Run!!! The Aesthetics School is so disorganized it's pathetic. They gave us 150 pages of poor quality black/white copied paper for School Manual...so cheap! Dime store makeup /sample size cheap face products. The School Director, Autumn does NOT care about Students only money. I enrolled almost (1) month prior to School , on Day (1) of School there were (30) Students , the night Instructor was NOT organized or knowledgeable. She looked like she just rolled out of bed. Also, I was told I would NOT get my scrubs for weeks because "they were switching vendors" Director told me I could just wear black while others Students have their scrubs..that's a "NO" No access to sterilization for a large group. Studies we're NOT downloaded to apps correctly. Cheap products I dropped the class after the 2nd day..pure chaos! The Director Autumn , threatened me that I would owe thousands if I dropped my class after just 14 hours...Read the other bad reviews on the Aesthetics Program. I feel sorry for the students learning to do pedicures at Avalon Institute in Mesa Arizona. For safety reasons, they can only file your toenails. So, if your toenails need to be cut or have dead skin removed you're out of luck. And, there is no disclosure of these limitations on the website. Had there been I would have cut my toenails beforehand. Additionally, the school does not have traditional pedicure chairs - just 3 office chairs (which roll out from under you) and portable rolling foot baths (with wheels that don't lock). My student was constantly fighting to keep the footbath stable and did the best she could under the circumstances, but it was a challenge for both of us. I would imagine that the students are paying a hefty amount for their education and proper equipment and tools should be available to them. read more

They destroyed my hair, it was totally burnt. I sat in the chair for 5 hours she used the smallest rollers and the instructor approved of it all. I complained to the manager the next day she said she was sorry and gave me a jar of something with a #10 it. It's been almost 3 months and I've gotten as many hair cuts as I can and it's still a mess. I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE. read more

If you want to become a stylist, or you have a kid that wants to become a stylist DO NOT GO HERE! I can't say anything about the esti program but i hear good things about the esti program and the teachers but i do know the cosmo program. First thing, when you go to tour the school they tell you what you want to hear, they tell have a whole list of things they teach but they don't even teach you half the things they tell you, they also tell you what comes in your cases but you don't get half the stuff they say you do. Second, 95% of the cosmo teachers are rude and barely know what they are doing, and they don't care about teaching you. Third, if you care about your mental health stay far away from here. No one at this school cares about your mental health, and when i say no one i mean absolutely no one including the teachers, the administrators, the receptionists absolutely NO ONE! The only thing anyone at this school cares about is MONEY! The cosmo program has Stage 1 and Stage 2 they call it. Stage 1 is 10 weeks I believe I don't remember for sure, you are in the classroom 3 days a week, you have 1 day online and 1 day your "on the floor" and you have to have a "model" come in. When your in the class room they teach you the basics of everything in Stage 1, but it's fast and i mean extremely fast each week you learn 2-3 different things in the class and you spend 1 day learning and practicing what you learned, then they expect you to do it on a "model" when you barely know how to do it. Then after those 10 weeks you move to stage 2, in Stage 2 your "on the floor" 3 days a week, in the classroom 1 day and 1 day online. Stage 2 is basically the same thing every week. When I first started I loved Stage 1 and my teacher but once i got to stage 2 I hated it and the teachers, my mental health got extremely bad and i ended up dropping out. I had already paid my tuition in full and they still tried to say I owe them money. There is many more reasons but that's just a few. read more

Gosh I'm in my 50's and just now starting to take care of my skin much better. I've been to Avalon twice first for eyebrow and face waxing, then went back for a facial. The services are unbelievable the exfoliators they use and the hydrating products they use are so soothing and relaxing and they smelled very natural and beautiful. I have also been there for a haircut, ( $10 ) totally unheard of.! I now have 2 future appointments with a student her name is Shelby Fishell, I highly recommend her and this school for their services. read more

