Had to come here because the pizza place was closed, and this was a disappointment. MO is not good at making seafood, and I should have not bought the seafood pasta. Not only is it not filling and the portion is tiny, it is incredibly bland. They don't season anything. The seafood has zero flavor. The bread had zero flavor. The butter wasn't even salted. The scallops were tough and chewy, and I wanted to throw it up once it hit my mouth, but I pushed through and swallowed. The only thing well cooked was the salmon. Had lunch with my girlfriend this weekend. I had trout and she had a turkey melt sandwich. My trout was very good. The size were appropriate and for a lunch serving. It was very filling. We aren't big drinkers, but they did have several options of alcohol. Soft drinks are a very limited option so we just had water. The food was great. The atmosphere was also great and the prices even with a dessert, we shared a slice of cheesecake, and all the food was very good. Our server was attentive and non-overbearing we seated quickly. Had a wonderful experience, the food quality is outstanding! Got the Trio Mixed Grill of Chicken, Beef Tenderloin and Fish of the Day (seared Ahi Tuna) which was amazing. Also sampled the Avalon Salad and Gumbo, both very good. Enjoyed the patio after dinner which was quite large. Appreciated the wine list was well. It's not inexpensive by any stretch so I spend a chunk of change. Luckily because the food was really good I felt ok about the investment! My only negative was my sense they were under-staffed so the servers/bar didn't seem very friendly, seemed more stressed and rushing around. And I have been completely spoiled; as I lived and ate out all the time in the Bay Area during the culinary boom (before the food network)! FULL REVIEW: Food, service, ambiance, and price. I visited intending to have a relaxing evening overlooking Weston and watching the sun set on their outdoor patio. I was ready to go all out with a full spread for a rare evening of pleasure dining. That meant a perfectly staged meal: wine with an appetizer, followed by salad, then an entree with wine, and in due time completed with a dessert, cocktail, and finally finished with espresso. That was hardly my experience. In my opinion, The Avalaon Cafe does not know what they're doing. Here's why: Their menu boasts several exotic entrees such as boar, ostrich, and lamb (just to name a few), and it brands itself as an upscale fine dining restaurant. It is WHITE TABLECLOTH. I'm no novice. I travel extensively and for this price point ($$) have reasonable expectations for a restaurant of this caliber. I arrived at 7:30 pm on a Wednesday evening. That is the top of the dinner hour for any restaurant -- fine dining or not. I anticipated being there for several hours to enjoy a relaxing meal -- until 10 or 10:30 pm. After being seated and ordering my wine I was quickly served a beautiful appetizer of baked brie with almonds and fresh fruit paired with bread and butter. It was delicious. I was not 3 bites in when my salad and full entree were served together all at once. I was astonished. Did they expect me to inhale my food? Were they trying to shove me out of the restaurant? There were both hot and cold plates here. What did they expect me to do? I had barely a sip of my apple wine, which is a local treat. Finally, I thought, "What the hell is going on here??" I found out they close at 8 pm. Then came the cigarette smoke. Holy Hell! How is anyone supposed to enjoy fine cuisine with cigarette smoke? When I asked they said they allow smoking at the bar and outside. Really? Are you effing kidding me? There could be nothing more assaulting to someone's senses, appetite, dining experience, or their health and well-being than to have someone lighting up a cigarette! Even back in the 80's when restaurants allowed smoking, there were SMOKING SECTIONS. You knew precisely what you were in for, and you ASKED for it. Here, you can order fine food and be choked out and disgusted by someone beside you who decides to light up with a noxious cigarette. I asked them to pull the curtain, and they kindly obliged. I had ordered the Mediterranean Salad with the Weston Trio which came with chicken, salmon, and a filet, which I asked to be cooked medium rare. That means a warm pink center. Nope! It was well done. And all the vegetables, which were a rich ensemble of broccoli, carrot, roasted potatoes, beet, and wild mushrooms, were piled all the way to the edge of the very inappropriate 8 inch plate. FIRST: They need to know how