I had a great experience at this Avis in Barstow, the first week of May 2014. I arrived without a reservation, and I needed a 4WD SUV ASAP. The manager(Darrin) was very friendly and helpful. He had one on the lot, he did price-matching to the guys(Enterprise) across the street, and he even took two trips with me to my local hotel so I wouldn't have to leave my current car at his business for 4 days. The car(Ford Explorer) was a rock star and I could not have asked for more, as it handled every crazy road I threw at it. When I returned, Darrin even gave me an unasked-for discount because I returned the car so clean. Darrin is a real people person. Giving 1 star simply because I can't give it 0 stars and people need to be warned of this awful place. They will rent you a vehicle with the check engine light on, and blame it on a sensor, only to try and blame the customer later. They will also cancel a reservation last minute because they refuse to work, even though Priceline has their vehicle rentals on sale because they have so many vehicles sitting around. They give the one customer they rarely get a hard time and charge them extra, just to not have to work because ripping off customers makes them money. The only reason why I'm rating this one star is because I have to if I could give no stars I would...The people here absolutely suck don't rent from them they told me I had until noon to bring the car back then when I brought it in at 11 o'clock they told me that I had to pay another day because the car was supposed to be back by 9:30.. The customer service sucks the lady at the front was a really tall rude hispanic lady and had a very foul odor to her body and a very bad attitude to match. We came in to exchange a car that was dangerous to drive and we were told we needed to drive it to a another location for exchange so we came to the nearest Avis as they advised. The worst part is the agent's response, "Well it got you here". This is the second time this trip that we needed to exchange the car not due to anything we've done, but due to us just unluckily getting bad cars. The manager Michelle at this location is very rude on 04/26/2024 I called to confirm my reservation and she placed me on hold and then hung up on me. I tried calling back and she ignored my phone call. When I used a neighbors phone to call again then she answer. She is a mean person she can never keep the same assistance so that's a clear sign of how mean she is. I had very bad experience with two of their cars that last time I rented the. One of the cars I rented there stopped on me in the middle of the freeway i could have lost my life the way the car's were driving on the freeway. They don't even take good care of their cars they don't even get them checked out they just rent them out to people with out even caring if the car is in a good condition to rent out. My family's Turo rental broke down an hour from Barstow and I booked a one way rental through the Avis app to get us back home after our Big Bear weekend. As I rode in a very expensive taxi that picked us up to get to this Avis they called and said that they were "not honoring any one way rentals" per management. I was confused as I booked it through their own portal and asked why and was only told that it is per management. I asked if I could alter the reservation then to return to them on Sunday and was told she couldn't do it, I would have to call the 1-800 number. After cancelling, re-booking and arriving I saw this location had about 15 cars on site and no one renting in the office (it was after 4pm and they closed at 5). While Bertha at the desk (who is the only person I spoke to the whole time) upgraded my wife, baby and I to a minivan (which was nice of her), I was still upset at the lack of explanation for not being able to honor my original directly booked Avis reservation. I told Bertha we wanted to enjoy time in Big Bear on Sunday and asked if it was "okay to bring the car back after 12pm on sunday", since I would now have to rent another car elsewhere to get home to Vegas that day. She said "yes we have a key drop lockbox outside" and I reiterated that I would be doing this. On Sunday I drove an hour the opposite direction of home to rent a one way vehicle from Riverside to get back to Vegas then dropped off the Barstow rental around 2pm and dropped the keys. There were now over 20 vehicles at this Avis location. On Monday my receipt arrived with an extra day of rental charge, an extra day of the Avis sneaky rental recoup fee (them charging you to register the car each year) and a late fee of $15. I called back to the office and again reached Bertha at the desk. I asked why I was charged and she said that since there was no one to check in the vehicle when I dropped it off that it was checked in Monday and charged an extra day. When I recalled our conversation Friday she did not argue what was said (or omitted) but instead told me I would have to call the 1-800 number and she couldn't do anything. I asked if the franchise owner or manager was available and she said she did not know