Five stars is not enough. Everyone I encountered there was wonderful and so thoughtful and helpful. All steps and options were presented clearly. And the surgery was quick and so much easier and less uncomfortable than I had imagined. Valium as opposed to full anesthesia was important to me and much appreciated. Based on the eye exam and my available options, I expected my eyesight would improve a little and I would be able to see better at night (so important for safety while driving)... but to my surprise, I am able to see perfectly for everything except up close. Had laser surgery in both eyes. My right eye vision is not particularly satisfactory, but it may improve over time. I get a significant halo effect at night in both eyes. Sometimes in this Texas sunlight, I've had to double up using two sunglasses to cut down the brightness. It didn't help that the wrong lens was implanted in my right eye....discovered only after my birth lens was destroyed just before implantation. I found that even with multifocal lenses I still need to use weak reading glasses with my iPhone and with books/newspapers, and I need a prescription to satisfactorily correct my night driving vision. I am thinking that spending an extra $6,000 plus for multifocal lenses with laser surgery doesn't provide enough improvement over monofocal lenses to justify the expense. read more

As a physician, I evaluate practices from a medical competency and also a patient centered framework. If you like being treated as a piece of meat on a conveyor belt, preparing to be wrapped in cellophane along with all the other pieces of meat, then this is a place for you. If, on the other hand, you prefer being treated as a person, run, don't walk away from the practice. The only concern seems to be making as much money as possible. And, when the staff is discussing a surgery in the wrong eye, well, that's a sign to leave immediately. It's so disheartening to see a practice like this. You can choose another you cannot choose a better. On January 22, 2020 and January 29, 2020 I underwent cataract surgery at Austin Eye. Well when I got to Austin Eye on 40th Street and I was greeted by friendly staff at the front desk. I was given the expected paper work to fill out as a new patient. I was taken back to the exam area on time. Each person I dealt with was very professional and friendly. They all appear to be satisfied employees wanting to take the best possible care of me. During the procedure Dr. Bui verbalized what was going on with each step of the procedure and what I might expect to feel during that step. I have been a full time corrective lens wearer for over 60 years. After the second cataract surgery my vision improved in both eyes to the point that I now only need reading glasses. I've debated on this review but after 3 other 2nd opinions and having successful LASIK surgery else where, I must let others know my awful experience with Dr. Marie Bui. Here's a bit of my vision story. I've had nearsightedness since elementary school. I was the little girl with coke bottle glasses, as they called them. I had huge self esteem issues because if this, so I got contacts asap. I grew very accustomed to wearing contacts but always worried about ever needing to wear my thick glasses in public. So I decided at 39 to get LASIK finally done. Called and setup an appointment at Austin Eye. I wanted to see Dr. Wong but Dr. Bui was the first available. I was told I had to be out of my soft contacts for at minimum 5 - 7 days. I did this and boy was it humbling. I travel for work and meet with many people. I did it in my glasses because I was determined and had the long term goal in mind. I have a -9 and -8.5 prescription. I met with Dr. Marie Bui. From the moment she walked in the room she talked down to me. I suspect she thought I was some poor girl. She said in a condescending voice "so you've not been able to see since you can remember" wow, she went on to tell me I'm a candidate but not a good one. Kept referencing my age as if I'm 40 already. And that not to worry because she's 42 as well and she gets it. I was taken way back! I'm 39 and turning 40 shortly but I didn't feel this was appropriate at all. She then started messing with some stuff and said, I take it back you're not a candidate. She said to wait until I'm closer to 50 to get a lens replacement. She then implied that lens replacement was very expensive. Little does she know that money isn't an issue for me. I worked so hard to get to where I am where I can pay cash for just about anything. She racial profiled me and continued to belittle me in this appointment. She told me that me getting LASIK would immediately make me need readers seeing I'm old at 40. She said I would lose the ability to see colors and that they would look dull. She said I could go to LASIK Plus and they would do my LASIK but that I shouldn't get it and she won't do it. She ripped my hope away. The tech that was assisting her walked me to the door as if I was some poor pitiful girl. I cried in the car. I thought there was no hope. I also was blown away that racism really does still exist. I'm very versed in this area and I NEVER use this lightly but this was 100% racism and profiling by this physician. Instead of listening to her and believing I had no options until almost 50, I went to 3 other physicians at top places. I was over and over deemed a candidate!! My prescription is high but I have plenty cornea thickness to get the job done. Every other doctor said the whole reading glasses thing was false and that whatever is going to happen with my farsightedness will not be sped up by LASIK! And guess what!!! I got LASIK surgery 2 days ago!!!! I'm already 20/20 and colors are beautiful!!! Even more pretty then I'd ever seen them before LASIK. Don't see Dr. Bui!!! And little does she know, my mother got LASIK by Dr. Wong and he was phenomenal. She had a very high prescription as well 10 years ago. Dr. Bui is a liar, rude, non empathetic, and a racist! I consulted 3 eye surgeons before I made the very important decision to have lens replacement surgery with someone else. I am So Glad I did not choose Austin Eye. Their pre and post op care was not nearly as thorough as the doctor I selected. Also, Dr. Odette was going to perform the surgery but I would never see him again and would be passed on to his protege which I did not like. They were ready to schedule surgery the next week. They also said my cataracts were worse than others diagnosed so they could collect Medicare money. And since I did not use them, I was charged $595 for a consultation most of which insurance paid for but I am still responsible for $203 making my total out of pocket $268. After having my surgery with someone else and being so happy with the sole doctor who oversaw every step of my journey And his office, I would never recommend Austin Eye. read more

