Ye olde front door and signage.

I stopped in last night with a friend. I've driven by a thousand times but never had the opportunity to stop and check it out. Aunt Bea's at first blush resembles a Dairi-O inside, and they sell similar food, but Aunt Bea's has a much larger menu and BBQ. I order the chuckwagon plate with a side of spicy potato wedges and a side of chili cheese fries. It was a total fried-potato-fest. The chuckwagon is essentially a battered and deep fried hambuger patty. Personally, I think it needed a little more seasoning, but there is always ketchup or barbeque sauce. A1 would have done the trick. The spicy potato wedges were not spicy, not even remotely, but they tasted fine otherwise. The chili cheese fries were pretty good. Gloopy and ready to induce heartburn as God intended. (I didn't have heartburn, but I thought it might.) My friend got a cheeseburger, and he said it was decent, but the patty didn't have a lot of flavor. The service was excellent. The girl at the front was so friendly! The atmosphere of the joint is very family friendly, and I could tell that there are plenty of regulars with kids that come there often. They had a pretty nice ice cream selection, and maybe next time I stop in, I'll try some.

Stopped in today primarily for coffee but they only had Splenda, which isn't a healthy option for sweetener so we passed on that. I got an egg biscuit and my husband got strawberry cobbler. He said the cobbler was really good. My biscuit was extremely greasy and the egg bland so this is not something I would order again. If we had eaten in I'm sure I could have added salt and pepper which would have helped but it wouldn't have degreased the biscuit. I don't think we will stop here again.

Perfect coffee.

Aunt Bea's BBQ was a simple delight if you are looking for kind people, good service and basic simple food. This is reminiscent of the greasy spoon or local family run restaurants I stopped at for a quick bite in younger years in college or after a long night. Not a lot of frills but instead you will get Counter service with a hometown vibe that removes the extra flair many modern restaurants have. If you are looking for a franchise or a bunch of bells and whistles avoid this gem. If you desire your basic creature comforts and some local charm, stop in. Remember we get what we give in life. Everyone was great and the French toast and sides were fantastic! Will be back!

BBQ Sandwich - note the MUSTARD!

If the real Aunt Bea had served Andy barbecue like this, he would have locked her up with Otis, and tossed away the key. The pork was tender, moderately chopped, but with no flavor, and no hint of smokiness. There was little meat on the sandwich I ordered, not much slaw, but there was MUSTARD (check the picture), making the whole mess even worse. The Hot Dog was only marginally better. This is one of 5 of these restaurants, all in this part of the state, or in SW Va. It's basically a fast food sort of setup, servinf breakfast all day, burgers and sandwiches, and some country cooking items. Some of what they serve may be good, what I tried was not.

Lexington Barbecue was a fun stop with friends and exactly the kind of place where it is all about…read morethe food. The dining room is nothing fancy. There is a counter area when you first walk in and booths and tables in a dining room. Our servers were friendly and it seemed like all of the servers were checking in with us to see if we needed any refills. I had the chopped pork with slaw, served simply on a cardboard plate. There is nothing polished or pretentious about this place, but the BBQ was great. Even better were the hush puppies. Honestly, I could have made a meal out of those alone. I did not try the desserts, but others at the table said they were very good. Overall, this was a casual, enjoyable stop with great BBQ and hush puppies worth remembering.

I was underwhelmed that time but thought maybe it was because they were out of something I had wanted...a normal circumstance at bbq places. So when driving through recently, I decided to give it another go. What I realized this time is that the only barbecue product they have is pork shoulder...no ribs, no chicken, no brisket. (They do have fried fish) It is very lightly smoked and the sauce is a very thin watery substance. I understand that this is Carolina bbq....the place was packed, everyone looked happy, and someone looked over the divider and asked me if this was the best food I had ever had?? I was polite, but realize now that I am more of a Texas bbq guy....meat being really smoked....perhaps a little bit charred with a thick sauce, sometimes sweet or spicy but always with a decidedly hickory flavor. The place is very friendly and clean, we were seated promptly and the food came out quickly. Great fries and hush puppies!!

I got the sliced beef sandwich combo with slaw, okra, and sweet tea. My mom just wanted peach cobbler and okra, and we added potato salad and banana pudding for ourselves. Everything was fresh and full of flavor. The pulled pork was tender and not dry. My sliced beef was juicy and seasoned well. The hushpuppies were good, crispy outside, soft inside. The fried okra was cooked right and not greasy. The potato salad surprised me in a good way, it had slices of bacon in it, which was different but actually really good. The banana pudding was good and creamy, and the peach cobbler was good too. Portions are generous. It's a lot of food for the price and definitely worth it. Service was good,we were in and out. No long wait. The ambience was good too. Nice spot, plenty of parking, easy to pull in and grab the food. No complaints at all when it comes to the service or the atmosphere. Overall, solid food, good service, good atmosphere. We'd definitely go back.

The staff was very friendly and helpful with answering some questions about the menu. They know the menu well and was knowledgeable of the preparation. I ordered the country fried chicken with gravy that is served over mashed potatoes with a hot roll and a side fried okra. It was a plate special for just under $10. Food came out hot and the chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Juicy and tender. I don't think the gravy was made from scratch but it was good white, peppered gravy. The mashed potatoes were real potatoes, not boxed. The okra may have been the frozen kind but it was fried and seasoned perfectly. I also ordered some ranch dressing on the side to dip the okra and chicken in and it was made from scratch ranch dressing and some of the best ranch I've ever had. The roll was like a breadstick and it was freshly baked, served hot and may have been made from scratch. It was a really good hot roll. Overall appearance was that it looked like it has been around for a while but had a cute, country diner vibe going on. I would eat there again if I'm passing through and would recommend to anyone wanting country style food with good service. The price was very reasonable with big, generous portions.
