We walked in last minute for a car rental after a different company screwed us over, and we left this location in ten minutes with a clean, reliable vehicle. Staff was polite and helpful to us, both over the phone and in-person. Just a heads up that you will need a bank issued debit card-no chime or anything like that. I also felt like we got a reasonable rate too considering we literally walked in and asked for whatever was available. They do require you to return the car with a full tank of gas, but they offered for us to pay up front what a current tank of gas cost in case the price of gas rose up by the time we got back, which I thought was nice. Overall good experience, I would go through them again in the future. read more

Your company & staff suck! I rented a car for work at this location & had to use roadside assistance due to a flat tire. I paid $417 for that tire on my credit card then 2 days later they filed a claim on my insurance! Never again! This doesn't even deserve the 1 star! read more

Update: I disputed the unexplained cleaning fee with my bank, and their fraud department investigated and reversed the charges. Goes to show they will charge you a fee and pray you eat the charges with no evidence. What a thrashy business all the way around. They should be ashamed of how they conduct themselves. Just look at the reviews and all the people they have ripped off over the years and on other review websites. Disgusting. read more

Very rude when checking in to rent a car I had reserved in advance. Insisted I pay an additional 39 a day for their insurance. Have rented cars my entire life and never did this, I have car insurance. The clerk then scolded me and lectured me like I was a criminal. Still allowed me to rent the car. I will not be back though. The sales pitch for their insurance is based on threats, intimidation and poor customer treatment. read more

I have never given any company a negative review, but this Avis office is so over-the-top bad, I just had to say something. If there was a negative star category, I'd be giving them a perfect ten. On July 7, 2025, I went online and rented a car from Avis. Since I did not need or want the optional Loss Damage Waiver (herein after referred to as the LDW), I declined it. However, when I went to pick up the car that I had already paid for, the Avis agent refused to rent it to me. He claimed that unless I had full coverage on my personal vehicle, I did not have the option to decline the optional LDW. And he said this even though nowhere in the Rental Agreement does it state that the renter must have full coverage on their personal vehicle in order to decline the optional LDW. Instead, the Rental Agreement clearly states that the LDW is an "optional product or service" and there are no stipulations or exclusions attached to that statement. Moreover, an Avis agent just can't verbally make up a bunch of conditions and terms and then claim: "This is company policy." I didn't agree to any verbal policy. I signed a written agreement, and all written agreements must have full disclosure; nondisclosure renders the agreement invalid even if it is signed. So, I told the agent that if I had needed or wanted this insurance I would have purchased it when I originally paid for this rental online, but, as I stated earlier, I declined it. Nonetheless, no amount of reasoning could persuade the agent to give me the keys. He simply told me that unless I paid for the additional LDW, I would not be getting the vehicle. Now at this point I was getting very frustrated with this entire transaction. I felt like just cancelling the rental and walking out. However, that was not an option since I had already paid for the vehicle and Avis does not give refunds on late cancellations. In addition, I had a long trip ahead and I had appointments to keep. I needed this vehicle, and the Avis agent knew it. He was holding all the proverbial cards (or in this case the keys), so I signed the Rental Agreement under unwarranted emotional duress. In my opinion, this goes way beyond high pressure sales tactics. In fact, there's a name for this kind of conduct--it's called extortion. In other words, the Springfield office Avis agent was holding my vehicle, the vehicle I had already paid for, as "hostage" until I paid the insurance "ransom". All my attempts to rectify this situation with Avis customer service have failed. One Avis Rep. even went so far as to claim that "Our records show that the original reservation was booked with the acceptance of the LDW (Lost Damage Waiver)." This is simply not true because, as I said before, when I made the original online reservation, I declined the LDW. The original online reservation clearly shows NO additional LDW protection and NO additional LDW charges. Their typical response to me has been: "The customer after listening to the explanation, agreed to take the base coverage on our vehicle and both signed and initialed for these charges and the estimated total." Now while it's true that I did sign the Rental Agreement accepting the LDW, I did not sign it because I wanted or needed the LDW; rather, I signed it because I wanted and needed the vehicle and the Avis agent made it very clear that only way I was going to get that vehicle was to accept the LDW. BTW, if you're still thinking about renting from this Avis office, make sure you use a bathroom before you get there because they definitely will not allow you to use theirs. Their bathroom is off limits to customers (you know... "Company Policy"). I had just driven for two hours and I had sort of bathroom emergency, but that didn't matter to them. They just told me to go to the gas station across the street and use theirs. And this is customer service? Not even making a bathroom exception for a 75-year-old lady?? Pretty poor. This was a very bad experience for me and why this Avis location is allowed to operate this way is unimaginable! read more

