The issues I had stemmed from the quote for the demo more than doubling after the first day. Communication and time management was an issue. The house was very dirty when I did the walkthrough to the point that it was hard to tell how polished the floors were and I had to clean areas with a wet towel so that I could see better. All of the walls will also need to be repainted. Be prepared for a lot of excuses through the process, I was told countless times that they were losing money on this job which seemed pretty unprofessional to me, and I suppose suggests that they are doing me a favor? A businesses inability to properly quote a job and account for the time needed to finish is not a customer's fault. When I mentioned the walls and how there was scouring on the floors, they said it was because they were trying to get it done fast for me, so again, the reason it was not cleaned and that some areas were not done correctly was because of me. If you point out any issue or run into anything during the process, you will most likely be told of all the reasons why the job was not what they expected and that they are doing more than they bargained for.

It took us a long time to make decisions so we were not able to use the bathroom for about 6 months. Juan's team worked over a period of 2-3 weeks, and did their work quickly. Juan was communicative, reliable, and did what he said he would do. His pricing was very competitive and fair. He recommended that we work with ProSource Austin for tile selection and John M. helped us with the tile, grout, and other items needed to complete the tile project. With every bathroom remodel, there are always surprises but I think Juan helped us through anything that came up. They helped us fix a builder error with the bathtub. His team did all the demo, tile work, and installation of the baseboards. Juan also arranged for plumbers, someone to create a quartz shower bench topper, and a glass company for the shower door. We did hire a painter and drywall repair company on our own but only because they were able to do it while handling another project for us. We are pleased with the work - the photos are not of the finished bathroom because we are still waiting on the delivery of a vanity cabinet from a vendor and then will finally be done. We didn't remodel the entire room as the cost of granite, new cabinets, electrical work, and fixtures is pretty sky high, so this was like a 1/2 remodel. The tile is beautiful and we are very happy to have our bathroom back! I will try to remember to come back and update photos whenever we can finally get our vanity installed. I did much of the work myself (design, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC), but I knew the tile work was way beyond my capabilities--curbless steam shower, heated tile flooring, marble pencil trim and skirting. I chose JA Tile based on a strong recommendation from a trusted friend who has done multiple renovation projects in Austin. I'm very happy with the decision and completely pleased with the outcome. Juan, Giovanni, and Ivan were very easy to work with. Juan is a good communicator and very prompt and reliable--exemplary professionalism. Giovanni and Ivan did most of the work, and are true craftsmen. Our two dogs had absolutely destroyed our ten year old carpet, and we were long overdue for a replacement. More carpet, for maximum dog wallowing/belly rubs? Or deny them these simple pleasures and go for hardwood? As our budget would have it, neither; we ended up opting for vinyl plank. Andrea was very helpful during the selection process, sent us home with a few samples and within 20 minutes we had a winner. A few days later she came by to take measurements, collect our deposit and give us an arrival date. The date came and went. "Well, no worries" I thought, Fashion Floors was in the midst of moving their showroom, this was far from a carpet emergency (is there such a thing?) and they hadn't cashed our deposit check anyway. After a few rounds of phone tag, we settled on an install date! Typically this would be the type of project I would tackle myself (and take months to actually complete), but in this case the install included hauling off the old carpet, leveling the subfloor, as well as removal/re installation of the furniture. I figured it was money well spent. We were told our installers would be here between 9-10am. You already know where this is going. They showed up a little after noon, but to their credit, they started busting ass and had the job nearly complete in five hours. Now, it's the "nearly" part that's key here. Apparently they had either forgotten or not been given all of their supplies, so they left for an hour, came back and worked until nearly 8pm. Kudos for the tenacity and the fact that they completed it in one day, but it would've been nicer not to have to rearrange the entire day. We finally made it to their new showroom to go drop off our final payment, only to find the place dark, doors locked at 10am on a Friday. We hopped next door to TacoDeli for a leisurely brunch, came back at 11 to find the place still closed. Bizarre. This necessitated another trip the next week to get these folks paid. Pretending to be outraged on the internet seems to be the newest fad, but you'll get none of that from me. There were some minor inconveniences here and there, but at the end of the day we are very happy with the material and installation, and the new flooring really did transform our bedroom. They had to remove the tiles/carpet and then had to install the LVP in my brand new home. The guy who turned up to get this job done did not even have minimum sense to seal down the areas to avoid the dust from tiles to spread. Also, owner had told me he would send shoe moulds but then did not. I had to follow up on that and get it on time. After the LVP installation , I was so disappointed to see a lot of dents/paint peels off the walls everywhere he took off the tiles. The shoe moulds was in a different color and did not go well with the baseboard. Owner promised me to correct with paint touch ups but never showed up after collecting the check. I realised only at the end how the owner could offer me better pricing. He balanced the good quality product with cheap labor. Owner does not respond to any future queries. I had to hire painters at my expense to fix the damages. I would not recommend this business to my friends.

