Stopped for a late lunch at Axum Restaurant, an Ethiopian restaurant that we'd never heard of. It's located beside a couple of auto garage shops. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 2:45pm) and there was only one other group inside. The inside is bright and colourful but outdated. The banquet style chairs are very old school and not the comfiest. The umbrellas hanging on the ceiling were a cute touch. Service is friendly but the one waitress disappeared once our food came out. The menu is split into vegetables, poultry, lamb, beef, fish and drinks. Stick to their vegetable offerings. - Spicy tea ($3.00) - spicy is misleading. Tea is on the sweeter side (cinnamon and cardamom notes). - Injera - they're generous with the injera. We had more than enough for the two of us. - Vegetable combo ($15.00) - choose four (out of five) options. We went with the miser wot, gomen, tikil gomen and atikilt wot. Split lentils were tasty from the spicy hot sauce. Spinach (with garlic) was my favourite of the four vegetable options. Cabbage & carrot were tender and the green beans & carrots also hit the spot. - Yebeg tibs wot ($16.00) - cubed lamb sauteed and simmered in hot sauce. This was disappointing; lamb was dry and tough, clearly not fresh. The sauce couldn't save the meat. Wouldn't get this again. Decent spot for Ethiopian food.

Tried this Ethiopian place while on holiday in Vancouver. It did not disappoint. While it shares a parking lot with Mr Lube, it has parking, which is generally difficult in Vancouver. We ordered kik alica, miser wat, gomen, and lamb tibs. The injera was tasty, the food amazing, and the value was very good! Will go back for sure. Give this place a try. The lamb tibs had perfect spicy flavor. Try it!!

Had no idea there was an Ethiopian place here until now. Parking is available in the nice large lot beside the building, especially outside of business hours. The place is very cozy, and the interior is quite classic. I can't speak for the authenticity of the decor as I've never been to Ethiopia, but the room definitely had an exotic feel. I would agree with Marc D. about the cleanliness of the place. Definitely the cleanest feeling Ethiopian place I've been to so far. The staff (looks like a mom and pop operation) were very friendly and helpful. One cool thing about traditional Ethiopian cooking is besides eating with your hands, you also share a common plate. Makes for a good bonding experience. We tried 4 different types of wat (Ethiopian stew) - beef, pork, chicken, and fish. Everything was very good. No complaints. The dishes look a bit on the small side, but once you start filling up with injera, you and your friends will leave stuffed. After wrecking ourselves, the bill came to only $14 a person. Beautiful. Recommended.

This was the only Ethiopian restaurant in Vancouver I had yet to try and now I'm kicking myself, as it's one of the best. We ordered takeout throughout their online system and everything was ready within half an hour. We each got the vegetarian combo (vegan) and got the Inguday Tibs (a marinated mushroom dish) to share. Everything was delicious, especially the miser wot (the red lentil dish in the top left of the photo) and the mushroom dish. Huge portions with tons of injera for dipping. We had enough for a lunch each the next day. Really impressed with this place. It's not in the best location but is well worth the try. Highly recommended.

Tried this place last night for the first time. As other reviews stated, yes the service is slow. We waited about 40 mins to place our order and get drinks. But it was busy earlier and there was only one server so I understand and it was not her fault. Would be helpful if another server were working. Ordered the veg combo and tried all 5 options. The cabbage one had lots of cardamom in it and was everyone's least favourite. The split pea was very yummy. It was good, I wasn't really blown away by anything though. I'd give it a 3.5 Overall, it was a fun experience and I'm glad I tried it :)

My friend and I came here on a whim. We had just checked into are hotel, and were cruising around looking for a place to grab a late night dinner. This was the first place we saw that was still open proceeded to try it out. Neither, of us had eaten Ethiopian food prior to coming here, but left the restaurant as fans. I ordered Tib Wots(sautéed beef pieces simmered in hot sauce) and she ordered Yeber Altecha wot( lamb pieces simmered in a mild sauce). The dishes came with injerea(a flat bread) that you use to wrap the meat in, and it was delicious. Only warning is everything is cooked from scratch so if you are in rush this is not the spot for you. We were not in a rush so it was not a big deal to wait.

Have you ever had Ethiopian food before?…read more Nope, neither have I. I was hanging out with a friend from across town & I wanted to try dinner at another restaurant further up on Commercial Dr. So we decided on drinks here first at Harambe Ethiopian Restaurant, while we waited for our standby reservation to come through at the other restaurant. My friend had been here before & highly recommended we come back again to eat. I got to try Ethiopian Honey Wine for the first time. It was refreshingly delicious. Sat at the bar & chilled. Saw various dishes coming out of the kitchen & the look & smell were causing my stomach to growl. Got to meet the owner Daniel - a very nice gentleman. He has been running this restaurant now for over 25 years. He expressed that times are hard, as noted by all the restaurant closures all over Metro Vancouver. But he's hanging in there so if you want to try Ethiopian food - consider Harembe & support local. Look out for more food pictures sometime in the later part Spring when I return.

I got the chef's choice combination and my friend got the veggie lovers combination. The food arrived relatively promptly and it was presented as a nice spread. Eating with our hands was a neat experience to enjoy the food the traditional way. The server told me to mix all the ingredients together but I wanted to taste each item first. Perhaps mixing it all would have been better as there were a couple items I found their taste to be a bit strong on their own. Personally I also found it on the oily side. The injera was great at soaking it all up but I was unable to finish the injera that was served at the bottom of all the ingredients at the end, with all the oil that was there. Overall it was a great experience and if I were to return, I would skip the combo and order a dish I liked.

If you are 4 and hungry, I would recommend getting one additional dish. This was my first time trying Ethiopian food, and it was quite good. We came during the holiday season, so there was one person womanning the whole restaurant. The music was Ethiopian, which was nice ! The "crepe" (called Anjera I believe) is fermented, meaning that, if you were expecting a sweet crepe-like flavour, you will be surprised because it's quite sour. The combo came with extra Anjera on the side. Beef Key Wats: I quite liked it. Not super "stew"-like in my opinion (more like grilled if that makes sense?), but also not dry. Lamb and Chicken Awaze Tibs: reminiscent of a curry of sorts? More stew-like. Quite spiced/flavourful. Bell-pepper presence. Gojo Veggie Combo: the veggies were also quite flavourful and varried. Included was cabbage, spinach, green beans, lentils. Y'all I am embarrassed to say that it was SPICY for me (but also my capsaicin tolerance is non-existent). Overall, the meats were moist, tender, and flavourful.

The platter came with misir wot (red lentils), yellow lentils, shiro (smoked chickpea), and a yellow cabbage dish, with a green salad and 3 extra pieces of injera. First, props to the salad -- so many Ethiopian places give you a lame green salad with iceberg lettuce; this had some nice leafy greens with cucumber and tomato, and a very nice tangy dressing. All 4 of the hot dishes were excellent, especially the misir wot and yellow lentils. Huge portions, which makes the rather steep price ($18) worth it (this is higher than any veggie combo at any other Ethiopian places in Vancouver).
