I grew up near this location and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I had a voucher for a free tray after an unfortunate experience in Lexington where my order was wrong despite the cashier verifying it with my sister when she placed it. I'd also had a bad experience getting an order at a different Cook Out location but had no trouble here. My food came out hot, yummy and correct. I also got a Hershey's chocolate milkshake which was definitely cold and everything you'd expect from a milkshake. FYI, Cook Out is renowned for their milkshakes and has tons of varieties. First visit at Cook-Out! We were really impressed with their affordability!! We both got "Trays" at $4.79 each. I got a 1/4lb. burger, fries, onion rings and a huge tea. My husband got BBQ chicken, fries, hush puppies (his 1st time having hush puppies) and a huge sweet tea. (Didn't realize BBQ chicken was on a sandwich- thought it would have been just a piece of BBQ chicken.) Many of their menu options are only 99 cents!!! Food was pretty good, fast food char-grilled BBQ. Fries were "ok", onion rings were "ok" hush puppies were pretty good. The only problem lies in that they are ONLY drive-thru at this location. Fries and 'rings don't hold their heat well, so by the time you get home, they are pretty cold. I'm sure if we ate in the parking lot when the food JUST came out, it would have been so much better. It was still good none-the-less. I didn't try one of their "famous" milkshakes but I definitely want to in the future!! So many options!!!! If I were going to grab some fast food, Cook-Out would definitely be my destination of choice. The food is just a cut above some of the other local fast food restaurants. The lines at the drive-thru can be crazy sometimes and you usually have to wait a bit longer in line than say if you were at the golden arches but, as fast food goes its worth it. I generally come here to get a shake (maybe some onion rings as well). I love shakes and they are just so delicious and inexpensive here. It is nice to see them chopping up real fruit and putting it in your shake not just processed flavoring. My tops are probably the banana pudding and banana chocolate. I guess I am a big banana shake fan in general! Overview: Cook-Out is a Christian centered, dual-drive through, non-dine-in, burger, fries, and shake joint on Peter's Creek Pkwy that specializes in simple, greasy food for a great price. If you want to leave happy, order some kind of combo tray that comes with pretty much your choice of burger, and two sides, and a beverage for ~$5 (price current as of Jan, 2015). I'd recommend upgrading to a shake for $1 more. The Establishment: There's no dine-in option, and interestingly, you can fax them an order to be prepared beforehand. The Service: Slower than McDonald's or Burger King, but not as slow as In-N-Out. The Food: I've tried pretty much everything on this menu from the burgers, to the corn-dogs, to the grilled chicken, to a couple of shakes (both fruity and creamy) and have found Cook-Out to be very simplistic greasy food that reminds me of the frozen meals I used to buy in college. Everything is greasy, processed, and simply awful for your body. I attached a picture of my chicken sandwich below to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. The burgers are nice, juicy, and soft, the onion rings are deliciously battered and crunchy, and the corndogs taste like they did back in grade school. Most importantly, the shakes are amazing, and actually taste fruity (when you order a fruity-shake) and are decadently creamy when you get ice-cream based shakes. I'm a fan of the candy-shakes such as Oreo or M&M based shakes. In general, the pricing is pretty great, but I need to warn you that the prices online are far outdated. Furthermore, if you neglect to say "Tray" when ordering your combo order, you may be in for bill-shock as ringing up the items separately results in a significant up-charge (approximately double the price.) Conclusion: Cook-Out is a drive-through only, American fast-food joint that delivers simple, greasy food at great prices. I would not call the quality of the food high, but it's hard to beat its value when ordering a combo tray. My 4-star rating assumes that you ordered a "Tray" and don't mind diabetes. If you care about health, my score would drop to 3-stars, and if you ignored the great value, my review would drop to 2 stars for the food alone. read more

It is pretty inexpensive and you do get a lot of food for your money. Unfortunately, the food is nasty. Cheddar burger? Gross burger with some sort of orange processed cheese sauce that was disgusting. Onion rings? Frozen and honestly the worst I have ever had anywhere. Chicken nuggets as a side item?! Awesome, right? Not if they are inedible! The meal was just a huge greasy load that was just terrible - hell, I would have preferred McDonald's. The milkshakes are pretty great though! I had a caramel cheesecake one that actually tasted like caramel cheesecake. Passing through Winston-Salem and I'm staying with a friend for a couple nights. He took me up to Cook Out and I ended up getting a steak style burger with hush puppies and a banana milkshake. First off, the prices are beyond reasonable..but also NC isn't an expensive place. Second, the food was delicious... I mean, for a fast food joint this place was amazingly delicious! Seemed like a freshly cooked burger and the hush puppies were great. One thing I love about NC is how hush puppies are served with bbq (down in FL they are served mainly with seafood).