Went in for appointment for simple shampoo and conditioner.signed in and sat down to wait for my person to come get me. After 25 minutes I went to desk to see what was happening. Multiple people came in while I was waiting, and they were seen right away. When I spoke to the girl behind the desk she said that I was there for a haircut. I told her that I just wanted a shampoo and conditioner. Several other people that had come in after me were called back to get their services provided. Finally the girl told me to go sit down and someone would be with me. Waited for a few minutes more watching people go back for their services. I finally got up and left. It was like I never existed. Lindsey the president of Avalon in Layton is so inexperienced. My doctor actually had to step in to tell her you're breaking the law. She has no concern for students with mental health issues. Depression, anxiety, ADHD etc. She's there to pull in the cash and devil may care about the details. I personally saw her let a student verbally attack a wonderful instructor. I almost stepped in till I saw her behind me just allowing it. I have ZERO respect for her. This school is a joke. I learned more from classes I took on the side. The government needs to jump in and regulate these beauty schools. They are stealing from hardworking people. I barley learned a thing from that school. This school is great! I made an appointment for hair and makeup for my ASU graduation! The day of I called in to confirm location (as I am from out of town) and found out my makeup appointment wasn't scheduled. Amazingly they were able to schedule it in! Both girls that I worked with were SO lovely and so great! I was worried about my curls falling out and they made sure to put just enough hairspray and the hair stayed all night! I couldn't even get the Bobby pin out because it was just tucked in perfectly! The makeup application was great! The teacher mixed a custom mix of foundation and the girls were super resourceful. My only complaint is really with the way the school set the girls up makeup wise. If you offer a service then you should have everything needed for that service. The girls had to hunt down supplies, face lotion, etc. Because nobody there knew where anything was and for whatever reason they don't use makeup brushes... anyways, I highly recommend this place! read more

Avalon School of Cosmetology is a dictatorship and a complete scam! When enrolling false promises were made and I was basically told anything I wanted to hear to get me to sign up! A student was even told they would be getting "extensive make up education" because she was more interested in that than hair and wasn't going to enroll. We only do a week of the makeup unit throughout the entire program. When going online it said they had extended education for hair extensions and that is what really peaked my interest, but when asking the day of orientation the staff let us know that hair extensions aren't something we do at the school... even tho your website says you do????? The students even had a running joke that the administration staff who do the tours float down the hallways on their magic carpets promising the world but giving us nothing. The equipment that is displayed in a glass case that is shown during the tour is full of things we do not get because that's all the good stuff lol. Everything that was in my kit, including the actual case, had to be replaced at 500 hours.. and I paid over $1,000 for it. For the 5 months I was enrolled in that school it was nothing but trouble from the facility down to the products which were expired! The makeup would have to be in the worst condition and totally unusable! but when bringing it up to the staff we were told to use it or have THE CLIENTS bring in their own stuff if they wanted their make up done. What the hell they might as well do it at home themselves! I could never get just one answer on how to properly do something I mean I had gone thru 5 different instructors just in my last two months of being there. When I had things stolen from me inside one of the classrooms no action was taken and it was basically like my instructor, at the time, was a deer in headlights when I asked to check the cameras. This same teacher, who "specializes" in hair cutting, messed up another instructor and a students hair cuts so bad they both CRIED.. the student even had to purchase a wig. The teaching staff also pick and choose favorites and god for bid if you weren't a favorite or did one thing they didn't like, now you're being bullied like what mean girls do to each other in junior high. As if you aren't paying a shit load of money to be there... which also doesn't stop them from dress coding you and SENDING YOU HOME (attendance is so fucking important right) if they don't like a piece of your clothing, even tho said piece of clothing was stated "allowed" in the student handbook. They make up rules as they go to make sure they stay in control and it is so hard to keep up with. I was never given the encouragement I needed to succeed, instead I was belittled and had to hear about how I, as a student, needed to "get it together more" and to "do my part" but one of the staff members thinks its okay to complain about her feet being sore from running around on the floor all day..... like she isn't being paid to do so or anything! I wouldn't wish their childish behavior on anyone. In the beginning of the program I was hopeful and excited to start my beauty journey but they sucked that happiness right out of me, on a daily basis. My attendance was perfect and my grades were awesome but I only give what I get and unfortunately I couldn't be apart of the lies anymore. read more

Okay, so the girls are all very nice and they do their best to provide great customer service, but my hair was ruined. I went in to get my hair colored and I wanted chocolate brown hair, but that was never achieved. When I left there, my hair was orange and they ran out of time so I had to go to Great Clips to get a haircut. I was able to return free of charge to have it fixed, unfortunately, they got rid of the orange, but my hair was back to dark brown with a few blonde streaks. It was nothing like what I wanted, but at least it wasn't orange anymore. I have since just colored my hair myself at home. The one concerning issue that I have is how the weekend instructor treats these students. It's an Asian lady, I don't know her name, but she literally made a student cry. She was rude, hard and literally degraded these poor girls. I can understand why the students aren't learning. They're embarrassed, afraid to approach the instructor and I was appalled by this lady's demeanor. These students pay too much to attend school there and should be treated with dignity and respect. read more

