Second visit with Billy this morning. He's not good...he's GREAT! Takes time to understand the gear AND the player. Gives honest direct answers to condition of the gear and what can be done with it. I'm not even a novice anymore, but once was OK. With his help on getting the gear in shape I think I can actually play again with time. Can't ask anymore! -5 STARS- read more

Billy is the man! He setup my 20 year old strat and I had no idea what I was missing out on. Neck shim, frets all polished up / leveled and the action plays like a dream. Billy has opened up a whole new world on this guitar and I cannot thank / recommend him enough! read more

Billy was extremely helpful. He did a great job on my guitar! He had a few minutes so he was able to do it while I waited. Definitely worth going to if you need a luthier. read more

No one touches my instruments, but Billy. He's never let me down. This is not a pop in and wait for it shop. Call him and schedule.

Wow, just wow!! The owner, Billy, is beyond helpful and likeable!! When I called, he suggested that we bring in the guitar on the same day and that he would evaluate it. He fixed us up right then while we waited!! SCORE! read more

Billy is way to good at this! I have a guitar he re-frett 20 years ago and it still plays incredible. Broke my taylor next and he fixed and it sounds better than new. He will give yo a straight answer and not do work just to get your money. Sometimes the truth hurts but I would rather here the truth than BS just to get work. Problem with Billy is he is so good that everyone knows about him. I usually do my own work but nobody touches by guitars but Billy if I need him. Top notch work and I consider him a great friend. read more

I'm an older guy looking to learn guitar. I bought a used guitar from a private party and brought it to B&D this morning to have it checked out. I have never been to B&D or have ever met it's owner Billy. Billy took the time from his busy schedule to go over my guitar and make some minor adjustments to make it playable for this newbie. Not only did he fix my guitar, but took the time to give me valuble advice for an older beginner. His expertise and passion for playing guitar is evident through his workmanship and genuine concern for his customers. Thanks Billy! read more

I couldn't be happier to have found this place. This is my new forever go to for any and all issues that arise with my Bass. Best service I've had in years. Billy is the man! I'd recommend to any serious musician in AZ. read more

Very knowledgeable, honest and helpful. I received expert advice regarding my vintage Gibson guitar. I will definitely be back.

I have a Martin HD28 vintage reserve guitar that I am very cautious who I let work on it. After reading Billie's reviews, I took it to him. He did a complete refret, new (much better) saddle, reglued the bridge and lowered the action. He does amazing work and I won't take my guitars to anyone but him in the future. Honest, trustworthy, approachable. read more

I needed some advice on a guitar that needed attention and was recommended to Billy at B & D guitar repair. So glad I went here. Billy does fantastic work and is honest and stands behind his work. Hard to find this quality of service anywhere anymore. I would recommend him to anyone. A true gem in the desert. read more

B & D Guitar (Billy) is truly one of the best. I make my living with my guitars, so they are always being hauled from gig to gig and played for hours upon hours. The first thing I do when I purchase a new guitar is, take it to Billy. Billy is honest right from the start. There have been times I have had to send brand new guitars back in exchange for another. Do to poor craftsmanship or poor storage and handling. Billy recognizes the defects that I don't see, which in turn saves me time and money. Let's face it, a lot of guitars are made overseas, or in assembly lines and wood is a constantly changing thing. I once accidentally knocked over my most valuable guitar, (the guitar that belonged to my Dad.) It broke the headstock and broke my heart. I took it to Billy and he repaired it where you cannot tell it ever happened. The only complaint I have with Billy is, he is extremely busy. He will make time for emergencies whenever possible but don't expect to be pushed ahead of the line just to make you happy. Think of it this way, the best restaurants in town are always busy and require a waiting period or a reservation ahead of time. You can expect this from B & D as well. When someone is this good they are going to be busy. Once again, I absolutely love the work Billy does and I refer him to all of my friends. I already have an appointment for my next guitar. read more

I have used Billy for years. Never an issue. Killer setups and top notch service. Never been disappointed. After the first guitar, Billy was my guitar tech. read more

I am not sure why so many people give this guy a high rating at all. I tried to use his services twice. The first time was to setup a Fender Jazz bass I had bought used. The neck was fine but I needed help setting it up right, which can be a pain on bass. Being a guitar guy (until then) I had no idea how to set up a bass. Immediately he gave a look down the neck and claimed there was a "loop up" and that he could fix it basically for what I paid for the bass. I declined and had a different luthier set it up and it was fine. Looking down the neck I could see there was a bit of a misalignment of the 4th and 5th frets, but barely. It is almost impossible for it to be perfect except with pricey boutique builds. It never was an issue when playing and, if there ever was an issue, it would be gone now due to usage. FYI: I have gigged this bass for 10 years and it still could be played 10 more. So years later I decided to give him a second chance, because I had met several guitar players who were adamant that B&D is the best in the valley. I took a BRAND NEW Lakland 5-string bass for him to set up. He looked at the neck and, again, said there was a "loop up" and claimed he would fix it for the same fee. Fixing meant pulling out all the frets, sanding the neck and then refretting. On a new bass!!!!! I declined, again. I went home, pulled a few YouTube videos, bought the tools and learned to set up my own bass guitars. Years later, some guy had an overpriced Fender Jazz Bass 62 RI for sale on Craigslist. He claimed that he had some good work done on the neck. On the phone he told me that the same exact luthier had fixed the "loop up" on the neck and that's why he was selling it with a premium. I asked him what a "loop up" is and he had no clue. He basically swallowed it line and sinker and gave his hard earned money to fix whatever a "loop up" is. OH here is the thing: I had called Lakland about the "loop up". A kind British gentleman used some very choice words, some I had never heard, to explain what he thought about the luthier. read more