Recently had Lasik at Austin Eye. Great customer service and overall experience. Both my boyfriend and I got Lasik at Austin Eye (about 1 year apart) and we are both very pleased with the results and the office. Before choosing Austin Eye, I visited Eye LASIK. That place has a complicated pricing system and was a rather bland experience. The staff seems to rely on you watching 9 videos (no kidding) on an iPad and then offering you all their "specials". I saw Dr. Wong many months ago to find out if he would be an option for my cataract surgery. Since I have retinal problems, I wanted a doctor who would take care of any complications I might have. Dr. Wong seemed mostly concerned about money ---which I was more than willing to pay extra for the very best. However, I wanted someone who was focused on the medical conditions and not as focused on quoting prices. After all, I was not at a car dealership. Upon leaving, the office would not accept any payment because it had to be first filed with Medicare---which evidently takes time. After my visit, I read the reviews on the web and other patients seemed to have some trouble with billing issues. At the time, I wondered why Dr. Wong's office didn't personally take care of the issues before it became a problem. The reviews and the attitudes I experienced at my visit caused me to reconsider Dr. Wong for my surgery. OK, fast forward months later. I just got a bill --with a finance charge-- from the Austin Eye Clinic indicating "past due" in red on the outside of the envelop. Evidently, the clinic had sent me a bill the previous month which I did not notice --because I only knew the name as "Wong." Why couldn't someone had given me a call asking if I would like to make a payment? In my opinion, the billing policies and attitudes speak volumes about the clinic ..... read more

Dr. Mitchell Wong is a phenomenal opthamologist. I can honestly say he's got my contact lens prescription down, which is difficult accounting for being nearsighted with an astigmatism and wearing gas permeable contact lenses. It's his office staff and his billing practices that make for a 2 star rating. Even with insurance, his staff finds ways to charge you for extra services that aren't disclosed -- such as a separate contact lens fitting fee (even when not changing my prescription or lenses). The office staff is mercenary. It's all about shaking you down for extra cash. I've had less pressure at Jiffy Lube.... read more