when they would be back in and that she had no way to reach them. She told me only that their name was Michelle (no last name). I called and spoke with the first live person at Avis customer service and she reversed the charges and assigned my case to what she called the specialty department for processing and gave me a case number...all within 5 minutes. I get a franchise owner/manager (wanting to hoard their fleet of cars in a remote location like Barstow) instructing their employees to contact third-party booking guests and say they have no one-way rentals. It's their "inventory" and they can get away with making guests then go back to Expedia or Booking.com to deal with cancelling and rebooking elsewhere. However, it infuriates me that a manager or owner like Michelle would teach their front line employee to do this to direct book Avis corporate rate guests and further instruct the employee not to contact them, share any way to reach them or a time they'd be returning to field customer service issues, like when their employee omits that there will be a late charge for dropping the keys in the lock box. This is greedy and misleading business practice combined with zero compassion (or effort) for customer service and Michelle should be reprimanded by Avis for operating her branch as such. read more

This is the worst rental car place I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. They treat you like you are so lucky to be in their presence. Michelle, the manager or worker, shouldn't ever work in customer service, or really any job, as I have never seem such horrible job skills, business knowledge, brain power, or customer service. She either lied or was ignorant with the information she gave me. I called constantly for two entire days, and she didn't have a moment to answer the phone. I was over-charged, and Avis would do nothing to fix it. I went on Michelle's instructions, and when I needed to adjust my rental, she was obviously unavailable because she was too busy to answer the phone. Probably late in, an early early lunch, maybe some social media, and an early out. That's all I can guess because no one could possibly provide this horrible level of service if they were a regular, mentally-functioning human being. The only reason you should ever rent a car from Avis in Barstow CA is if you are stranded, out of food and water, being circled by buzzards, and only having moments to live. Even then, you might want to take your chances and still avoid Avis. The National Avis Corporation should be ashamed of themselves for allowing such an inept office represent them. Shame on them. I hope people take that into consideration before they even rent a car from any Avis office, because they obviously don't care about customer service. A few tips for Michelle and staff in Barstow: 1. The wort rental car company I've ever dealt with. Reserved a rental for a one way just to find out later they were not allowing one way rentals. Reserved a compact car and was given a Jeep with only a 11 gallon gas tank. I called to extend my rental for a day and the customer service lady ended up charging me DOUBLE what she should have and when I asked her about it on the phone while I'm looking at my bank app, she lied and said they didn't. Returned the rental and they took the money from my account without refunding my money they should have never took and was told to wait 10 business days. I paid $250 just to be told when I showed up to pick up my rental that they gave it away and didn't bother to call or even email me. While at Avis/Budjet I myself and my disabled older friend were there. He went in side alone do to the Covid 20 guidlines currently in affect. WITHIN maybe less than 4 mins later he calls me inside were, I am informed that the car he books 'The day before over the phone with a live gentleman "is not on the lot. He than precedes to tell me that they will refund his money to his credit card. I than ask my friend are they putting us in a different car. The woman at the desk said she can't put you in different car. Which is Crazy to me. Upon further investigation my friend tells me before he could even ask the woman said "She not doing any free up grades" WAIT HOLD UP RUDE MUCH IN YOUR REPRESENTING A BUSINESS AT THAT" My problem with this situation is that the person over the phone "Who I am sure the company is aware of representing them" booked the car over the phone is a extension of your company !!! Anyways long story short when i returned the car we got charged more money that i expected because i didn't get insurance on the car.A month later they sent me a bill of $700 because they towed the car with the flat tire i think that's ridiculous. If I could give zero stars I would. I reserved a vehicle with Avis for our military move from CA to TX. I prepaid to make sure that our vehicle would be available when we needed it. I reserved the vehicle on 1/12 for the dates 2/17 through 2/23. Someone from the Avis in Barstow called me a day before I was to pickup the vehicle to tell me that corporate came and took all the cars from