huge... so many choices it was almost a little overwhelming. I ordered the shrimp chow mein and my husband got Szechwan beef and scallions with rice. Carryout did take around 30 minutes and we were very hungry, but once I tried the chow mein I was very happy- it was so good! Hubby's dish was great too. Our food took more than 40 minutes, and when the cold sesame noodles showed up, finally, there were pink slices of ham all over them. We asked to give the noodle dishes to the other people standing in the ridiculously long line, but our waiter took them back to the kitchen. So maybe you'll go off campus, like I did today, and find a Chinese restaurant named Zing Zing's. Seriously, this place is pretty damn good. Definitely stop by if you're going through Chinese food withdrawal. Side note: sometimes it can be hard to tell what's concerned meat, and what's considered vegetable, for the fast food menu. For example, summer squash with pork is considered meat, while tofu with pork is considered a vegetable. Go figure. read more

Yeah, no. No idea what zing zing means, but I'm guessing it's nothing good. This place feels like a low-rent diner and the gentleman who took our order (pay at the register) spoke absolutely no English, so questions were not possible. We were nervous so ordered only one dish, my favorite Singapore rice noodles, which usually tastes like spicy curry and has shrimp, chicken, white onions and egg. This version was pork so we asked for shrimp instead. We got a dish with tiny, tasteless over cooked shrimp, egg, bell peppers, heavy garlic, and "barely there" curry flavor. Missing were the lovely white onion that usually adds a needed sweet element to the dish and the garlic just overpowered the other flavors. If you're thinking of stopping by, you might want to try the Chinese restaurant next door because zing zing is just so-so. read more