to stage a meal properly. That means waiting between courses; allowing the guest the enjoy and savor their meal. It means asking when the order for the entree should be placed with the kitchen/chef. This meal was so poorly staged that I was embarrassed trying to navigate the food. SECOND: No one should EVER be forced to breathe or smell the assault of cigarette smoke while trying to enjoy fine cuisine. THREE: Plate your dishes appropriately. An 8 inch plate is completely inappropriate for dinner. An 8 inch plate is for lunch. Period. The amount of food for this dish was far too much for this size. There should be at least a 2 inch perimeter so your guests can navigate their food. There should be plenty of room for the food, the cutlery to rest, and for the navigation of cutting without having to worry about it falling into their lap or onto the table. Trying to cut my food was a mess. There was simply nowhere for it to go. Frankly, it was a pain the ass to eat. FOUR: Bland. Bland. Bland. No seasoning of any sort. The veggies were barely warm, and were basically raw or steamed. I appreciated the color and variety. But they were not well-prepared or seasoned. The salmon was overcooked. The chicken was beaten to a pulp and was tough. The steak was well done. There was no salt or pepper on the table. I had to ask for it. There is nothing worse than bland food. The very last thing anyone should have to do is try and season cuisine with mere salt and pepper. The chef should be absolutely ashamed. I cannot imagine worse. FIVE: The mushrooms were part of the vegetable ensemble. Now, I love mushrooms, but I'm highly allergic to some. It has long been a cardinal rule that mushrooms are NEVER served unless they are specifically listed. Vegetable ensembles need to stay in the "safe zone". Mushrooms are one of the highest allergy foods in cuisine. They are never inadvertently thrown in the mix. That could kill someone. And that could be your end also. SIX: The peak dinner hour is 7-8 pm. You want to close at the peak of the dinner hour? Ahem... You are NOT fine dining. My server was kind. All of this in 45 min for $91. Never again. read more

We had a wonderful girl's lunch in Weston. MO at the Avalon Cafe! The day was beautiful so we sat outside on their covered deck which overlooks Main Street. Our waitress came quickly and was both super friendly and efficient. For starters, we shared the complementary bread and ordered the Baked Brie with roasted and fresh fruit; both were very good. Our entrees included Pasta Primavera with Julienne vegetables and chicken, Grilled Trout with herbed butter sauce and mixed vegetables, and their special which was Swordfish. The food presentation was great, and while all three were delicious, I think the Pasta Primavera was best. We also each ordered dessert! One of the most chaotic experiences I've had. Even the waitress told the table next to us that she felt like she was in chaos. Came in on a Sunday for a late brunch, sat outside. It was insanely windy, so after about 10 minutes of trying to contain our menus, we went inside. We were seated in a corner. Thankfully we knew what we wanted to order, because our inside table was not given menus. We originally asked for a French 75, waiter came back and told us they were out. My friend ordered a coffee, was not offered cream or sugar. When we asked for our tab to split into two, our waiter agreed, but completely forgot, and was reminded after she saw me on my way to the bathroom. I ordered the large pesto chicken salad with a side of breakfast potatoes. The potatoes tasted fine, but the portion was small. The salad seemed a bit overpriced for what was offered--it was also very much drenched in oil. I actually left, after an entree salad and a side, pretty hungry still. We visited this restaurant with a group of three people or Sunday brunch. It looks like there was only street parking, but we were able to park a short distance away. It does not appear to be wheelchair accessible as you have to ascend a moderate incline to reach the restaurant, then claim a flight of stairs to get to the dining area. