We had a nice Saturday afternoon lunch on the patio. Very welcoming staff, especially nice for our first time. I had the Cobb salad with the Brie soup. Nice sized portions. The only thing I would have enjoyed more was bigger bites of chicken. My husband enjoyed the Weston Chicken salad. Again nice portions and nothing too extravagant. Only minus to the salad was lack of the chicken salad mixture. read more

Ate the grilled pork tenderloin sandwich, the cup of gumbo. Starting with the sandwich, generally lacking flavor except for the overpowering smoke flavor. My assumption is liquid smoke was used while applying grill marks. The less likely answer is they over smoked the meat. The gumbo was more akin to seafood soup. The consistency and clarity of the broth/ liquid was off. I didn't detect a roux at all and assume they aren't basing there gumbo on the roux. Overall the meal wasn't great. The chicken pesto linguini:chicken was cooked perfect, but there was very little basil or pesto visible or in the flavor profile. read more

My burger was cooked well, but the seasoning, spices and flavor were lacking. The waitress was ok, but didn't seem to have a clue as to what their best sellers are and that is strange to me. The old house is pretty cool and in a nice area on Main Street. read more

Avalon Cafe - Elk loin and KC strip with the best mashed potatoes evaaaaaa - New American Near Me - Weston, Missouri

Go here! It is very much worth the drive. This restaurant is magnificent. Located in a charming historic old house in the very scenic downtown Weston MO, Avalon is a wonderful mix of elegant and casual. The food is absolutely excellent and very reasonably priced. They are all out accommodating...we arrived hungry for BLTs (tomato season is nigh), but alas, not on the menu. We asked and they happily went off menu prepared one of the best BLTs I have ever had (and I have consumed many). Service is friendly and attentive but not intrusive. read more

I'm torn. Some friends and I went for (holy hangover) breakfast and mine was really delish on the really lovely patio. Getting water (did I mention the hangover?) and refills was frustratingly difficult! A weird scene where my friend ordered a specialty (dessert/liquored up) coffee named Avalon off the menu but got a regular cup o joe (waitress said ALL their coffee was Avalon coffee!). We did finally get it straight. On top of that one of the gals asked if she could get her dish without peppers. Server said yes but apparently... no. There were peppers galore! (but no onion). read more

Five star review WITH A DISCLAIMER! It all depends on who is cooking. We have been to this restaurant 3 times. First time: Probably rated in the top five meals of all time. It was AMAZING. We ordered the linguine and the pork tenderloin which was pepper crusted, and it came with a side of mashed potatoes and vegetables. The mashed potatoes were to die for, the vegetables were well flavored, and the pork was cooked to perfection. In addition, the service was pleasant, the atmosphere romantic, and the bill came out to $50! We thought we'd found a gold mine... Five star experience. Second time: Maybe our expectations were too high but this time we came on a Saturday night. We drove 30 minutes out of our way just because our first experience there was so amazing. However, our evening at the Avalon was so terrible that we almost didn't come back. First, the service was terrible. We had no idea who our server was because so many random people were attending to us. Despite that, it was hard to get ANYONE to pay attention to us. It took an hour and a half from the time we ordered to get our food. In the loooooong wait, no one offered us bread or refills on our drinks, no one apologized, no one even checked on us. When the food finally arrived, it was terrible terrible terrible. We ordered the pork tenderloin (because of how good it was the first time) and the Weston Trio, which came with beef, chicken, and salmon. The beef was tough and the sauce was over seasoned. The chicken was soooooo overcooked. It was disgusting. The salmon had a strange flavor. The pork tenderloin was equally disappointing. There was such a stark difference between our two experiences was almost enough to make us NEVER come back but we decided to give it one more chance. 1 star experience, and that's only because the salad was good. Third time: We went on a weekday evening and we were the only patrons. Our server was polite and not at all overbearing or underbearing! We ordered the pork tenderloin and the ostrich. While it did not quite compare with the first time, it was delish! The ostrich was sooo tender and the pork tenderloin, while made in a different sauce than the first time, was still good. Four star experience We learned that there are several different cooks. When the owner is cooking (some weekends) you're guaranteed a good meal. Also the same with Jonathan who cooks weeknights. Our second meal was cooked by the third chef who, clearly....not the same as the other two. So depending on who's cooking your meal will depend on the rating. read more