I set up a reservation online and it quoted about $36. I get in there and the guy said you are required to buy the coverage for $74. Since I was on a time constraint and needed a truck that day and didn't have time to look around, and so I agreed. When I brought the truck back, I signed (and have the receipt for) $109.90. That already was grossly overpriced for using it for only two hours. They then go so far as to charge my card $165 for the "deposit". When I called customer service, they said I will be receiving a payment back in about a week. This is a complete rip off and puts me in a financial hard spot. Not only am I being grossly overcharged, they actually take the full amount in total from you (only to be refunded later), rather than just putting a hold on your account as businesses normally do. DO NOT RENT A TRUCK FROM HERE. read more

I had my reservation booked for 4 months in advance online. Come to the day where we are supposed to pick up our car and when we go to check in the guy at the counter tells me he's gonna have to cancel our reservation all because it's under my name with my husband's card not one time was I notified in the four months that this was not allowed. Avis decided to let me think the last four months I was covered with my car rental. As I'm standing there at the counter all he says he can do is have me call corporate. We can't switch the name. We can't have my husband come up here and get the car. I can't give him my credit card. Basically nothing can be done other than calling corporate. I called corporate & the lady I had on the phone did not help in one single way other than offering me every refund, which is unacceptable because I am needing to leave today. She said I could have a refund back in 5 to 7 days which is very unacceptable. As that would be 5-7 into my trip. I told the lady do you think I can just ask for more days off? Move my whole vacation around? I told her I booked the car first then booked our whole vacation around the car rental! They did not offer a different car. I asked multiple times why can't we just get a different car with my credit card. First thing she says they don't have another car available??? Okay so where's the "car" that I just had booked for the last 4 months??? Please explain how you cancel my reservation while I'm at the location and then proceed to tell me there's not one vehicle that they have other than a 12 person van. Did YOU guys over book? & now I'm paying the price blaming it on me? This is all very unacceptable. The way the lady talked to me at corporate was very unprofessional and unacceptable. While I was inside the office, I told them I don't understand how this can happen when I did exactly the same thing the year before in July as well. I told him I booked it and use my husband's card and the guy at the desk told me that there's no way I did that and I told him yes I did. The lady stepped in and said that last year they did have an old system and it allowed them to do that but this year it's a new system and it's not allowing it so I looked back at the guy. & said I promise you I did exactly the same thing as I did last year I told them how am I supposed to know as a customer that you cannot use a different card when you can use a different card on any other website? I just can't believe how this company handle the situation and how they acted like it was my fault the whole time. With all this being said I went down the road and ending up getting a car from enterprise & they were amazing. They told me that they lost count how many times a week they have people from Avis due to the same issues or similar issues of them not having their car available. Avis do better. read more

If I could give no stars I would. I would never rent from Avis again and advise everyone else I know to do the same. They sell insurance with vehicles and then don't stand behind the policy. Their customer service is an absolute joke. I bought the full coverage insurance (which was more than the rental and gas combined) and then they tried to come after my insurance and myself for $1500 when the insurance I paid for through them coverages the damage (windshield crack smaller than a pinky nail shaving). I will ALWAYS go through Enterprise moving forward. Beware! read more

I should have looked at the reviews before renting!! WORST customer service EVER!!! I was quoted $.22/mile- agreement said $.25 - was told NO way could they change it!! We reserved a car online using Priceline. When we arrived at the Avis location rental counter in Springfield, Missouri 1210 W Sunshine St, we were informed that because I had an out of state drivers license I had to have a second form of government issued ID to receive the car. I did not have this, and could not get it because I had just flown in. Priceline did not notify us of this, and we never received any communication from the location saying this would be required. We were now stuck in a city that was an hour drive from our vacation spot with no transportation and all other locations were out of vehicles. When we called the main Avis hotline for support, we were told that because the Springfield location was an "independently" operated facility they could make up their own rules and there was nothing Avis could do. Avis also made not effort to make things right and help us find a new rental car. Additionally, Priceline made no effort to help us. On Avis' website it says "OUR ONLY PLAN IS TO MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOURS" They did not live up to this in any way. This location apparently has this problem so often, they have a 50" TV in the office saying "If we can't validate your credentials we cannot rent you a car". This location should be contacting everyone who makes a reservation, they should lose their Avis credentials, be removed from Priceline, a combination of those, or all 3. I will NEVER rent from Avis again. Up until now, they have been my go to agency. read more

I'm only reviewing this location's medium-term rental offer, which is a joke. I was told the guy who oversees month-to-month rental, Loren, isnt available very often. This is an understatement. I called and left a voicemail after sending an email about the rental. No response to either. Today I took the bus over to Avis to investigate, to be told Loren in on vacation this week. Next week he is back. Seems unprofessional of Loren to be this unavailable to customers, and I will rent short term elsewhere. read more