My husband went in to have corrective eye surgery last May. He had originally had RK by Mitchel Wong in the 80s because he was legally blind. He had some correction but still had to wear glasses all the time and could not be corrected to 20/20. As time went on his eye sight deteriorated so we saw Shannon Wong and discussed the situation and options. He told us he could not correct his eyes to 20/20 but he will be corrected enough to see 20/20 with the aid of glasses. It has been a year and $10000 since the surgery, and he still cannot read words on the TV with glasses. So do believe everything this man says, make sure to get it in writing. He will say anything for $10000. Please have a second opinion before having this man do your surgery. read more

Oh if there were only zero stars... I went in for an eye exam and Lasik exam. A few things to note: 1.) I was told my insurance was covered there only to pay $135 out of pocket for contact fitting fees and other nickle and dime fees. BUT in fact my insurance did not cover this so an additional $140 later... 2.) I saw Dr. Shannon Wong 4 times before he figured out my contact prescription...and that's because I sent him my old prescription notating my astigmatism. I told him this the first few times but he chose to ignore and continued to do math in his head and on his iPhone... 3.) I paid for contacts and later decided to get them elsewhere because yet again the price was outrageous (you're paying for the Telsa and Porsche in the driveway). It took over 4 weeks to get my refund check back...which was subtracted $140 because my insurance wasn't accepted there. In total I paid over $275 for an eye exam that took 4 visits to get right.....avoid this place at all cost!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I've been going to Shannon Wong for over 5 years. He's extremely good. I have a couple of eye conditions that he monitors that have a variety of treatment options. He's very up front about what the risks and costs are. He's consoled me to hold off on a specific procedure that might help my vision until he's sure it will help. He's extremely competent, explains everything very thoroughly and treats you like you're an intelligent participant in your own eye care. Additionally, he's just a nice guy. His nursing staff is also very competent and friendly. For example, during my last visit, I get "catgirl". She's a riot and of course, my favorite. During the pre-exam eye chart reading she's giving my a raft of shit about anything and everything. Typical. I get to one of the lines in the chart that starts: B I me: wow that's blurry catgirl: just read what you think it is me: ok T C H That scores me a quick kick in the leg and a snarky comment about me wearing a pink striped shirt. I tell her I'm telling Dr. Wong and I'm going to get her fired. Catgirl smirks. On my way out, she says something about not talking to guys with pink shirts, I say "like I'd talk to you anyways" and she gives me a high 5. I'm sure she's really standard nice to the other patients and will treat you all really well. I highly recommend Dr. Shannon Wong. read more

I don't tend to splurge much, except maybe for sushi and...well, sushi. But sometimes you have to loosen the ol' money belt and make a big purchase. I did so almost two years ago to get Lasik at the Austin Eye Clinic, and it was well worth the fairly hefty price. I'm so glad I had my Lasik. No, "glad" isn't strong enough. I'm delighted. It has definitely improved the quality of my life, and how often can you say that about a purchase? Sushi has never done anything for me (stupid selfish sushi). Now I can fall asleep on the couch watching another rerun of "Scrubs" without having to pry my contacts off my eyeballs when I awake. I can easily crash at a friend's house when we stay up too late chatting and drinking wine and she's way the hell up on Parmer. I don't have to wear glasses during cedar season when my eyes are too irritated for contacts. And I can see. Dr. Shannon Wong was great. He clearly knows his stuff, and he's pleasant yet efficient. And adorably, you get a Polaroid photo of you with Dr. Wong taken immediately post-surgery. Too cute. Best of all, Dr. Wong signs it for you like he's a rock star. I've been going here annually (or more) since my first visit back in 2007, and had occasion to get an exam again recently in order to make sure my new "sunglasses with readers built-in" had the right prescription. Boy am I glad I went in. As part of the routine examination, Dr. Shannon Wong checked my intra-ocular pressure (IOP) which can be a warning sign of glaucoma if elevated. Mine is. He reviewed my historical records and a really cool optic nerve fiber thickness laser scan thing they had done three years ago, compared it to one done this week in the office (takes about 30 seconds and prints out a chart that looks like weather radar during a thunderstorm). The comparison showed that I have lost some nerve fiber and that clinically I have glaucoma, albeit very minor and diagnosed very early. Scary stuff, since glaucoma has no symptoms until it causes permanent sight loss. Nerve fiber loss is permanent; lose too many fibers and your vision becomes tunneled, and eventually goes to black. Fortunately the body has lots of extra nerve fibers in the optic nerve, and I have not lost too many yet. Dr. Wong calmly explained the issue, namely that the "drain" inside my eye was "clogged" so that the fluid that ordinarily flows in and out cannot flow out, raising my IOP. I need to "open the drain," something I can do with daily eye drops, or a simple laser procedure with a long name, (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty see http://www.glaucoma.org/treating/a_new_type_of_g.php ), that kind of unclogs the drain with an space age multi-frequency roto-rooter ray. With animated video of the anatomy of the eye, detailed explanation of the laser scans and a through explanation of the eye drop therapy and the potential laser drain cleaning procedure, Dr. Wong once again provided me with all the information I could possibly have asked for, and a sense of security that my eyes were in good hands. When I asked for a call back with a question about a medication I use that might aggravate the IOP, I was told to email the doctor, who got back to me in less than 8 hours with a thorough response. Professional treatment, state of the art facilities, thorough exams, compassionate consultation and explanation of treatment alternatives and detailed followup--no wonder this practice is expanding and has added another doctor and more treatment and exam rooms. I kept going back so that I wouldn't have to pay for a new eye exam somewhere else, but it looks like I am going to have to do just that. I don't recommend this office for that reason. read more