If there is a more knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and considerate guitar guy in Arizona, I haven't found them. What a gem - you can't go wrong bringing your cherished instrument to Billy. Recommended U bet! read more

Came here with my daughter to see about getting her violin repaired. Although he was unable to assist with the repair as he does guitars, he made sure to direct us to another shop that could. Thank you for your help and going above and beyond!! read more

Billy is an artisan. Eclectic, unconventional, and outspoken. He took a cheapo guitar my colleagues customized for me and made it entirely playable for the first time ever. Only complaint is on me. I did not take Billy up on his recommendation to trim the set screws on the saddle. He was right, I was wrong. Learned my lesson and will be back. Be patient my friends, it's worth it. read more

My young daughters' ukele needed a small repair. I walked in without an appointment, and although Billy was busy and unsure if he had the right sized screw, he stopped what he was doing and took the time to try. Within 10 minutes the ukele was fixed AND tuned. Best of all, my daughters were so happy to have their instrument back! We had a great experience and will definitely go back for any future instrument repairs! Thanks, Billy! read more

Absolutely perfect intonation...perfect playability across the fret board. Billy is nothing short of a master of his craft. He set up my telecaster this week and I can't be more pleased with the result. Long lead time but absolutely worth it. read more

No one else touches my guitars and for very good reason. This is the best service, best quality and best investment you can make with this shop. From Fret dressing, outstanding set ups and amazing customer service. I have been coming here for years and many more to come. Worth every cent and definitely worth the time. read more

No one can beat Billy's killer setups. Most guitars, even the mega-expensive ones, need a set up after you take them home from the guitar shop. I've taken all (8) of my axes to B & D, with no regrets! Billy has you play for him so he can pick up on your style, then sets up your guitars for your playability. Its the personal attention to detail that can't be beat. I cannot recommend his services enough. 10 stars... Dude. read more

B & D Guitar Repair - Guitar Stores Near Me - Phoenix, Arizona

I will preface this by stating I'm a drummer, and know little to nothing about guitars. That said, I've had a Fender Strat for over 10 years now, which I randomly play in my room when I feel like pretending to be a rock star. Never changed the strings, never had any work done to it, and it needed both badly. I mentioned to one of my guitarist friends that I felt it was in need of some maintenance, as I was planning on doing some home recording. He lit up and said "I have the perfect guy!". Enter Billy @ B & D. The first thing I did was email Billy, giving him an idea of my situation. He wrote back within a day and simply told me to give him a call when I had a few minutes to chat, so he could better help me. I did, and he was super easy to talk to. Based on the tuning I play in, he recommended the strings I should buy, and told me to bring them with the guitar. Easy peasy. I arrived on a Saturday morning in mid August, and found a few other people were there waiting to speak with Billy. He was helping a woman & her husband, so I got to talking with a few of the other customers. They were all repeat visitors, and when I told them of my situation, they assured me I was in good hands. When it was my turn, I plopped my guitar down on the counter, admitted I knew nothing about the instrument sitting before me, and told him I needed him to make it sound good again. I reminded him of our phone conversation, and showed him the strings I had bought. He did some quick measurements, and noted that my guitar definitely needed some TLC, but it wouldn't cost me an arm & a leg. Then he requested to watch me play a little bit so he could get an idea of how I personally play. Well, damn, put me on the spot, hahaha. I (attempt to) play a few licks, and that's all he needs to see. He writes up a ticket and gives me a copy. This is where things get interesting... to paraphrase, he says, "Your day is November 4th. I want you to call this number. I won't be here, so you're going to leave a message. Give me your name & the info on this ticket. If you don't, I won't know to work on your guitar, and it will just sit here." My friend had prepped me about this odd arrangement, so I was already kinda familiar with how it worked. Since it was August, Billy didn't want me to leave my guitar with him, because he felt bad that I wouldn't have anything to play for the next couple months when I felt like being a rock star. So I took it home with me. I brought it back November 3rd with the strings, reminded him who I was, and he made a couple quick notes. He reminded me that I needed to call him, and I told him I had set an alarm on my phone so I wouldn't forget! The next day, I called, gave him my info, and a few days later, I get a call back. He tells me he's working on it, and wanted to know if I wanted some blah blah guitar language blah blah done to it. I told him I had no idea what he was talking about, so he took the time to explain it to me. Before we hung up, he said it would be "ready tomorrow." Tomorrow?! Wow, I didn't expect it so soon. Works for me! So I ventured back over there a few hours ago, showed him my ticket, and he hands me the guitar. He says "you don't pay until you play", and walks me into a side room to plug it into an amp so that I have the opportunity to make sure everything is just right. Wow. Just. Wow. Plays like butter. I actually... sound... good? He leaves the room and tells me to play for a bit on my own just to make sure I'm happy. So I played about a minute of random original material, and I've never felt like more of a rock star (well, as a guitarist, at least) in my life. Felt great, played great, I'm happy. So I walked out to the lobby area and he explained everything he did so I was aware. He then tells me if I have any issues now or in the future, he would take care of me. I pay, we chit chat, shake hands, and I've had a big smile on my face ever since. To say I'm excited is an understatement. Let the home recording begin! Thanks Billy!!! read more