In my initial outreach, I explicitly stated that this was a virtual consultation and outlined the scope in detail. Ryan responded that he could handle the work and was interested. We confirmed logistics multiple times, including the evening before and again the morning of the appointment. My client rearranged her schedule, and I rearranged mine to coordinate a live virtual walkthrough at the property. Ryan did not arrive at the agreed-upon time. After the scheduled time passed, I called -- no answer. I sent a message asking him to confirm arrival -- no response. Two and a half hours later, he sent a message stating he had been "warned to stay away from these types of jobs" and apologized. There was no prior indication of hesitation, concern, or limitation in scope. If he was unwilling or uncomfortable with the nature of the job, that should have been communicated before confirming and causing both myself and my client to restructure our day. Reliability and communication are non-negotiable in client-facing industries. Unfortunately, this experience demonstrated neither. I cannot recommend based on this interaction. ***Update*** *Ryan attempted to dodge accountability by replying on Thumbtack that he was not given a clear scope. Melde Construction company's motto "Love your home. Enjoy the journey" is nothing but a facade…read moreafter the experience our family endured from May 2022 to December 2025. The quaint white building on 6th street, showcasing yearly "Austin Best Builder" signs with owner and employees who wear black tee shirts that say "Humility & Curiosity & Diligence & Confidence" is simply not at all what we experienced. We recently settled a six-figure lawsuit against Melde Construction, (new owner) Bernie Calcote, its former COO Nic Bell, its former Project Manager Jesse Marsh and several subcontractors. Mr. Calcote and Mr. Bell were never deposed under oath after much legal maneuvering and boxes of evidence and hours of witness testimony are not easily accessed publicly. Therefore, we feel an obligation to warn other potential clients about key facts before possibly hiring Melde construction or any of the people involved. Melde: 1) did not keep the project notebook required by the contract that would facilitate us to see invoices for labor & materials 2) used incorrect building materials 3) did not follow architectural plans 4) charged us for work they never ultimately performed 5) made errors that could have caused catastrophic fire and/or carbon monoxide poisoning 6) repeatedly lied by omission about water intrusions in the house while family lived elsewhere If this was simply a situation of a construction project that took too long and went over budget, or if Melde had taken responsibility, we would not be voicing our concerns publicly. Melde blamed the homeowners and refused to be accountable for its actions. Homeowners are still trying to solve Melde's errors, among the most egregious issues: -concealed water damage to original hardwood floors after failing to protect home during at least two storms (fall 2022) -installed incorrect furnace in attic that would have caused fire if activated -charged for an electrical service upgrade that did not occur -installed brick type we did not order, had workman chisel to look weathered instead of ordering weathered brick -placed new HVAC condensers without discussing placement -painted over damage to the ceiling in the garage (garage was not within project scope) -installed doors & handles on the addition that don't match existing doors & handles which are directly adjacent to addition -charged DOUBLE original quote for metal handrails then did not paint with direct to metal acrylic enamel -did not honor warranty for windows, left project with multiple hardware, latches and weather strips missing Before entering into contract with Melde Construction (Bernie Calcote bought business from Leon Melde in July 2016), feel free to contact us for more explanation and details. Two of the other companies told me the balcony was beyond the scope of their abilities. As for Melde, I knew they did home renovations, so I wasn't sure if our balcony was a job they'd do. Nick was able to come out within a day or two to give us a quote, and he assured me that they could do high-end renovations, build a dog-house, and everything in between (including the balcony).
