What a nice surprise it was to find this hidden gem in the heart of Austin! I walked in to find friendly, energetic staff who were happy to help me as I walked through the door. I wandered in off the street to find a commuter bike to travel the mile to and from work. Don and Tim helped me out and gave me a great deal on a consignment bike they had in the back. My wife and I have purchased 2 bicycles and 2 frames along with many accessories over the years here. The difference between this shop and the others downtown is that the staff will not try and upsell you, are very honest about what features of gear is going to be right for you versus marketing fluff, and they are avid cyclists/runners/swimmers themselves. My most recent purchase was a Cervelo R3 frame that I decided to build up myself. Having built up bikes before I can do it (and needed to to save some funds) but I don't kid myself that I'm a tech like these guys are. Long story short, I flubbed some setup of the rear derailleur and chain at home and brought it in, they fixed my chain and shifting issues with no charge. These guys treat their repeat customers very well and cooperate without getting defensive with people like me who try and figure it out "on their own". Best shop in town. read more

I am absolutely shocked to read so many fabulous reviews of Austin Tri-Cyclist. I find their service very unfriendly, cold, and not the least bit helpful. I really wanted to like this place but after two rather disappointing experiences, I think I'll head to another shop next time. Yes, Missy did help me by finding a wet suit rental that would fit but I wouldn't say she is overly interested in her customers. Being a first time 70.3 triathlete I was nervous and had lots of questions. I felt rather embarrassed each time I asked another question because she really didn't seem interested in helping me and seemed very distracted (although I was the only person in the store at the time). That was a month ago. Today I went in again and about 4-5 guys are all sitting around doing nothing. One kinda said to me "can I help you with something?" but didn't seem that interested in leaving his group of guys to come help. Then when I when I asked about wearing a neoprene cap for open water, another guy just said "I wouldn't" and walked off. So odd! Here's the thing - a customer comes in, needs help and is excited about their first big race. They have questions, would appreciate saying "what race are you doing?", maybe need a little reassurance that they'll do just fine... really not too much to ask if you are in the customer-service business. Even my 10 year old daughter commented how unfriendly they all seemed. One thing to note: I did notice that when a girl walked in and needed her tire repaired, a guy working there was happy to help her out. That, plus Missy's initial help, is why I gave it 1 star. read more

Very helpful, no attitude. You think this would be easy, right? Seems too hard for other shops. When I asked to use their pump, the lady came out and HELPED me. No charge. When I needed a wrench to loosen my handlebars--no charge. When I put on my cranks myself and installed them backwards, they fixed it for a nominal fee ($15). Bike box: No charge. Their outstanding service on small stuff makes this my go-to spot for bigger items. All those incidents were spaced over 3 years--I try not to mooch...but when I'm in a jam, they've helped. read more

In a bike town like Austin, it takes a lot to stand out. ATC doesn't do it by virtue of their huge location, big parking lot, giant sign or excessive advertising. They stand out by providing excellent service at fair (actually, VERY fair) prices in an entirely acceptable period of time. I've owned bicycles and have hung around bike shops since Kennedy was in the White House, so I feel qualified to judge. ATC on Barton Springs Road has the feel of the small, densely packed urban bike shops that dot the landscape in cities like Chicago and San Francisco. There is something for everyone there (well, unless you're on a Wal-Mart budget), from the always-interesting sale inventory outside to the REALLY nice custom bikes inside. People who love bikes work there and hang out there, and they don't make the non-CAT 1 sort of rider feel like a lower-class citizen (like some bike shops NOT FAR from this location can do from time to time). I'm the sort of bike person who enjoys doing his own maintenance and repair on the family's bikes (we have 4 Cannondale mountain bikes, a Cannondale tandem, a year-one Eddy Merckx Professional road bike and a Sun unicycle), yet when I don't have the know-how or the tools, I head STRAIGHT to ATC on Barton Springs Road. The folks there are really nice, and, as I said, don't make you feel stupid or unworthy. Every time I've needed fairly complicated shop-type labor done, they have satisfied me completely, and charged a lot less than I had been quoted elsewhere. (Example - to adjust a fairly tricky XT triple front derailleur to align with a new crankset = $5. Perf*rm@nce charges $15.) In a word, this IS my LBS. It should be yours, too. read more

I should start this review by saying I am a triathlete, so I may be a little biased. ATC is, without a doubt, my favorite bike shop in Austin, and we all know there are so many here. Their staff is knowledgeable on their products and can give you pointers on anything you are trying to do-- swim, bike or run. They are all friendly and willing to help you find the best item to suit your needs. They have a great bike selection to choose from and their mechanics are great. All of my services have exceeded my expectations and seem to be reasonably priced. They also have a great selection of clothing-- bike jerseys, tri suits, swimming suits, t-shirts, wetsuits, etc. I always seem to find some great bargain that I can't pass up. The store has a very laid back feel so you don't feel pressured or rushed to purchase anything. They are happy just to talk with you about what you are looking for and give you the best options. read more