Read this before attending school here The real question is where do I start with this school... the Estie program is an after thought for sure. They care way more about the cosmetic program than ours considering we are only in school for a short amount of time. They answer all the questions for cosmetic questions with a breeze but it take a week to hear back about anything esthetician wise...... first when signing up the administration feeds you lies about what the esthetician program covers. They said we would be learning lash extensions. Lie. They said micro needling. Lie. Micro blading. Lie. Etc. they say the classes are so small about 6 people.... lie again ours was 16-18. we also learn "high fashion makeup" aka they show you old as Fuck videos from the early 2000's and YouTube videos you can watch yourself. Your money for the school also gets you a kit and in the kit I didn't even use half the stuff in it... waste of money for sure. I get that covid is hard but the zoom classes are a joke. The instructors never mark where they left off let alone they switch all the time so there is confusion on how much we learned the day before. Seeming like there is no communication between the instructors..... they also offset chapters we learn so that when new students come in we can all learn at once over zoom even if we are ahead in our education. Sounds like a great idea considering covid we can't all be in a class but it missed the mark. My last month of school I was learning how to study and pay attention in school when that should definitely be in the beginning of our chapter. I also learn about products and product knowledge at the end of our course and considering we work with clients and are supposed to educate clients on products that should be covered in the beginning as well. My class was definitely blessed because we had a very knowledgeable instructor Mrs. Alisha and usually students don't have the same instructor for the whole unit but lord am I glad we did. The other instructors have no clue what they are talking about especially Mrs. Lorie. She was our fill in instructor and she cared way more about the rules of the school like being on your phone and such then actually teaching her students anything. If anything we had to teach her student how to do anything. They didn't even know how to wax.....not their fault at all. You never know what your gonna get from her because her teaching is all up to her mood on that day. (That being said it's always stressed for some reason) the school has a strict no phone policy that being said she will send you home if your on your phone. No warning at all. Let alone she's on her phone allllllll day playing games. Also imagine being a 32 year old adult and telling your husband you got sent home for texting your kids back during school. What are we? 5? Seems like it. Most of the other instructors are Catty and would rather push us aside then answer our questions. Also let's get into the rules while we are on that subject. Client have 30 minutes to show up for there appointment or else it's canceled. As a student you have to complete daily activities for the month to receive you grade for participation also you wanna get your money's worth with practicing as much as you can. That being said many time have students in my class and myself have set up for a client at 10am and the client is 2 hours late but we still have to take them or we will be sent home..... so that being said our whole day is wasted waiting to take this client because the school cares more about money than our education as you Can tell. In a real spa they would have to reschedule because that a waste of our time but we pay the school to be employees so we don't get a choice. All I'm saying is we all have to start somewhere but really look into this school before your start here. read more

I had gotten a recommendation to go here for a scalp treatment so I made an appt for a Saturday. When I made the appt the person on he phone said nothing about how long the appt would take so I assumed it would be 30 minutes. My husband and kiddos dropped me off for my appt 5 minutes early and I checked in. 10 minutes past my appt time I was still waiting. A girl finally came up to me and asked if I was me, and she took me over to her station. She seemed very unsure of herself, an "instructor" came over and they went over "procedure" and she walked away. The girl got started, I tried asking her how long it might be so that I could let my husband know. She said maybe about 30 minutes. I sent him and text. She meant 30 minutes just for that one section of what she needed to do. During this time the girl kept fishing for information from me, she couldn't understand that maybe I just didn't want to talk and telling her things like what my favorite food was or favorite type of music was not something I wanted to tell her. After she was done putting the scalp treatment on my head and brushing it she took me over to the sink to wash my hair. She then did some other type of shampoo that required for me to sit under the dryer for 20 minutes. I asked for her to lower the time and she would only take 5 minutes off. After 10 minutes I was so annoyed and I asked to be done. She took me out and washed my hair out again and took me back to her station where she attempted to roll brush dry my hair when it was completely wet! I have extremely thick hair (which is why it probably took so long for her to brush it out for the first part) that she asked for help drying my hair. The girl she asked had no idea how to dry hair with a roll brush!!! During the time she was drying my hair someone called her to come to the register for something, she called her twice even though she could see she was busy!! It took them both 40 minutes to dry my hair! When they were "done" I had to use the bathroom so bad I walked away and the girl went to the cash register. I made my way up to the register and the same woman who called the girl up to the register checked me out. She had the rudest look on her face that I just paid and left. It makes me sad I had such a bad experience bc I think the scalp treatment actually helped my hair! But I will NEVER go back! read more

I have getting my hair done for about a year now. Until my last visit it has been amazing! My only gripe is that the instructors don't assist the students. They don't check the cut lines, they don't give feedback to students. Students feel that they don't need to be checked. I advised one student, you should have every color, cut, or style checked for feedback, this is the only place you will get it. I went in the other night, I had a new person to do a color, a glaze, and a baby trim. I got there st 545 pm, the student was still putting color on at 9:30 pm. Why did an instructor NOT come up to assist with the issue? Why was no one helping? It is supposed to be under guidance. They asked me to come back the next day to finish the 2 other services. I love going to Avalon, my only feedback is that teachers could really supervise students to keep them on task, and to help out when a student is struggling through something. read more

