I arrived about 5 to 10 minutes before they open to drop off a roll a film. I'm also holding a baby. Someone comes to the door to let an employee in, looks at me, doesn't say a word then closes the door and locks it. The front of the store is ALL GLASS, so I will assume they SEE ME standing there...with a baby...while I can plainly see them just sitting there I guess waiting for 10am on the dot to put their punch card in the old timey clock and unlock the door. I figured if they can't be bothered, I wouldn't be bothered to buy the pack of paper or a couple rolls of film (as I had intended). I would be less annoyed by that if the negative I got back wouldn't have had so much dust. read more

I have been doing some business here lately and I have been really impressed. I bought a camera, lens and also had some prints done and have had no problems with any of the three. I was really impressed when I ordered some prints online and an hour later I get a phone call saying they are ready for pick up. The quality of the images are superb and the price to print is cheaper than the other camera store. Their customer service is fantastic. I was treated very courteous and professional and they answered my questions very quickly. This is what a neighborhood camera shop should be like. read more

I took some old precious family photos to be copied. They took such care of them and some of the prints actually look better than the original. The price was reasonable for the large number of pictures and they finished them in good time. I have to drive from Lago Vista, but it is worth it for the quality and value they offer. I'll never go anywhere else for anything camera or film or photo! read more

I *really* wanted to love this place and support local Austin business. Its a convenient location, its a really neat little space, its extremely dog-friendly, and I was in need of a camera repair/ perhaps some rentals in the interim while my camera got a part swapped out. Unfortunately, my experience was not a wholesome one. I received little communication and multiple accounts of poor service for something that seemed relatively straightforward. It may be worth mentioning that I am extremely novice in all things camera-related, and I'm completely unfamiliar with the industry. Thats why I deferred to the folks here at Austin Camera & Imaging. So here's the timeline. On June 14th, I dropped off my camera and asked for a quote. Seemed simple enough, so I put a deposit down, and I wasn't worried about a super quick repair. Perhaps I should have asked what standard turnaround times were then, because no one mentioned anything. So I went on my merry way, happy to be doing business with such a neat little store. I needed a camera the next week for a work event, and so I reached out a few days later. Early the next week I called to see if I could get an estimate price, average turnaround time, and to see if I could get a rental for a couple days in the meantime. When I called, I was told it takes 7-10 days for a technician to even see cameras needing repairs and he seemed rather incredulous that I would even expect that they could have learned anything in merely a couple of days! And cool, I don't know any better, that sounds fine. So I got a rental- which was relatively painless- albeit I stood there for half and hour there waiting for a contract to be drawn up when that seems like something they easily could have done before I got there, as I had already called and specified all the details. But I digress from that run-on. So I waited another week, and when we needed a camera yet again, called to check on it, and get a rental if it wasn't ready yet. At this point, it had been about two weeks since I dropped the thing off, and my math says that is beyond 7-10 days. Unfortunately nobody had even looked at my camera, and it wasn't even next in line. An extremely disgruntled technician (I believe they only have one technician) told me they were running behind a few days and MOST places take an average of a month to a month and a half for repairs. He also didn't have time to get me rental. This unfriendly technician then begrudgingly informed me that he would deign to take a quick look at my camera to appease me, this obviously unreasonably impatient customer, with an estimated price range. I did express that I would have liked to have been told to expect such a delay, but I was happy to hear he would soon look at my camera. I got a call shortly after with the quote for $300ish dollars, and promised a call back before the end of the week with a more specific estimate. Alas, that call never came. A week later, three weeks since I had originally been told "7-10 days," I was done. At this point, I was dreading calling them, since I had repeatedly dealt with seemingly rushed and condescending employees. But I couldn't wait around for who-knows-how- long for absolutely negligent communication. (Even just a little correspondence on the matter would have put me at ease.) I went ahead and called and asked if I could pick up the camera, take it elsewhere, and possibly get my deposit back? I got the nicest employee this place seems to have on the phone (Matt, I believe), and he indicated that I merely slipped through the cracks, and this was completely outside of the norm. So I came to pick it up the next day. Unfortunately, it was someone else that I had to deal with while extracting my camera. The guy went on and on about how I was next in line and they wanted to send it elsewhere for another specialist, and there was a call scheduled for that day, etcetera. While he got my camera and wrote me a check for my deposit he told me how he was just terribly concerned that if I took it elsewhere, it would just delay my repair even FURTHER because again a month/month and a half is typical, etc, etc. So I took my deposit and my camera (and my dog) and left, happy to not have to deal with these people anymore. I drove down the street to Precision Camera, walked in with the camera, and asked for a repair. The man took one look at it and said "okay, we'll order the part and that might take up to a week, but we'll get this back to you within a week and a half. It should be around 160-180 dollars for parts and labor. Oh and if you take this to a Canon authorized repair place it costs a flat rate of $208 repairs, just so you know- for life." That was the first of August. On the FOURTH of August I got a call saying "Your camera is ready for pick up, its gonna be $170." So no, I won't be going back to this place. Just go up 2.6 miles to Precision Camera and save your time and pride. read more

