Hunt is a small shop in an industrial office park. During business hours, parking can get stuffy. We went on two Saturdays, where there wasn't an issue. Pal Gary H. Told Mr. P about Lowell and Hunt Amplification, and so we went - needing some work on a head that was popping, or maybe had a grounding issue. Lowell is super knowledgeable, and really took the time to comb through Mr. P's guitar head. He did a service, and cleaned everything, also trying different tubes to get the best sound from the head. Had a chronic issue with my 70s twin reverb that MTroniks tried to fix via the old shotgun/hope-I-fixed it method of cleaning out someone's wallet. They didn't exactly leave me high and dry or do anything that was technically wrong, at least in terms of the actual repair, but we did hit an unnecessary and uncomfortable impasse (impasse - meaning they couldn't help me and I didn't trust them) that left me in the dark and dealing with the same problem I had before they touched the amp. A short conversation with Lowell at Hunt Amplification and an inspection of my amp revealed a rookie mistake on my part and an easy repair - all of about 15 really cool minutes with an extremely knowledgeable and very nice guy. Not only did I learn a few things, I had a great experience and my amp sounds/performs better than it ever has. I have no problem recommending Hunt Amplification to others looking for someone they can trust to take care of their vintage equipment. On a last note, Lowell recommended a Presence mod for this 74 twin and I'm glad I took advantage of it - Really neat mod that added some great tonal options that I didn't have before and he made sure I was familiar with how to use it before I left with the amp - Exceptional! read more

Update 10/03/2019: after the mishap last week trying to get a hold of Lowell, I was finally able to take my Soldano amp in today to have tubes changed and bias done. I see why he gets only awesome reviews, he really knows his stuff when it comes to tube amps and he's a super nice guy to boot. Worst day of my life when one of my beloved VTL MB-450 amplifiers had a catastrophic tube failure. Not only did the B+ fuse blow but the smoke told me something more. I contacted Lowell by email to see if he could help. Lowell responded almost immediately and with limited information provided some guidance on what the problem could be. After the tests he suggested we determined the problem and he told me he could fix it. Dropped off the amp and it was repaired and bias set in less than 24h. I was scared I might need a second mortgage but pricing was more than reasonable! My amps are like a family member and I was very worried to have them repaired anywhere but VTL, but Lowell inspired huge confidence, performed high quality and fast service and I would highly recommend him for high end tube audio repairs!! read more

These have to be fake reviews, take your amp to this pretender you will be sorry or took, or both. I couldn't find my regular amp guy so I believed the hype seen at the website and reviews. I took my very high end amplifiers to this pretender of an amp guy. On one of them he had never worked on before, I'm talking brand name, and could not get the sound right after I gave him 2 tries at it. He tried to get the sound from watching youtube videos I found out later. The other he said he replaced the tubes and it was fine. Charged me 380.00, and neither one was right I played maybe an hour on both and gave up. I wasn't about to let this, for lack of a better word (con man) have at them again. Some time went by and I finally found my really good amp guy again he had moved to Chandler. I just took both amps over to him and had him put them back right. What he told me is this guy put the most cheapest chinese tubes you can possibly get in both amps when I had asked Hunt for the best. My guy found the bias was way off on both amps, I mean not even close. All the pots were left dirty on both amps. On one amp the switches for dark and bright were not even working. I suspect he took the good ones. The other amp' he said he couldn't find anything wrong with, the pots were not working, cutting out. All the power tube retainers were broken. The circuit board main ground was loose. That could be major. Please heed this warning. There are good amp guys around. Don't waste your money or take a chance here especially if you have high end amps. read more