ATC is awesome because of their customer service. I went in a few months ago, looking to buy either a tri bike or a road bike. Adam helped me out, showed me the difference between the two, helped me figure out which I would like more (the road bike), but I didn't feel comfortable buying then, and there wasn't any pressure from him, so I left without buying anything. A few months later, came back, Adam helped me again, set me up with a new bike and all the gear to go with it, and I got a good deal as a package (even tho the bike and gear wasn't listed online as part of being a package). I have had nothing but good experiences dealing with this shop and the people who work there. I get the impression that they use the stuff they sell and it shows. Several years ago, they let me take a Cervelo S5 for a test ride and didn't even ask for a credit card when I rolled it out of the shop. I fell in love with that bike the first few seconds I was on it and promptly purchased one. I have since taken it back to be serviced several times. The mechanics have always done excellent work. I marveled at how nice the bike felt and how smooth all the components operated after these guys gave it a tune up the last time. read more

I started out frequenting Austin Tri-cyclist when I moved to Austin in anticipation of some end of season triathlon races this past fall and getting some suggestions on biking routes in Austin. All staff were very accommodating welcoming me to Austin and giving great suggestions where to ride. Their swim selection of goggles and training equipment is pretty darn good. They have been very quick to order items that I needed for my bike and other items like shoes, race speed suits, and hydration/fueling needs for the bike. Their location is great if you're looking for a place to bring your bike and gear with ample parking to start out with Dam loop or heading out for a ride on Fitzhugh road, to later transition to a run along Lady Bird Lake. There is a difference between bike shops and bike stores. This is no big-box superstore which looks like the next superstore down the street which looks like the bike store downtown that looks like the.....you get the idea. This is a shop where they have passion for the bike. I'm saying bike but the triathlon gear is 2nd to none. If you can't find the perfect wet suit at ATC then manufacturers simply haven't made it yet. I have to agree with Alex L. for the 5-star rating, service, pricing, and ambiance. I haven't actually bought anything yet but been in here twice. Once when I was looking for a bike, I'm brand new to biking and not very rich, so beware this is a high-end bike store with bikes around $600 up, most higher than that. A few used bikes but mostly road bikes and I was looking for mountains. The staff was awesome both times tho. The first time they told me what to look out for when buying a new used bike especially from craigslist (which is what i ended up doing) and chatted with me for a good 10 min even though I clearly wasn't buying from them. I just went back to get a quote on tune-ups now that I have a used bike and while what they quoted me was pricey ($50 for basic tune-up), its the cheapest I've found so far, a few other shops are 50 the rest are more), and their tune-up seems to be more all inclusive than other shops. I think I'll be bringing my bike back for service. Normally, my preference is to support local bicycle shops. Austin Tri-Cyclist appeared to be a good local shop, and I wanted to support them. However, my experience with this bicycle shop was highly disappointing. Recently I had my Mountain bike fork serviced at Austin Tri Cylclist and the fork catastrophically failed immediately after service. The fork failure resulted in a small fracture in my forearm. The shop admittedly said they made a mistake with the rebuild, but never offered a refund on any service. In addition there were $2000.00 ( After deductible ) in medical bills occurred from the event. The owner of the shop was never truly concerned or contrite about the matter. Frankly, I found his demeanor to be very unusual, and slightly dismissive of the event . After bike racing for 20 years and working with many local bike shops - I say you can do much better . I went in the first time when shopping around for my new road bike. The guy who helped me was super friendly and even put me in a trainer to try out a bike or two. I didn't buy my bike there, but I went back today for my tri gear. The people are friendly enough, not pushy, but attentive. There is tons to pick from and they have enough clearance to satisfy any savvy shopper. I picked up a new suit, an extra top, and a sweet new car magnet to show off my accomplishments to Austin. I will continue to go back and buy more as I get deeper into Tri's. I will even buy another cool magnet to match the new one I just got today! read more

I could not be more pleased with my bike buying experience at Austin Tri Cyclists. I am from out of town, but came here bc Adam was able to help me locate and try an XS Cervelo before ordering it. I'd called four other closer dealers first and Adam was the first one to do this and not just suggest I order one sight unseen. After riding the borrowed bike and talking with him about what I wanted and how I wanted to build up my bike, he tracked exactly with me so I bit the bullet and ordered it knowing I'd have to come back to town to get it. Bike was exactly on time and when I showed up a week later, he and his mechanic did everything we'd discussed without me having to replay our conversation. The service was impeccable and I now have a beautiful new P3 with my upgraded handlebars and downsized crank. Wow, now that I see their Yelp page I understand great service isn't unusual at Austin Tri-cyclist! My husband and I had never been in, and are sporadic racing athletes *at best*, but we needed to rent wetsuits for a trip to Baja. The rental fee seemed totally reasonable and they weren't fussed with precise pick up / drop off days (which was helpful during the busy holiday season). So we get our wetsuits and set off for Mexico, but despite having tried it on and having used it one day, my husband's wetsuit tore in the crotch on day 2 of our six day trip. He kept a good humor about it, but he was pretty chilly the rest of the trip. I returned the wetsuits today and was prepared for anything - from no apology to possibly even being asked to pay damages. (One sometimes never knows!) Instead I was offered, unprompted, an apology and a refund to my card for one rental fee. It was really refreshing to experience excellent customer service in a time when it seems that's no longer the standard. Thanks ATC! We'll be back! read more

