We've always thought it could be fun to try axe throwing, but never knew where to go. When perusing Groupon, I found out about this place in Berkeley. I picked up a Groupon for two, and gifted another to the couple we'd be going with. When I went online to book, I had a hard time figuring out how to use the Groupons, so I called. I spoke with Peter, the manager, and he explained that in the small print that the Groupon was only good for Tuesdays. We'd already planned for Friday night, so Peter offered to accept the value of the Groupons toward entry, with a 15% discount off the full price. The storefront was easy to find, and there was on-street parking nearby. We showed up early to check in and fill out waivers. The check-in process was easy, and they honored the payment as agreed with Peter. It's not a big place, but there are 7 alleys for throwing, separated by chain link fencing for safety. Everyone throwing in our reservation window was gathered and briefed at the same time. The person explaining the rules and technique was clear and concise, and checked for understanding frequently. The facility was clean, well-lit, and there was music. They had fans in case it got warm, and each group was able to socially distance together at their own table near their alley. Each table had hand sanitizer, a clipboard and pen, and guidance for different ways to score if you ever got good enough to be able to. We were glad to be able to bring food in, and we purchased drinks from their beverage cooler. Those in our party who enjoy a beer while doing things like this would've liked to be able to have a couple, but it's understandable that alcohol and sharp things don't necessarily mix well. Perhaps a 2 drink limit would be a good compromise. One thing that could really use improvement is the hygiene of the axe handles. The grips were very worn, and in some cases falling apart. They. were pretty grimey, and there's no way they could sanitize them even if they tried. I'd recommend that they proactively replace grips with material that's easily maintained and cleaned. Not just because of COVID, but in general. We had a good time, and it was fun to figure out how to make the axes stick and which ones were our favorites. It's one of those things we wouldn't make a habit, and we may or may not choose to do it again. read more

Such a great experience! Came here with a group of friends on a weekday for the Glow in the Dark Axe Throwing and it was fantastic! You walk in and are greeted by friendly staff. Lucky for our group there were no other groups there so we had the place to ourselves. It's not a massive space but more than enough for our group. Staff explained how to throw the axe and all the safety points and we were left to throw some axes (they had a variety to choose from from sizes and weight). For half the time the lights were on and then the last half was glow in the dark. We were offered glow in the dark balloons and tape Only downside - the wooden targets were definitely on their last legs and needed to be changed. I would 100% recommend going there. read more

I got a Groupon for 5 people, 1 lane, and 1.5 hour. I also used a Groupon promo code when there was a Groupon sale for $25 off when you purchase a certain amount. The total price came out to be $64, and it was a really good deal because it was $12.80 per person, split among 5 people. It was simple and quick to book a time slot online with the Groupon code. When booking online or doing a walk-in, the current price is $30 per person for 1.5 hour. We arrived early before our designated time slot and was allowed to start early. The time our group took to sign the waiver, use the restroom prior to listening to the instructions, and listening to the safety instructions are accounted towards the 1.5 hour duration. I would recommend coming on a weekday when there's less people. I came on a Monday for the 8pm slot (last time slot of the night) and since there were empty lanes, we were able to use another empty lane as well. I like their music playlist playing in the background. The axe coach provided helpful tips in throwing the axe in many different ways: over hand, under hand, over the head, and throwing two axes at the same time with one axe per hand. I saw pictures of a few other axe throwing locations. From that comparison, this location looks to have a better safety set-up with a cage barrier between each lane and pellets on the ground of each lane which decreases the movement of the axe bouncing towards you. Overall, it was a fun bonding experience with friends. Our group all wore a plaid shirt for the hipster lumberjack look and took funny photos! read more