​ I had been going to the same amplifier tech for over 20 years. He works out of Chandler Arizona and always did a great job. The downside was he usually took a very long time on my amplifiers to get them fixed . They were always fixed right , but it usually took a long time. I decided to bring my Twin Reverb ​ to Lowell Hunt in hopes of getting my amplifier back quicker than I was used to. Evidently my reissue Twin Reverb had just blown a tube, and Lowell had to do a replacement of all the power tubes. When I was in his shop he told me that he knew some good mods for the Fender Twin Reverb in order to get it to a more accurate spec than the reissue had. He let me know that some of the tone caps were different and that he could replace them with better quality caps that were of the correct value to the original. When I got my amplifier back the Tube replacement was about $130 , and the mods were $160. I thought it was unusual that Lowell did not give me back the original caps , which my former amplifier Tech had always done when he did a repair modification. I asked Lowell to give me a receipt that listed all of the modifications he did on my amp, but for some reason he never did so. About a year later I blew another tube and decided to take it to my former Tech and not lowell. I asked my tech to check out the mods at Lowell had done to the tone capacitors. He told me that the main board had never been removed from the amplifier and no changes at all were done. It had been well over a year since Lowell had done the work on my amp and I don't think it was worth calling him back and accusing him of being a thief. The problem is that Lowell Hunt is one of the only amplifier technicians in town, so he does have a captive audience. I don't like leaving bad reviews and I don't like hurting a small business such as this, but people should know that this guy claims to do work on amplifiers and doesn't do a damn thing to them. read more

I was referred through a buddy. I was told this was the place to go, so after months of going without my tube head working right. Understand, I had taken it somewhere before Hunts, yet left with the same issues. Dropped off a little tube amp I scored off Craigslist, was running too hot, annoying hum, but great little class A tube amp. Turn around time was amazing, Lowell knows his stuff, made short work of the circuit, reworked the ground scheme, elevated filament supply, fixed sockets, added filter and showed me how to snip out if I thought the tone was a little darker! I found Lowell though Billy at B&D Guitar Repair before he moved his operation to B&D's location . I have two vintage Marshall JMP 45W heads. One was made in 76 that did NOT have the vintage tone. I had two other people work on it. Both with very good knowledge of my amps. I had them install Mercury Magnetic transformer, power supply and choke. They also attempted to modify the circuit to match the circuit of an amp to match that of a loaner amp that possessed the tone I wanted. The loaner amp was my new baseline for tone. We even tried to source the exact cable that was used in loaner amp to make sure everything was the same. Nothing worked. I ended up buying another JMP head made in 78 (same year as the loaner). The tone was close to my wants, but still not as good. Enter Lowell. I took both heads to him. After several conversations I decided I did not want two amps that sounded the same and decided to let him have free reign on the 76. He made it so it sounds like the higher gain JCM800. AWESOME! For the 78, Lowell made it sound better than the loaner amp! Lowell is now my amp guy! He is honest and very easy to talk too. He knows his stuff and what to do to get every bit of tone out of an amp tailored to your desires. Next on his bench is my British made VOX AC30-TB that is missing "something". What can I say, Hunt Amplification is one of if not the best place to get your amp serviced. I drove 100 miles from Prescott because I know Lowell is the best in the business. I just recently had him look at my 1964 Fender Twin Reverb which is in near perfect condition and untouched. It started making some noise so I brought it to Lowell @ Hunt Amplification. Lowell was very honest with me and figured out I just had a noisy reverb driver. He swapped it for a matching NOS tube that he luckily had in stock and the amp didn't make any unwanted noise. Lowell also checked the bias and gave the amp a once over for no extra charge. The amp works great now and is still completely original. I cant wait to bring him my 1979 Marshall JMP for a recap. He diagnosed the problem and fixed the issue quickly, his work is amazing, and his prices are reasonable. I was referred to Lowell through my guitar teacher. I brought him in a JCM800 50W combo I had recently bought. Not only did he swap all of the cheaper components Marshall was using at the time for top-grade ones, he (at my request of course) basically altered the circuit to be more like a Marshall Plexi. Now I have tons of clean headroom and have a wonderfully punchy, beautiful sounding amp. Additionally, he made those alterations in a way that can be easily reversed if I ever wanted back the JCM 800 circuit. I bought a used Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 100 on ebay and when it arrived I noticed something was wrong with the #4 tube and it just didn't have that "Marshall" sound. I went to Hunt Amplification and met with Lowell to discuss changing my tubes to NOS tubes. I talked with Lowell for a bit about my needs and he suggested and tried several tubes before going with what sounded best. He also suggested some further modifications. I took that advice with the caveat that I love my amp so was a bit nervous about making changes. He told me he would reverse the minor changes if I did not like the sound. I did like the changes. My AC30 sounds even better. Also, I was able to keep changed components so if I ever wanted to sell the amp it could be stock again. I am a very happy customer.