The van we received was the most basic model and much lower quality than any can we have gotten from Hertz. It didn't have Bluetooth to connect our phones for music. AWFUL service! We rented a car for one day at $58. When we picked it up we said we might need it for another day or two because our car was in the shop. They said that additional days would cost $150 a day. The car they gave us was dirty and had one tire that was so low we had to stop and fill it with air. We drove it around town for the one day, filled the tank (paid cash and didn't get a receipt because we never do for gas). When we returned the car they charged us an additional $15.99 because we drove less than 75 miles and didn't have PROOF that we had filled the tank. The tank was FULL but they said we had to prove we had purchased gas. Also, when we returned the car and told them that the car was dirty and had one low tire, the guy simply shrugged and said "ok". Not even an apology. Terrible place! read more

Do not rent a car from here. This was the worst rental experience I ever had! I had the car rented for 3 days, but brought it back early only needing it for 1.75 days - I parked it right in front of the office door dropping my keys and paper work they gave me in drop box. I expected to be charged for 2 days but they charged me for 3 days plus a penalty blaming me (as I didn't have a pen) saying I didn't write mileage and time I dropped off as keys in the box?! I reminded them I that they have security camera footage. When I called the female I talked to started scolding me saying it was my fault?!She ranted then said she couldn't be my mother and hold my hand to fill out the paper, and hung up on me. Then I called "Lawrence the mgr" told him about my conversation with his customer service employee and told him I was offended and he then proceeded to scold me and blame me for the overcharge! read more

Awful customer service. We ordered a mid-size car and the lady at the counter who said she was the supervisor said we could only have a Ford ranger or pay $65 to upgrade to a Jeep. After a night of flight cancellations, postponements and reroutes from Dallas/Ft Worth to Kansas City, we ultimately landed in Springfield MO. Our car remained at the Kansas City International Airport. Early the following morning, my wife called and rented a car via the Avis online number, for the Springfield location on West Sunshine. After providing her information, she was generously offered a VA discount by the lady on the phone after my wife informed Lady that I was a Veteran. The lady had taken my wife's credit card and made the charges, giving us the VA discount. She was aware the this was my wife's credit card, and that I was the Veteran. After taking a cab to the West Sunshine location, we were met by Mr. Loren Davison. As I paid the cab driver and entered the location, Mr. Davison was waving his arms and raising his voice in an aggressive manner at my wife. Each time she tried to speak, he interrupted loudly regarding the fact that she had paid for the car with HER credit card, the discount was in my name, we would be assigned a $150 fee to cancel, or we would be without a car, and it "WAS NOT HIS PROBLEM". As I observed her attempt to work with this situation, and clarify the details, Mrs. Davison continued to interrupt, raise his voice as he literally jumped around behind the counter, waving his arms and gesturing in our direction. At this point my wife broke down and left the room going to the seating area to the left on the other side of the room. I followed and tried to calm her to determine what had happened. Eventually, she was able to explain that Mr. Davison had lost his temper immediately upon her telling him that she had the car rented and her name and that he told her she would not be getting the car, and it "WAS NOT HIS PROBLEM!". He had further shared that she WOULD need to pay the $150 cancellation, prior to being re-assigned another vehicle. I returned to the desk area in an attempt to reason with him, but was interrupted, yelled at and told we would "have to call the 1-800 number, that there was nothing he could do". There were a number of questions I posed, the first being if we could just pay full price, and forget the Veterans discount. Mr. Davison would not only not allow me to finish, but became more excitable as the conversation went on. My wife then asked a question or made a statement to which he screamed at her again. I had exercised a great deal of patience to this point, when I informed Mr. Davison that he was "behaving like an ass, and needed to calm himself". We were at this then told We would "not be getting one of his cars"- (a matter of which he and I could agree) and we were to "leave the premises immediately". I disengaged from Mr. Davison and began attempting to call the cab company to find alternate transportation. It was cold and raining outside, yet Mr. Davison demanded we exit the premises and stand outside. After pointing out that it was in the 30's and raining, and I was going to call a cab, he called threatened, and ultimately did, call the Springfield Police, stating he was having us arrested for trespassing. At this time we gathered our things and exited the building while Davison smugly watched from behind the counter. We both have reason to travel regularly with our positions, and use various car rentals, including Avis. We have never been treated in such a manner by someone claiming to be the manager of a business be it car rental-or otherwise. The man was not only irascible, he bordered on the unhinged. A quick google search of Loren Davison Springfield Missouri Car rental, will show that we are not the first to have gotten on the bad side of Mr. Davison. He apparently worked for Budget prior to his current position. Save yourself an issue and do not do business with this guy. read more