I've been a patient of this practice since it opened in 2002. And I was a patient of Dr. William McCaleb (one of its original partners) since the early 1970's, so this is a comment from a 45+ year patient of the practice and its forerunners. I've never been let down by the doctors' skill in ophthalmology. Today, however, I was severely let down by its business practices. Long story short, the business department and Dr. Shannon Wong personally were willing to let me walk away as a patient/client over a matter of $183. If they had simply explained what was required to use Medicare for the first time, (and I had called to ask beforehand) I would have set my yearly appointment for less than a month later and saved the $183. I don't know--seems like 45+ years as a loyal client/patient deserved more than that. But Dr. Shannon Wong thought otherwise. See you--pun intended, sadly. read more

These guys are amazing. You only have two eyes that you can never replace. When it came down to it, I needed to have cataract surgery. After doing some research into cataracts and doctors in Austin, I definitely recommend these doctors. I have placed my trust in them knowing their experience, leading edge equipment, and facility. Now I know how costly the operation is. However, when it comes down to it I've chosen Austin Eye because I'm willing to spend more money for their proven track record and the modern technology used in my operation. I mean, why go elsewhere and risk your eyes to save a couple grand? Its pretty amazing to know that a computer guided laser made tiny incisions in my cornea and made the cuts on the natural lens. Decided that I wanted to take the next step and schedule an exam. The son, Shannon Wong, was wonderful. The testing is very thorough. Actually found out I'm not a candidate for the in and out procedure. Mine would be more involved...longer recovery time. I really felt they were looking out for my best interest. Had an appt for a Lasik consultation and halfway through paperwork I was informed I would not be seen. Apparently, the Dr refused to have a consultation with me due to the kind of HEALTH insurance I had. Keep in mind, this procedure is not covered by insurance and I would have been paying out of pocket. If this clinic is going to have nonsensical stipulations that preclude people from being seen, they should do a better job of vetting potential patients over the phone. I could have easily told them when arranging my appt who my insurance carrier was, and they could have told me right then and there they will not make an appt. As it was, I took time off from work, drive 30 mins, only to be turned away. They should learn to have more respect for people's time and trouble. read more

I did not have a good experience at the Jollyville location. Time wait is horrible and the doctor could not figure out my prescription for contacts and glasses. I also did not appreciate patient confidentiality is not honored. When I was in my exam room, I could hear everything the patient next to me was saying to his doctor. I heard he was an elderly man driving in from Taylor, I heard his diagnoses, he will be needing surgery, etc. I do not think this elderly man would appreciate a random stranger hearing his conversation with his doctor. I guess they have not heard about HEPPA laws. I will not be returning here as a patient. read more