I truly wanted to support and love this place but I had a pretty terrible experience there a few weeks ago. I was in need of some 11x14 darkroom trays as I recently acquired an 11x14 ULF camera and will be developing some big 11x14 B&W negatives soon. I found a bunch online but was out running errands and thought that I would stop in to Austin Camera and see if I could support a local business, which I'd much prefer. I arrived and neither of the two gentleman working seemed at all interested in engaging with me (the sole customer in the store). I finally said "hello, how's it going?" and was received with what seemed like an annoyed or at least very distracted "yes what can I do for you I'm very busy". Admittedly, it did look like he was working on printing/processing of some digital images of some sort. "Do you all happen to have any 11x14 darkroom trays" "I think I have some in the back" He brought out a stack of 3 completely stained and filthy 11x14 darkroom trays. Honestly, I could care less about the stained/filthy part as I'm happy to put some elbow grease into it and clean them up. "How much are they?" "$16" "$16 for all of them correct?" "No, $16 a piece" "I can buy 3 brand new trays for $20 total" "That's what it is" And that was it, I said "Hope you all have a good day" and left and will likely never return. Keep in mind the other gentleman never even looked up much less engaged in conversation. I want to support a local place like this as I've been a film photographer for 15+ years here in Austin and in an ideal world I'd come to them for as much of my supply needs as I could, but with an experience like this it most definitely didn't garner a desire to return. read more

I went in here for the first time to check it out as I've always heard great things. When I walked in it was a lot smaller than expected and there was lighting and equipment everywhere and very unorganized. It was overwhelming to walk in and see a mess... I wasn't sure if that's how it always was or just in that moment. I looked at the few items they have for accessories but during that time not one person greeted me at all. Although I was just browsing with no intention to buy anything, a simple "hello" would have gone far. I ended up leaving after a few minutes since there wasn't much to look at and I didn't have a camera or rentals to inquire about (at least not yet). I'm not sure if I'll go back. read more

They are amazing at what they do and store your negatives far longer than is reasonable if you forget to pick them up.

I was so excited to find this place. It was an awesome substitute to the bigger, very pretentious "other" camera store in town. I visited this shop 5 times in a 2 month period (which is saying a lot since the drive from the Cedar Park area is horrendous)! I was hooked. I bought some used lenses for super cheap, scored a repair on an old Polaroid, and used their print services (which were awesome). No one that helped me judged my silly questions and they all seemed genuinely happy to help me out. Sounds like an awesome love story, so why the 2 stars? I ordered an adapter so I could use some old Pentax lenses on my Nikon D750. The owner ordered it for me on a Monday and said it should be in that Thursday. Awesome. I added their phone number to my phone so I would make sure to know when they called. I hadn't heard anything a week later and was in the area for a haircut, so I called and talked to this lovely young lady. She checked and said it still wasn't there. She said "You know, you don't have to call us, we will call you when it gets here". Oh ok, cool! Fast forward 3 weeks. I am shooting a wedding in 2 days and was planning on using one of the Pentax lenses. I know she said they'd call me, but I was in the area and called again. I got the owner. He went to check on my order and told me "Yeah, it came in. We called you a few times and you never answered and never came so we sold it." _ Ummm. What. I told him I had ordered it so I could use it for a wedding and really needed it. I could have ordered from B&H or gone to the "other" store but I wanted to give this little local place some love. He (the owner) just shrugged it off and didn't even offer to order me another one. He did absolutely nothing to help remedy the situation. I told him about how I saved their number in my phone and know for a fact they never called. Again, nothing. I loved this place and wanted to keep loving it but crappy customer service, especially from the owner, is not cool. I get that it wasn't a huge sale, but those little things are what make people come in for the big things. I was going to buy a Contax they had on display but will look elsewhere now. read more

Came here a few weeks ago with 3x24 35mm rolls and I needed them done on a tight schedule. Matt was so kind and patient and actually got the rolls developed and printed impossibly quick. I came again a couple weeks later with two rolls, one black and white and one color negative. Matt was also very helpful. The results are the great and are finished in a timely manner. Austin Camera and Imaging also offers a matte option for prints. Great place to be and they have a couch where you can hang out. The parking garage is also free and convenient. It's got a nice "dorm room" feel to it; a little messy but cosy. I am in love with this place. read more

Where do I start? These guys are amazing. They don't just know everything digital, they know film. I even love the way the place smells. They have a great selection of vintage/historic and more recent, large, medium and 35mm format camera equipment and film to pro DSLRs to digital and film point and shoots. They've always done a great job developing 35mm color and black and white film in house and the negatives always come home clean. They have developed a roll of color film for me in less than an hour. The price is about what you'd pay at Walgreens, but without the dust or the botched negatives. The black and white takes longer, maybe a day or two. Matt and the rest of the staff are knowledgeable and happy to share information if you need it. They are helpful and any browsing experience is low pressure and a pleasure. It's fun to just hang out. I started my film journey here and have had over 700 exposures of 35mm color and black and white film developed here. This is my go-to place for all things camera and film related in the ATX. read more

