My eye doctor (not with Texan Eye) said that I needed cataract surgery and of course I conducted extensive research (including using AI) to find the best in the Austin area. Good news is I found Dr Tom Walters, MD at Texan Eye who is clearly the most knowledgeable, experienced, and highest rated cataract and laser surgeon with the best record of success in all of Texas and likely beyond. Also good news is he determined that I did not need to get cataract surgery at this time as my vision could be corrected to 20/20 at all distances with glasses with the latest progressive lens technology. I am so blessed to have gone to Dr Walters for a second opinion on having cataract surgery on both eyes. The first doctor that examined me said both eyes needed surgery and recommended the expensive new lenses. My intuitions kept telling me to get another opinion, and it is so fortunate that I did. My eyes have only the vague beginnings of cataracts and my insurance would have denied coverage because my vision issues are correctible with glasses! Condescending Swindler - KEEP LOOKING FOR A DIFFERENT SURGEON Having done my homework and having a decent amount of ophthalmic knowledge already due to my job I came to Texan Eye for a consultation regarding lens replacement and vitrectomy (to address floaters from PVD). I saw Dr Walters who told me to go elsewhere for the vitrectomy because he did not have that much confidence in the retina specialists at Texan Eye. He also said that I would need to get the vitrectomy done first before replacing the lens. I went to a retina specialist. He told me that I would need to have the lens replaced before the vitrectomy because cataract surgery can sometimes cause floaters. When I went back to Dr Walters I had a clear plan already in mind. I wanted a specific multifocal lens so I wouldn't need glasses moving forward. Dr Walters repeatedly tried to convince me that I should instead have a monofocal lens with one eye for distance and the other for near vision. I took his suggestions to heart and did some more research. I was not convinced by the information I found and insisted that the mutlifocal lens was what I wanted. I had to make yet another appointment in order to speak with him and inform him of my decision. When I went in I was given an optical biometry test (IOLMaster) (for the 3rd time) before I saw the doctor. When I finally saw him I expressed my decision and we began the same old back and forth. When I asked him to explain why he was so adamantly against multifolcal lenses he said, and I quote, "I'm not in the business of educating my patient but you seem like a sharp guy so..." He then proceeded to explain to me the most basic structures of the eye and drew me a picture with such condescension that I almost stopped him to ask if he'd prefer to do the drawing in crayon but I held my tongue and ended up scheduling the surgery anyway reasoning that only a REALLY good physician could have such a large ego. When scheduling the appointment (and before) I went out of my way to make absolutely certain I understood exactly what the cost of the procedure would be. The day I arrived at the surgery center I went through all of the details of the surgery with the staff to make sure nothing about the plan had changed. I discovered that the lens the surgery center had on file to implant was a MONOFOCAL! This was infuriating! After all the discussion and extra time it took for me to insist on the lens of my choice it appeared that he was just going to do what he wanted. When I confronted him about this he finally conceded to use a multifocal but he would only use the brand that he wanted and not the TECNIS Symfony® Toric EDOF IOL that I requested. I even almost went along with that (don't ask me why) but when I discovered that the cost of the surgery was going to be TWICE as expensive as I was told it would be I had them reverse the charges on the card I had already given them and walked out. Now, a year later... I get a letter in the mail stating that I've been sent to collections for the IOLMaster test I had to get in order to see (and argue) with the doctor about what lens I was going to get! I've paid the balance... grudgingly. There are so many physicians to choose from in Austin there is absolutely no need to endure this one's manner and dealings. Dr Walters recently did my cataract surgery, he and his staff were a pleasure to deal with.

I tried tried Dr. Walters at Texan Eye because they were convenient and the personal reviews for Dr. Walters were excellent. I had both eye's lens replaced because of cataracts. I got a second opinion from AustinEye just to make sure everything was OK. The doctors agreed on most of the time but they found different long term problems, mostly minor. Dr. Walters is one of the leading eye doctors in Austin and he goes to Africa and South America to do free cataracts. The biggest difference in these two businesses is in the surgical care they give you. Texan Eye (Texan Surgery Center) has an anesthesiologist present for the surgery, while Austin Eye does the surgeries in-house and gives you a vallium so don't get too excited. Both require a dedicated ride to and from the surgery. I feel they are both good, but chose Texan Eye and am very happy with my decision. The people were very competent, friendly and helpful, and the procedures went smoothly without any problems. It only takes about 10 minutes. No pain, and you are awake the whole time, just a little sleepy. You nap most of the afternoon afterwards. read more

"Look, the trees have leaves"...I told my Mom as we were on our way home after I received my first set of glasses, over 60 years ago... . For me, in the spring of 2014, the leaves did not return...so, I asked some physician and surgeon customers/friends of mine who they would have do their cataract surgery? Dr. Tom Walters recently did cataract surgery on both my eyes at the Texan Eye Surgery Center. I was really apprehensive about the surgery, but his staff and the surgery team put me at ease. After the surgeries (each eye was done one week apart), I was amazed at how well I could see, and how bright everything was. There were virtually no after effects, just a slight scratchiness in the operative eye a day or two after the surgery. My vision in each eye is now better than 20/20. The reviews I'd read on Dr. Walters and the fact that he was voted (by other doctors) to be one of Texas Monthly's Super Doctors were totally accurate. I was recently in to see Dr. Walters for my routine checkup. I was thinking about my how much I appreciate him and love my LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Walters did my surgery 10 years ago. It was one of the best decision I have ever made. My only regret is that I didn't do it soon. I think of all of the years I wasn't able to see in the mornings until I got my contacts in. Or not being about to see the clock or my phone if I woke up in the middle of the night. It is awesome to have perfect vision.
