Her very first words were, "Why are you here?" -- no greeting, no courtesy, just instant hostility. We were only there to take a quick photo of the outside and look at the grounds, as we were considering renting the venue for a wedding. We're from out of town and were in the area just for the weekend, but she immediately accused us of trespassing instead of simply asking what we needed. To make things worse, she blocked the driveway so we couldn't turn around properly, forcing us to back through the grass rather than letting us move forward a couple of feet to the wider part of the drive. I'm also quite sure her behavior was influenced by my alternative haircut and color, which made the experience feel even more judgmental and discriminatory. We will never come back here or recommend this place to anyone.

The tour guide did his best, but his script was rather mediocre. His presentation was repetitive and I had a hard time hearing him over the sounds of the air conditioning. You were not allowed to take photographs unless you requested permission prior to taking each one you wanted. The tour opened with a short video which could have been interesting except the narrator was unintelligible. I was able to decipher about 10 words during the 6 minute film. There are a lot of stairs on the tour (no elevator) so this would not be a good tour for anyone with mobility issues.

Smallin Civil War Cave - June 2023

Review of Smallin Civil War Cave Tour: We attended the…read moreSmallin Civil War Cave tour today and were unfortunately very disappointed. Upon arrival, we were told the first tour would begin at 10:00 a.m., but it did not actually leave until 10:20 a.m. because the group had to wait for late arrivals. Once they arrived, the tour was delayed further so they could return to their cars to get coats. The tour itself was expected to last one hour, but it extended to over an hour and a half due to frequent stops and off-topic discussions. Very little time was spent covering the actual history of the cave or its Civil War significance, which is the primary reason we chose this tour. Instead, the guide spoke extensively about working as a park ranger in New Mexico for the federal government, Roswell, and other caves in other states. While this may be interesting in a different setting, it felt unrelated and distracting given the advertised focus of this tour. Additionally, the guide stated he would not take photos for guests using their phones, explaining that a phone could go into the water. At the time, we were on a stable walkway, and this restriction felt unnecessary. Overall, the experience did not deliver on the Civil War history advertised, and the lack of focus, delays, and extended runtime made the tour frustrating. It was not worth the $33.95 per person for the two of us. We would not choose to attend again and would not recommend it to visitors seeking an educational Civil War-focused cave tour.

Our guide, Levi, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and provided a lot of history and information about the cave and the area. He did a great job. If you can't handle a lot of stairs or inclines, this cave would suit you, as the walk is short and mostly flat. However, for the $29/person entrance fee, it's just not worth it. Most every other cave/cavern in the area is better. For maybe $19/person, it would be worth the stop.

Tour is very well organized. The Bear Creek Winery is in an amazing location with great views from the deck. Driver was very friendly although I'd recommend being proactive about asking questions about the area as the tasting and dinner is the focus, this isn't a sightseeing tour per se outside the 4 stops. Dinner was downtown in the new area of Branson and food and service were good but not "gourmet" about what you'd expect as this isn't a foodie tour. You have a choice of chicken, steak, or salmon. Given the reasonable price for the whole experience though, if you are a steak connoisseur I'd skip the steak, not bad at all, but the Salmon and Chicken are in my opinion better options if you are finicky about your steak.

For the price (just under $700) the tour was not worth it. A lot of lights were out during our drive thru at Great Wolf Lodge. We then went through the Joy lights that were pirate themed. Not impressed with either display. At one of the gingerbread stops, our group went to grab some waters/soda, when I informed our driver, she said she had bottled water the whole time. On our way back to our drop off location, we experienced a blown tire. Our driver tried contacting her company and she said no one would answer her. I ended up texting the owner informing him that we were on the side of the road with a flat and no one would answer to help her. I received no response but moments after the texts were sent, our driver received a phone call. My husband and brother in law ended up changing the tire so we could be on our way. Our driver told us the owner would be in contact to "take care of the incident and help she received from our group". A week after the tour, I had to reach out to the company because I did not hear from them. The owner Joe called and had a list of excuses as to why he didn't reach out. He also told me that when he received word of us on the side of the road, he had to step out of a show he was viewing while on vacation with his wife. He told me he fired our driver and she had our contact information. He didn't want to tell me how much he would refund so he didn't insult us. he wanted us to tell him how much we wanted. After discussing with our group, we decided on a reimbursement amount and I texted Joe (the owner). We came upon an amount by saving someone from changing the tire and also not missing our driver's second tour that evening. My second text was to confirm he could just refund my credit card and not mail a check and he said yes. Another week goes by with no credit card refund. I texted the owner again and he finally says he can't refund us the amount we decided on but could give us half of what we requested. He'd also refund us our credit card fee. When I asked if he had my card info, he said yes from our initial registration. Ironic that he now has my info but didn't when it came time to reach out to us initially. If you do utilize this company, hopefully everything goes smoothly so you don't have to deal with the owner to settle things. Good luck!

We stayed the first night in Springfield; in the morning I proposed visiting Wilson's Creek. We visited Branson with family friends back in 2010, then got a Silver Dollar City season pass and visited more times in 2011; each drive we'd see "Battlefield" references around Springfield. Not knowing much about Civil War his story, a couple years later I ordered a book about from MissouriLife magazine about Missouri in the Civil War. I share a brief summary... - Missouri was delayed its entrance in to the Union due to slavery, which was not envisioned to ever expand beyond the original colonies - The Missouri Compromise allowed Maine to enter as a free state and Missouri as a slave state - 80% of Missourians opposed slavery - I did not know until I visited Wilson's Creek that most of the slaves in Missouri were located around the Missouri River and a bit north, with the southern exception being in and around Springfield - The Governor elected in 1860 ran on a pledge to remain in the Union, then changed his direction, and in his Inauguration Speech (!!), recommended joining the south - The State government had apparently anticipated the possibility of such an action, and dissolved the Government and put in place a temporary government; the Governor-no-more left the capital with confederate sympathizers - In St. Louis, home to many Germans who did not come to this great nation to see slavery, and who actively opposed it - Union soldiers sought to protect military supplies at the St. Louis Arsenal; sadly resulting in a situation that saw many killed one day, including women and children - Days after Fort Sumpter started the Civil War, battles continued in Missouri - Here at Wilson's Creek, confederate sympathizers had organized and were planning to attack Union troops; Union troops planned to find and attach the southern troops... they found one another sooner than. planned... the battle claimed the life of many, including the first Union General to die in the war - General Lyon Wilson's Creek National Battlefield has a wonderful Visitor's Center, with a helpful and educational staff, a drive with many canons and sites to see, including the Ray family house, which became the field hospital to help the wounded. The docent here shared got insights into the costs that war, around the world, also inflicts on what public... whose food is eaten by soldiers, land is camped upon, etc. This is definitely worth a visit that can be brief, or can last hours. Thank you, National Parks Service, and the Wilson's Creek Park staff! ----- -----