Had the grilled salmon with almonds for lunch. It came with roasted golden potatoes, broccoli and julenne carrots in a cinnamon brown sugar glaze. Absolutely delicious. Well worth the drive to Weston. read more

Had a Surprise 65th Birthday Girls Weekend in Weston and for most, was the first time here. Our first night we had reservations here and we literally walked in and were seated immediately with no wait. Lisa (I assume the owner) had been emailing with me prior to our arrival as I had some questions for her and she was most helpful. She had even placed birthday confetti down the center of the table for us. The food was terrific. We had a variety of dishes from the Baked Brie to the Cajun Shrimp and Andouille Flatbread Pizza, to the Beef and Penne Pasta and all were delicious. Homemade warm bread with butter was provided and desserts....WOW!! The Cinnamon Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce was melt in your mouth scrumptious and the Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake was just as good. Our waitress was pleasant and very attentive as well. Thank you so much Avalon Cafe!!! read more

Executive Summary: On our visit I think the Avalon Cafe lived up to pretty much everything it is trying to be. It is a nice setting, great food, and reasonable prices for what it is. It was the perfect place for my wife and I celebrate our anniversary. Service: At a nice restaurant the expected standard for service is pretty high, and they easily met those expectations. Our server was attentive enough that we did not feel neglected, but at the same time was not coming around every 5 minutes and interrupting our conversation. She seemed to be able to tell from across the room when we needed her to come by and when we didn't. Perhaps the only potential problem was that they did not have the wine we ordered in stock. Still, they offered a similar wine as a substitute, allowing us to try it before accepting it. (In the end I was quite happy with the suggested substitute...I had never tried a Barbera d' Asti before, but it is now on my list of wines to explore further.) Atmosphere: Avalon Cafe is in a converted old house which was built in 1848, so it is laid out as a few small dining rooms. The room we dined in I think had five tables. If there had been a bigger crowd it might have been a bit uncomfortable in the room, but there was still more room between the tables than other similar restaurants I have seen. Food: The menu was not really what I was expecting before coming here. Sure, they had many of the expected items such as a veal cutlet with mushrooms and Marsala, a Kansas City strip streak, etc...but the menu also had elk, wild boar and ostrich entrees. The wild boar loin was great. The whole grain mustard and roasted garlic complemented the meat, but did not overpower it. The flavor was still really the wild boar itself, which almost tasted a bit more like beef than pork. This was served with mashed potatoes and 4 small servings of vegetables (broccoli, some sort of beans, squash and sweet red cabbage). What I really liked was the brushetta appetizer. Thinking back on the eggplant, warm goat cheese and basil together I almost shiver with delight. Not sure if they are always like this, but these were perfect. I could have had a whole meal of nothing but this and the wine and been very, very satisfied. The flan for desert was okay, but not the best I have ever had. On another visit I would probably try something else...or maybe not...I really like flan. read more

This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in my life. And not just because of the food but because of the service and ambiance. We made reservations at 7 o'clock and where there sharp. We were seated right away and they brought menus. Everything on the menu looked delicious and the specials for the night sounded amazing as well. John had the wild boar loin and I have the gumbo. Both were very delicious and incredibly brought to us in about 15 minutes. Portions were great! We also had some nice fresh bread while we waited. We did not have dessert or appetizers there but I am sure those would have been delicious as well. Staff was very friendly and made sure we were well taken care of through our stay. I would definitely recommend this place while in Weston read more