these people are consistently outstanding. I have purchased three bikes here now and every time it was a great experience. lots of selection, and every person I have ever worked with has been very patient, knowledgeable and not pushy. when you buy the bike, they let you put on whatever bike tape color you want at no extra charge (unlike some other place nearby owned by a famous person that charges for the tape, and the labor when you just spent $3k on a bike). the staff are obviously very happy, the service after the sale is amazing, and they remember you - even if it's been a year (very impressed by this). the prices are really good prices, and when I wanted to just try a bike that was at another location, they were quick to get the store to the Barton Springs location rather than pawn me off to the other store and make me go to the other store. the best of all, the owner is involved, present, and worried about making the customers happy rather than just selling a bike. although I don't live in Austin, I drive up here for pretty much all my needs as this place is by far better than anything in a 100 mile radius. read more

The guys at Austin Tri-Cyclist were patient, extremely helpful, and super friendly. They helped me get everything set up and packed (even found me a small box to help with meeting airline restrictions), and were very patiently answered all my questions. I have been shopping here for years. My purchases include a bike, nutrition, clothing, tri accessories, etc. I don't race any more and I'm not even fit. I have three kids now and this is the only place we buy goggles. Goggles for kids looking for fish at Barton Springs, goggles for summer swimming and goggles for swim meets. They have a great selection and they are always organized. Tonight I showed up at 6:55 pm. Thinking the store closed at 7pm, I walked right in. Well, they close at six. There were guys in the store working and finishing up a work out. They had no problem letting me in to select my goggles, even though they had been "closed" for 55 minutes. Spring 2012: i recommend this place for its authentic staff, great selection, and appropriate prices. my first visit was on a rainy workday morning when business was slow. if you're looking for service, this is a great time to go. i was helped by missy. she felt like a guide rather than a sales person. after getting home i price-checked online from other retailers, and i was glad to see i wouldn't have had better prices elsewhere (clothing and nutrition). Spring 2014: their service is top notch, and their responsiveness is great. -- i brought my mountain bike to a shop closer to my home that also sells cannondale mtbs to service my mountain bike, but that shop ruined my shifting and tried to sell me a new derailleur hanger and new cables to fix it. then a freelance guy who does high-end work on road bikes tried to fix things, but he couldn't. the shifting was still a disaster. then i brought my crippled bike to austin tricyclist, and my discouragement flew away as they quickly and impeccably fixed the bike. -- i brought my felt tri bike to the nearby shop that sold it to me and i asked for a tune-up. they told me to they were too busy to get it for the next ten days and set an appointment for me. so i came back the afternoon of the appointment, they said i should have brought it that morning, and they offered me an appointment another ten days out. really? so i ambled down the road to austin tricyclist, dropped off my bike, and by lunch the next day it was ready for me. i've tried nelo's, atx bikes, performance bikes, bicycle sports shop, jack and adams, and an independent guy. but all my experience persuades me that nobody takes care of me the way austin tricyclist does. read more

I have to agree with Barrett who also gave a poor review - Im surprised there are not more below-par reviews! They may sell great stuff, I really don't know because I went there for swim goggles, fins and a small bag. Bill was less than $100 and the items just didn't work out for me. Nowhere in their receipt does it say ANYTHING about returns. I guess I expected them to be like every other customer appreciating store, but they were not. They wanted to charge me to restock their items at 30% of the cost! Did I mention I bought only fins and goggles? Not a $2000 bike or something that really puts a dent into their inventory. Not happy. They will not be getting my business or my friends business. I suggest shopping at REI for your goods, they will give you cash back on any return, no questions asked. Better yet, try the other tri store just down the road from this place, they too are much more accommodating and understanding!! To me, that's what makes a business successful, NOT the items you stock. Nuff said. read more

i have entered this store 3 times - the 1st i was spoken to but i did not need anything at the time - i was riding and thought i would stop and see what the shop was about - the next 2 times no one ever approached me or spoke to me?? each time i decided i would wait and see how long it took someone to come over, but it never happened?? i know, why did i return the 3rd time, well i thought maybe i would give people another chance - i guess the trust fund was not effected by the recent economic downfall, because there would be no other reason that people who run a shop would be this dismisive unless they just don't care about customers returning. its a shame because its been around for a while and has a great location. read more
