Unfortunately, my second experience was still disappointing. The smothered pork chops were alright, but the sides missed the mark for me. The macaroni and cheese tasted like it was mostly extra-sharp cheese without the balance and creaminess I expect. The greens lacked that deep, seasoned, smoky flavor that really makes Southern-style greens stand out. There was no sign that smoked meat had been used to season them, and they tasted more like they came straight from a can. My parents are from the South, so I grew up around soul food, and this just wasn't the kind of flavor I'm used to. I know taste is personal and maybe others enjoy it, but for me it didn't bring back that nostalgic, home-cooked soul food experience I was hoping for. I really wanted to like it, especially since good soul food can be hard to find in this area, but I don't see myself returning.