I recently moved back to Austin, and was looking for a place to get my film developed. I live right near Precision, but I was floored by their price for having prints made from film. After doing a little bit of searching, Austin Camera came up and I decided to give them a try. The guy who took my film was friendly and courteous, and they got my film turned around in just a couple of days. But that's not even the best part. If you're a lover of vintage cameras (like I am) this store is like finding a little piece of Nirvana. Yes, they do carry a modest stock of modern equipment (and can probably order things they don't have on hand), but it's so much more fun to browse through their vintage collection. Some are on display around the store and can be easily picked up and looked at, and others (the more expensive/collectable) are in a display case. And it turns out they have more in the back. I went in with my newly acquired Nikkormat in search of an eye piece (something to help protect my glasses from getting scratched). The guy who helped me (different than before) looked high and low and tried several different things before finally finding just exactly what I was thinking of. If I weren't a totally broke graduate student, I'd do some serious damage to my bank account in that store. And, bonus, there is a free parking garage, instead of parking in a lot and having your car turn into a blast furnace. Makes staying a browsing that much more enticing. read more

I have been working with Austin Camera & Imaging now for almost a year now and I will say they do great work. The Staff are great and prices are very reasonable. They are also open 7 days a week. I feel that is sometimes unheard of in some industries, and I'm off on Sunday so I love that they are open on Sundays. I used to live on Slaughter and found one other imaging place down there that I used and liked a lot and after moving up North I was so excited to find that right inside Amli is Austin Camera & Imaging. They now have tons of cool Colorful cameras for sale all sorts of great stuff but I have only purchased Prints and Dry Mounted Prints from them. Amazing quality and Great Customer service, a company you can go back to again and again. As an experienced photographer that loves to travel, I have seen many different places and A.C&I. has been my favorite. I have purchased small and large prints from them, The Dry Mountings Quality is Wonderful! Just like some other reviewers here I really want to like this place, it has so much potential for anyone interested in photography and I would rather support a smaller independent shop but these guys really need to work on customer service. Several times now I have gone in and never been greeted by any of the employees while looking at expensive equipment or stood by the counter for what felt like 20 minutes and when I did try to get their attention they seem bothered and annoyed. Several other reviewers have also said they were not greeted and a simple "Hello, how can I help you" would go a long way. Maybe hiring someone just to be a store clerk and helping customers in the store would be a smart move as the employees seem to be doing other work and not focusing on customers. Their film processing is reliable and the prints I've gotten from them have been great too, but Austin Camera really needs to work on being more attentive to their customers. I planned on supporting a small local business and decided to visit this store. I browsed around, wanting nothing in particular just noting what's available and what's not. Before leaving, I thought of making a small purchase to show my support and took a used ML-13 remote for Nikon to the cashier. Know how much it rang up - $25. MSRP price for a used item. The item didnt have a price tag, like a few others. Disappointed, I cancelled my purchase. Wouldn't be going back - I'd go to Precision Cameras instead. read more

Simply awesome. I stumbled on to this store after needing a basic document printed in color after driving around in the area only to realize that there is no Staples, Office Depot or any sort of print shop in the area. I walked in and the owner Matt was very welcoming and accommodated the print that i was needing even though most of their printing are photo and digital printing. They went out of there way and printed my single document that i was needing. In the process i checked out their prices for some of the services they provided and i realized i would be needing them for some of my future projects because they have very reasonable pricing and obviously great customer services. Highly recommend just stopping through this shop to simply check it out some of their cool shop with all the vintage cameras. read more

This place is the best! My girlfriend and I are just getting into photography and really dont know anything about our equiptment or photo processing. The staff has been super friendly and ridiculously helpful. They always meet our daft questions with a welcoming demeanor and invaluable advice. We've had our photos processed there at fantastic rates and they have always gotten our prints out quicker than we've expected. Every time we leave we talk about how great it is to go there. I needed to sell Camera Equipment that had an original cost of in excess of $4K. This is good equipment. The tech spent nearly 30 minutes looking over the equipment. then offered me $25.00 for 4 cameras expensive Zoom Lens and expensive Flash attachment and other extras. What an insult. I was visiting Austin this last week not only did they help me out with purchasing some 35mm film but I was also in a tight pinch and needed to print a couple documents which they immediately took the time to help me with. I got the best service at this great spot..I needed some photos printed from my phone..these guys have a kiosk that has a wireless system that I was able send photos from my phone easily...while they were printing the photos I checked their great selection of vintage cameras...I am in the market for one and will for sure be coming to buy one. read more