First time here and I already planned my second trip. I used to go to Great Clips until they messed up my hair two different times, and I'm never going back. I took my chance with a salon where the artists are still learning after recommendations from my friends. I loved the process, from making an appointment to getting my hair done. They told me who would be doing my hair when I made my appointment that day. When I got there, Diana (my student hair dresser), was waiting for me. She took me to her station and talked about what would be good to change up my hair. The instructor was always there to double check before any changes or cuts were made; giving me peace of mind. Really awesome place!! For $10 I got a haircut with shampoo/condition/styling. Mani-pedis are $20. Won't break the bank:) read more

My sister went to a different beauty school but since she was busy on my days off I decided to take a chance and visit a different school since she always did such a good job and the school atmosphere was relaxed and felt safe. Not here! At Avalon the girl doing my mani/pedi told me she had never done either before. She literally read from a set of directions on how to do my nails. I could have done a better job painting my nails than that. Same thing for the pedicure. Instead of the instructor coming over to inspect, critique and offer advice to the student like they do at my sister's school (Marinello) the student just had the teacher sign off on it and I never saw the teacher and she never saw my awful nail job. I originally wanted to get my eybrows waxed as well but since the student working on me had no idea how to do that either I made an excuse and left before she had a chance to mess up my face or skin. There were more students goofing off and working on each other than there were instructors or clients in the salon. It was noisy and did not look as clean as it should be. For my manicure/pedicure instead of a nice salon chair I sat in a rolly chair and had my feet soaking in a plastic bucket. The nail polishes were messy, old and dried out. The waxing area did not look like it had been wiped down or cleaned in quite a while. Not worth the cheap price for students to work on you here unless perhaps you know them directly and trust them. My experience here was completely awful! I was assigned to Megan. First off, I was waiting in her chair for almost 30 minutes before she can decide what to. All I wanted was a full cover of burgundy. She barely spoke and did not even focus on my needs. Second, the water was cold when she was shampooing my hair. Third, she was always spacing out and was talking trash about her superiors to her other coworker. Fourth, my hair was different shades of color all out. Some light, some dark, overall AWFUL! In the end, she had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to keep my hair wet or blow-dry?! Like are you serious? Yes, I want it blow dried so I can see better results!!!! I still had marks of the color all over my ear and the side of foreheads! I HAD TO ASK HER IF SHE COULD CLEAN IT UP! Completely, AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL! Never coming back ever! read more

Unfortunately I had an awful experience with this school. The instructors are very rude and immature. They have no control over the over crowded classrooms. My instructor, MaryAnne, was awful. She would tell us at least once a day that it is not her job to teach us to cut hair, its her job to teach us to pass the state board test. For $20,000. It's just insulting. She was rude, inappropriate, unhelpful, and obviously miserable at her job. I was promised one on one attention and a positive learning environment and I ended up transferring to another school because Avalon was so awful. Please don't waste your time or money at Avalon you will be disappointed. Seriously look at other places before deciding spending $20K for a half fast education.The instructors are not intellectual and do not give a crap about explaining/helping you. The fact that they do not take care of their students that put in 20K for this education is BS. This is a bad area and a bad school to attend. There is no good reason to come or even stay at this school. As someone who has to come here 5 days a week, they need to start restocking their bathrooms, make sure all cameras are working every day so that crimes do not continue to occur in this plaza area, and quit picking favorites and only giving customers to people that are friends to the front desk ladies. If you value your hair stay away. My daughter went fora hair cut and dye and the student was ignorant and didnt want to listen and do what was asked. She had other students do things that she did not want to do and got the color wrong, she didnt rinse the dye out because 3 days later and we are still washing out dye. She didnt even dye all the hair and the instructors did not offer any help and no supervision, She even had to listen about how the student abused her child and them taken away. First time I went in I was apprehensive, but you need to realize that it's a school. Those that are performing services are students. They will make mistakes but they have an instructor right there to help them learn and make sure you are happy with the end result. The girl that I had was awesome the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because I was there for four hours, which I also expected but was hoping it wouldn't be that long. Every person there is learning something and ask your stylist what they need to help them graduate, you will be happy you did because sometimes they give discounts out if the client add-on a service. I added waxing to mine. I have to say she did an awesome job on everything. And with my husband and I we were excited to see our bill was what it would cost for a haircut at a regular salon. Lori Smith cut my hair into long layers and colored it with a beautiful caramel ombre Friday 1/4/14. She did an amazing job and I feel very confident with the training of the students at this school. I must add the teacher was very good about checking in throughout the process to make sure proper technique was used to create the style I desired.
