I live right around the corner from this coffee shop and frequent it fairly often. I stop by whenever I'm in the mood for espresso or too lazy to brew for myself at home, which happens a lot. While I am grateful to have access to a specialty coffee shop in my neighborhood, I just wish they were a little better..
I was excited to hear that they were switching to roasting their own coffee a while ago, despite my deep love for Verve (the roaster they previously used, after things went south with Flying Goat Coffee) but I just haven't been quite as impressed since they made the change. I believe they're using quality green coffee, it just seems they need a little help dialing in their roast profiles. Most everything I have tried tastes a little underdeveloped with straw -like notes and a slightly unpleasant acidity and bitterness. Granted some of this may be due to the fact that the baristas aren't properly trained or simply don't take their work seriously enough, but either way, the end result isn't great.
The customer service here leaves a lot to be desired. The baristas seem so preoccupied with how cool they think they are for working in an independently owned cafe and so busy messing with the shop music and interacting with each other that they're not quite on top of their game when it comes to facilitating orders in an efficient and professional manner. Quite often the place will be hopping, with a line of anxious customers eagerly awaiting their beverage, and the employees simply walk away to do nonessential tasks - like change the music. Having the one barista disappear into the back room for a period of time or casually carry on conversations with fellow employees while moving at a snail's pace on bar when there is a line of drinks to be made is just mind blowing to me, and is the reason I can't always stop in before work. There's also never a reason to be unfriendly with customers that are choosing to patronize your business over others in the area.
I know this may seem like the opinion of one uptight , high maintenance customer who just doesn't get what goes into running a cafe and serving customers, but really I do. I've worked in coffee for the past 10 years as a barista, trainer, cafe manager and quality control specialist. I hate it when people say this in their yelp posts, but... I do kind of know what I'm talking about... I just wish these guys worked with a little more of a sense of urgency, especially when it's busy. They don't really seem to care about how long it takes to make your coffee and get you on your way. And the attitude is a huge turn off and something that I hate having associated with specialty coffee, even though it's often all too present in a great number of cafes. It most certainly is at Acre.
I will definitely keep patronizing this place, and I really am grateful to have them in the neighborhood, however I eagerly await the day that we get another specialty coffee shop here in downtown Petaluma. read more