Came here for a team bonding on Friday with my company. It was my first time axe throwing and super easy to get the hang of after a few really bad throws. I ended up being really good once I got my technique down! The reservation process and check in is extremely easy. Someone from our team called ahead two weeks in advance, but it was so empty on Friday afternoon we probably could have just walked in. Keep in mind that you need to wear closed-toed shoes! When you arrive you have to fill out a waiver and include any children, then they go over all the rules and how to properly throw before setting you up in your own spot. I went to this place for an intern event and I was impressed by how organized the staff are. They go over safety rules, have you sign the waivers, then proceed to teach you how to throw an axe on the spot. Very cool! When my form was poor that I could not make the axe stick multiple times, one of the employees corrected my pose and I could now hit axes at a 75% accuracy, which is pretty good for someone who is bad at aiming. There are also booklets of games you can play with a group of people while throwing axes as well, if you want to spice things up. The price is pretty fair for the amount of fun you will have and the uniqueness factor. Axe throwing seems to be the new thing to do nowadays and I was so excited when I saw that AxeVentures was opening up a location near me. My friends and I decided to do a quadruple date. Making reservations online was a breeze. I would definitely recommend getting there early to look for parking (you know how it is in Berkeley) to take advantage of your full time slot. Of course our chronically late friend was running behind schedule, but good thing sessions are 1.5 hours long, so we still had plenty of time to play by the time she arrived. We got to share three lanes among eight people. The staff coached us on the do's and don'ts and then assisted each of us with our first throws to give us tips on form. Like many others sports and activities, make sure to follow through with your movements. Most of the girls were feeling a bit discouraged when they couldn't get the ax to stick, but after awhile they started getting a hang of it, so just keep practicing! Five points for bullseye, three points for the middle ring, and one point for the outer ring. Things got more exciting once we started playing one of the games. We played Countdown or at least that's what I think it was called and it was so much fun, because everyone got pretty competitive. The staff were all friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic. I've come here twice and the groups and I have had such a great time! I came with my family for Father's Day and with friends for a Groupon. I had problems with my Groupon code not working and soon after I sent an email, I was promptly assisted and met with great customer service. As for the experience itself, it was such a good time. The first 15 minutes are safety procedures, instructions on how to throw the axe, and any questions from the group. I liked how hands-off the experience was and the groups and I had a good time! I needed something different to do other than dinner parties for my boyfriend's birthday. I stumbled on AxeVentures while Yelping group activities. It was something active to do, and something different that no one in our group has tried before. I called them and talked to Peter about booking a surprise party of about 20 people. Peter was so helpful and made this booking so easy to do! I wasn't sure if all of my 20 people were coming, so he allowed me to book for 15 and pay on the night of my reservation for the remaining people. He also informed me that we would have most of the lanes in the back area where there are tables to set up for food that we could bring. I also asked if I could have two friends check in early so that they could set up, and he said it was perfectly fine. On the day of the party, the surprise went perfectly. They allowed everyone to check in and fill out forms, even though I wasn't there yet. My boyfriend was definitely surprised. They showed us to our lanes and demonstrated the correct way to throw the axe. After that, it was all us. It took everyone a few throws to get it right, but at the end of it we were all pros! We actually did a little competition in groups with the point system they had. The music was spot on. It was more 90's R&B and hip-hop, but sorta hard to hear with all the axes hitting the wood planks. Overall, I would DEFINITELY be making this a spot that I would come to for a fun group activity! The people will come around to teach you how to use the different axes. Do not be afraid - you will not chop your head off, lose a finger or have some random freak accident unless you are just that clumpsy. It is actually fun. You get a slot to yourself (or per group) - On neon night they give you multiple neon tapes that glow in the dark - you can wrap your fingers or the axes. Put x's on your targets. First of all, AxeVentures's great customer service began before I even set foot in the place. I had a question about how to make sure my friends got put in the same lane as us because they had to make their booking separately after I paid for mine. I emailed AxeVentures, and Peter promptly replied to me in like 20 minutes! He told me two different ways to do this: - Have your friends make the booking and then call the business when it's confirmed to let AxeVentures know they are with you. - Have your friends make their booking under your name (but they can use their own card to pay), so you'll have both bookings under your name, and AxeVentures will know to put the two bookings together. Once my friends made their booking under my name (and they paid with their credit card), I emailed AxeVentures and gave them my friend's confirmation number and asked them to put us in the same lane. They replied to confirm they got my message. We arrived early the night of our booking, so to kill the time, we played some