I had lasik eye surgery almost 15 yrs ago but with age I guess my close up vision deteriorated badly where it was getting hard for me to read a menu at restaurants or even use my iPhone without glasses. I met with Dr Shannon Wong at Austin Eye and after all the tests were done I decided to have surgery and use the new panoptix lens which is supposedly will address my vision issues and provide me with a good vision from far , close and medium range. The team from start to finish were amazing. The staff are very helpful, professional and caring and explain everything properly. Although I did not see Dr Shannon on the day of the surgery for long I knew I was in good hands. There was no pain other than my own anxiety of what to expect. The second day I had a follow up and my vision was great so much better I did not need glasses to see close up and by the third day I was working on my computer without the aid of glasses. So far so good and better than I expected. I am thankful to Dr Shannon and team for their help. I would strongly recommend Austin Eye to anyone with a similar issue. Extremely misleading payment structure. I got several hundreds dollars bill a few weeks later that wasn't expected. Also when I asked if doctor will use any drops during comprehensive exam - they told me 'no'. Guess what, drops were used. They just sold me the most expensive exam. I came here to see Dr. Odette after an awful chain of events at Eye Physicians of Austin (see my yelp review for a good laugh). I chose the practice because of the "Shanon and Mitchel Wong" underwriting on KUT. Fortunately, they were able to get me an appointment within a few days. Dr. Odette didn't waste any time, and removed several chalazia off my eye the same day as my appointment, instead of making me wait for another visit. (It only took 7 minutes or so.) The nurse and desk staff were very friendly. During the surgery, which was less than pleasant, he kept my mind off the needles getting stuck in my eye with poignant questions and lively conversation. Minus one star for the hour-long wait in the waiting room. At least the magazines are current, couches comfortable, and there is a large TV and wifi, if you're into that. When I asked the desk what was taking so long, the woman was very apologetic about the wait, and to their credit, the doctor did see me within a minute of my arrival in the exam room. But my feathers get a lil ruffled when a practice threatens last-minute cancellation charges and then doesn't hold up their end of the deal. Still, I would definitely go here again. read more

For those of you having cataract surgery I wanted to alleviate a fear for you just in case you have an overactive imagination like I do! You CANNOT see anything at all coming toward your eye during surgery like in the scary movies I saw as a child. This unfounded fear created so much unnecessary anxiety for days before the surgery right up until the actual surgery. The surgery was fast and there was no pain. They also have a wonderful lady that is a great hand holder if you need one. The staff is caring and Dr. Bui was wonderful. I have my other eye done next week and there will be no anxiety for me.....it is a breeze. read more

I first met Doctor Shannon Wong in 1997. He preformed LASIK on both eyes and I was instantly able to see perfectly without my glasses. Fast forward 14 years. I am now 44. I returned to Austin Eye because I was having trouble reading due to the onset of presbyopia and was tired of wearing glasses to read or not having them when I needed them. I am happy to say that I am posting this without the use of glasses. Dr. Wong and Austin Eye have me seeing and reading again. I can use my cellphone without looking like an old man and even read the menu in my favorite dimly lit restaurant without the use of a candle and reading glasses. This is one of the best run medical offices I have ever experienced. I am always surprised by how fast I am brought back and how soon Dr Wong is there to see me. It seems as though I am never waiting. Even the day of my procedure I was done and on my way just 40 minutes after arriving. Fantastic - finally doctors, nurses and staff that care! Austin Eye is really a first class operation. I went to Dr. John Odette and got Lasik and I ran in a half marathon two days later without glasses or contact. It is incredible. I would highly recommend them. I had originally gone to Mann Eye and besides being tough to work with, the receptionist (yes the receptionist) took all my measurements. Not a great feeling.
