Thai is my favorite cuisine, and Ayada Thai used to be my favorite Thai restaurant in NYC. The Drunken Noodles are, by far, the best I have ever had. However, over the last three years the NYC Health Department has reported serious health violations, and I will not eat there again until the health score is improved. Authentic Thai food can be sometimes hard to find but this restaurant does a fine job of offering a broad menu of dishes. Food is delicious with a decent blend of Thai herbs and spices-- better than many Thai restaurants but not outstanding. The service was very prompt and staff very kind having checked on our waters and clearing empty plates often. The frills are kept to a minimum here but the dishes are priced for frills. Pleasant Thai spot discovery in Jackson Heights/Elmhurst. The surrounding area was pretty quiet, so it was fascinating to see so many people gathered in here. I get it though, the dimly lit interior with lamps is bound to allure crowds. There was an option for Small or Large for drinks. Their large Lychee Thai Iced Tea ($12) was gigantic, which worked out perfectly for us sharing. I ordered the Crispy Catfish Salad ($17), and I wish I didn't choose it as I was catfished into thinking there was fish, but it was mainly crispy skin with bits of meat. The mango base salad though, was worth getting. I've seen mango salad in Thai restaurants before but never ordered, so I'm happy I got to try such a tropical flavorful and savory dish with a slight spicy kick. They allow adjusting of spice level too! Restaurants that allow us to stay long when it's not busy is always respected in my book. Ate here with my family a few months ago. This is a local spot for them and they knew exactly what to order from their menu. Their dishes were enough to share between 8 to 10 of us, and we had a good time chatting and sharing a meal. I really enjoyed the chive cakes. I came here for a late lunch with family, and it was moderately busy. The strip does feature a decent selection of Thai restaurants, so it was tough to choose. We ultimately chose this place since there were articles and awards plastered outside. The inside was quite simple, but in places like this I don't come for the ambiance, I come for the food. I had the pad kua-gai, which is sauteed broad noodles with chicken, squid, and egg with sriracha sauce. Pretty good, just a fair warning when they say "broad", they mean broad...the noodles were wider than, say, linguine or fettucine wide. The lunch special for this included one spring roll with chicken tom yum soup. Decent for both. We also had the Nam Tok Noodle Soup, which was a noodle soup with beef and meatballs, Chinese broccoli, and bean sprout. I honestly had higher hopes for this dish as I've had awesome Thai noodle soups in my life, but this didn't cut it. The soup was quite bland, and the beef and meatballs felt like ordinary quality meat. There are lots of other Thai restaurants in the block that seem quite authentic. My friends raved about Ayada on far too many occasions, so it was only fair that I made the trek into Queens after the US Open. Let's get started. Service/Ambience: If you've read any of my reviews, you know I'm a sucker for low-lit, intimate spaces. Ayada gets a 10/10 on both fronts. You could opt to go here for a date night or get a larger group and do a medium-sized outing. It feels so cozy in here, and the brief interaction I had with the staff warm and welcoming--big smiles from people who seemed to actually enjoy being there. Food/Drinks: I did my research ahead of time and pulled from my friends' recommendations. I got the green curry and the raw shrimp salad to go. Both dishes were so flavorful! The raw shrimp salad threw me for an absolute loop seeing as it was raw. But even then, it was so well-prepared--and the spice! What a kick--spice and seafood lovers clock in immediately. I hadn't ordered a drink but decided to pick one in store. How can you do Thai and not do a Thai iced tea? Sweet, but not overpowering--the way it should be. Ayada, you're a win in my book. The sour sausage was juicy and actually not too sour. The tom kha soup was very flavorful and perfect for the rainy day. I came here for a group dinner. They have a stellar cocktail menu. Several of the options were very tempting. The Conga was perfectly spicy and tart. The Falling Slowly had less of a kick, even with the thai chilis, but was fruity and well-balanced with the smokiness of the mezcal. I recommend the chive cake appetizer. The cake is served in thick, triangular slices. It's very crispy and flavorful, especially with the sauce that's served on the side. For my main, I went with a classic and had pad thai with tofu. I enjoyed the medium spice level. I usually go a bit spicier but even at medium, I could still taste the kick. Some of my friends who ordered higher spice levels said it wasn't strong enough though. For large parties, they automatically add a 20% tip to your bill. We were a group of six and were surprised by this when we got the check. I love it here so much. It's close by the elmhurst hospital so you can stop by here after you take care of business. I usually always get the calamari because I love that especially with the sauce. I like the cut and CRONCH of the calamari as well, super tasty. I also tried something new, the satay chicken which is good I enjoyed the sauce options and I was full after my meal. The Thai tea is the star of the whole meal and was delicioussssss I recommend everybody get that and maybe a drink as their drinks are great and a good price! There's two sides to Ayada, my party got confused we lost two people to the other side of the restaurant. Apparently there are two separate entrances? Ambiance is nice, dark and warm. The food is good, I had the red curry beef, no issues. The pork belly was on the salty side. Crispy watercress salad was good. I would definitely come back again and try other dishes. Finally got to try this place after hearing about it so much and I gotta say I will definitely be coming back. This might just be my new go to thai spot. PAD SEE EW PAD THAI - both of these had a great texture, especially the pad see ew, which is my go-to noodle at thai restaurants. Moist, bouncy, deliciously chewy, with deep salty and umami flavor. Hits the mark on that fresh noodle texture that you hope for. The pad thai was good but there's def better out there. ESSAM SAUSAGE haven't had this before but it was highlighted on the menu and honestly it was really good - it was rich and kind of had this funky acidity which actually was very enjoyable and had a nice crisp texture to the edges of the diagonally cut sausage pieces. Would get this again CHIVE PANCAKE Another go to dish at thai restaurants, these blocks of deeply fragrant chive/scallion fried blocks are doughy on the inside and crisp, almost flaky on the outside. Satisfying crunch with an even more satisfying chew inside, and paired with a wonderfully salty sauce that the chewy sticky inside just soaks up - delicious PAPAYA SALAD crunchy strands of papaya - great job with this also. Nothing too out of the ordinary but just a good papaya salad. THAI ICED TEA THAI ICED COFFEE - make sure to mix the coffee up as I noticed the condensed milk sitting at the bottom of my iced coffee and I was like wow that's why i'm getting so much chickory flavor! Finally, two desserts: the pumpkin custard and sticky rice with mango. All very tasty and work well with their summer drink selections. I've walked by so many times in Chelsea Market and this Thai restaurant looks small and inconspicuous but there is actually a whole other part of the restaurant that they lead you to! I've been twice - once during Pride weekend where there was a drag show, and once on a Friday evening where there was live music. I'd definitely recommend something from the speciality menu. The Pad See Ew was just okay but the egg noodles with the roast pork (dry) at the bottom of the menu I would highly recommend ($18). They had a large variety of dishes. I really liked the Panang Duck Curry ! The flavor of the curry broth was so good, and the texture is nice and crispy. Came here for dinner with a friend visiting from out of town and ordered the curry duck and crispy catfish salad. The texture of the pad see ew was perfect but the flavors were just off - tasted more of the burntness. The food looked way better than it tasted. The massaman curry was too sweet, with tough pieces of pork (unchewable) and potatoes not cooked well. Huge disappointment.