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available. The indoor rooms are small, charming, and designed to be intimate and quaint. The outdoor seating is on a patio and overlooks the main street in Weston which is quite a nice view. On this particular day there were fans and the temperatures were perfect. Service was prompt and friendly. The food was delicious, and I appreciated the fact that the bacon was crisp and a serving consisted of four pieces, instead of just two as in many other places. The signature French toast was really nice with robust chunks of chewy baguette. My friend was very impressed that the eggs were scrambled soft as she had ordered. Evidently this is difficult to achieve. The roast potatoes happened to be slightly cool on the plate, but we're still very tasty. The iced tea slightly flavored with peach, which might be offputting if you're not expecting it. This is the type of place that wants to be great but is solidly average. Let's be clear, my assessment does not indicate that you shouldn't go, enjoy the patio, and take in the picturesque town of Westin. Go, enjoy! Just know that the food is filled with shrugs and mehs. The cream of brie soup is DESPERATE for an asparagus, a mushroom or a shaved brussel sprout. The pesto chicken salad had no chicken but so much dressing that the lettuce was limp and drowning by the time you made it half way through. It could also really use a cucumber or tomato. It was just sad. The service was fantastic, friendly and efficient. The porch has great views of downtown Westin and the Fall foliage was beautifully visible. We order the mushroom ragout appetizer which came with puff pastry. Th puff pastry was under the ragout (more like soup) so it was soggy, under seasoned, and not appetizing, the one good thing was the twice baked potato soup which isn't saying much because it was so salty but at least it had seasoning. We shared the seafood pasta which had so much potential but it too was under seasoned and no matter how much salt and pepper we added it just couldn't be helped. One person had a good meal. One had an average meal. The rest were below average. The monk fish was not cooked properly. The risotto had a strange, unpleasant taste. One hamburger, ordered well done, was rare. Was returned, with bite taken out and only returned the same burger half well done. Of the two other burgers, one was good. The other was disappointing. The pasta sauce was runny, no flavor, looked like watered down ketchup. Unfortunate. The crab cakes had a lot of cracker crumbs and little lump crab. The Avalon Cafe is one of the few restaurants I'll gladly make the approximately one-hour trip from KC for. The ambiance, service, and food have been great on my previous visits, and today was no exception. As it is in an 1847 antebellum home with its original small rooms, there's not much to muffle sound, so it can be noisy. On a nice day, you might want to be outside on the patio. I recommend making reservations, especially on weekends. I chose the Grilled Seafood Platter with Chardonnay Butter Sauce, which included fresh shrimp, trout, salmon, the fish of the day, and, alas, only one lone scallop! A perfect lunch for one, or enough to share as an appetizer. I recommend asking for extra sauce. And don't skip dessert! If you like chocolate, try the Chocolate Pillars in Thunderclouds...heaven on a plate! Lora, my excellent server, was a font of knowledge about the must-see's and must-do's in Weston. We were so disappointed with our visit to Avalon Cafe. Our waitress was sweet, but not very knowledgeable about the food when we asked for recommendations. We tried the seafood appetizer and veal. The fish was over cooked, dry, and simply not edible. My husband ate the veal, but had it been me... I would have sent it back as well. It was lukewarm and very chewy. The beet salad was very good, but the chicken the waitress brought to compensate for the seafood I returned, was dry and over cooked. I really don't enjoy writing a poor review, but we will not be returning to Avalon Cafe... A great place in a little town north of KC, with a highly unique and fun menu. We made the drive up north to do a little hiking and end up here for dinner. They have a superb outside, kind-of-rooftop patio that provides a beautiful view of the small downtown, field, and sky. The toughest part of the night was choosing the entrees. They have lamb, veal, elk, quail, pork, wild boar, ostrich, duck, chicken, beef, and fish--so good luck choosing. After studying the menu like a college final, we landed on the Stuffed Quail (with pancetta, wild rice, and sun-dried tomatoes) and the Elk Strip Loin (with a port-infused gooseberry sauce). We also split the entrees, so we could try both and holy crap, they were so good! Both were cooked perfectly, seasoned very well, and highly enjoyable. They came with a nice medley of sides made up of broccoli, cabbage, carrots, beans, and mashed potatoes. The kids had burgers and loved them too.