Jenga and Connect Four. Finally it was our time slot, and everyone was taken to the back to hear an overview of rules and stuff. We received a little bit of individual coaching and were pretty much then left to throw axes and have fun for the next hour and a half. The employees were all very friendly, personable, and helpful. If I remember correctly, there's maybe 7 lanes total? The music playing in the background was great and helped contribute to a party atmosphere and fun night out. There was a lot of 90s hip hop and R&B, which is right up my alley. It was like taking a little trip back in time to my youth. I definitely had a LOT of fun! I would LOVE to come back because I need to get better at this. One word of warning though...there are no restrooms inside AxeVentures itself. So, if you need to pee, you'll need to go out to the restroom next door in some hallway. That bathroom was so grody. Like hella grody. I had a great time at Axe Ventures. It was a little smaller than I expected but nonetheless fun. One issue I had was that I noticed the employees were only offering the extra throwing shovels to the male visitors. I watched them go back and forth and only directly hand them to the men. Even with all the other couples, I noticed that all the men were handed the shovels (for difficulty throwing) first and their partners just watched. I was with a group of women and we weren't offered anything at all. It would've been nice if we were approached and given other throwing items to make the game more difficult and interesting. I was also stopped multiple times (4) during my throws and was asked if I needed any direction and guidance. I understand it's part of their job-- but I was clearly okay and was hitting my targets. I politely said no and continued on! They watched me hit a target and then came back. After the 3rd time, it was just a little intrusive and I wonder why they kept asking me for assistance when It clearly looked like I got the hang of it. This may seem like a small complaint, but it was big enough for me to notice the differences in how me and other women were subtly being treated. Still had a fun time, please try and directly offer difficulty throwing items to the women as well! (I appreciated Bianca's safety lesson! They were also kind enough to ask if everyone was okay, but left us afterward to have a fun time! She didn't hover around us but checked on us every now and then and went on her way.) read more

This was so much fun! I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and we had an absolute blast. I used a Groupon to purchase the 90 minutes with instruction. Our instructor was very informative and was able to help me when I couldn't quite figure it out right away. We threw for about 45 minutes before we were moved to another lane because a larger party came. Oh well, even though they said they would avoid us having to share a lane "at all costs." We purchased some balloons (careful, you have to blow them up and tape them to the wood yourself) and a bleeding zombie target. That was definitely fun, but I felt like they should have inflated the balloons at least. There are easy games you can play and paper with clipboards to use to keep track. I'm generally terrible at anything that requires hand-eye coordination, but AxeVentures taught me to throw their axes with a pretty good success rate! We had a large group but they took a lot of time teaching those of us who needed help. At one point they even switched out an axe for me for a smaller one since their normal size was too heavy for my weak arms. :'D This was a good motivator for actually working out when I say I'm going to. Time passes quickly when you're having fun! The hour and a half felt like a good amount of time though. The only downside was that it was a hot day and there was really no relief from it inside their small, crowded building. Be prepared and wear light clothing! One of our group members also commented that there weren't as many types of axes for throwing as he's experienced at other, similar axe throwing places. Overall, the employees were super nice and helpful, they had a bathroom I could use (yay!), and the experience was different and fun! AxeVentures is a great time! I've been with friends and family ranging in age from 18 to 72, and with varying degrees of fitness - and everyone had a blast and was sticking throws into the targets within the first 10-15 minutes. We tend to get reservations ahead of time. The staff greets folks warmly, and are just really fun people who know exactly how to ease newbies into things during the safety demonstrations at the beginning. After this, you get right down to throwing. There are separate lanes for groups and individual, which keeps everyone active and safe. There's a variety of axes for throwing, from small and light up to heftier double-bladed models. I find it really fun to switch things up - once I'm sticking throws consistently with one axe, I move over to one that's really different. Adding to the fun atmosphere, there's tunes cranking out through the speakers, and the staff are happy to take requests. Perhaps some Viking Metal to set the appropriate mood? With our local bowling alley and billiards hall shut permanently due to !*$&#%#! Covid, we're damn lucky to have AxeVentures around for a good time. read more