It occurred May 3rd and I rented a car from Avis for less than 24 hours while mine was in the shop. Car was dirty when I picked it up, but nothing major. A pair of glasses and a necklace were left and some dirt on the floor, but it was 10 minutes till closing and I didn't think much of it. Also there was no smell of smoking otherwise I would have refused the car to avoid charges. 2 weeks later I receive a letter that they are charging me the $450 cleaning fee due to "evidence of smoking". I have never smoked a day in my life, and can provide a doctor note saying that. We have tried disputing it with the credit card and the company but they will not cancel the charge. I told them upon returning the car there were some glasses and a necklace left by the previous driver but they didn't seem to care. Now I'm paying for their mistake of not inspecting or even trying to clean the car before I rented it. If they had even looked at the car before I rented it, they would have cleaned out the glasses left in the front cup holder (the one where the ashes apparently are now even though they weren't there when I rented it, according the pictures) and the necklace was just sitting on the backseat. I have read where this charge has been applied to many customers who have never smoked either. They need to stop doing this read more

Can I give zero stars? Worst customer service ever. Ever. We rented a car and were charged many extra fees including one for a parking ticket...that we had paid to the city it was received in immediately upon getting it. The ticket fee was charged by Avis to the credit card two full months after we returned the car. Everyone on the phone gave us the run around, each time we called. We were transferred to different departments. No one seemed to care at all about the issues and no one helped us. We still have the charges on our credit card. We decided to go through Avis to rent a car since we had a horrible experience with another company in the past. They made the process so easy and the staff was really easy to work with. I wasn't really happy about the $100 hold they didn't tell me about that they needed to put on my card until the day of because I hadn't budgeted for that, but they did reimburse that hold the day we brought the car back. Horrible place! Greedy bunch of liars! I don't do reviews unless I am satisfied or extremely unsatisfied. We came from California to attend my brother in laws wedding. We reserved a car at enterprise but we need to upgrade to a van. They ran out of big cars (that's what you call good business) so we ended up renting from Avis. We got a good Kia van. Runs good and clean almost brand new. I came in first to tell the person up front that my husband is just filling up the gas, he can't check it out until the van is at the parking lot. The room stinks like wet socks and very dirty. My husband came and the guy told him that he's an hour late and will be charged $59.99. Another guy said he has until 1:30pm (it's only 1:10pm) due to what they called "grace period". But the manager said no and insisted that we were an hour late. 1 day cost $79.99, we should have kept the van for another day but they already typed all the information and they didn't even offer. Who ever owns this place will go bankrupt! You don't know how to take care of your customers. Springfield is a small town, business like yours survive through visitors from other states and the way to run this business is awful. I have seen a lot of businesses that had shut down and if you continue to be deceiving just to earn extra $$$, you will end up loosing the whole business. We reserved a Toyota Avalon on Avis's national website, and we payed in advance. We had never rented a car before from the Sunshine location before. When we arrived at the Sunshine Avenue location, I was surprised that the location is not in the best part of town, and the check in building is full of smoke. However, I did not let that bother me. We also had driven our local car, and parked it in their lot.... The Avalon we picked up was a beautiful car but the drivers side seat had a broken plastic peace hanging off the back. I did not appreciate that, and Avis did not offer to give us a discount for renting the car with a broken part. I still did not let that bother me to much. We rented the car about 1 o'clock on a Wed. For a two week rental. Fast forward 2 weeks. The trip was nice. We arrived on the Avis lot about 1 o'clock and started to unload the car. After a few minutes I went into to the Avis building to officially check in. We had cleaned the car well beforehand. Everything seemed to go well. Then, just today I look at our credit card statement and we have a extra 38.71 added to the bill. My wife called and the manager informed her that we were late in turning in the car by about 10 minutes. We were shocked. What further shocked us is that he admitted he saw us in the lot well before we checked in unloading the car. So basically a loophole technicality that was never explained to us has cost us another $38.71. We were in the lot on time. No one came out to greet us, and so while we were unloading the car the grace period time ran out.....and we were charged. This is horrid customer service. They knew we were on the lot on time. They never came out to greet us. When I finally went in to officially check in it was over the grace period. Makes me wonder what would have happened if we took another 10 minutes to go into there office, how much more would that have cost? Why did they knowing we were on their lot on time not come out and check us in like every other rent a car company. Why would the manager knowing we were there on time do this? Did they not come get us knowing of this technicality so we would be overcharged? Bottom line is, they have lost our business. We have a lot of clients who trust us, and they will loose their business.....all this for $38.71.....they are going to loose a lot of business now. read more