I've had many a lunch with my family at the Avalon Cafe. Modern rustic setting, with consistently good food. Soups have been amazing here. The burger is nice, too. The dining rooms are in various rooms of the old house, and add to its charm. read more

My wife and I had recently seen the movie "The Chef". Although a completely different set of circumstances than the movie, I couldn't help but think of it all through our meal. The entry I ordered was pretty standard for me, a cut of steak. Now what reminded me of the movie is what accompanied the steak. What a completely out of the box for me sides of two grilled halves of a potato, string yellow squash, and pickled red cabbage was fabulous. The best part though was the exquisite mushroom sauce that went so complimentary with the beef. Thank you chef for tantalizing my pallet so surprisingly. I'm not close to being a food critic and I can't wait to try it again!! read more

My wife and I went here on our anniversary. Not impressed. First off, there were two other couples in the entire restaurant and the hostess sat us right next too one of the other couples. We asked to move and the hostess obliged. My wife had a seafood fettuccine pasta dish. Very bland. It tasted as though it didn't have any seasoning. I got the Cajun pizza. Same thing. Very bland. The pasta sauce on the pizza tasted like it came out of a can. We will be trying a different restaurant next time we go to Weston. read more

Great pasta dishes. Competes with the best in KC . Unbelievable desserts. Going to go every Friday. Too good to miss.

One of my best friends had a wonderful bridal luncheon here for a group of bridesmaids and family. To start, the staff set up a mimosa and appetizer bar out on the patio, which overlooks quaint, downtown Weston. Our whole group enjoyed spending time together on a beautiful day. We were all then treated to a delicious spread of cheeses, breads and vegetables, followed by an excellent chicken salad and tasty blueberry cheesecake for dessert. It was the perfect setting for a special get together - great ambiance, food and service! I would highly recommend this spot for a day out in Weston or for a gathering with friends. Sorry guys, there were numerous chances at keeping this first timer's hopes up, but the ball just kept being dropped. First, the positives. A really cool ambiance in a beautiful old home. Great selection behind the bar, and the food we had for brunch was quite good. It was the service that pulls down the rating, and left with the sense that we had just been forgotten about throughout the entire meal. We were sat by one of the 2 servers in a corner table when the restaurant was maybe 30% full. After seeing the staff attend to others in the restaurant, 15minutes later, were up trying to flag someone down to even get our drink orders in. Decided to put food orders in since everything seemed to be taking awhile, and once another 15minutes rolled around when our food finally came, I'm back up again approaching someone in the kitchen to wonder where in the world those drinks actually are. To their credit, the drinks were comped which I appreciate. But all in all, it felt like they really didn't care much whether I was a patron that day, or if it was just another empty table in the corner. read more

Really great food, relaxing atmosphere. Is a great gourmet restaurante in/near Weston. I don't know if I would sway you towards any other place In that area. The last time I was there was when I went to the homes tours in the fall. Really set the neat town mood and everything because of the candles that lined the streets that weekend. So far I have not had a bad dish from this cafe. read more

Went with the wife for Valentine's Day. Great experience! From the online reservations (made a week in advance), to the easy trip (between at St. Joe and KC), the excellent food (wife had the lamb, I had the beef tenderloin, and we shared some cinnamon bread pudding), and the reasonable price (below $150 for two entries, wine, and dessert including 20% tip) everything met or exceeded expectations! Will defiantly go again. read more

Interesting menu and a relaxing atmosphere. The food is amazing, one of our must visit places when going to Weston!