Billy @ B&D is absolutely amazing! Came in last minute to have my bass fixed and he took time out of his busy day to help me out before we had to go to Vegas for a show! I won't take my instruments anywhere else but here to be worked on! Wish I would've known about B&D a long time ago! read more

Billy truly does amazing work! I brought him my 1962 Gibson ES-330 which needed lots of work done to it. I was very hesitant due to that fact that it's a 55 year old guitar, but he assured me that he would make it perfect, and he did! He heated the neck to fix a reverse bow, re-fretted it, new Kluson tuners, and installed a new bridge. I couldn't be happier with this guitar. As long as I live in Arizona, my guitars will go to Billy. read more

I took a guitar in to Billy on a recommendation from a friend. Billy is the first Luthier I've ever spoken with who didn't look down on me because I'm not as good a player as he is. Most people I've dealt with at various stores will just set up a guitar or fix obvious problems; Billy is the first, and only, to ask me questions and understand me without me feeling judged by my answers. I was very impressed. He also warned me his wait to get work done is about 2 months out. I'm fine with that especially since I know it's going to be perfect and tailored to me and not just done the way someone thinks it should be and I should play it. read more

I've found Billy three years ago through a friend of mine after having an off-putting experience with a re-fret on one of my guitars. He said take it to this guy. I did, and I owe my friend many thanks! I took an acoustic to Billy to setup...just to try him out. Since, he has done all sorts of work for me from basic setups to entire re-frets. If you want a particular sound, ask Billy, he will educate you. Billy has worked on every one of my guitars at some point and they ALL play incredible. Cons: He does not have anybody working for him. He does ALL the work himself. Because of this there is a wait. But I tell you what...it is well worth it! read more

Went there once and now I'll never go anywhere else. Phenomenal personalized service. Billy was the first guitar repair guy who really sat down and took the time with me to figure out what I wanted and needed rather than just giving me a "standard set up". Took him my '62 reissue Telecaster. He watched me play, asked me how I generally play (capo or not) and what my concerns were. Along with the standard setup, he convinced me to move to a heavier gauge string, lowered the action and tweaked the bridge to give me more consistent tuning up the neck. Great stuff. Took him my Rickenbacker for similar love and he showed me that it really needed a fretboard rebuild. When I told him that I was worried that I might devalue it if I ever chose to sell it, he worked out a plan to make the best of it while retaining all the original parts. Not fast, and not cheap, just really, really, really good. read more

There are not as many craftsmen in the world as there once was. Billy is a hold-out master craftsman, make no mistake about it. His work is superior. He is not a turn and burn shop, and you probably won't get your gear back the next day. He WILL be upfront with you on his timing, which is all I can ask. I cannot recommend him higher. read more

WOW...awesome place. Excellent customer service. We purchased an electric guitar and have had the best of luck in keeping it in top shape. The owner, Billy, is fabulous and works with us on all the stuff we need done while keeping the repair costs at a minimum. Highly recommend B & D Guitar!!!!! read more

This is the real deal as far as Guitar shops go. I brought in an old Epiphone acoustic guitar I was hoping to repair. The owner, Billy, took his time to look it over, showed me the problem, explained what it would take to fix, and offered his opinion regarding "was it worth to repair". What drew me in immediately was when I called on the phone and explained my problem. The first question Billy asked me since I was on the fence about bringing it in was, "Do you like the guitar?" Class act. Don't go anywhere else in a 200 square mile radius if you care about good, honest, service. read more

I've been taking my guitars to Billy for 12 years and won't take them anywhere else. He sets up my guitars exactly how I like it to play and has good advice and ideas that I wouldn't have thought of. From all the spectacular reviews, I can see why Billy is so busy. Moving 2,000 miles to start fresh in AZ with my '67 Gibson J-50. I don't trust many people to work on it, but from the reviews I would gladly take mine to him. Hoping to find someone almost as good. Peace. read more

This place is a diamond in the rough. Found the location on yelp walked in with a little guitar (cheap at that) for my six-year-old son and needed a string replaced. Little did I know they don't sell single string but offer incredible guitar repair service. I hope my little guy plays for years so we can come back. Thank you! read more