their lot and they are canceling my reservation. She said they had zero cars (I reserved an SUV). They said that they would be refunding me but it would take 3 to 5 days to get the money back. I asked how they could call someone and cancel the day before and then can't give them the money back right away. Shes said I would have to call corporate. So, I called corporate to which they said there was nothing that could be done and I would just have to wait for my money. I explained that I already spent $800 to reserve this vehicle from their company and needed that money to now figure something else out a day before my family had to leave. The person said there was nothing they could do. I asked how a company could operate like this and he said he would transfer me to a manager and then hung up on me. I called back and spoke with someone else. They said that my reservation still showed active and that they have no record of any of this. I asked for him to confirm with the Barstow location on having no cars available and he said he couldn't do that. It's beyond me that a company is run this way. The guy said he would cancel my reservation and start the refund process (meaning no one has even done that yet) and I wouldn't see my money for up to five days. Seriously go to enterprise- this location put us through an ordeal, bait and switch, wouldn't tell us the rate over the phone and wouldn't let us make a reservation until we came in. When we went in the only worker there was engaged in a lengthy conversation with a customer unrelated to business for 15 min. Finally he told us he had a vehicle but wouldn't take a coupon we had for that specific location even though there were no conditions which prohibited the use. I recently rented a car from y'all spur of the moment when one of your competitors fell through. I called and spoke to Jessica who said if I could come immediately, she had a Ford Explorer we could have. She quoted me a comparable price and I quickly agreed, crossed the street and went in to sign the paperwork. There were others inside waiting but, Jess was Johnny on the spot and had the paperwork ready to sign on the counter. I always DECLINE the additional insurance because we carry full coverage through USAA- why pay for the same coverage twice? Ms. Jessica pointed to each place to initial as she verbally summarized each topic, I signed where she indicated and we went out to inspect the vehicle. The truck had not been washed or vacuumed but we were grateful to get it and get it quickly as we had already been delayed. I should also mention that while inspecting the vehicle, Jessica neglected to catch two dings in the windshield. One was more significant than the other. Other than that, things were fine until we went to turn it in at the Las Vegas airport on the 28th- We'd filled it up, and everything checked out until we got to where we pay... Ms. Jessica had incorrectly entered the date of our return and we were informed we were a day late! Nope, no way. I knew when we were flying home and it wasn't the day before. We were charged an additional $136.63 in late fees, penalties and $17 a day for the insurance I declined in the first place. Instead of the quoted and original invoice of $176.00 (+ tax = $196.00) our total was $332.63!!! We attempted to correct the issue right then and there but they were unable to assist since it was a different state, city, etc... I attempted to call your offices many times over the course of our travel day with no success. The calls went directly to an international call center and this was at 3 in the afternoon. I finally reached Ms. Jessica on Friday, March 1st and kindly explained the discrepancy. She became rude, defensive and evasive when I asked for the owners name & info. Aside from the inconvenience AND the added expenses charged, dealing with your manager (Jessica) was the icing on the cake! That girl isn't doing you any favors. She should be fired and replaced immediately if you value your business integrity! I have filed a complaint for resolution with the San Bernadino County Better Business Bureau and contested the charges on my credit card. I don't take lightly to being taken advantage of and manipulated this way. I may just file a small claims suit there in Barstow since I read all of the other complaints here and all over the internet that suspiciously resemble mine. Our rented Cruise America RV broke down in the middle of nowhere ( i.e., between Baker and Barstow on the 15 south) as we were heading home to Los Angeles. We made a reservation for a van through the 800 number for the Avis rental car company in Barstow and when we got there we were told that they had too many reservations and didn't have a car for us. Apparently, the facility tried to call us, but we didn't get the message. They told us not only do they not have a van, they had no vehicles available at all. We had to flag someone down to drive us (no Uber or Lyft available). Obviously, the call center and the individual locations are not in sync. Beware or you could get stranded like we did. read more