Highly recommended for a delightful and light lunch. I haven't tried Avalon for dinner yet but it seems like the perfect, romantic date spot. Atmosphere is lovely. Food is flavorful and thoughtful. My only complaint is that our glasses of wine were on the small side. We will be back! read more

Decided to make the trip up to Weston from KC for dinner with my fiancée. Both waitresses were very nice and welcoming. I loved the atmosphere, it reminded me of the Row House in Topeka. Bread was amazing, food was quick, hot, and delicious. We loved the assortment of veggies and potatoes. Tenderloin was spot on, chicken was cooked perfectly, and the walleye was a welcoming change to the standard whitefish most places serve. We look forward to coming back. 10/10 would dine again! read more

My wife and I stopped in for a late lunch yesterday. I had been here several times but it was the first for my wife. It was a cold, dreary winter day and we were looking for something warm and comfortable. First of all, the Avalon has a beautiful view overlooking downtown Weston and the MO River valley. We both had the artichoke soup which was perfect for the day and really hit the spot! My wife had a burger which she said was cooked exactly the way she ordered and was as good as it gets. It was big enough that she took the other half for lunch today. I had the Heavenly Hero. A hot, flavorful sandwich on a croissant. It doesn't get much more comfortable than that. I was once again, very satisfied and my wife was impressed. The Avalon Café was the perfect choice! read more

If you're eating in Weston and you don't choose the Avalon Cafe, you are really doing yourself a disservice. The rich history of the building was enough to get me in the door. Once seated by the hostess I was immediately greeted by the server and given my drink order. The server checked on me not too frequently that I was "bothered" but I was certainly never ignored. I had the salmon club and it was sublime. Couldn't have imagined having a better experience at this 5 star establishment and will definitely be back in the Avalon soon. read more

We ate at Avalon a few weeks ago following a funeral. What a sleeper! The private rooms allowed us to eat in a family setting and they easily accommodated our group of 10. I especially appreciated the attention given our 4 year old grandson. He is a some what picky eater. I asked the server if she could possibly make up a plate for him with a slice of ham, cheese and some fruit. All at the table were suitably impressed with the "artfully arranged" plate he received with rollups of ham, cheese, strawberries, bananas and grapes. (Looking at it, one adult jokingly mentioned he was thinking of changing his order.) Our grandson was delighted and ate everything on his plate. We also liked the fresh bread and herb butter. All of the food we were served was delicious and we enjoyed an after dinner sit down time on the outside deck with a nice view of the town and shops. Our interest was peaked. Weston, Mo. is not an area we have ever frequented in the past but after this dining experience I can see us making trips there in the future. read more

What a great find in Weston! We came for dinner on a snowy Tuesday and had a truly wonderful meal. We were the only table in the restaurant (owing to the snow), and this may have contributed to the fantastic service we received, but overall we were impressed. The food was fabulous. We actually loved everything that we tried: the house salad, buffalo chicken pizza, stuffed quail, monkfish, and the bread pudding. All were hits at our table. We can't wait to come back. read more

While visiting Weston with my husband we decided to stop by Avalon Cafe for a late afternoon dessert. We chose the bread pudding and the lemon & blueberry swirl cheesecake. The bread pudding was absolutely fabulous and the cheesecake was refreshingly delightful! We were told their cheesecake flavors change with the season, we're hoping to make it back for the pumpkin cheesecake in October! YUM! We loved dessert so much, we decided to head back for dinner that evening. We started our dinner with bruschetta and crab cakes, followed by their fresh garden salad and a cup of the brie soup. We didn't think we would have any taste buds left to enjoy our entrees which were the filet of beef and the ostrich. Both meats were cooked to a perfect medium rare. The sides included garlic mashed potatoes that were creamy and seasoned to perfection. They were accompanied by four other fresh vegetables, each cooked with their own flavoring, which were delicious. The whole entree flowed very nicely together. The portions are big and the presentation is flawless. As if we hadn't eaten enough already, we decided to relish in their dessert options yet again. We had the apple torte accompanied with homemade vanilla ice cream, which was served warm and just melted in your mouth. Overall our experience was great, server was attentive and the atmosphere is unique and cozy. Went to the bar area for an after dinner drink and had the great opportunity to meet the owner and his wife. If you're looking for a great weekend getaway from the city, definitely head to Weston and eat every meal at the Avalon Cafe! You won't regret it! read more
